Google PageRank Update August 2012 surffday

Well there comes just a new update on Google's Page popularity algo on 2nd August 2012. The PageRank toolbar has started showing new ranks for all websites worldwide. The update this time seems a major one and there could be no further expectation of any new changes within the next 24 hours. The last update was on May 3rd and third last was on February 6th. The duration gap has now become constant. Google rolls out these updates quarterly, after every three months. The next update and last update of this year is expected anytime between November 1-10 2012. PageRank as you all know is a numerical weighting scale between 0-10. Websites that are recommended by related niches via backlinks rank higher on PR scale and get the benefit of faster crawl and index rate. Blogs with higher PR are crawled faster compared to those with lower PageRank. For example a PR 7 webpage is crawled several times per minute compared to a PR 5 page that is crawled once every minute. The faster the robot crawls your pages the greater the chances for you to drive organic traffic from Google and build readership.

The PR for MBT remains at 4.0 and same is true for SEM which remains at 2.0. My main focus these last months have been Alexa Rank and I must congratulate all our readers for taking MBT to attain an Alexa Rank of 7K. MBT now counts amongst the very few Google blogs that has AlhamdulillAh crossed the 10K boundary. SEM has amazingly reached 29K within just 6 months and is improving daily.

For those who blog, or write in online journals, keeping track of visitors can be a great way to see who visits a particular blog. There are many ways to keep track of blog readers when you blog. Blog hit counters; visitor tracking, referrers and keywords all can help you know if someone has visited your blog.

When you set up your blog, you will probably have already decided on the type of blog you will keep. Some web blog hosting sites will offer there service for free, but have a minimum of features. Other blog sites might cost, but will offer bloggers services to keep track of visitors. There are many reasons to track the visitors that read your blog. Understanding who visits you blog will help you know what your readers are looking for. Successful blogging starts with interested writing and will appeal to your readers. Another reason you might want to keep track of the visitors that come to your site is to increase traffic. This is especially important for blogs that are for companies. Companies can use their blog for inexpensive advertising. Knowing who visits the blog site will help a company understand if they are reaching their target audience for their services or products.

A blog hit counter is one way to keep track of the amount of visitors that read your blog. About Internal Links vs Outbound Linking

Only to be attacked over and over again by a so called SEO web expert who thinks linking out is bad and shouldn’t even be discussed!
Last time I checked Wikipedia has loads on internal links and quite a lot of outbound links, though for quite sometime now they have rel=nofollow the external ones to help prevent link SPAM. Wasn’t like this all the time though, recall them adding nofollow then removing nofollow only to re add it later! During all this time Wikipedia has done well in Google SERPs so it’s doing something right with it’s SEO.
Many of my web sites have lots of internal links like Free Recipes site which currently only uses internal linking mainly because I have only one site like this, if I had more I’d link them together freely.
Finally got around to updating this site, upgraded to using WordPress as the backend and in the process of adding over 100,000 recipes (up from 11K). Currently at 35,000 recipes and I think WordPress is struggling with the database size so might not get to 100K!
Now that it uses WordPress I was able to very easily automatically internally link around 300 relevant keywords: whenever a keyword is found for the first time on a page within the main content it’s turned into an internal text link using the keyword replaced (use the same concept on this site so most internal links in this post are automated).
Will probably add a couple of hundred more internal linked keywords like this long term because linking (internal and outbound) increases Google rankings a lot due to Google giving the anchor text of links on a page more weight than standard body text (also the links help the page they link to as well).
What this means is if you have a page about Internal Linking you should link from it with the anchor text:

Note related words like Link and Links help with Linking SERPs.
But not only that you also want related phrases for that page to do well, so you might want SERPs like-

And so having the words Google and Outbound as anchor text will help with these related SERPs.

Outbound Links

I don’t like linking out freely to related sites I don’t own since it gives that site a boost as well and I’m not one for helping the competition for free
So I try to link to my own pages with relevant keywords first and link conservatively to other related web sites. For example I have 4 sites that cover SEO to some degree and so makes sense to link those together.
Google AdSense Templates (sells AdSense/SEO themes) which links internally and with several of my other SEO related sites like SEO and Affiliate Marketing which has some free WordPress AdSense/SEO themes(yes it’s reciprocal links and lots of them) and if a link has relevant text (internal/outbound) it will help that pages rankings (and the one it points to).
You can see they both do quite well for searches like “AdSense Themes”

Nofollow and Outbound Links

Note: Google changed how it treats nofollow since I wrote this article (everything else in the article is still true) nofollow now (2010) damages a sites SEO quite badly. When nofollow was first introduced by the major search engines a nofollow links would pass no link benefit/PR and the links benefit that would have passed through the nofollow links was shared between the do-follow links (internal and external). Currently Google DELETES the link benefit of nofollow links, making nofollow one of the worst possible things you can have on a website SEO wise!!

Like I said I don’t like linking to sites I don’t own (selfish that way), but you can still benefit from the anchor text of outbound links without having to use PR on them. If you view source of this page you’ll see all the Google search links are rel=nofollow (not wasting PR/link benefit on a Google search!).
The Google search result below helps show that nofollow links can still help the page they are on due to the anchor text (it’s not ignored by Google).

You’ll note the word ideas is used once on the Wikipedia page that’s number 1 for the above SERP and is part of a nofollow outgoing text link (under the External Links section). Classicism is used once on the page and is used as normal text. Basically there is only one place on the page where you’ll find this exact text.
Google has used the anchor text from a nofollow text link and associated text to rank that page for this highly specific search.
This means IF you added dozens of outbound links to relevant sites, but nofollow them you would at least gain the benefit from the anchor text of the nofollow outbound links with out the PR cost of an outbound link.
This does not prove the text gains the same weight as anchor text of a link without rel=nofollow (haven’t been able to determine a test that shows conclusively either way). For now we can be sure the anchor text of nofollow links is not ignored by Google for ranking purposes and MAY be given the same weight as a normal text link.
Personally I find using nofollow this way steps into the greyhat SEO arena and so something I’d not do excessively (I occasionally nofollow a related link to a competitor for example). The risk of using links this way has got to be very low since sites like Wikipedia do well that way, so would be a bit hypocritical of Google to ban sites for this type of SEO.
You’ve also got 90% of blogs using this technique on comments, most blogging platforms now automatically nofollow all links added to comments. So pretty obvious Google can’t automatically penalise sites for excessive nofollow use.
That said use rel=nofollow on outbound links with care, a Google manual review of a site with hundreds of nofollow links that are clearly added by the site owner may not get by their quality guidelines. It’s one thing having links added by anonymous posters to Wikipedia and blog comments being nofollow by default and a webmaster adding them to their own content for ranking purposes.

In this article I will discuss making money online, Forex trading, and software related to Forex trading. Both good and bad. As well as cover some other things. Though there are a lot of systems out there, more importantly scams, there's not quite as many as there are online get rich quick schemes and ponzi schemes in general. There are still hundreds if not thousands of scams that directly relate to Forex Currency Trading. These scams come in various forms but often get the record set straight on them quickly, however a few others somehow escape the negative publicity and go for years and hit unsuspecting profit seekers where it hurts the most daily. The problem with Forex is that so much seems too good to be true, and a lot of stuff is, but it's also true that many people have made millions and some aren't really all that smart at it. You can profit from the right robot.
The first thing I would like to discuss is the topic of sales pages, that common pitch page that a lot of products use and you often think it's gone too far or it must be a scam just by looking at it. But when you think real hard about it, over half the time this is not actually the case... These sales pages are so long and packed with information since they are commonly advertised on the web and it is more or less business strategy, as opposed to anything reflecting the product. Certain vendors force you to use pitch pages, they need a specific landing page and it makes things much easier for sales transactions.
So rather than guide you through a structured web site with more details through various sections; they often use this pitch page and they generally pack it with information and a ton of hard selling. This has proven to be the trend and it's gotten harder and harder for some EAs to market their software without these types of pitch pages. It is often the case with digital products and or/stuff you can order online. When it comes to these make-money-online and Forex sites they often have a lot of flash to them and obviously many things to draw customers in. In reality it's not much different from any other form of advertising, most certainly not the likes of gambling, and so forth. They need to have some sort of appeal and be competitive. My conclusion is that even if it looks like it could be a scam, do your homework anyway and it may not be. It just depends. Some things are signs, but in my opinion web design and hard selling are not direct signs of a scam. Though in the Forex Market something to hope for would be charts and proof.
With regards to the surveys and other things, it amounts to filling out spam for pennies pretty much, data entry is the same and much more annoying than even the most desperate realize. It also makes you look bad if you tell your friends. You still have to spend time to make any real money, not prizes, and some also require a credit card number on file, and they text you and stuff too. Let's be honest, it sucks. It's bottom of the barrel work that just isn't worth it. It's for the ultra-lazy. The kind of human being who for example might get scammed by a Forex system. Not a serious adult who is looking to profit from investment and extend their savings, along with make more money in general.
I once tried a clicking service just to see if I actually could make money, on the popular moneytec forum it was this highly suggested thing by a bunch of lazy work at home users, but I bought into it at the time, and, no joke I signed up and they told me it would be easy and they would make it easy to visit 1000 sites or whatever they have you visit for 15 cents. So I clicked a link and it just starting loading every 2 seconds, it was awfully slow, I waited 15 minutes and that was only like 25 sites, i got a virus after, and i closed it fast. I abandoned the 15 cents for it and thought instantly that these poor souls who do this are a whole helluva lot more desperate than I am. I do not belong in these sort of slums of the internet. This is the first time I have ever written about it. Besides that several years ago before I started trading Forex I also wrote a few surveys and never got paid once. I have marketed online to some success but mainly my success has been through Forex Trading. That's why I don't need to work a real job and can sit around doing stuff like this all day. Publishing is very important to me. Once something you write online get's indexed by a major search engine like Google, chances are that it will be there for a very long time. I find that important anyway...
There are other ways you can make money online without Forex Trading, though sadly it is often bottom of the barrel work; boring data entry, filling out surveys for pennies, to name a couple of the more common ones. If you're into making web sites you may also advertise on one of your sites or a network of sites, and for that you need fresh content and you need to get traffic, which is way harder than one might think. You can sell products virtually as an affiliate, though you need to find your niche and work very hard at it, it becomes a time consuming job for some people and no matter what you're likely to going to need to invest in something no matter what you do. Whether it's Forex, Web Design, Advertising or whatever it is or a combination of things, most importantly it takes time and ability to adapt your passion. Though you still have much more freedom, affiliate marketing online is very crowded and has been for years. You can also use a revenue-share article and/or video submission service in hopes of being one of the few who can actually earn a living at it. Though that is not for everybody. If you've got four young children and only have an extra hour or two a day to pull in some extra income you most likely don't have time to play a Martha Stewart like figure. Most people don't.
Forex Trading on the other hand is more convenient in the sense that it is an extremely profitable investment opportunity given the right expert adviser, to advise your trade and supply your signals, generally to guide you. That is option one. You need a broker. It's way easier than you think and in the Forex industry not as big of a word as you might think, easy to get and you don't gotta meet them in person or anything. It's an online thing.
There are many options to trade Forex, one of the most common would be the use of automated Forex platforms and Forex robots, all automated Forex trading in general. There is nothing wrong with it. This is where expert advisers come in, EAs for short. These are the Forex experts as I mentioned above who supply your trades and information to you. They pretty much tell you what to do. Some are much better than others. Some are not out to supply signals at all and simply selling their software to make profit from that end. Proper automated Forex software oftens runs on the metatrader 4 Forex trading platform, or at least the more popular ones do. Your EA software is like plug-in software for it. I'd actually be wrong to say all EAs use it, but many of the ones I have experience with use the Metatrader 4 Platform and I prefer it.
The other way to trade Forex is to study the market, find all the relevant information you need, take a very long time of a few months to several years to learn something, only to have it blow up as you were still too inexperienced to do something with your strategy when the market changed. Strategy is a very important element of online Forex trading but not just having a strategy, it's about having enough strategies and being able to adapt properly with the market. This is why a lot of people fail without popular EAs, because the EA is usually a well experienced trader and your common trader can't provide himself with signals even half as good and a lot less consistently. The well known EAs are usually like 15 year traders and so forth who studied the market like a school subject and make extra money on the side by selling there signals too you, or software which grants them.
A lot of Forex EAs today simply don't have that sort strategy or ability to adapt with the market... Thus not making them scams, but just not prepared for the long haul in general. I have a lot of experience with failed systems and systems that worked for just a little while. I have others that work to this day but I am always seeking new ones. I can review several including one I use now however that has already been done a few times over.
If you're looking for the cross between really learning Forex and just really having to learn complicated signals and software I'd suggest Forex Fap Turbo. The downside of this is you often need to buy extra stuff to learn it and some of it is useless. All of this for pretty decent software but it takes way more time and skill and not something I was happy with. I requested and received my refund for the software and some other software related to it, as it was just not for me and the only people i heard reviewing and bragging about it were a lot more educated before they tried it than I was. I wasn't ready then, am not ready now. Though it's a well reviewed Forex system and not a scam, I'd provide a link to a review but there is too many of the same, several are mere Forex advertisements so that's not a lot of help. It also brings up a lot of the Fap Turbo related software that isn't even the direct software and you gotta buy it separately. So it's a lot of hassle even more than some typical investments that aren't related to Forex.
I have also tried automoney and several other Forex robots and automated Forex platforms. I have found that many of these automated Forex systems are a dime a dozen and send you through far too many loops to get the desired results. If they don't eat your entire investment... Some systems don't have stops and you have to do too much manually, others are slow, and sometimes the EA is simply just not your sort of teacher and you get lost sometimes...Some EAs will simply sniff you out and then screw you over in the end. This is why it's important to watch for signs of proof either by service trial or physical proof before making your purchase of expensive Forex software.
I have also used Forex Assassin, the eToro Forex trading platform and Forex Harvester but nothing really significant has come up from any of those systems for me.
Some Forex marketers, EAs and employees in general and so forth are so vicious that they monitor new "Forex" related domain registrations and somehow get your email address and solicit you... So you have to be aware that in the Forex market as far as Forex expert advisers go, there is a lot of them competing to get your money. You are merely seeking the ones who are also looking to have a solid reputation and actually provide you with profitable trades, your EAs #1 objective should be successfully trading Forex and not selling their software. This is another thing that makes the simple "pitch page" easy for EAs with very little maintenance, on that end of things. The software should be and often is a side venture for Forex experts who can actually profit from their knowledge of the market and have the means to market themselves... Can anybody create automated software and sell it? Probably not, I think it's a bit of a stretch but then again it depends if you even get software, or whatever, most systems that are fully developed and have good features but don't work - were more than likely meant to work at some point.
I have read up on quite a few of the most popular Forex review sites like Forex Peace Army and many other well known ones, and to me they all pretty much point towards the same complicated software and their voters are already experts investing 10s of thousands already and they barely feel some of their losses. They switch around a lot; nothing turns out to be solid in the end. The reviews on sites like that most likely got started through advertising. Too many people get to review their own systems on Forex sites like that, etc. You never know who the reviewer is. Searching for automated Forex software reviews is almost impossible nowadays since they all say pretty much the same thing and are mostly positive...
I have read up on many "free Forex signal" reports on the web and I also participate actively on various Forex forums and other Forex related sites. I often find with these particular free Forex signals at least my impression is that you get somebody looking to be a mentor of some sort for you, they are usually shady and turn out to be lacking when you need them the most. These guys are usually empty handed. They are trying to freelance or whatever so that they can supply systems and build a name for themselves, but the problem is that these are the guys who after so many followers do create a commercial system and then ultimately end up failing, their the failed EA newbies to some extent and you want an EA who is an accomplished Forex expert.
One should consider it much better and safer to use an established system that is known to work, and not the work of an aspiring EA, or even worse, somebody who doesn't have those credentials at all and are just trying to stuff their ego. I have not enjoyed the free Forex signals and find it more like looting through them then finding anything really that productive, not much is there or else all Forex signals would have to be free and would be for everybody, all the best Forex signals would be free. At least that is my concept. I don't want a rookie EA telling me what to do, since the trend in the Forex market nowadays is most definitely for more popular and well established EAs to sell systems, mostly automated software. That is one thing I don't understand, who these people are that clog up the forums with nonsense and think they can compete in the market with actual successful Forex EAs who really know how to trade.
How much you want to trade really depends on you. If you're a Forex starter you need to have a good EA for starters, and while I can't hand pick one for you, I can provide at least one review since I have spent time on the subject, in this article off-site to an excellent EA which i have tried and complies with several of my standards. The vacation rental market is a competitive business and getting prospective rental guests to find your listing is tough enough, let alone converting that interest into a reservation. I keep reading reciprocal linking is worthless (from a Google ranking perspective) from so called SEO experts, but they never supply proof. It’s all supposition, not actual scientifically collated evidence.
I don’t do too many reciprocal links (not in the classic sense anyway), but many of my own websites link back and forth (a LOT) and they do great in Google because of it, some of my sites ONLY have reciprocal links from my other sites and my sites see over 20,000 unique visitors a day. If reciprocal linking was some how downgraded I’d see many of my websites traffic decreasing because my sites link back and forth so much (all the links would be worthless). Yet my traffic keeps increasing on sites not using affiliate content (thin affiliate sites die traffic wise no matter how many links).
What I think is happening here is a problem with classic reciprocal linking giving the impression reciprocal linking is worthless.

Reciprocal Linking Example

Other than PR the pages below are all equal with 10 links in total from each page.
Page A (PR4) links to Page B (PR4) which links back: overall gain/loss in PR to either site negligible. Small increase to ranking due to having a link using relevant anchor text (assuming the anchor text is good).
Page A (PR5) links to Page B (PR4) which links back: Page B gains PR/link benefit Page A’s site looses PR/link benefit. Both gain due to anchor text, but Page B also gains a little PR (not much though because it links back) which helps at the expense of Page A.
Page A (PR7) links to Page B (PR2) which links back: Page B gains PR/link benefit Page A’s site looses PR/link benefit. Both gain due to anchor text, but Page B gains a massive amount of PR/link benefit which helps a LOT. Next update Page B might be PR6, however the site Page A is on just lost the equivalent of a PR6 page worth of PR which could decrease current SERPs because that’s like the site just lost a PR6 page!!
How often can you setup a PR7 reciprocal link to a lower PR page of yours though? Not very often, so most reciprocal links result in little benefit passed. This doesn’t mean Google downgrades reciprocal links, it’s the nature of reciprocal linking. You can find sites that have hundreds of reciprocal links with just a PR4 home page because they give away as much link benefit as they gain.
Note: With any linking arrangements that result in an increase in PR it’s going to take over 9 months for the transferred PR to show full benefit (see Google Sandbox Effect) and so you have to keep those links for a year to see significant benefit. By that time the webmaster won’t associate any gains to what they did a year ago..

Compare this to Non Reciprocal Links

Page A (PR4) links to Page B (PR4) which doesn’t link back: Page B gains PR/link benefit Page A’s site looses PR. If Page B gets a fair number of these one way links it’s PR will increase a lot faster than a similar number of reciprocal links.
Page A (PR7) links to Page B (PR4) which doesn’t link back: Page B gains a lot of PR/link benefit Page A’s site looses a lot of PR. Page B only needs one link like this to go to PR5 and probably PR6 next update. Like reciprocal links it won’t help until the links have aged at least 9 months to a year. Because it’s not reciprocal all that gained PR will go to other pages on the site and not be partially sent back to Page A.
In conclusion reciprocal links are not ignored by Google, but by the same token don’t expect miracles from a handful of reciprocal links, chances are you are sending away as much benefit as you gain.

Google Sandbox Effect update

Google Sandbox Effect update at the bottom.
A lot has been written about the so called Google Sandbox Effect in SEO forums over the last year or so, but not much of it is backed up by reality or facts. In 2004 Google had a major algorithm update, this resulted in many new sites loosing recent SERPs and an increase in difficulty in getting a new site ranked.

This was quickly named The Google Sandbox Effect

The original description of the Sandbox Effect is a new site that had gained some good SERPs suddenly lost them all and was sent to oblivion.

The Sandbox initial signs were a new site with some good SERPs suddenly loosing them all for no good reason!

However since the initial drop of new sites in early 2004 at SEO Gold we’ve not seen this effect on any new sites we’ve registered/dealt with since (well over 100 new domains) this has lead us to believe the original description is wrong and we have a theory why. When Google updated it’s algorithm to make ranking in Google much harder some new sites that just started to rank well in the old algorithm got caught in the middle of this update, as you’ll discover it’s not the age of the site per se that’s the problem, it other factors (age and quality of links/PR) that keep a site in the sandbox.

Google Moves the Goal Posts Again, We are in the Sandbox!

Prior to this update a new site could rank quite well in about three months if it was optimised and had a strong link campaign, the links had an effect on Google rankings after just a few months. Anyone with a site registered in 2004 or later knows this is no longer the case, doesn’t matter what you do a new domain (we’ve tried thousand of links to a small number of high quality links) will not rank well in Google until it’s aged. The age of a new domain at first sight seems to be the main sandbox factor, but there is no obvious pattern, some report crawling out of the sandbox after 6 month, others are still stuck in the sand a year or more later.

Is the Google Sandbox Ageist?

This aging before ranking has been mistaken for a filter on newly registered domains, this isn’t the case. We’ve run a series of tests at SEO Gold using a combination of newly registered domains and domains registered up to 5 years ago that have not been marketed at all (PR 0) or not very well (PR below PR 4).
If the age of a domain caused the sandbox effect we’d expect to see all of our test domains that are over a year old to rank much quickly than a newly registered domain. We didn’t see this at all, there were differences but not due to the age alone, but the PR/links to the domain.

Testing the Sandbox Effect

Below you’ll find a few examples from the 20 plus domains we tested.
We bought a domain mid August 2005, it was originally registered October 2002, it was not indexed in Google (was redirected to another site) and so had no links to it. It had been indexed in the past (years ago), but the domain was reported as PageRank 0 home page after the redirect was lifted. Basically this site was equivalent to a newly registered domain in all aspects except it’s original registration date.
We added a large site to this domain and enough links to make a few PR4 pages at the next PR update. As I write this we’ve owned the site for just over two months and it’s traffic is similar to what we see with a newly registered domain (low traffic).
Another site we bought mid August 2005, it was originally registered August 2004, it had a few pages indexed in Google and so had a few links to it (not enough to rank well though). The home page was PR2.
We added a large site to this domain and added enough links to make one PR5 page and a few PR4 pages at the next PR update. As I write this we’ve owned the site for just over two months and it’s traffic is similar to what we see with a newly registered domain (low traffic) though slightly higher than the first site above (not enough to warrant excitement though).
Another site we bought mid August 2005, it was originally registered October 2003, it had a few pages indexed in Google and so had a few links to it (not enough to rank well though). The home page was PR3.
We added a large site to this domain and added enough links to make one PR5 page and a few PR4 pages at the next PR update. As I write this we’ve owned the site for just over two months and it’s traffic is significantly higher to what we see with a newly registered domain. If this was a domain we registered for the first time in August this year we wouldn’t expect to see this traffic for another 4 or more months. We wouldn’t consider this site fully out of the sandbox, but it’s on it’s way.
None of the sites above have any really difficult SERPs, the ones with more traffic have more SERPs than the others.
Another site we bought mid October 2005, it was originally registered September 2003, it had quite a few pages indexed in Google (but they had been deleted recently) and so had links to it, a lot of links to it. The home page was PR5 and we’ve found one PR6 page on the site and many PR5 pages.
We added a large site to this domain and added no links so far. As I write this we’ve owned the site for less than a week it’s traffic is significantly higher to what we see with a newly registered domain. If this was a domain we registered for the first time in August this year we wouldn’t expect to see this traffic for another 6 or more months.
What’s interesting about this last domain is it’s immediately obtained some semi competitive SERPs. You don’t see this with newly registered domain, so this domain is out of the sandbox by a long mark and we expect to make a lot of money from it as the new site is fully indexed etc…

Delayed Link Benefits

It’s still early days on these SEO tests, but results so far strongly suggest having an old domain like the ones mentioned above does not preclude your site from the sandbox. Having a little PR (so links) does seem to help speed the process up a little and having a lot of old links helps a lot. This leads us to the early conclusion what we are seeing is a delay in benefit from links.

Why Doesn’t Google Trust Webmasters Anymore?

There’s a little more to it though than the age of links to a site, we have sites that are well over 1 year old with PR5, PR6 and even PR7 home pages, these have stable links for over a year and their traffic tends to increase over time. We added a new section to one of these sites (PR7 home page) recently and with just one link from the home page (results in a PR6 ‘home page’) thousands of pages were indexed and that section received 6,000 new visitors a day almost immediately! Everything we put on that site does well because it’s got a lot of high quality stable links, that site seems to be trusted by Google and so links to a page are given full benefit immediately. Had we added the same content to a newly registered domain or one of the test domains above we’d be lucky to see 300 visitors a day, even if we added the same links to it (we’ve tried it).
In our experience what we are seeing here is a delay in ranking from links and a kind of trusted status when a domain reaches a certain stage, it’s like a PRX link to a non-trusted site isn’t resulting in a quick benefit like you would have seen a couple of years ago. Now it takes 6 or more months for a new link to transfer significant benefit and longer for full benefit. We’ve speculated this is to thwart the text link sellers, a webmaster purchases a bunch of links and sees their home page PR jump, but three months in no significant traffic increase to warrant the cost. Hold on 6 months and see some benefit from the links and the longer you keep the links better it gets. The problem is how many webmasters are going to hold on those 6+ months with no guarantied ROI!

How To Cope With a Sandboxed Site

So what can a webmaster do about a sandboxed web site? Quite a bit, they can treat the site as though it’s not sandboxed working on link campaigns, optimizing content, adding new content etc… since eventually if you add enough stable links and are patient your site will leave the sandbox. As you’ve seen above with our tests a possible stepping stone over the sandbox is to buy domains with links to them that are already out of the sandbox, this can be expensive though and you need to be very careful not to be conned. during our search for test domains we found plenty of PR5, PR6 and even PR7 domains that didn’t really have that PR, they had been redirected to a high PR page which temporarily gave them high PR!

Google Sandboxed Effect Update

July 2008 and little has changed. Over the past couple of years we’ve registered and dealt with many more domains and we still see the same slow rankings gains we saw when the Google Sandbox was first reported.
Register a new site today and it’s going to take about a year to be in any chance of ranking for any competitive SERPs.
We tried circumventing the Google sandbox by buying old domains with PR that had expired, (you can buy them at auction) at first they did much better than a comparable newly registered domain, but as time passed they tended to drop their initial PR.
Unfortunately Google resets expired domains PR/links so it’s not the way to go to avoid the sandbox. I’m afraid you have to either buy a domain with aged PR/links that has not expired or build up it’s PR/links over time.

Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) Competition

Your websites Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) are determined by various SEO factors, on page content (your body text, the title element etc…), anchor text of links to your web sites pages, the search engines algorithms tweak of the day and of course the number of websites/pages competing for that search phrase.
In this section of the SEO Tutorial we’ll deal with estimating the number of competitors for a SEO SERP.
The first mistake a lot of amateur SEOs (and professional SEOs for that matter) make is looking at total number of pages found for a given SERP and from this limited information concluding the difficulty and number of competitors for that search phrase. This method is inaccurate and should not be relied upon, for example the word HOME is found on a lot of pages (1,780,000,000 pages!!), not because they are targeting SERPs related to the word home, but because they use home as the anchor text of home page links.
Look at the SEO Home SERP, 5,360,000 pages found with a loose search (just type the keywords and search, no speech marks etc… so a loose search) for SEO Home, which would suggest a difficult SERP with quite a lot of competition. But this loose search alone tells us nothing about real competition for the SERP, what we need to know is of those millions of pages how many are targeting or at least mentioning the exact phrase SEO Home, those are your real competition.

Exact and Loose Phrase Match Searches

An exact phrase match search is where you enclose your search phrase within speech marks (“search phrase goes here”) when making a search in Google etc… An exact phrase search removes all loose matches (see below). An exact match would be the red text below-

As you can appreciate an exact phrase match (like text #1 above) to a search engine is considered much more important than finding the words separated, or a loose match (like text #2 above). So two similar pages with the above strings of text and no other mention of the words SEO and Home you would expect to find the page with text number 1 way above the page with text number 2 for the SEO Home SERP.
When you perform the exact phrase match “SEO Home” it gives 13,900 pages. This tells us the vast majority of 5,360,000 pages found for SEO Home (loose search) are not interested in the SEO Home SERP; only 13,900 pages are your true competition since they use the exact text on their page. That is not to say a loose matching page or even a page with the some or all of the words not present at all can’t rank highly since anchor text alone from high PageRank (PR) links or lots of links with the right anchor text (like the Miserable Failure Googlebomb SERP) can beat exact phrase matches.

An Example SERPs Competition Calculation

We’ll use two SERPs that at first glance appear to have similar levels of competition, at least from just looking at the total number pages found in Google with a loose search (the inaccurate measure of competitor pages). Then using exact phrase match searches to show how one is relatively easy and the others is relatively difficult.

Loose Searches

MSN Today : 9,850,000 pages
Psychology Today : 8,700,000 pages
Based on this information alone MSN Today should be the harder SERP by a small margin, more pages using those two words should mean more competition.
As you can appreciate an exact phrase match to a search engine is considered much more important than finding the words separated (loose match). So finding a text match like-
1. “At MSN Today you’ll find a search engine hardly anyone uses”
Will be considered more important for the SERP MSN Today than the loose matching text below-
2. “Earlier Today the search engine MSN crashed due to excessive use from the alt.internet.search-engines newsgroup community!”
Both have the two keywords, but number 1. will be considered more relevant (all other things being equal of course) than number 2. This doesn’t mean number 2 can’t show high for a search for MSN Today, but without supporting anchor text (links using the anchor text MSN Today or derivatives) it is highly unlikely.

Exact Phrase Match Searches

“MSN Today” : 10,600 pages
“Psychology Today” : 1,150,000 pages
The exact phrase “MSN Today” is found on only 10,600 pages out of almost 10,000,000 (just 0.1%).
The exact phrase “Psychology Today” is found on 1,150,000 pages out of almost 9,000,000 (~15%).

For the purpose of determining real SEO competition for a SERP you can all but ignore the loose search matches.

So the real competition for MSN Today is just 10,600 pages (not that many) since the remaining 9.5 million won’t have enough content relevance to compete effectively (unless they have significant links using the right anchor text as well, which is unlikely). So MSN Today is most likely a relatively easy SERP, especially in comparison to a SERP like Psychology Today where there are 1.15 million pages with good content relevance to that SERP (this could be a difficult SERP to obtain).

Other Factors Impacting on SERP Difficulty

As you saw with the MSN Today example above from the millions of pages found with a loose search only 10,600 are using the exact phrase. This information is vital to determining the difficulty of a SERP, but does not always reflect true difficulty since if there are just 10 pages online targeting a SERP and they all do better than your page you don’t get the prized top 10 listing.
For a search phrase to provide traffic to your site you ideally want one of the top 5 listings and no less than top 10 (first page result). Other than very high traffic SERPs after the 10th result traffic practically stops and so you need to look at what actually has the top 10 listings for a given SERP.
Keeping with our MSN Today example the first two pages are-
1. http://www.msn.com/ PR9 with 815,000 backlinks in Google with many using the anchor text MSN.
2. http://join.msn.com/ PR7 with 130 backlinks in Google with many using the anchor text MSN.
Even though there are only 10,600 pages listed for this SERP it would be very difficult to beat these two pages, they have high PR and more importantly a lot of the links will use one of the keywords of this SERP (MSN). To beat these two pages you will need good on site optimization and quite a lot of links (probably enough to make your page PR6) using the anchor text MSN and Today (not necessarily together). You will notice you don’t need as many links as the two pages above since neither of them is optimized well for the phrase MSN Today. They are optimized for MSN though, so the lack of optimization for the Today part makes obtaining the SERP a little easier (but still difficult).
Looking beyond those two pages we have- www.slate.com/ PR7 with 8,310 backlinks which appears to do well thanks to the word today(s) within the content and links using the word MSN as anchor text (http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:www.slate.com/+MSN+Today). This is the type of page that can be relatively easily beat with good on page optimization and relatively small number of links using the exact phrase. So top 3 for this SERP is a real possibility without having to go overboard on the SEO and top 20 should be obtainable with little to no use of anchor text (mentioning the phrase MSN today several times, like this page).
MSN Today SERP Update: July 1st 2005 this page is 6th for the MSN Today SERP. Not bad for no links using that as anchor text or even basic on page optimization. We’ve added a couple of links to the page now with anchor text MSN Today, top 3 is a real possibility.

Quick SEO Tip – If you want to ONLY see the loose matching pages of a SERP use this search format in Google; Search Phrase -”Search Phrase”. This search will only show pages that have both words Search and Phrase but not in the format Search Phrase.

SEO Caveats

A few SEO caveats about SERPs and how some SEO’s manipulate potential clients. You will find on a lot of SEO company websites lists of SERPs the site or their clients sites rank well for in Google and other search engines. Read through these SERPs lists carefully you will almost always find they consist of really easy search phrases, SERPs that you would get with little to no optimization.
One SEO firms web site we visited recently listed phrases like-

SEO consultant
SEO expert
SEO benefits
SEO perspective
SEO robots.txt
SEO software reviews
SEO spam
SEO template
SEO timescale

And stated they have top 20 listings in Google for them all. Sounds good must be pulling in thousands of targeted search engine traffic, but look closer only the 1st two (in bold) are of any real benefit to a SEO firm, the rest will not result in much if any traffic. They are listed to ‘bulk up’ the SERPs (make it look good to a potential client). The reality is the majority of the above SERPs will result in a handful of visits a month, not exactly the SEO benefits the firm wants to portray!
So when you see a list like this go through it and see if this really is a successful site or just flim flam.

Some of these sound fine, but we got them from our August 2005 web logs, specifically looking for phrases that have resulted in less than 5 visits that month. So as we’ve listed 10 SERPs above that comes to less than 50 search engine visitors per month (closer to 20 visitors a month). Not very impressive when you do the maths.

About SEO - PageRank (PR)

PageRank or PR for short seems to be misunderstood by so many that this part of our SEO Tutorial we will try to explain the ins and outs of PageRank without getting too technical. Lets hope so anyway!

What is PageRank?

No better place for a description of PR than Google itself, from Google’s PageRank Explained page-

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”
Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page’s content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it’s a good match for your query.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, seriously though it’s clear from the above PageRank is very important to Google, it’s the foundation of their search engines algorithm and so very important to search engine optimization rankings. PR is created or transferred through links and it’s cumulative, a page with a high PR transfers more PR than a page with low PR making different PR valued links not equal in value from an SEO perspective.

Viewing PageRank

If you haven’t already installed the Google toolbar get yourself over to the Google Toolbar Download page and install a copy ASAP. When you view a page using a browser with the toolbar installed you’ll see a little green bar, hover over it to see the pages PageRank.

What Does a Specific PR Represent?

When you view a pages PR it gives a number between 0 (the lowest) and 10 (the highest), PageRank is based on a log scale, probably around base 6 to 8 (we don’t know for sure, but it doesn’t really matter if we get it wrong since it’s all relative). This means each PR point increase takes 6 to 8 times the effort as the last PR increase, this can be represented as a point system that is very helpful when analysing PR transfer especially for reciprocal link exchanges.

PR1 = 8 points
PR2 = 64 points
PR3 = 512 points
PR4 = 4096 points
PR5 = 32768 points
PR6 = 262144 points
PR7 = 2097152 points
PR8 = 16777216 points
PR9 = 134217728 points
PR10 = 1073741824 points

As you can see the difference between PR1 and PR2 is not the same as the difference between PR2 and PR3. Higher a pages PageRank goes harder it is to go even higher on the Google toolbar display. It might help to imagine each point is the result of a link either directly or indirectly from other pages. Note: this isn’t accurate, but it helps to picture the difference between say a PR4 page and a PR7 page, PR4 pages takes 4096 links, PR7 page 2097152 links, that’s 512 times more links or 512 times the effort if all links were equal!

PageRank Formula

It’s not important that you fully understand the original PageRank formula to use PR to your advantage, but here it is for those who would like the details.
From The Anatomy of a Search Engine authored by the founders of Google Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page we have the the original PageRank formula-

We assume page A has pages T1…Tn which point to it (i.e., are citations). The parameter d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1. We usually set d to 0.85. There are more details about d in the next section. Also C(A) is defined as the number of links going out of page A. The PageRank of a page A is given as follows:
PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))
Note that the PageRanks form a probability distribution over web pages, so the sum of all web pages’ PageRanks will be one.
PageRank or PR(A) can be calculated using a simple iterative algorithm, and corresponds to the principal eigenvector of the normalized link matrix of the web. Also, a PageRank for 26 million web pages can be computed in a few hours on a medium size workstation. There are many other details which are beyond the scope of this paper.

There’s probably been some changes over the years (most likely to iritate those offering SEO Services ), but the guts of the PageRank formula is unlikely to change in the near future, so we can safely use it as a jump off point for PR analysis.

PageRank Simplified

The formula above is cumbersome to work with in the real world since it involves countless iterations of the calculation to reach a PR value and since we don’t know all the variables for a specific page we can’t accurately predict PR for any page using the original PageRank formula!
What we can do though is estimate PR transferred through a link, it’s rough and ready, but useful when setting up reciprocal link exchanges, you can determine roughly if a link exchange results in more benefit to your site or your reciprocal link partners site.
First we simplify the PageRank Formula to only determine PR transferred through a single link by replacing the PR value (PR(A)) with the corresponding value (which we will call PR(pts)) from the PR points table we listed earlier (repeated below). C(A) is from the original formula and represents the number of links from the page in question. For those interested we use 0.85 because it’s generally believed the dampening factor in the original formula (1-d) is 0.85.

PR(pts) * 0.85 / C(A) = PR points transferred through one link

Example PR Calculations

We have a PR5 page with 49 links from it, you want to setup a link exchange with this page which will take the number of links to 50. We look at the PR points table above and see PR5 equates to 32768 PR points, plugging these values into our simplified PR formula-

32768 * 0.85 / 50 = 557 PR points

We compare this figure on the table for the closest match. 557 is closest to 512 PR points or a PR3 (PR3 = 512 points). So a single link from the PR5 page above would likely result in a PR3 page if no other links are involved.
We repeat the PR calculation for your links page. You have a PR5 page with 15 links from it, if you setup this link exchange that’s 16 links, what would your link partner receive?

32768 * 0.85 / 16 = 1740 PR points (approx 3 times the PR points you’ll gain)

We compare this figure on the table for the closest match. 1754 is between 512 PR points (PR3) and 4096 PR points (PR4). So a single link from your PR5 page above would likely result in a stronger PR3 page (possibly a low value PR4 page) than your link partners if no other links are involved.
Easiest way to use this information is to compare the end results directly-

Partner Links Page: 32768 * 0.85 / 50 = 557 PR points
Your Links Page: 32768 * 0.85 / 16 = 1740 PR points

Your partner gains 1197 PR points (17540-557) than you do, this is enough to make two more PR3 pages (2*512=1024 is very close to the the extra points).
You then have to ask yourself is this link exchange in your best interest from a PR point of view. On the face of it no, but you should look at the page/site you are exchanging links with. Is it a popular site, are you likely to receive click thru visitors etc…? Enough PR points to create a couple of PR3 pages isn’t that much of a big deal, the calculation below is where you should think twice about a link exchange.

85% of the PR of a web page is transferred to the web pages it links to, shared equally between all unique links.

Potential link partners PR7 page with 199 links from it (200 after the exchange).
You have a PR6 links page with 9 links from it (10 after the exchange).
Partner PR7 Links Page: 2097152 * 0.85 / 200 = 8913 PR points (two PR4 pages).
Your PR6 Links Page: 262144 * 0.85 / 10 = 22282 PR points (five PR4 pages).
Even though the link partner has a PR7 page the large number of links from it makes it worth far less

Google Duplicate Content Penalty now!

As a SEO consultant who loves to use affiliate based content I have fallen foul of Google’s duplicate content filters way too many times
Few years back I had a really nice set of Amazon affiliate stores that used Amazon’s XML datafeed, prior to Google cracking down on thin affiliates: basically content created using the affiliates content with no added value, AKA duplicate content or thin affiliate content, my very easy to make millions of indexed Amazon affiliate product pages (created from duplicate content) went from pulling in 25,000+ unique visitors a day to a fraction of this traffic (probably about 500 visitors now, little from Google).
Went from making around $50,000 a year just from those Amazon affiliate stores to a hell of a lot less: made just $117 from Amazon last month, $75 the month before taking into account AdSense income from the stores pages I’m probably making less than $1,500 a year from those pages.
The same is true of duplicated articles (article content is no different to product content to Google), so if all you do is copy articles from article directories like every second webmaster trying to make easy money online you are highly unlikely to do well in Google long term.
You can get away with some duplicate content, but use too much on a page and it will not rank well in Google no matter what you do. That’s not to say duplicate content can’t pull any Google traffic, you might still get some real easy SERPs, but in comparison to what you would get if the content was unique it’s a trickle of traffic. Like I said 25K compared to 500 visitors a day and that’s from about a million indexed pages (Google will still index your duplicated content)!
My advice is avoid using a significant amount of duplicated content on any page you consider important. I hate to give precise percentages since every page is different, with a small page you can get away with more duplicate content relatively speaking than a large page: if there’s 500 words and 200 are duplicate that’s not that much duplicate content, in comparison if there’s 3,000 words and 1,000 are duplicate (less of a percentage than the first example) that’s a LOT of duplicate content for a page that size. Like wise 200 duplicated words out of 3,000 words isn’t a lot, that could be considered a quote of another page or something which isn’t going to trip any duplicate content filters in Google.
In general I’ve found you can add duplicate content to a site and it not negatively affect your unique content, but if your for example adding 10 duplicated articles to every 1 unique article, you are pretty much wasting the vast majority of your SEO benefit (from links) on pages that are going to be penalised, basically using duplicate content is a waste of resources.
I have a site I’m not really using right now, home page PR3. Was a waste to have a site with PR and no content, so I added a automated tool for adding articles from a article directory. So will be using duplicate article content only.
Over 1,000 articles have been published with many covering niches that are relatively high traffic. Now at PR3 home page I didn’t expect thousands of visitors a day, but if all this content were unique I could expect to see at least 500 visitors a day and probably 1,000.
Actual traffic is more like 10 visitors a day.
Avoid using duplicate content, I’ve tried all sorts of ways to get past the automated duplicate content penalties, but within a week or two of adding the duplicate content it’s clearly been downgraded in Google SERPs.
