Everyone knows DeviantArt, right? If you’ve been on there recently, you’ll have noticed how many new ai artists have popped up showing off their art. Whether you agree that natural language prompting can be classified as art, you can’t deny that some of the output is quite mesmerising.

I don’t quite understand how people are able to run the equivalent of Midjourney on their local machines to produce adult-themed art, but I can appreciate their work.

One such artist is “vladislovthepoker” who publishes his work at https://www.deviantart.com/vladislovthepoker. I can attest that some of his character artwork is particularly good, and I asked him whether he’d create some Supergirl characters.

AI and Creativity: A New Chapter for Digital Art Communities

Artificial intelligence (AI) is more common in many industries, including the creative arts, as technology advances. The increasing display of AI-generated artwork on websites like DeviantArt has conventional digital artists both excited and concerned. The impact of AI on art platforms and its implications for the artists involved are discussed in this article.

Recently, AI has advanced significantly, and cutting-edge technologies are being developed to produce striking art. These methods have allowed AI-generated works to appear on online art communities like DeviantArt, allowing artists to experiment with new approaches and fashions. AI has improved the efficiency of the creative process while also enabling artists to create extraordinary works that defy our preconceived notions of what is possible.

Even while AI has numerous advantages, some individuals worry about how it can impact conventional digital artists. Some people are concerned that the advent of AI-generated art could result in job losses or reduce the value of human-created art. But it’s crucial to keep in mind that AI is only supposed to support and assist artists, not to replace them.

Digital artists have a whole new range of possibilities for collaboration with these cutting-edge tools when AI and art platforms are combined. AI can help artists generate new concepts, experiment with various aesthetics, and produce more intricate works. Therefore, AI-generated art may really present new opportunities for artists, enabling them to expand the boundaries of their creativity.

Additionally, traditional digital artists may get inspiration from AI-generated art. AI-generated art is distinctive and cutting-edge, which inspires artists to experiment with new methods. In this regard, fusing traditional digital art with AI can result in a more vibrant and varied art environment.

The rise of AI-generated art on platforms like DeviantArt shouldn’t be viewed as a threat to established digital artists, to sum up. Instead, it ushers in a fascinating new era of digital art. The future is promising for both human and AI creators as long as artists continue to use AI as a tool to enhance their creative process. The art world can continue to push limits and produce a broader, more varied range of works by cooperating.

Back at the end of 2022 I started playing around with DALL-E and Stable Diffusion to create images of Supergirl and other superheroines using simple text prompts. The images that the Ai was able to create were impressive but still pretty basic and rough around the edges.

But in the last couple of weeks… man, some talented people out there are creating some CRAZY images. Hyper-realistic photos of superheroines, but particularly Supergirl. Now, my understanding is that they’re not just opening up Stable Diffusion, typing in “Supergirl” and pressing enter. I think there’s some 3d trickery, some Photoshop refinement, and other magic going on under the hood. But man oh man, the results are incredible.

But is it art?

Over on Deviantart, nyctophobia11 published a post outlining how he and Transformerman created a 3d model and then ran it through an “Ai machine” and came up with these out-of-the-world images of this utterly gorgeous Supergirl. Transformerman has a theme going on Deviantart called “But is it art?” where he is publishing his journey in creating some of the images above. You should check out his profile.

It seems like a big leap has occurred in the past couple of months. I don’t know whether Ai technology has gotten better, whether people are creating new tools to complement the Ai technologies, or whether they’re using it in more imaginative ways. Possibly a combination of all three. But it’s exciting because some of the images being created now are stunning, and I can’t wait to see what the artists are going to be creating over the next year.

First look at the Darna 2022 trailer featuring Jane Florence Benitez De Leon as the latest incarnation of Darna, the Filipino superheroine.

From what we can see at the moment, it looks like Darna is a mother, and she is training up her daughter to someday become Darna. The trailer shows the young daughter learning to fight, and there are scenes where she fights a group of boys to help her male friend… and then later where she fights a bunch of grown men.

Where I think it’s going is that Darna (the mother), is killed and then the daughter must take over the role of being Darna.

I just came across this Supergirl proof of content film on YouTube.

This proof of concept video was originally intended to be a fan film, but we decided to expand the idea to a series of fan-created connected stories told inside the DC universe. The first installment will be released in early 2022.

Check out this Kickstarter fan film about Supergirl called – Kara: A Supergirl Fan Film.

Unfortunately, it didn’t get funded. They needed $15,000 and managed to raise $5,000. So unfortunately the money was returned to the backers and the project never went ahead 🙁

Overview

We’re the geekiest group of indie filmmakers you’ll ever meet. While our peers are off making the next Eternal Sunshine, all we can think about is making an epic superhero film. When Kelsey saw that Warner Bros. was developing a feature-length film to bring Supergirl to the big screen, she was dead set on landing an audition for Kara Zor-El. Nathan and Kory, seeing her eagerness to be considered for the part, saw the opportunity to take a crack at some good ol’ fashioned fan fiction, and make a Supergirl short film.

Several pizza meetings later, here we are. Nathan has written a script that brings a fun, fresh, and hopefully satisfying take of Supergirl. With Kelsey bringing her passion for the character, Kory bringing his creative chops to the post production, and the rest of our filmmaking community bringing their various professional talents to the project, we’ve assembled a dream team that lacks only one thing to get the green light… the monies.

The Story

Kara Zor-El, in full form as she balances life and life-saving, must discover her greatest power when she faces a threat that no amount of strength or speed can surmount.

Writer’s Note:

My whole life I’ve heard fellow superhero fans brush characters like Supergirl and Superman aside because they’re too overpowered. In my opinion, this has always made them some of the most interesting heroes. With Kara, it’s rarely been about living to fight another day, and more about making sure everyone else lives to fight another day. Her conflicts require an added level of thought and creativity (unless you just want to toss in kryptonite, which I don’t) to give her a tough problem to solve. Many think characters like Supergirl just require other-worldly threats to give them a real challenge, and many of those storylines are great. However, I’m most intrigued by the threats she can’t just punch her way out of.

The People

Kelsey Pribilski

Kelsey is an actor based out of Austin, TX, playing roles across narrative film, television, and commercials. One of those films was the festival-winning short film “Leecher”, which is where she met her “Kara” co-producers Nathan and Kory. Her goal with this film, outside of having a blast playing the character and producing along side her peers in a creative space, is to land an audition for the feature-length Supergirl film that Warner Bros. is producing.

Kory Hill

Kory graduated with a film degree from UT Austin several years ago, and has been producing and editing both narrative and commercial film here in Texas ever since. His geekdom for all things superhero genre runs deep. He’ll be heading up many of the design and visual elements to the film, including the suit, the SFX, the edit, art materials, etc. He’d also like me to mention he’s an introvert, so the fact he showed up on screen above should prove he’s in it to win it.

Nathan Crenshaw

Nathan also graduated with a film degree from UT Austin several years ago, and has been writing, directing, and producing narrative and commercial film here in Texas, many times alongside Kory. He’s writing and directing the film, as well as co-producing along side Kory and Kelsey. He too, is a superhero nerd.
