4.05 Monster Movie

As they drive into Pennsylvania, Dean goes on about the weirdness of the case: bite marks, and a witness who saw a vampire. They agree, though, that it’s nice to have a straightforward, black and white case.

The boys, clad in suits, enter a town’s Oktoberfest. Agents Angus and Young talk to the sheriff, who takes them to the morgue to see the victim, Marissa Wright, 26. She has two tooth marks on the side of her neck. Ed Brewer is the only witness, and not –according to the sheriff- exactly reliable.

In a pub, a pretty bartender –Jamie- makes eyes at Dean, as she walks toward the bar. Another server, Lucy, comments on Ed Brewer’s interest in her. The boys ask Jamie about Ed. She points the boys to the table where Ed’s sitting. Ed Brewer tells the boys that, on his way home through the park, he saw a woman struggling, as a man was biting her neck. He describes the vampire just like Dracula from the movies, in dress and in accent. They don’t believe it’s a real vampire. In fact, they begin to think this isn’t really their kind of case.

Sitting in the pub, Dean tells Sam that he needs to right certain “wrongs”. Coming back without any of his old scars, Dean figures that his virginity must be intact, as well.


Dean: I have been re-hymenated.

A young couple, making out in a car, is disturbed by the call of a wolf. The boy dismisses it, but a werewolf breaks the driver-side window and pulls him out of the car, screaming.

Sam and Dean question the girl from the car. She says the creature tore Rick to pieces. She says it was a werewolf, like from the old movies, torn pants and shirt, and everything.

The boys go to the morgue, and examine Rick. His body is torn up, and he’s bitten right down to the bone. The heart is still intact, uncommon for werewolves. The sheriff says the fibers from the body are canine.

Back at the pub, Sam and Dean discuss the cases. Jamie says beers are on her, then tells Dean she gets off work at midnight.

Dean: Do you think this Dracula could turn into a bat. That would be cool.

A museum guard is talking on the phone about a shipment. There is a mysterious sarcophagus that just showed up on the loading dock, with no papers. A mummy rises from the sarcophagus. The guard takes a couple shots, but the mummy kills him.

The boys examine the sarcophagus, and find that it’s from a prop house in Philly. It also has a bowl of dry ice and water.

Dean leaves Sam with the weirdness, and takes off to meet Jamie. She, however, doesn’t wait long for the tardy Dean. As she heads into the misty darkness, Dracula appears behind her. He calls her his bride Mena. Dean arrives just in time, and fights with Dracula. Dracula refers to Dean as “Harker”, and gets the upper hand, but as he’s about to bite, Dean rips off what looks like a prosthetic vampire ear.

Dean takes the ear to Sam, and points out that it is just like a shapeshifter’s flesh.

They decide that the shapeshifter is fixated on Jamie. Jamie tells them about Ed Barker’s crush on her. She says he works as a projectionist at the old movie house.

To Dean, Jamie questions how terrible their lives as hunters must be. Dean tells her about his “near death” experience. It made him realize that he helps people –saves them. He describes it as a gift, a mission.

Lucy walks in on Dean and Jamie making out in the pub. Jamie invites her to stay for a drink. Dean, sarcastically, agrees she should stay for a drink.

Sam checks his pistol, as he enters the old movie house. Someone is playing the organ. As Sam walks in on Ed, he is

Jamie tells Lucy about Dracula. She starts to act a little tipsy. Then, Dean looks down at his glass, and notices he’s feeling a bit woozy. He punches Lucy, knocking “her” face out of whack. He tries to fight Lucy –the shapeshifter- but succumbs to whatever was in his drink.

Dean wakes in a lab, strapped to a table, and wearing Lederhosen, ja! “Oh, come on!” “Dracula” points out his bride from the third movie. He says he chose her form to move about among the living. Then, he found that his bride was incarnate in Jamie.

Dean points out that, in all the movies, the monster always loses in the end. Dracula, however, asserts, “This is my movie. And in my movie, the monster wins. He gets the girl. And the good guy gets electrocuted.” Just as he’s about to pull the switch on Dean, the doorbell rings. Of course, you can’t kill your pretend nemesis, when there’s someone at the door! So, he heads to the door.

Dracula: [to the delivery guy holding a pizza at the front door] Ah, you brought a repast. Continue to be of such service, and your life will be spared.

Sam shows up at the pub, sees the mess, and realizes that Lucy is the villain.

Jamie wakes in Dracula’s “castle”. Waiting for her, he points out the lovely gown he has prepared for her, and the dinner –pizza.

Sam shows up at the house. Jamie has the dress on. Dracula is sorry that he scared Jamie. “You’re the only one I don’t want to scare.” Dracula tells Jamie his story, that his father beat him with a shovel, and called him a monster. He found comfort in the monster movies.

Sam finds Dean, and releases him from the table.

Sam: Hey there, Hansel.
Dean: Shut up!

Sam kicks down the door in, but finds it’s actually a very flimsy movie set door. Dracula throws Sam against a wall. As Dean goes for Sam’s pistol, Dracula throws him across the room. Suddenly, shots fire into the shapeshifter’s chest. “Silver?” He turns to see Jamie standing behind him, pointing the smoking gun.

Sam: [responding to Dean's challenge that he could never guess what movie he would recreate in real life] Porky’s 2.
Dean: [gasping] Lucky guess.

4.04 Metamorphosis

Sam works his mojo on a demon, who taunts Sam and refuses to give up Lilith. Dean is hiding in the shadows, and Ruby looks on –with disturbing approval. Dean walks in on Sam and Ruby. Ruby greets Dean, and he attacks her, pulling her own knife on her. After the fight, Ruby helps the injured and newly exorcised man out of the room. Dean walks off, angry.

Back in their motel room, Dean walks in, and grabs his stuff. Sam, who is already settled into the room, tries to get Dean to talk to him. Dean just punches him –twice. Sam is unable to convince Dean that he’s doing a good thing by saving possessd people. Considering the hundreds they’ve lost over the years, this is good. Even with Ruby’s knife, the human dies. Sam argues that his way merely sends the demon back to Hell. Dean is unimpressed, especially with how far Sam has gone “off the reservation.” He tells Sam that, if he didn’t know him, he’d hunt him. Dean questions his brother, asking, if everything is so great, why did Sam lie. He also asks why an angel told him to stop Sam.

A man is eating ravenously, as his wife asks, “Jack, are you stoned?” She questions his non-stop eating, but he dismisses it. As Jack brushes his teeth, bone cracking noises come from his back, while he reels in understandable pain.

When Dean talks about the Azazel’s demon-blood-baby-food, he is shocked and angry to find out that Sam has known about this for a year. As they argue, Sam receives a call from their dad’s old hunting ally Travis. He tells Sam to look for a man named Jack Montgomery in Carthage, Missouri.

Jack is again crazy for his dinner. Sam and Dean watch from the Impala, as Jack restlessly gives in to his urge for food. He grotesquely raids the fridge, grotesquely enough that Dean is finally convinced that something weird is going on. When Michelle, Jack’s wife, cuts herself, Jack finds himself drawn to the blood. He resists, though, and runs off, leaving her there with a nasty cut.

The boys find Travis in their motel room. They tell Travis about what they saw. It was ask he had feared, so Travis tells them that Jack is a Rugaru. He says he’ll start out human-looking, but he’ll get ugly soon enough. At some point, affected people get a taste for human blood. Once they indulge for the first time, though, they quickly turn into the monster. Travis says it’s genetic. He’d hunted Jack’s father, when he turned –and Jack was a little boy. Hunting down a boy, though, didn’t sit well with him, so he waited until he knew that Jack would be turning.

Jack tries to satisfy his hunger and thirst with alcohol and bar peanuts at a corner pub. Jack interrupts a large man who won’t leave a woman alone. Jack easily catches the man’s punch, and hyperextends his wrist, sending him down in pain. Scared by himself, Jack runs off again.

Travis tells the boys that fire is the only way to kill a Rugaru. Travis and Dean prepare torches, when Sam comes in with new info from the internet. Contrary to Travis’ belief that Rugaru always taste the human blood and turn, Sam has found stories indicating that some people confront their issue, and manage to avoid eating any human flesh. Travis doesn’t believe there’s any way around killing Jack. Sam insists that others have managed to subsist on raw (non-human) flesh and never turned into monsters. So, he believes that they can help Jack.

Jack startles his wife, Michelle, when he finally returns home. She’s angry that he left her to drive herself to the hospital. He is very apologetic. She questions what’s changed since he’s never had such an issue with the sight of blood. As he tries to show her some affection, and his remorse, his advances become too aggressive. After he makes a few aggressive, sexual moves on her, he gets too rough, and she tears herself away from him. He seems just as disturbed by his behavior as she is.

Dean questions Sam about his being able to take Jack out. he asks if he a nice guy, who just happens to have something evil inside him. Sam insists that Dean pull over, and gets angry with Dean for treating him this way. He says this is why he lied to Dean.

The boys find Jack. They tell him that they know what’s happening to him. He thinks he’s sick –or something. Sam tells him about his father’s being a Rugaru. They encourage him to fight it off, and try not to eat human blood. Sam warns Jack that he needs to avoid that first taste, so they won’t have to “stop” him.

Jack listens to his wife’s voice on his phone messages. He sees a woman through a window, and appears to feel a strong urge. Seeing him, the boys get out of the car, grabbing their torches. jack watches the woman undress. When she shuts off the lights, though, he is moved –and disturbed- by the sight of his own scary, dark eyes in the window. When he returns home, more relaxed, he finds his wife tied up. As he walks in toward her, Travis chloroforms him.

Jack wakes to find himself tied up. Jack says he hasn’t hurt anyone. Travis tells him to tell his wife about his “problem”. Michelle begs him to tell her what this is all about. Travis tells her to tell Jack what she said, when he threatened her. “I said, ‘Don’t hurt me, because I’m pregnant.’” Travis says he can’t make the same mistake again. He pulls out a gas can. They beg, as Travis douses the area with gasoline.

Jack fights to get free. As he struggles, the “monster within” grows in strength, and he breaks free from his handcuffs. He struggles with Travis. Michelle watches on, frightened, as Jack takes a bite out of Travis, killing him. Jack unties his wife, but she runs off. As she speeds away in her car, Jack seems to metamorphosize. The boys show up and find the aftermath, including a trail of Travis’ blood, leading to what’s left of his body. Suddenly, Jack attacks Dean. Sam tries to get his torch ready, but Jack gets it away from him. He bludgeons Sam with the torch.

Sam wakes inside a locked closet, and yells to be let free. Jack tells him that Dean’s still alive, but won’t stay that way if Sam doesn’t calm down. He complains that Sam sent his friend here, and he tried to burn his wife alive. He doesn’t tell Sam why Travis was going to kill Michelle, though. Sam tells Jack that it doesn’t matter what he is. It only matters what he does. Jack struggles to resist eating Dean. Dean rises, just as Sam torches Jack.

In the Metallicar, Dean tells Sam that he did the right thing. He apologizes for giving him such a hard time, lately. Sam says the demon blood inside himself is just something he has to deal with. He admits that using his powers is playing with fire. He says he’s done with anything. He says, though, that it’s not for Dean, nor for any angels –it’s “my” choice.

4.03 In the Beginning

As Sam sneaks out of the motel to go to work with Ruby, Dean sleeps restlessly. He wakes from his violent images to find Castiel on the side of the bed. Castiel tells him that he has to stop it, and touches his forehead. Dean finds himself on a bench, in a strange town. His cellphone can’t find a signal. So, he heads into Jaybird’s Diner, across the street.

A stranger next to him in the diner tells Dean he’s in Jaybird’s Diner in Lawrence, KS. The guy jokes that Dean’s cellphone would only work on

Dean: Can you, uh, tell me where I can get reception on this thing?
Stranger: USS Enterprise.
Dean: [to retro-looking server] Thanks. Nice threads. You know Sonny and Cher broke up, right?
Stranger: Sonny and Cher broke up?

Dean looks around and realizes he’s in 1973. The stranger turns out to be John Winchester.

Castiel tells Dean that angels can bend time –time being fluid. He reiterates that Dean has to stop it, then disappears.

We then see John looking to buy a VW Bus. Dean, sitting on the 67 Impala, tells him that’s not the one he wants. John is receptive to Dean’s encouragement to look at the Impala, but says he promised someone that he’d get the van.

John: John Winchester. And thanks.
Dean: Dean Van Halen.

John takes the Impala. Dean follows him, in a yellow Pinto, to where John picks up Mary, and heads to a restaurant. While Dean is watching through the window,

Dean: Sammy, wherever you are, Mom is a babe. I’m going to Hell… again.

Mary excuses herself from John, then sneaks up on Dean, roughs him up, and asks why he’s following them. Dean notices her charm bracelet, covered with crosses and occult charms –protective occult charms. “Are you a hunter?”

After John takes her home, Mary meets Dean and introduces him to her parents, Samuel and Deanna Campbell. Samuel says he doesn’t trust other hunters, but Deanna invites Dean to dinner. To Mary, Dean curiously notes his granparents’ names “Samuel and Deanna?”

Samuel’s working a hunting “job” at the Whitshire farm, where Tom Whitshire got caught in his combine. This is curious because his crops were dead. Samuel and Mary go to investigate. Mary excuses herself to talk to a boy leaning against a tree. Samuel, dressed as a priest, goes to the front door. The door opens to reveal Beth Whitshire and her guest, Dean dressed as a priest.

Charlie, the boy at the tree, tells Mary and Dean that his dad would drink and beat his mother. A stranger came, about a week ago, asked if he wanted the beatings to stop. [Charlie's "beatings to stop" line is confusing in execution.] Next thing he knows, his father’s dead. The stranger said he would be back in ten years, and would want something then. He says he had pale yellow eyes. [Dunh-dunh-duuuuuuuunnnnh!]

Samuel is not convinced when Dean tells him that he knows who the yellow eyed demon is, and that he can kill him with the Colt that Daniel Elkins has in Colorado. Dean pulls out John’s notebook, and looks through his journal of killings from 1973, with plans to track down the demon.

Mary tells Dean that she knows John’s going to propose. She says John is sweet and kind. She is willing to run away from home to be with him and away from hunting. She wants to be safe, and have a family, and hates the idea of raising her children up “into this life”. Dean pleads with Mary not to get out of bed on November 2, 1983, no matter what she hears or sees.

Dean is heading to Colorado, when Castiel shows up in his passenger seat. He tells Dean that he needs to do it alone, without Sam. He also says Sam isn’t looking for him. [Foreshadowing.] He asks Dean if he cares that all the people he saves will die if he alters the future, and his family never becomes hunters. Dean insists that he cares, but this is his family.

Elkins finds Dean stealing the Colt from his safe. Dean convinces Elkins to let him leave with the pistol.

Samuel tells Mary that Dean was going to head the demon off at Liddy Walsh’s house. Concerned, since Liddy is one of her friends, they go to help. Azazel is already at Liddy’s house, promising to save someone, whose cancer had metasthasized. She’s about to make the deal, when Mary and Samuel show up. They fight Azazel, who tells Mary that he likes her for her spunk. Dean shows up with the Colt, and the demon leaves the man’s body, heading into a wall vent.

As Dean and Mary talk outside, Samuel comes out of the house last. Back at the Cambell’s, Dean tells Samuel that he’s Mary’s son. Samuel says he believes Dean, asks how he’s going to find the demon, and if he has the Colt. He asks to see it, but Dean is hesitant. “Samuel” reveals that he’s possessed by Azazel, and telepathically pins Dean and his chair to the back wall. They have words, and Dean says he’s going to kill Azazel. Azazel asks, if he’s Mary’s son, is he one his psychic kids, or does he have a sibling. He tells Dean that he needs them for his plan, and feeds them his own blood. He says he’ll cover his tracks well. Dean tells Azazel that he, himself, kills him in the future. Azazel tells him he can’t save his grandfather, then plunges a knife into his stomach. Azazel hears Deanna in the dining room, catches her, and snaps her neck. He exits, and Dean makes chase.

Azazel –as Samuel- finds John getting ready to propose to Mary in the Impala. He snapps John’s neck, and tells Mary that he’s also killed her parents. He offers to bring John back, and give her the picket fence life she wants. When he mentions the 10-year payment plan, he promises that, as long as he’s not interrupted, no one gets hurt.

Dean catches up to see Mary kissing Azazel –still in Samuel’s body. As Dean draws the Colt on him, the demon black clouds it out, leaving Samuel’s body lying on the ground.

Castiel shows up. Dean awakes in the hotel. He tells Castiel that he didn’t change any of it. Castiel said he couldn’t have stopped it. He sent him back for the truth, so he knows everything that “they” do. He says they know what Azazel did to Sam, but not why. Azazel has covered his tracks, so they don’t know what his end-game is.

Castiel tells Dean where Sam is, and that he’s headed down a dangerous path. He needs to stop it, or “we will.”
