I’m going to show you how I usually check out the competition and how to use that information to start getting ranking on the top of the search engines.

I’m assuming you already have a list of keywords to use. I’m only going to use one keyword for demonstration purposes.

The keyword I’m using is “weight loss tips” and the search engine is www.google.co.uk

That keyword gets 14800 searches a month on exact match with the Google keyword tool.

First thing you want to do is type the keyword in to the Google search bar without quotation marks. Now when you get the results you would like to take the top 10 results for the next part.

I’m only showing 3 results for this purpose and they are,

http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/weight_loss/weight_loss_tips.htm

http://chris.pirillo.com/50-weight-loss-tips/

http://www.weightlossgidiet.com/

Now go to the first link and see what that looks like. It’s an article with “top ten weight loss tips”.

What I can see here is the keyword is in the title of the article. (very important to have your main keyword in the title).

The next thing I can see is a lot of internal links to other resources with in the site. (this is also very important to link to other valuable resources with in your site to help your users. Google loves this).

If you have a look at the right side of the page you will see the keyword again linked to a category with the name weight loss. It’s good to categorize your site which helps in boosting your articles and pages.

At the bottom of the page you can see the following words with extra links under it. “More Weight Loss Tips”. If we count correctly you will notice that the keyword appears about 3 times. It’s important to let your keyword appear a few times in the page, but not too much. About 3 to 4 times is fine.

This is all about page structure and the way you layout your keywords. So let go over that again. We have 1 Keyword appearing 3 times on the page. One in the title, one with a link to a category and another one at the bottom of the page.

Next thing is to check what they did with their meta tags. Right click and view source. Here is what I can see.

They have the keyword in three places again. (this is a hint) .

All of this is on page optimization. Just one tip I think you guys should use is to write your articles and pages first. Then do your keyword research, then use your main targeted keyword 3 times within the page / article. This way you will never flood your page with keywords resulting in penalties.

Who links to them, what is the type of traffic they are getting and what keywords are getting them searches.

Go to http://search.yahoo.com/ type in the search bar the following: link:http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/weight_loss/weight_loss_tips.htm -site:weightlossresources.co.uk

This will give you a list of sites linking to that page. Now you are thinking what I should do with this information. Hmmm let me think, ok I have it, ask for links dummy!   Just try to get links from the same sites. Maybe a blog post with a link inside the article is a good choice.

Just keep in mind that relevant links usually count more! For example with in an article mentioning weight loss is a good way to go..

You can also see who links to the main domain of the site by typing the following into yahoo search: linkdomain:weightlossresources.co.uk -site:weightlossresources.co.uk

Most of the time people linking to the site will use your main keyword if not then at least ask for it. Just remember if you’re not getting free links to your site, sometimes the best why to get them is offer money to get a article with your keyword linked on the their site.

Now for my favorite part.

Go to www.compete.com

You can get all sorts of information on the site by typing their domain in at compete.com.

You can see the estimate traffic, who sends the most traffic to the site, what keywords are used in the search engines to get traffic to the site and much more with the paid membership. I found that the information at compete.com is very accurate most of the times, so don’t hesitate in using the information given to you.

Now all that is left for you to do is the keep that content coming and keep building links to your site.

I always say that traffic is better than ranking at the top. So getting traffic from sites that are linking to your competition is a bonus and usually very targeted.

At first when I noticed this new design of Youtube I thought to myself that this could be an April fool’s joke. Instead it turned out to be a real change to the famous video site.

So let’s look at how you can benefit from this change. When you go to a video with a lot of views you will notice on the right hand side just underneath the video you can see views with a dropdown button. When you click on this button you will get a whole lot of new information and statistics.

The first thing that you will see is a traffic graph that shows the traffic volume for the video and you can see the months that it started going viral.

Under that you can see the amount of Comments, Favorites,  Ratings,  Average Rating

The next thing you see is Link data, the data shows where your video is getting traffic from, the amount of views and what type of link it is. For example you can see links where the video was embedded.

Next thing that you can see is Audiences

You can also see from which country you get the most views from.

Now what can you do with this data? Well one thing is that you can try to contact the websites where popular videos are embedded into and ask them if you can get your video on their site. You would need to make sure that your video falls in the same niche otherwise there is no point in asking.

You can comment on related popular videos with a link to your video and you can respond to other videos for traffic.

You should also see what keywords made the video popular, for instance this video was made popular by the keyword Taylor Swift. You can also do the following.

Check the source code for the meta keywords at top of the source code. There you can see what keywords they used for the video.

There is a way to get free traffic to your site via ebooks. Yes you read it correctly via ebooks. There are quite a few ebook directories out there that will help you get traffic all you need to do is submit your free ebook to the directory pointing the link directly to the ebook.

So now you’re thinking, how do I get traffic by pointing a link directly to the ebook? Well the strategy is simple, all you need to do is inside the ebook offer the visitors something to visit your site via a link inside the ebook. Something like a bonus offer and then just point them to an opt-in offer so you will be able to build your list as well.

Now how do you find ebook directories that have a high traffic volume that you can submit your ebooks to? Let me show you how you can find out which sites get a lot of traffic, it’s not a surefire way and not completely accurate but it will give you an indication of what you can expect.

First do a search on google with the keyword “submit ebook” you should get a list of ebook directories that you can submit your ebook to. Now go to the site and copy the URL. the one 1st on my list is www.free-ebooks.net then go to www.compete.com and then paste your URL in the first text field and click on compare. Here you will see the estimate amount of traffic that they are receiving a month. In the month of Feb 2010 they received 119 733 visitors for that month, which is incredible. Just imagine getting 1% of that traffic for your site. That is just an example of the traffic you can get, with hard work comes great rewards.

In this month there were some interesting happenings on the Google search results other wise known as the “serps”. The new Google algorithm was implemented during the month of November 2009 after Google closed down the testing servers for the algorithm so that developers and webmasters could test what they could expect when the update came in to being. They tested the algorithm live in Nov 2009 and will be implementing it to it’s fullest extend in 2010, only a few servers has the algorithm implemented at the moment and not at full power.

The test result changes were instant as if a bee just stung you on the neck and you felt the instant pain which it causes you. The changes were so big you could see some sites that were never in the top ten all of a sudden appeared in the top 3 results. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I also saw a lot of big guys fall right out of the results completely.

What I’ve noticed is guys with fewer links got up to the top and guys with hundreds or even thousands of links pointing to their sites got hit with Google’s big sledge hammer. Not everyone got hit but you might get your turn soon!

My findings are that Google’s new algorithm is finding away to hit spammers and irrelevant linking hard. The Algorithm loves sites with a good amount of relevant content on them, with a structured web navigation system and helpful information towards the users visiting your site.

As Google gets closer and closer to the perfect serps for your search there is no doubt in my mind that you are going to rethink your seo strategies and linking tactics. I have a few suggestions for you and they go like this.

Try to write articles and swap them with relevant sites, but remember to include your link with at least a 3 word keyword.

Change your anchor text and target at least 5 to 8 different keywords around the same niche.

Test before implementing a strategy, the best way to test things is to implement it on a article that you have put on a article site like http://www.articlebase.com

Concentrate on quality content rather then spammy seo content for example write for humans not search engines.

Follow a good website structure.

Make sure that you have 404 error pages in place as well as your 301 redirects.

Look at other ways for traffic like having a competition and posting a press release.

The most important thing to do after all is test, test and test again.
