About OwowCow

OwowCow Creamery crafts small batch ice cream made from local sourced cream, eggs, honey, berries fruits and herbs. All of our flavoring ingredients are natural and organic. Inspired by traditional European gelato artisans we likewise amplify and articulate our matrix of natural flavorings. Unlike traditional gelato our flavors emerge from a richer cream base.

On average we locally source 60-70% of our ingredients. Our plan for the near future is to expand our refrigeration storage capacity. This will enable us to dramatically increase the use, selection and nature of locally grown produce for year round use.

Our main operational difference is our in-house cream base production. This allows us to select fresh local eggs as our emulsifier instead of mono diglycerides; likewise, we us local honey in place of high glucose corn syrup. These artificial ingredients and many others are commonly used in industrial manufacturing of commercial ice cream base.

The Go Local Rally was created due to the overwhelming response to the Locavore ‐ Buy Local A Bucks County Business Community Event. Many people have been contacting us to express their support for this event that promotes independent local companies and buying locally produced foods. Many of these folks do not live in the local Bucks County area and cannot personally attend. A Locavore Kitchen

Much is often made about the European habit of eating healthy and their affinity for good food. We celebrate French bakeries, Italian pastas and sauces, Belgian seafood, and so on. When we think of having a great meal, we presume that means we must go out to a gourmet restaurant specializing in these types of fare. But why are the European menus assumed better than ours?

One of the main staples in the European diet is the habit of shopping at local, independent food markets. Rather than a trip to the supermarket for flash frozen produce that traveled for days in a trailer, the European cook prefers to stop by the local market for a fresh tomato, loaf of bread, or block of cheese. In America, we have a name for this type of shopping choice – LOCAVORE.

This Locavore movement is growing quickly and encourages people to shop for locally grown produce, farm-raised meats, etc. The best part of this movement is that we can all be better cooks in our own homes simply by choosing to by fresher food from a local vendor. Imagine if the next time your family asked for pasta you were able to get out the blender and make the sauce from a tomato picked yesterday, or roasted a chicken raised just around the corner from your home.

While we often talk with our customers about the importance of a quality appliance in preparing your meals, the ingredients we use are just as important. The best part of the Locavore concept is that you do not need a single new recipe. Every step in your cooking is the same, except for the shopping. But the reward of the fresher flavors is well worth the small effort.

ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSETS!

Yes, you’ve run out of excuses. The holidays are over, you are back on track with nutrition and exercise and the nights are still very long. There is not much going on this month. You actually have time to get organized. There is much research and anecdotal evidence that a disorganized environment creates a disorganized, stressed-out mind.

So, let’s look at ways you can do this without too much energy or money.

Step one: Get passed your own resistance. If you are one who is loathe to deal with the mess, there is something behind your procrastinating. Do you find it difficult to let go of things because you spent money on them? Is it difficult to set aside time to deal with disorganization? Do you argue with your spouse over space in the closet/how to store things? Or maybe you don’t have the actual items you need to sort and store your stuff. Take a few moments to look inside and determine what is beneath your resistance. There is a deeper reason we put these types of things forever at the bottom of our to do list.

Step two: Purge. Let’s say we are dealing with the entry way closet. Chances are, there is a bin full of things you don’t use often or at all. The kids may have outgrown the in line skates. Perhaps the container of sidewalk chalk and bubbles can find a new home. Take stock of what you still use and need, and donate the rest. The same goes for your walk in closet. You did so well with your New Years resolutions that you could let go of some of the bigger sized clothing hanging around.

Step three: Get the right tools. Places like The Container Store and Ikea have great systems to help you organize your treasured and useful items. Most people can DIY it or, if you like, hire some help. Full fledged closet systems are a wonderful splurge if you can afford it. But like the old saying goes “A place for everything and everything in it’s place.” Having items sorted by style or use can save you time in addition to creating a peaceful, soothing environment. From putting away laundry to getting ready in the morning, storing like items together where they are easy to see will make life easier and less stressful.

Then you will have time to throw parties, ones at which your guest will inevitably spy on you by looking in closets. And you won’t even be embarrassed.

At Carlisle Wide Plank Floors and Superior Woodcraft we pride ourselves on being “Made in America”. This is a respected characteristic of our businesses and sometimes its one of the reasons people choose to do business with us. Critical Information to Know Before You Buy Reclaimed Wood

The use of Reclaimed wood in homes and businesses is a popular trend. It appeals to environmental enthusiasts and those looking for LEED accreditation or for customers who want more from the architectural elements they are choosing for their project.

100% Reclaimed can offer just that – rich color and character unmatched by other woods today! Every marking tells a story. Old nail holes indicate it was exterior paneling in a barn. Mortis and Tenon holes will tell you that it used to be a carrying beam. Worm holes can remind us of events in history, for example when the American Chestnut tree was wiped out in the early 1900’s by a blight.

As much as we wish to embrace these features there are things to be aware of if you are shopping for a reclaimed wood and you need to ask some pointed questions to educate yourself, make an informed decision and find out what is important to you. Reclaimed woods can cost 25 - 50% more than a non-reclaimed wood; so, make sure you know what you are getting before you buy.

Where does your reclaimed wood come from?

TIP: Buy reclaimed wood that is resawn from beams, unless you are using Barnwood. The character is much better, you get wider widths, longer lengths and far less waste in the overall floor.

What areas of the country do you get your wood from?

TIP: The wood should come from buildings in the area of the country where the best quality wood was utilized 100-150 years ago. FOR EXAMPLE, today Heart Pine grows down South but the BEST Reclaimed Heart Pine comes from the Eastern Seaboard and New England where the best Heart Pine was shipped during the industrial revolution!

What is the widest width you can do? What is going to be my average width?

TIP: Use wide planks. Crafting a reclaimed floor any narrowed than 6” is going to look too busy with all the character that is in the floor.

What is the longest length you can do? What is going to my average length?

TIP: It is important to the overall look of your floor to minimize the number of seams. You can do this by installing a floor made in longer lengths and a longer average length. You should ask for an average length of 6’ long and it will reduce the seams by 50%

Am I limited by where or what subfloor I can install this to?

TIP: Your Reclaimed floor should be able to be installed on radiant heat, concrete, at or below grade, in any room of your home and in any environment – hot, dry or cold. If you are being told you have limitations check the quality of the wood.

Do you kiln dry your wood?

TIP: Kiln drying is a critical process in using a reclaimed wood for floors or paneling. It should be done per order to ensures that the wood has an even and consistent moisture content – important for stability. This also kills any larvae or bugs in the wood. You do not want bugs coming out of your floor when you turn on your heat. If you can get an assurance that your wood is kiln dried and done per order don’t even spend the money.

Do you make each reclaimed floor to order?

TIP: Work with a manufacturer who makes each floor to order this way they are carefully calculating the look, widths and lengths of the boards as an entire floor. This is critical to ensuring the best and most cohesive look, and making sure you get wider and longer boards. If your floor is mass produced it will be a mess.

Is this 100% reclaimed?

TIP: If you really want a reclaimed wood you should only use 100% Reclaimed wood, there are some companies which offer “mixed use” which means that they combine reclaimed and new wood.

How do you grade your wood?

TIP: There is no industry wide standard for grading of Reclaimed wood. So it is up to each manufacturer or supplier to tell you what the floor is going to look like. You should review multiple photographs of real life examples, and request samples to understand how the company will create your floor.

Artisan Kitchens LLC's, Amy Britton, of Osterville, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, is featured included in the Houzz Readers Choice: Top 20 Kitchens of 2011. Even better Artisan is number three on the list. The kitchen that earned Britton this honor has some unique custom made features.

What Surrounds Us

January is typically a time for taking stock. And for good reason. The craziness of the holiday season is behind us, there is a quiet in the air and we have long evenings with a whole lot of time on our hands.

Taking a few hours to look around us and think about what we have chosen to surround ourselves with can be enlightening. Ask yourself these questions:

Are my home furnishings a true reflection of me?

Sometimes we end up with family heirlooms, hand me downs or purchases from long ago that do not relate to who we are at all. You may feel guilty about letting go of the furnishings if they once belonged to a loved one or you spent a lot of money for it. But, if an item is not bringing you pleasure, it is time to say goodbye. Find a good home for these things that once served a purpose in your life, but no longer do.

Do my home furnishings promote health and wellbeing?

We all try to buy with purpose, but sometimes our impulses get the best of us. A super cool, trendy throw that looked good online may be giving you allergy problems now that it’s on your sofa. Or maybe a rug that went with your decor is off gassing dangerous chemicals. Look around your home and try to see with fresh eyes which items are truly supporting your overall health. Whether you need a dust free environment, more natural light, non formaldehyde cushions, you name it..... surround yourself with items that make you feel happy, healthy and improve your daily life.

Is my home a place where loved ones and supportive friends can surround me?

Your home must nurture you in many ways. A house a physical shelter, your home is a place where you gather with those you love. Take some time to make sure that your home is welcoming and can accommodate family and friends. If you need to make more room for entertaining in your home (or your schedule!) now is the time to find a way to do so. Our relationships with others sustain us during hard times and allow us to share our joy during our successes.

60 Bragg Hill is Nearly Complete

After years of hard work 60 Bragg Hill, a sustainable home in Chester County, Pa, is nearly complete. Just a few final touches remain. The visions of architect Matthew Moger and builder Mark Thompson are finally taking their final forms while the homeowners are settling into their new home.

From its humble beginnings Superior Woodcraft's custom cabinetry at 60 Bragg Hill has been installed and begins its life as a beautiful functional kitchen for the family. It's a new dawn for the wood utilized in this kitchen as it provides utility, beauty and harmony while simulatneously sequestering carbon.

It has been a joy to be involved in the building of this special sustainable home. As a woodworker it is great to see wood that was harvested from the building site is being utilized in the new home. It has also been a pleasure to work with everyone involved in building 60 Bragg Hill. The work was truly a cooperative team effort. Just looking at 60 Bragg Hill one can tell that the Bragg Hill team worked together efficiently and effectively. Superior Woodcraft thanks Barney Leonard, Matthew Moger, Mark Thompson and the rest of the 60 Bragg Hill team for a great experience in building an exceptional home.

A collector of Doylestown memorabilia recently contacted me to inform me that Superior Woodcraft’s newly minted wooden nickel isn't the first time wooden nickels were issued in Doylestown, Pa. In 1938 the Doylestown Centennial Committee issued a unique commemorative wooden nickel for the Borough’s celebration of its 100th year of Incorporation.

The Doylestown Centennial wooden nickel could be exchanged in trade at any Doylestown business and was redeemable by bearer at the Doylestown Trust Company or Doylestown National Bank and Trust Company if presented prior to a specified time on June 2, 1938.

Seventy three years later we have another wooden nickel being issued in Doylestown, Pa. Superior Woodcraft wooden nickels are in circulation and can be found at many local businesses. The Superior Woodcraft's wooden nickel is redeemable at Superior Woodcraft in Doylestown. Sometimes good ideas repeat themselves.

Independent We Stand, an organization sponsored by Stihl, Inc, is comprised of independent business owners from across America. The Indie Award was created to allow customers to celebrate and show appreciation for their favorite local businesses and to shed light on the benefits of buying local.

"We've had a lot of fun over the past few days," said Kennedy. Holiday Appliance Tips

Each year at this time, we receive calls with questions about the proper techniques and care for the kitchen appliances in preparation for the Holiday Season. Here are some tips that will help make things just a little less stressful for you.

NEVER use the self-cleaning option of your oven prior to cooking your Holiday meal. The most common cause of control panel failure in an oven is the heat from using the self-cleaning cycle. And, the rules of Nature dictate that if it were to fail, Christmas dinner is the time.For optimal results, make sure the dishwasher has a full container of the rinse aid

If your dishwasher is cloudy or not cleaning properly, chances are you have been using too much soap. The easiest way to remedy the issue is to use the Dishwasher Cleaner and Descaler by Miele. We have used this product with excellent results in many dishwashers and highly recommend it.

When using the Convection option in your oven, the general guideline is that the same recipe will now bake approximately 30% faster and the temperature should be 25 degrees lower. As an example, if you turkey recipe calls for 12 minutes per pound, you should adjust it to approximately 8-9 minutes per pound.

THANKSGIVING - MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. There are no gifts to buy, no expectation of anything except loved ones coming home, only expressions of gratitude and the memory of past traditions being repeated.

But staying grounded and maintaining awareness of that gratitude can be a challenge. House guests disrupt your routine. The return of college age children can bring new challenges. Long buried dysfunctional family patterns can re-emerge; yes, very few families function as perfectly as we see in traditional holiday movies. After all, we are human and not actors and actresses. Finally, we eat in a way that, if sustained, would induce some major health problems. Even with these challenges the holidays are special times.

Here’s what I do to minimize stress and be mindful of the abundance all around me.

• Expectations: Try not to have any preconceived notions of what the weekend will bring. When I allow things to unfold instead of trying to control everything, I can truly enjoy connecting with others. (This is not the same thing as not planning, which I sometimes am guilty of and definitely causes stress.)

• Get enough sleep. It can be tempting to spend every possible moment with family we don’t get to see often by skipping out on sleep. But inadequate rest is a one way ticket to Suckville.

• Eat everything, but in moderation. Give away or freeze some of the leftovers so you’re not eating all those rich foods for the next week.

• Take a moment in the busy-ness to look around at all those you love and feel how much they love you back.

No matter what the state of our lives at any moment, we are truly rich, with the things that really count.

THANKSGIVING COOKING MADE EASY

Each and every year, I make it my mission to bring something to the Thanksgiving table that our family has never experienced before. While we all enjoy our handed-down family recipes, our relatives have come to expect a unique surprise from my oven each year. The added excitement brings a bit of freshness to a holiday rich in tradition.

The secret to my success cannot be attributed to my culinary prowess, or even the Food Network. There are no unique creations flowing from within me. I happily admit that I cheat each and every time.

Step one of my process begins with a visit to the various manufacturer websites from our favorite cooking companies. Companies like Viking, Miele, Dacor, and Wolf/SubZero employ in-house chefs to create recipes that help to showcase their product features. The benefit is that they post these recipes on their websites for the rest of us to steal.

Here are just a few of my family’s favorite offerings from recent years.
