MATAERIAL is the result of the collaborative research between Petr Novikov, Saša Jokić from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Joris Laarman Studio. IAAC tutors representing Open Thesis Fabrication Program provided their advice and professional expertise. During the course of the research we developed a brand new digital fabrication method and a working prototype that can open a door to a number of practical applications. The method that we call Anti·gravity Object Modeling has a Patent-Pending status.

The London Outer Orbital Path — more usually the "London LOOP" — is a 240 km signed walk along public footpaths, and through parks, woods and fields around the edge of Outer London, England.

I walked the LOOP between May and November 2011.

The photographs are shown in chronological order and split into two distinct series: "Along" shows some of the things I saw along the way, while "The Path" is a documentation of the pathways I followed.

Scenarios is an audiovisual installation created by Onionlab for Yota Devices. Bordering on abstraction, Scenarios shows some of the utilities of Yota Devices’ new phone, characterised by its dual screen. The rear screen, made of liquid crystal, can store important information such as a boarding card or map almost permanently. This piece was presented at Barcelona’s 2013 Mobile World Congress at the exhibition stand designed by External Reference.

Women are their own worst beauty critics. Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful.

Great social experiment. Captured beautifully.

The idea for this project came from one of our motion designers, Jonas, as part of his Labs experiment. He wanted to explore a tool that could help him create hyper-lapse videos with the assistance of available data sets and emerging technology. We built the tool – he built a video with it. The results are pretty stunning.

Shot over a period of 18 months, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti's project Toy Stories compiles photos of children from around the world with their prized possesions—their toys. Galimberti explores the universality of being a kid amidst the diversity of the countless corners of the world; saying, “at their age, they are pretty all much the same; they just want to play.”

Great concept and execution.

'The Heart & The Sea' is the third release from independent Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield, the creator of the highly regarded left of centre surf films 'Lines From a Poem' and 'Seaworthy'.
Over three years in the making, 'The Heart & The Sea' explores the joy that lies at the very centre of a surfing life: family, friends & a shared intimacy with the sea. Filmed in Australia, New Zealand, France & Spain, this is a gently refreshing & quietly enchanting contribution to the surf film genre.

Hessian

Hessian is an invader, an ode, a pitch to the market, a brand for sale.

Ben Pierrat developed this brand as an experiment for himself - that doesn't mean it doesn't have value for someone else. Ben hopes that value lies somewhere around the $18,000 mark.

There is a great article on Wired about the project.

His thinking is spot-on when he says:

"The core thought with Hessian.tv is that, as designers, we naturally see solutions to problems/opportunities we can’t help but notice in the market. We have concepts that we know are valid and worthwhile, and not only that but we instinctually know how they should be launched, how they should look, how they should work, and who their target audience should be.

HOWEVER, as anyone who has tried building something knows, the actual production and launch of a great idea is incredibly difficult. Not only that, but, as Svpply taught me, launching, leading, growing and managing a product is an entirely different skill set than most designers have or want to have or should be expected to have.

Inversely, there are oceans of MBAs, Managers and Entrepreneurs out there who are passionate and talented at the actual building and leading of companies, but may not actually be great at identifying worthwhile problem/solutions in the market."

Updates have been slow on Surfstation the past year, mainly because we've been really busy working on our side project – Nubook. We want you guys to have a look at it first hand so we're giving away Nubooks to Surfstation readers. Simply send me an email and I'll send you an invite.
