To commemorate mother’s day we are proud to introduce our two new jewelry series: ‘infinity’ & ‘Lunar’. Our introductory pieces in these two collections are the infinity pendant and lunar earrings.

As a happy coincidence, both of our mother’s were born on the same day. We designed the infinity pendant to mark the occasion this year. The idea for the infinity series arose while gazing over English Bay towards the horizon. For us, the horizon extends beyond the bounds of our imagination, as limitless as the night sky.

At night, over these waters, the moon peaks out from behind the city to illuminate the bay. All of the phases on full display replacing the memories of the lunar calendar that hung on Hiroko’s wall when she was little. While the idea of infinity arrives through our imagination of places beyond the horizon, the lunar series unites the present with our reflections on remembered things.

For our mother’s we have added a pearl within the lower loop of the infinity pendant. We provided a scratch finish for one mother, and mirror for the other, reflecting their differing tastes and personalities.

The lunar series earrings, two half spheres of silver, have a rough outer surface like that of the moon, in contrast to their highly reflective crescent and gibbous interiors. When viewed individually each piece will mimic half of the lunar cycle and were made to reflect the silver moonlight.

We hope you will like our newest pieces and will also use them to commemorate your mothers. Happy mother’s day.

I find that I often process my b/w photos with a slightly purple cast. It’s not really a conscious thing, but perhaps because the red channel has the capacity to bring out detail hidden in a plain black and white photo, and the fact that my lo-fi shooting often lacks detail might both be clues as to why this occurs.

Hey everyone! I’m so excited about being a part of the Supermarket family, thanks for having me! Over the next few days, stay tuned for more new products being uploaded to the store.

If you don’t know, here’s a little bit about me:
I’m a self-taught designer who tries to find ways of working across many different media, including designing t-shirts pillows and jewelry, painting, drawing, and photography. Two String Jane was started to bring colorful, crafty and good quality clothing to everyone. When it comes to fashion, I focus on making designs that are wearable, easy to pair with and bold… playfully fun, really, since that’s what I think life’s all about!

A bit about my creative process:
I draw my influences from the everyday simple things and try to translate them into wearable pop art. I start out by sketching a design on paper. Designs are then hand cut into stencils and from there I let the design speak to its own colors. I believe stenciling gives much richer textures and lends itself to more creativity.

The dyeing process:
My original “Splash Dye ” technique creates vibrant splashes of color while staying environmentally friendly and more colorfast than traditional dyeing. It’s a modern interpretation of traditional tie dyeing which allows for more free-form patterns to emerge.

Because all my garments are completely hand stenciled, painted and dyed from scratch with every order I can give them the attention they need. Each of my shirts are slightly different and have the mark of the hand.

We pick and control each inner tube one-by-one before weaving this material. That’s a demanding process, but the result is my ever-favourite product since the very beginning. The intertwining silky straps of rubber framed in a rectangular shape make up a marvellous bag.

Each product we create stems from a need. With the opening of our new workshoppe, we needed a sustainable way to transport our lunches to and fro. Where as paper bags end up in landfills, our waxed canvas Marlowe Lunchbag will stand the test of time.

Along with the Marlowe, two larger carry-all bags were created in her likeness: the Brown Bag Carry All and the Good Health Market Bag. These two totes are ideal as an everyday bag and are larger enough for your journal, laptop, sweater, good book, assorted pens and pencils et cetera or as a market tote with your groceries and fresh cut flowers.

As the days get warmer, my carry-all will certainly be spending many hours in the park toting my favourite picnic blanket and my Marlowe Lunchbag full of snacks.

Ffrash project Jakarta

OOOMS has been invited to co-operate in a project to help former street children in Jakarta, Indonesia.
This eco-project is called Ffrash and is initiated by Gina Provo Kluit, a Dutch woman who is currently living in Jakarta.

The main assignment for OOOMS was to design a collection of interior products, by re-using waste material. Besides that we had to train the former street children and teach them how to make these products. One of the goals was to improve their workshop skills and teach the youngsters the principles of design and entrepeneurship. By doing this they have a better chance to find a job when they leave the shelter.

At our first visit to Jakarta in August 2012, we noticed there is a tremendous amount of trash filling the streets and clogging the city’s sewer system. During these two weeks we’ve visited many interesting and sometimes smelly sites of the city. We also conducted a one day creative workshop at KDM, to get an idea of what to expect in January. To make a long story short; we learned a lot that day! Most of our other time we spend collecting as much information as possible about the different waste materials.

Back at our studio we used all our spare time to work on the project. We executed many experiments involving plastics, glass, metal, microwave ovens, blenders and blowtorches. When we had to leave for Jakarta in January we had a number of concepts and ideas, and a flexible mindset for the unexpected.

Its been a great experience with many challenges and surprises, but already a success on its own. We’ve bought machines, set up the workshop, made prototypes and trained the youngsters. The selected youngsters make a great team and rarely have we seen such enthusiasm and motivation!
