On the 14th November I had a shoot with the awesome Amy O’Farrell. Special thanks to Jenny Ockenden the Make-Up Artist and also to Raymon Suen for assisting with the shoot. Shot was taken place at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Particularly at Miami Beach. I used a Nikon D700 with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8D and 85mm 1.8D. My Nikon D90 is still in the repair shop (Mental note: Don’t ever use Camera Clinic again for repairs, it takes 4 weeks to get them to LOOK at it, and I’ve recently found out they only ship once a week which is just ridiculous). Strangely I found the D700 to have pretty bad ergonomics around the grip. I blame it on Raymond for showing me his Canon 30D, the grip on that body is amazing. Enjoy the photos…

Second, I wasn’t expecting to win the photo5 competition. Wanted to? Yes :Þ. I might sound like a pretty bad loser here, but it had to be said.
With that aside, have you seen the finalists for the Canon Photo5 competition?! I know I am not a lone wolf here, because a lot of people are pretty disappointed with the judges’ decisions. What is their strategy, really? I had so many favourites that I knew was going to be sure winners. Instead we get things like these and these and THESE!

A bit of a conspiracy theory: I counted the number of photos in the finalists section that was taken by “other” branded cameras. And I got a total of eight. THIRTY-NINE other finalists were taken by a Canon camera. In addition to that, all the finalists taken by “other” cameras are all terribly mediocre. Can anyone say “rigged”? I’ll leave that for you to decide, in-fact, leave a comment on what you think about this. To me, it’s a corporation afraid of losing their brand image, so they skew the results in Canon’s favour so they won’t loose face. Of course this is all just my speculations and not of actual fact (But probably is).

I would be terribly embarrassed if I was one of the judges involved in this competition. The level of creativity of the selected finalists are totally lacking and unworthy. However, the good news is, now I know who not to hire if I wanted a photographer. Okay maybe I am being overboard here. I am sure Canon’s bosses had the final say in which images were to be selected (read above).

With that said, there are a few excellent ones that had been selected. So go vote for them!

I really liked these images as well but it didn’t have the same aura of the first photo.

But some people are beyond fanboys, people who put ridiculously stupid tattoos on their body to show how much of a geek they are.

Good luck with this one when the D4 comes out.Heard of the Storm2?Ouch..I hope he got paid my MS for that.

Luckily we’re not all doomed. There are some smarter and artistic people who live amongst us. I would never get a tattoo, but as I understand it, tattoos are supposed to be timeless, epic, pure awesome. Here’s one!

But since I am still out of a camera, I am deeply depressed. I’ve placed my D90 in for repairs, I am still hoping warranty will cover it. Anywho, this is a quick video I did of today’s shoot. In the frame is our friend Kelly and James Ottaway. I am pretty lacking in the video department, so bare with me as I sharpen my video editing skills.
