Hello, lovely people who read my blog! I’m sorry this is late and that I wasn’t able to make it on the podcast one last time, but I wanted to share some final thoughts on Survivor Philippines as a whole and on the finale. A little update on me: I have officially moved to South Africa now where I will be the next two years (and probably won’t be able to watch anymore Survivor). I will be teaching at a fairly new Christian school in a small township outside the city of Middelburg (near Pretoria, for those of you who might be familiar with South Africa). In some ways, it will be my own little survivor adventure, minus the million dollar prize at the end.

Survivor Philippines has definitely made it on my top 10 list of favorite Survivor seasons, maybe even top 5. (I haven’t gone through all the seasons and put together an official list of my favorite ones, so I can’t give you an exact ranking.) It was such a surprising season! From the very beginning, I loved the twist of bringing back three players who had been medically evacuated, and I loved the three that they chose (not that I was a big Russell Swann fan during this season, but he made the show interesting). I think almost everyone would agree that being medically evacuated is the worst way to go. Michael Skupin I was especially excited to see come back because he was a legend!

I couldn’t believe the episode when Dana got medically evacuated. I thought, “No way! Not on this season! Anything but this season!” The game would have been much different if she had made it farther in the game.

The downfall of the Matsing tribe was so tragic to witness, which is probably why I ended up rooting for Malcolm and Denise so much in the end. Denise was the perfect winner with such a wonderful story. She went to every single tribal council and still ended up winning. She didn’t just sail through the game like Kim Spradlin (last season’s winner) did. She actually had to work at it.

The challenges this season were overall pretty awesome. I loved that they finally got to do more water challenges again, and I loved how close some of them were. Many of them kept me on the edge of my seat or surprised me to death when an amazing comeback came out of nowhere.

And don’t get me started on those tribal councils. Can I say best tribal councils ever? My favorite was when Malcolm revealed his hidden immunity idol, Jeff asked if anyone else wanted to come clean about having an idol, and Abi pulled hers out. I loved the episodes when I had no idea who was going home and who was in an alliance with who. The unpredictability of it all made for such an entertaining season.

The finale was wonderful, though I was sad to see how badly Malcolm did at the final immunity challenge. It was also sad to see him and Denise fall apart as an alliance. I understand why they both turned on each other, but when they went through the whole game together like that, it crushed me a bit. I would have been ok with Skupin or Lisa winning because I liked them both, but Denise deserved it the most. If they had just brought Abi with them, one of them could have won!

Speaking of Abi, her excuse she used on the Jeff Probst Show that she was PMSing one day and that’s why she was so b*tchy is just not a good excuse. I’ve heard that one too many times as an excuse from women for why they acted a certain way, and as a woman (and a person who tries to treat everyone with respect regardless of whether or not I think they deserve it) I can tell you that PMS is not a valid excuse! Also, I forgot to tell David this, but my brother recorded this episode of the Jeff Probst Show (the one where he brought the Survivor final five onto the show) so that I could watch it later, and when I did, I totally freaked out because I saw David! Then I rewinded it, played it, and saw him again! I was like, “OMG! Everyone come here! My best Survivor friend is on TV!” It was a wonderful moment, though it literally only lasted a moment (They showed him clapping.) and then I didn’t see him the rest of the episode, but I tell ya, it was pretty darn cool.

Back to Survivor…I didn’t like the bitter jury. That always bugs the crap out of me. Sometimes I wonder what the jury would be like if everyone was kept in isolation from each other, like everyone gets their own individual Ponderosa to go to so that the only time they see the other jury members would be when they meet up to walk into tribal council together. I think that would be terribly lonely and boring for the voted-off contestants (and am not actually suggesting that it should be done), but I also think it might change who some of them end up voting for in the end. I mean, some people can be very persuasive in convincing someone to vote or not vote for a certain contestant. But I guess they are influenced by others regarding who to vote for when they’re in the game, so it’s not a surprise that the same thing would happen once they’re on the jury.

Unfortunately, I don’t have too many other thoughts to share because 1) I didn’t take notes when watching the show, 2) I didn’t get to see the reunion show, and 3) I can’t watch any videos on cbs.com from here in South Africa. It just doesn’t work. I heard that Lisa won the Player of the Season, which I think is awesome. She totally deserves it. She came from being a crying outcast on her tribe to this lady who wanted to make big moves and switch-up the game. I’m sure any Survivor fan who also loved the show The Facts of Life was rooting for her. Poor Malcolm didn’t win Player of the Season, but there’s a rumor that he will be on the next season. I would like to see that. I guess I’ll have to buy the seasons I’ll be missing when I come back to the United States and amazon.com releases them.

Keep listening to David and Jeff’s Survivor Podcast because it’s only getting better and better, and the variety of guests they keep getting on the podcast really add a lot to it. Previously on Survivor, Carter got voted out, and Abi lived to see another day.

In this episode, Lisa thought about getting Denise out because it would increase her chances of winning. Malcolm would already be safe in this upcoming vote with his hidden immunity idol, so that would leave Denise as the biggest threat.

The reward challenge had these big slides that looked super fun! Skupin did really well and ended up winning. Then he chose Malcolm and Lisa to go with him. That left us with an awkward couple back at camp: Denise and Abi. I wouldn’t want the two of them to be alone together for too long.

On the reward, Skupin acted like “a drunk chick at a bar” according to Malcolm. He drank some soda even though it had been 30 years since he last drank any. I didn’t know it could have that kind of effect on someone. Then they went snorkeling with a whale shark and got to pet it and everything. I was so jealous! Then the whale shark head-butted Michael Skupin. After that amazing experience, Malcolm decided to talk strategy with Lisa and Skupin specifically about getting rid of Denise. I was like whoa! I had no idea that he was planning on getting rid of her. I thought there was no way he would turn on her. So now it looked like Malcolm, Lisa, and Skupin would be the final three unless Skupin and Lisa would decide to go with Abi instead. It just goes to show what a brilliant game Malcolm is playing. I think he could probably win it at this point.

The next day, Denise woke up in pain from some kind of bite on her neck. Lisa and Skupin prayed for her while Abi sat there not feeling bad for her. She figured that this would give her an advantage at the immunity challenge, which it really didn’t. The challenge involved using planks to make a rope bridge then building a puzzle and rolling a ball through the puzzle’s maze to the finish. Malcolm fell off the planky rope bridge, sending him back and giving everyone else the opportunity to get ahead of him. Denise flew through the challenge and almost had the puzzle done, then messed it up. So Malcolm all of a sudden put that puzzle together, rolled the ball through it, and won. Denise said in a confessional that she was glad Malcolm had won instead of Abi, and that she would definitely be writing Abi’s name down at tribal council. Would she figure out that she is in danger?

After the challenge, Skupin had an encounter with the fire. It wasn’t major like the last time he played, but it just reminded me once again how accident-prone this guy is. After that, Abi talked to Skupin about getting Denise out. Meanwhile, Denise basically asked Malcolm for the hidden immunity idol, but he said he did not think the situation would call for it. Malcolm’s plan was to get Abi out next and then Denise. Why not Denise now and then Abi? That thought definitely went through Lisa and Skupin’s mind. Lisa thought that they have to stop Malcolm from winning the final immunity challenge, and Denise would be more likely to do that than Abi. So I guess this means that Lisa thinks she can win against Denise but not Malcolm. Now I wonder if she’s right. At this point, it seems to me that Malcolm is more likeable than Denise. Maybe Lisa would have a better chance with Denise by her side in the end. However, she would have an even better chance with Abi by her side.

At tribal council, either Jeff asked basically the same question as last time or Denise just had the same thing to say. I think both. Jeff asked, “Wouldn’t it make sense to take Abi to the end?” And Denise said, “Yes, if that’s the kind of game you want to play.” (Paraphrased quotes.) Denise then said something along the lines of, “Abi basically got to where she is through luck. She didn’t have to sit through all the tribal councils that Malcolm and I did.” Lisa then stuck up for her former tribe by saying that they had a lot of strong people who helped them win the challenges in the beginning. It wasn’t just luck. I liked what she said and how she looked over at the jury while she said it. She was definitely sucking up to all of her former tribe-mates over there.

Then came another stupid-Abi-move. Jeff asked Skupin a question and while he was answering, Abi started saying things like, “You’re an idiot” and “You’re a moron.” Good job, Abi. Insult the person that you are trying to convince to vote with you. That will make him want to keep you around for another few days. *Insert sarcasm font.*

It was soon time to vote, and Denise said, “Abi, if this vote doesn’t go as planned, there is something seriously wrong in the universe.” It would have then been kinda sad and funny at the same time if Denise had been voted out after saying that, but Skupin and Lisa decided to stick with their alliance. Malcolm did not give Denise the idol, but he didn’t need to. For me, it felt so good to see Abi go. However, that would have been the ideal moment for Skupin and Lisa to get Denise out. I guess they figured they could get her out next time, but I personally would have much rather taken Abi with me. I’ve lived with annoying and frustrating people before, and I didn’t even have a million dollars to gain from it. It was just called college, and I learned to suck it up because I knew I wouldn’t be rooming with that person forever. Skupin and Lisa would only have to live with Abi for a few more days, and it could earn one of them a million dollars. Golly, I wish I had gotten a million dollars for putting up with some of my former roommates…Man, I hope they’re not reading this…lol

Anyways, at this point, Malcolm is my pick to win just because I think he is the most likely of the remaining four to win immunity challenges. Once he makes it to the final three (or two if that were to magically happen), he’s bound to win…I think. I keep ending my blogs with such certainty, and then the episodes keep proving me wrong. Regardless, I will still predict away…I think Skupin is the least likely to win. People would choose Lisa over him because she’s made more of a “heart connection” with everyone else. She’s just so sweet, and would probably answer the jury member’s questions to their satisfaction by saying things like, “I felt so bad about voting you out” and “I hope you can forgive me” and “This was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Skupin didn’t necessarily play a bad game, but I think everyone else in the final four played a better game than him. We’ll see, though. I really look forward to the season finale, and whoever wins, I will be happy, because I like all four of the remaining people.

Previously on Survivor Abi won immunity and Penner went home.

Abi had a talk with Carter and asked “How do you feel about this alliance of four going on?” And Carter was all like, “I don’t know. I’m not really thinking about it.” Why would he not be thinking about it? That just makes no sense to me. This just proves to me that Carter’s only strategy is to win challenges and do nothing else. Not the best strategy, Carter. Lisa said in a confessional that Malcolm is playing a brilliant game. The rest of the episode only backed this up. He is playing the game very well. Is this foreshadowing to his eventual win? Who are people more likely to vote for between him and Denise? I’m thinking that Malcolm might be a bit more likeable, but I still think Denise has a good shot too.

Soon it was time for the reward challenge, which would be played with the survivor’s loved ones. It was so touching to see them all come out. It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling in my heart. Episodes with loved ones are always so sweet to watch. Anyways, the challenge itself was fun because it involved the survivors throwing mud balls at their loved ones who would then throw the mud balls at targets that they would knock down. I think they did this challenge because they wanted the loved ones to get a good Survivor experience by getting all gross. Anyways, Malcolm and his brother dominated. After they won, Malcolm chose Lisa to enjoy the reward as well. Then he got to choose one more person, so he picked Skupin. Denise seemed upset, but Malcolm strategically made the right decision. He and Denise are still so tight. Skupin and Lisa are more likely to flip in the alliance, so doing this helped them like Malcolm more.

Back at camp with the three loved ones, Skupin’s son climbed up a coconut tree and hurt himself a bit. Everyone was like “Are you ok?” and Skupin was like “That’s my boy.” I think there might be a family problem here with getting hurt and whatnot. I wonder if the ER doctors in their hometown know them by name.

Later, Skupin mentioned the idea to Lisa and their loved ones that they could team up with Carter to get Malcolm out. Lisa’s brother tried to convince her that this was a good idea. In the game of Survivor, it’s ok to go against her word to get farther in the game. She then sounded really motivated to play the game and play it well, so things could totally change. I was like, “Crap” because I got this sinking feeling that Malcolm won’t win. If this kind of flipping happens, Denise can still hang in there if she wins immunity challenges, which I know she can do. It turned out that I did not need to worry about them, though. Silly Survivor. Getting me all concerned for nothing.

Lisa, Skupin, and their loved ones then said a prayer. Meanwhile, Malcolm was worried about Lisa because her brother is very level-headed and might convince her to really think about who should be in the final three with her. Malcolm, you were so right. He’s a smart cookie. I liked when Lisa said, “I don’t think God chooses sides.” It’s a nice perspective to hear after we’ve seen people like Russell Swan or Coach on the show praying to God that they would win and all that. I’m like Lisa in that I never pray to God that I will win a game or anything like that. Maybe that’s just because I’m not very competitive, but I think God has more important things to worry about. I know He cares about our everyday lives, but I see no reason to pray for victory like some of the other survivors have done in past seasons.

Moving on, the immunity challenge was pretty cool. It involved running across a kind of balance beam thing in the water, untying their bags, swimming back to the beach, tying sticks together, and knocking down a target. Abi took forever to get in the water after getting her bags, so I knew that she wouldn’t win this. Lisa was close to winning at first. Then Carter came close, but Malcolm eventually won. Well, I didn’t need to worry about him anymore. He’s going to make it at least two more episodes because at the tribal council after this, he can/should play his idol. Lisa’s plan was then ruined, but I’ll give her credit for all the strategizing she tried to do. So now I wondered, would she consider getting Denise out, or would she stick with her alliance?

Malcolm felt relaxed after winning immunity. He knew for sure that he will be in the final four, and that’s a pretty good feeling. Man, he’s doing well. Apparently since Malcolm lost the challenge, it would either be Carter or Abi going home. So Denise, for whatever reason, was not part of the considerations. Coming into this episode, I thought for sure that Abi would be the one to go home; however, Skupin and Malcolm thought that Carter should go because he’s a threat in the challenges. For example, he almost won immunity this time. So who would they vote for? Carter finally got a confessional basically saying that they shouldn’t vote him out.

Later, Abi had a fight with everyone and Malcolm made a Harry Potter reference in a confessional. Denise then had a confessional about Abi saying that “It is not a cultural thing; it’s her personality…It’s the culture of Abi.” I agree. To say that Abi’s problem is that she is from a different culture and doesn’t speak English as a first language makes people like that look bad. Malcolm even said, “If Abi goes home tonight, it’s because she’s a bitch.”

At tribal council, Carter said that he deserves to be here more than Abi. We continued to see that Denise and Abi do not get along. Denise even said that she does not think Abi can win if she makes it to the end. Well, the voting eventually happened and Abi had no idol to play. Carter was voted out, making my predictions for this episode wrong. I wasn’t surprised, though. They had to make sure Abi wasn’t going to play her fantasy idol and mess up everything. There was no dramatic ending like in some of the other episodes we’ve had this season. We went into tribal council knowing it would be either Carter or Abi, but I wasn’t on the edge of my seat to find out who it would be. I figured if Abi is voted out, Carter will be next, and if Carter is voted out, Abi would be next. I really can’t think of any reason why they would take Abi any farther after this. I mean, I can think of reasons why I would take her farther (because I could beat her), but knowing who the remaining people are, I just don’t see it happening that Abi would stay. Sure, getting Denise out would be a smart idea for Skupin and Lisa to consider, but I just don’t see it happening. If Denise wins immunity next week, Abi will be gone for sure. What do you think? Will Survivor throw anymore curveballs at us, or are the outcomes of the last few episodes going to be predictable? I guess we’ll see soon.

Here's my blog on the latest episode...

Previously on Survivor: Pete got voted out and Abi got her feelings hurt.

At the beginning of the episode, Denise spoke more about her plan to have strong players in the end: people who deserve to be there. In the meantime, Malcolm—being the nice guy that he is—felt bad for the crying Abi.

The reward “challenge” this episode was one of my favorite kind of rewards. Everyone got $500 to use at the Survivor auction! Abi came in with the plan to save her money for something that will advance her in the game. Right away Denise just spent all her money on pancakes and bacon. Skupin then spent all his money on what appeared to be cheese and wine. I don’t think that’s worth $500, but whatever. Malcolm got some donuts for $200. Penner got fried chicken for only $100 because it was a hidden item, so people didn’t know what it was. Carter bought what turned out to be a baked potato, but he could also choose some rice and beans for the tribe. He made a good decision choosing the rice and beans. Lisa bought a covered item that turned out to be a gigantic sandwich. Then the time came when Jeff brought out an item that would provide an advantage in the game. Right away, Abi bought it for $500. The last item was covered up, and when Carter got it, he found out it was another thing he had to share with the tribe. It was a couple hunks of meat that everyone devoured. My only complaint about this entertaining auction was that none of the covered items that someone bought turned out to be fish eyeballs or something like that.

After the auction, Penner and Abi got frustrated with each other and had a long talk about…well, I don’t really know what they were talking about, but I know I wouldn’t care to be a part of that conversation.

In a confessional, Abi said that people need to communicate with her now that she has an advantage in the game. She read the note and found out that she gets to move to the final round of the immunity challenge which will give her a one in three shot at winning immunity. However, she told Malcolm that she has another immunity idol.

At the challenge, Abi pretended like there were two messages on her note even though there were not. Her sneakiness was pathetic, but I cannot blame her for trying. She wanted everyone to think that she also had a clue to the hidden immunity idol. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do to go farther in the game. In the final round of the immunity challenge, it was Carter, Penner, and Abi. Carter had weights on him, and both he and Penner were a little worn out from the previous rounds. Though everyone doubted her, Abi won! So who would go home now? My guess was Penner. He seemed to be at the bottom of the totem pole because he was not in that tight alliance with Denise, Malcolm, Skupin, and Lisa, and he’s more of a threat than Carter. I mean, sure Carter might be better at challenges than Penner, but Carter does not appear to actually know how to play the game beyond fighting hard at challenges.

Back at camp, Lisa had a hard time thinking about who to vote out. She liked Penner and Carter. She had a “heart connection” with them. She said in a confessional and to others that she does not feel cut out to play this game. Oh, Lisa, you’re just too nice! Stop that. Survivor’s not about being nice. Next, Lisa stupidly told Penner that she was in another alliance and will be voting him out. He was obviously not happy about it. Well, Penner should have made an alliance with her before. So Carter, Penner, and Abi would be voting for Denise. Now they just needed someone to flip. Penner talked to Skupin about that possibility, and it seemed that Skupin took it into consideration. Choosing Denise as the person to vote out was a very good decision, though. I think she is in a wonderful position to win right now, so she is an incredible threat. Now, will Skupin recognize this and turn on his alliance, or will he stick with them?

At tribal council, Penner revealed the Malcolm, Denise, Skupin, and Lisa alliance. He also said that he didn’t trust Lisa because she’s written his name down twice. Jeff then asked Lisa some questions to try to get her to reveal her secret about being a TV star when she was younger, but she wouldn’t break down. Good for her. I loved it when Penner shouted Denise’s name while he was voting, so everyone knew who he was voting for. I don’t think that’s happened before. Silly Penner. Unfortunately, Penner did get voted out. I say “unfortunately” because he is so darn entertaining…well, especially when he’s getting voted out. I laughed so hard. So he hugged Carter; then Abi stood up for a hug and asked if she would get one, but Penner said he wouldn’t give out anymore hugs. Why on earth did Abi think she deserved a hug from him? They haven’t been on good terms. So Penner’s torch was snuffed and then he whistled as he walked away. Whistled. Penner, Penner, Penner. *shakes head* Jeff just kind of shrugged his shoulders at everyone, causing me to laugh even more. It’s always fun when people do unique things right after they get voted out, like give Jeff a hug or whistle lol. Fun stuff.

Good episode, even though it wasn’t an edge-of-the-seat tribal council. I mean, I expected Penner to go home, which he did, but the episode entertained me nonetheless. The only thing I want to know is how Carter is feeling. I mean, has he always known that he was at the bottom of the alliance that was against Pete and Abi? When he was thinking ahead in the game to the point where they would have to start getting each other out, did he think that he was safe? Perhaps it wasn’t until this episode that he realized he was a little lower on the totem pole than he thought. Honestly, I just have no idea what to think about Carter because they aren’t showing us any of his confessionals! Carter, dude, what’s going on in your mind? I want to know! Anyways, Abi will probably be next to go unless she can somehow win immunity again. Not likely. Carter winning, though, that’s more likely. In fact, I think Carter’s only chance right now is to start winning immunities like crazy. Otherwise, he’ll be out soon. This leads me to wondering what the alliance of four would do if they got Abi out in the next episode and then Carter won immunity after that. Malcolm and Denise have given me no reason to believe that they will ever turn on each other, so the question is, will Skupin turn on Lisa? Will Lisa turn on Skupin? Or will they band together with Carter and vote out Malcolm or Denise? I can actually see that happening. I mean, even though Lisa gave Malcolm and Denise her word that she would vote with them, I know that she has more of a “heart connection” with Skupin and Carter. Wouldn’t that be an interesting final three? Skupin, Carter, and Lisa. Oh, this show amuses me so. See you next week!

Previously on Survivor: Skupin flipped, causing Artis to be voted out. Lisa remained true to Abi and Pete.

Pete and Abi seemed to be in a lot of danger now because Lisa now realized that she cannot continue with them. Lisa had trouble talking to Abi about it, though, because she is bad at breakups. Lisa’s just too sweet. That’s her problem.

The reward challenge must have been tiring. They were split onto two teams, then one person from each team went against someone from the other team. They had to run and flip over all three of their giant tiles before the other person got all theirs flipped over. Abi didn’t seem to understand the rules and flipped over a tile for the other team. In the end, her team ended up winning, though, when Skupin made the same mistake. I guess when all that adrenaline is going, it’s easy to mess up. The reward was a spa day including yummy food, a bath, and a massage. The winners agreed to not talk strategy but just to enjoy the reward.

After the reward, however, Abi went on and on about how wonderful it was despite the fact that no one was asking her about it; she just told them anyway. I am just amazed that she is so bad at picking up on the nonverbal clues that no one gives a crap. I mean, when I’m talking and I notice people rolling their eyes, not responding to me, not asking follow-up questions, and not looking at me, I normally stop talking or say, “Is something wrong?” But I guess some people just don’t pay attention to those non-verbal things like I do. In fact, Abi then made matters worse by announcing that she was not going to cook anymore. Some people were then confused, thinking that she wasn’t going to eat anymore. Abi then responded, “I don’t wanna cook, but I definitely wanna eat; I don’t wanna starve to death.” Goodness gracious. Denise could not wait to vote Abi out and say, “Whiners are wieners” while she does it. Abi’s dug herself into quite the hole, and it does not help when she does things like remind everyone that she is on a cooking strike the next day, as if they might have forgotten.

In other news, Malcolm spoke with Skupin about both of them making up the final four with Lisa and Denise. When Skupin discussed this with Lisa, she told him that she trusts Penner more and would rather have a tight alliance with him. However, when Lisa and Skupin approached him on the topic, he said that he didn’t want to think that far ahead and make that kind of commitment. Lisa confessed that Penner lost an opportunity. Soon after, Skupin and Lisa officially made their alliance with Malcolm and Denise. Penner, that was probably a bad move on your part.

I liked the immunity challenge this episode because it was unique. They had to navigate a buoy through some ropes. Skupin, Carter, and Denise made it to the final round which involved swimming. Carter eventually won immunity because Skupin got all tied up with a knot.

The majority alliance decided to split the votes: three for Abi and three for Pete. If Abi would play the idol, Pete would be out. If she didn’t, they would revote and get Abi out. Pete and Abi both did as much scrambling as they could, talking to everyone except Denise and Malcolm and trying to get them to flip.

At tribal council, Malcolm said that knew he was in danger: that people were talking about getting him out. Abi said that she had regrets about last tribal council. She also said that part of her problem is that English is not her first language. She could not believe that she was so disliked by everyone on the tribe. “I’m very loved back home,” she said. Lisa said that she forgave Abi, but she did not feel like she could be with someone who does not trust her. Jeff seemed to go a little hard on Abi during tribal council, but I think it was good that he did that. Abi needed to realize how her tribe really felt about her. Jeff even tried to make up for it by suggesting that Abi would be a great person to take along to the end if no one seemed to like her. It would be an easy win. “Easy win if that’s the kind of game you want to play,” Denise replied. Apparently Denise’s strategy is to take strong people to the end: worthy competitors, so to speak. It reminds me of Survivor Guatemala. I recently saw the last episode of that season when I was looking through an old video tape that my family had recorded various shows on. Stephanie on that season said something about wanting to go to the end with a strong person. So when Denise said that, it made me think of Stephanie, not that they are entirely comparable people, but they have their similarities for sure.

Sometimes I forget that there are people who play the game that way. Rather than “taking the easy way out” by bringing the unlikable people and the tools who don’t do anything, they bring people to the end who truly deserve to be there because they like the idea of going up against someone like that. As much as I find that to be a noble strategy, if I were to ever play the game, my strategy would probably be to bring the unlikables with me. I would want my chances of winning to be as high as possible.

Getting back to tribal council, after Denise let it slip that Abi was unlikeable, Abi said, “Wow, I never thought I was unlikeable.” Then she started getting defensive and emotional towards Denise. Denise tried to explain what Abi did wrong, but Abi did not let her finish her sentences. Abi, when you do that, it makes you unlikeable! After the vote, Abi played her idol, which was not a surprise; she needed to. So Pete went home, and Abi was all by herself now.

Abi needed to hear all that. The question now is whether or not she will ponder what was said to her and learn from it. She became defensive at tribal council, but maybe she will start to take this to heart. She has to come to terms with reality and realize that she might have some changes to make in her life. Maybe watching the episode now she will realize what everyone was trying to say.

Pete was a good player. I was glad to see him go, yet also surprisingly a little sad, too, though I can’t really say why. I’m still rooting for Denise and Malcolm right now, and right now it looks like they have a pretty good shot! We’ll see what happens next week.

Nicole's Survivor Blog - Philippines Episode 9

So, I wasn’t the only one that was confused at the end of last week’s episode. After one of the wildest tribal councils ever, the survivors returned to camp trying to figure out what happened. Abi wanted to know who voted for her. Penner admitted it was him because he was pissed at her. He then had a talk with Carter because he did not understand who voted for whom and what was going on. Carter, you should have told Penner what was going on before tribal council, ya know?

Anyways, Lisa and Penner had a very nice and interesting talk with each other one day. Penner really got Lisa thinking about who she is as a person and how her acting career when she was young influenced who she is today. Judging by the way that all the commercials for this episode were focused on Lisa and that the recap was focused on her and now this long scene was focused on her it got me wondering, “Is Lisa going home tonight?”

Moving on to the reward challenge, as soon as Jeff announced what the reward would be, I shouted, “I want to win this reward challenge!” For real, those cultural moments are my favorite. And kids. They’re my favorite too. So adding little kids, school supplies, and a different culture all in one reward got me so excited beyond belief. (And just think, in a little over a month, I will be experiencing that too! Yeah, because I’m going to South Africa to be a teacher there. Yay me!) The teams were picked for the reward challenge, and poor Abi did not make it onto a team, so she had no shot at winning the reward. Malcolm, Penner, Denise, and Carter were on the team that won. The alliances were definitely together in this reward challenge.

After winning, they took the supplies and went to see the children. The kids ran up to them all excited. My favorite moment of the episode came next…
Penner: “In America, my name is normal.”
All the kids: “Normal.”

After that, Normal played a kind of piñata type game that the kids were very excited about. Meanwhile, Malcolm reconsidered what he is doing in his life; this reminded him that he likes working with kids. Of course, they also got a nice little feast before the end of their reward.

At camp, Artis complained about Abi in a confessional saying that she thinks she knows so much about this game. Abi was then very rude towards Lisa, calling her gullible and naïve. Poor Lisa.

At the immunity challenge, Jeff wore a black shirt!! The challenge itself looked very hard with the way they had to balance the balls. Skupin was really good at it, though. I guess it just takes a while to get the hang of it. Pete did really well too until he messed up and lost many of his balls, giving Skupin the chance to win. Good for him. At this point, it looked like Penner/Normal would be the one to go home, though I still wondered if it might be Lisa, since this was basically the Lisa Episode.

Back at camp, Abi confessed that she finds Skupin to be annoying, and she wanted to get him out if he hadn’t won. Also, she apparently found a clam. Good for her. *Insert sarcasm font.*

Lisa was now in a pickle. She wanted to stay true to her alliance, but Penner tried to convince her to flip. Lisa wondered if Tandang is no longer being loyal to her, why should she be loyal to them? Then Penner and Malcolm tried to convince Skupin to flip, as well.

At tribal council, Abi said that she thought she showed grace to Lisa after the last tribal council. Say what? Which part was the grace: when you called her gullible or when you called her naïve? However, Abi did admit that she does not trust Lisa. When it got to the actual voting, Pete said something that I liked after he wrote down Penner’s name; it was along the lines of, “I’m not voting for you because you’re a returning player. It’s because you really know how to play this game.” That is so true. Penner does know how to play this game. In the end, Artis got voted out! Yay! I was really glad to see that strong alliance get broken up, though I still do not understand why they voted Artis out rather than Pete. Pete seems to be more of a threat both physically and strategically. When that happened, Abi gave a death stare, which I thought was aimed towards Lisa, because at that point I was like, “Ok, Lisa flipped. That makes sense.” I loved RC’s surprised and happy reaction from the jury section. When I found out that Lisa remained loyal and Skupin was the one who switched, I was shocked. I did not think that Lisa wanted to be in that alliance anymore. Also, I thought Lisa and Skupin would be in this together: that whoever they voted for would be the same person. Apparently not. Apparently their bond was not as tight as I had been led to believe.

Perhaps this is the part where I am supposed to guess who will be voted out next, but I really don’t have a clue. I mean, after last week’s episode, I never would have guessed that Artis would be the one to go home. I think there is a possibility that Lisa will go next. She is so sweet and likeable that she is obviously a threat. If not, I’m thinking Pete could be next; he’s a really big threat, and they need to take him out as soon as possible. Who knows, though? We’ll just have to wait another week to see.

Last time on Survivor, Penner would have been voted out if he hadn’t played his hidden immunity idol. So RC went home instead. Penner knew that he was in trouble and would have to win the next immunity challenge if he wanted to stay in the game.

The reward challenge was exciting this episode. The survivors were split into two groups. After seeing the groups, I turned to my little brother and said, “I bet you a Reese’s peanut butter cup that the team with Abi on it loses.” He did not take the bet, so I got to keep my peanut butter cup. Her team did end up losing, though it was very close. Artis was also on that losing team. They went back to the beach in defeat and, for the first time ever, he did not have an angry confessional after losing a challenge. He seemed quite ok with it and willing to eat his beans. Also back on the beach, Pete tried to strategize with Abi, and she became angry with him for no reason at all. Now Pete knows how RC felt. HA!

The people on the reward discussed the possibility of sending Abi, Pete, and Artis home next. Penner, of course, was all game for that plan. I personally would have loved to see that happen. Lisa, though, was trying to think how she can go as far as possible. She thought it made sense for her to go to the end with Skupin, Abi, Pete, and Artis. In a way, I can understand her thinking. Malcolm and Denise are super strong and likeable. You might not want to go to the end with people like that. Honestly, if I was on the jury, and it was Lisa with either Skupin, Abi, Pete, or Artis, there would be a strong possibility that I would vote for Lisa to win. My only concern is how Lisa would make it to the final three with that alliance. Abi, Pete, and Artis (I guess) seem so close, and it makes sense from a Pete standpoint to take Abi and Artis to the final three with him because, honestly, who would vote for Abi or Artis? That seems like a guaranteed win for Pete, in my opinion. I mean, I would vote for him in that scenario.

Back on the beach, Lisa told Skupin that Malcolm has the hidden immunity idol. Skupin then realized that Lisa is really playing this game. Random thought: At this point, I had not noticed Carter at all this episode, but that’s nothing new.

The immunity challenge was exciting as well. After untying a bunch of knots, the first three survivors to cross the finish line with their puzzle pieces would move onto the next round. Pete was first across, then Jeff Kent, then Penner (barely). Then the three of them had to put a puzzle together. Jeff Kent was in the lead, then out of nowhere, Penner caught up and won! Holy cow! This was his first time winning individual immunity. Good for him. At this point, I could not wait to see what would happen next.

Back at camp, Lisa told Pete that Malcolm has the idol. Lisa wanted to get Malcolm out. Pete talked to Malcolm who told him that he doesn’t have the idol. After ruining Lisa’s brilliant plan, Pete and some others decided that they wanted to get Jeff out. But then Jeff and Malcolm talked to each other about getting Pete out! Everything was happening so quickly that it was hard for me to keep it all straight. I tried to figure out who was in an alliance with whom. I thought Malcolm and Pete had had some kind of alliance going on, so was Malcolm really going to vote for Pete now? Who was with whom, and who would get voted out? One thing that made me laugh was when Jeff said to Carter, “We’re voting out Pete” and Carter responded with, “I thought they were voting you out tonight.” Oh Carter. The things you say.

So they went to tribal council, and it turned out to be one of my favorite ones ever. Lisa told the whole tribe that Malcolm has the hidden immunity idol. So now that Lisa threw Malcolm under the bus, he decided to admit it. He even pulled it out to show everyone and assured them that he would be playing it, so it would be stupid of them to vote for him. Jeff Probst then asked if anyone else wanted to admit they have the idol. I took this to be kind of a joke, but apparently Abi didn’t. “Yeah, I have it,” she said in her thick accent while pulling it out of her bag. This was the moment when I stood up on my sofa, pointed at the tv screen, and shouted, “What the f***!”

Anyways, Pete knows that he is in danger. Now Lisa and Abi are on the chopping block too. In fact, the only people that did not seem to be on the chopping block were Artis, Carter, and Denise (and Penner for this vote, since he had immunity). While the voting occurred, I still was too confused by everything that happened at tribal council to do the math (counting…yes, counting is math, and I couldn’t do it at that moment) to figure out who was going home. All I could say was “Don’t play your idol, Malcolm! Don’t do it!” And he didn’t. Abi didn’t either; I didn’t expect her to, though. But then she got a vote, and I was like, “Who voted for Abi?!? What the crap?!” Pete almost got voted out, but Jeff had one more vote against him. Poor Jeff Kent. Malcolm seemed shocked and confused by that result. I guess he thought Pete was going home, but why would he think that? Even if Penner had voted with them, it would have been a tie. So Denise, Malcolm, Jeff, and Carter were the ones who voted for Pete. Lisa, Skupin, Pete, Abi, and Artis voted for Jeff. And good ole’ Penner voted for Abi. I don’t quite know why, but he did. Did neither of the alliances decide to tell him what they were doing and get him on board? Did he not care at this point? Did he think that other people would vote for Abi now that she had revealed that she had the idol? Maybe he wanted to avoid there being a tie? Or he wanted to avoid picking a side, therefore keeping his options open? Well, whatever the reasons, tribal council (and the episode) came to a confusing close.

Next time on Survivor, Lisa’s alliance bullies her, which isn’t a surprise; I mean, Abi’s in that alliance. Then Lisa considers swapping which might not be the best choice for her, but who knows?

At this point, I definitely think Denise is in a good position to win. Penner has a target on his back because he’s a returning player and does not appear to be in an alliance at all right now. Skupin has a target on his back because he’s a returning player and not super tight in an alliance with anyone. Lisa has a target on her back because she is obviously playing the game now, and she revealed Malcolm’s secret which will make him want to get rid of her. Malcolm has a target on his back because he’s strong and he has an idol. Pete has a target on his back, which is obvious because four people tried to vote him out. Abi has a target on her back because she has the idol. That leaves Artis, Carter, and Denise. Now, if those three somehow made the final three, (which I have no idea how on earth that would happen, but if they did) Denise would obviously win. Who would vote for Artis and Carter? For real. So go Denise!

Anyways, what a freakin’ wonderful episode! I can’t get over how awesome it was, and I can’t wait for the next one!

Well, may I just say that I loved this past episode of Survivor. (Yes, I am aware that grammatically speaking, that sentence should end in a question mark, but I wanted you to read it as a statement, not a question.) It was very entertaining and full out strategy, blindsides, and Nicoles on the edge of their seats.

Let’s start from the beginning…Katie went home in the last episode of Survivor, and when the tribe got back to camp, Penner expressed his surprise at receiving a vote, but apparently it was just crazy Katie voting for him with no one else ever intending to vote that way. *Insert sarcasm font.* Jonathan said in a confessional that he and Jeff trust each other as if he had no idea that Jeff almost voted him out.

A boat showed up the next day, and each tribe received mail stating that they have 10 minutes to gather everything they need because they are merging and going to a new home. Malcolm had to quickly dig up his idol which he had hidden when he first arrived on that beach. When they all reached their new island, there was the traditional feast. After that, they got to work on their shelter. While the guys built the shelter, Lisa decided to hang up everyone’s clothes to dry. While she was doing that, she accidently discovered Malcolm’s hidden immunity idol. This meant that Malcolm had to level with Lisa after having a talk with Denise about what just happened. If it had been anyone else, I think he or she would have told others about this discovery. However, dear sweet Lisa, promised not to tell anyone.

As Malcolm put it, “The church lady found it, who hopefully has a heart.” Then Malcolm did what probably anyone in his situation would do: he told Lisa what was going on and made an alliance with her. Lisa’s not dumb, though. She knew that Malcolm would not have aligned with her if she hadn’t found his idol. In a confessional she said, “I’m not the only actor on this island.” Ain’t that the truth. (Again, I am aware of the grammar issue.)

A little later, we saw Penner and Lisa talking and “forming an alliance” (except not really because Lisa voted against him later on.) Penner recognized Lisa from The Facts of Life. He said in a confessional that he thinks Lisa could go far under the radar, which is just what I had said in my last blog. Lisa is very likeable and not seen as a threat. She currently seems to be in a very good spot.

Next we saw Penner and Skupin “aligning” (except, once again, not really). So those sneaky little producers tricked me. (They’ve been doing that to me quite a lot this season.) I was led to believe at this point that Penner was in a good position. Little did I know how much power Jeff Kent had.

Jeff spoke with Artis, Pete, and Malcolm saying that they need to get Penner out because Jeff does not want a returning player beating him. Because Penner had the idol, it was decided that the vote should be split between Penner and RC. At this point, I was just amazed to see how everyone was interacting. In many recent seasons of Survivor, the two tribes stuck together a lot more after the merge. The original alliances stayed strong and focused on getting people from the other tribe out. In this season, however, there seems to be no tribal division now that the merge has happened. Everyone is mixing. At this point, I still was not convinced that Penner was in too much danger. I mean, in the last episode, Jeff and Carter had talked about getting out Penner but later changed their minds.

So then it was time for a challenge. This one was an endurance challenge, which I loved! The survivors had to hold onto a handle which was attached to a rope which was attached to a bucket which contained 25% of the person’s body weight. It seemed more “fair” that way, which made me happy in my heart because I do not have a lot of strength, so challenges where I would have to hold the same amount of weight as muscular men would make me automatically feel like a failure. The last man and last woman each would get immunity. Skupin was the first one out. Then, surprisingly, Pete dropped out; I expected him to be stronger than that. Penner was next, and he apparently did not like Jeff Probst’s comments on the topic. Lisa and Malcolm dropped out next. I thought Malcolm would do better, but in a scene on cbs.com, he said that there was, “No reason to wear myself out,” which I suppose was true. RC dropped out next and then Abi, who surprised me by making it as far as she did. So Denise won out of the women! She is so awesome! Artis was next to drop out. Then it came down to Jeff and Carter. Jeff told Carter that whoever drops out would owe the other person. Since they were both in an alliance, I wasn’t surprised that Jeff was willing to let Carter win.

After the challenge, RC said that she is in a good place. She had no idea that people would be writing her name down. Skupin then went off on his own to talk to Jeff Kent and try to align with him. He basically abandoned RC. Skupin seemed to let his emotions get in the way of thinking logically. He said something along the lines of, “Unless God himself appears before me and speaks to me, I will not be in an alliance with Pete and Abi.” He was so ready and willing to flip that he did not even realize that an alliance with Jeff Kent would not take him far. Jeff even said to Skupin that he wants Penner out because he’s a returning player. Come on, Skupin, after you help Jeff attempt to get Penner out, who do you think his next target will be once Penner is gone?

Just like in the last episode Jeff and Carter were talking about Penner and whether or not they should vote him out when Penner walked up to them. They failed to convince me that they are with him, but it seemed to me that Penner wholeheartedly believed them. When it came time for them to leave for tribal council, I was then convinced that Penner was for sure going home. He did not seem to be expecting to be voted out. I was a little confused because I did not catch who RC and Penner were voting for. I’m not sure if they didn’t say, or if I just missed that part. In fact, I really wasn’t sure where a lot of people stood at that point.

Once the survivors arrived at tribal council some of them did not have a torch yet because they’ve never been to tribal before. It was apparently the first time a tribe had never been to tribal council before the merge. Denise, on the other hand, had been to every single one. Poor Denise…and yet she survived every tribal council, so yay for her! I was so excited to see Abi and RC go at it. It was just like Stephanie and I acted out in the podcast episode that I was a guest on. So much drama and hatred! And for no reason!

So they all voted, and—as usual—Jeff Probst sayed, “I’ll go tally the votes.” Then a bunch of the survivors looked behind them for some reason. I think Abi started it; she looked back, and it was like a ripple effect with others then looking back as well. At that moment, I thought a wild animal was going to pop out of the woods and start attacking Abi’s face, but instead, the rituals continued as usual and the survivors’ glances turned back to Jeff Probst. When he said, “If anyone has the hidden immunity idol, and you want to play it, now would be the time to do so” I was so sure that Penner wouldn’t play his. I thought that he thought that he was safe, thought I about he (I just wanted to add a little more redundancy to that sentence). But low and behold, Penner played his idol! That’s awesome! Smart move, Penner. So Jeff read the votes, and Pete got two votes. So that was who Penner and RC voted for. Interesting. So RC got voted out, and Pete breathed a sigh of relief. I thought RC would make it farther, but I loved the blindside!

Penner is obviously in a horrible position right now, and I have a feeling that Skupin will be the next target after him. After that, I am trying to figure out who will be in danger next. Jeff and Carter are close. Pete, Abi, and Artis (I guess) are close. Malcolm and Denise are close. Lisa…I don’t know if she’s really close with anyone, but I can’t see anyone wanting to get her out anytime soon. I personally think it’s time for people to vote out Jeff Kent. He’s too darn strategic and running the game right now. I think Malcolm and Denise would be more likely to stick with Pete, Abi, and Artis then to stick with Jeff and Carter. We’ll just have to see, though. So many things are up in the air right now, and I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to see how this season plays out.

So last time on Survivor, Dawson got voted out, or as Jeff narrated: “Kissed her chances goodbye.”

In this week’s episode, on Kalabaw, Katie and Denise talked about getting rid of Penner. I was glad to see that Katie was playing the game a bit and that Denise was keeping her options open.

On Tandang, people don’t like Michael much anymore. They are running low on rice, and apparently Michael eats it raw and thinks it gets cooked in his stomach or something. Artis complained about Michael again (for the second time out of his very few confessionals). I am looking forward to the day when Artis has more to say than just complaints about Skupin.

Speaking of food, the reward challenge was for food! Tandang had to sit out one man and one woman for the challenge, which consisted of rolling a big ball into a goal. It was one of those super awkward challenges where it was really muddy, and everyone started wrestling each other and getting in awkward positions. I felt a little uncomfortable. After a while, everyone got tired out, and I thought, “Well, this was kind of a challenge fail.” We saw some of the tribe members not involved in the challenge at that point just sit down to watch. After about an hour of failing, Penner and Skupin started proposing deals about giving the reward to Kalabaw if Tandang would give them all their rice. Jeff Probst was open to a plan if they all agreed on it. Penner said that they do not need the rice because he’ll catch the fish. So Kalabaw gave up all their rice so they could eat some sandwiches. It was a weird outcome to a fail of a challenge

At the reward, we saw a beautiful, sentimental moment when Kalabaw read their letters from home.

On Tandang, Artis was super angry about them giving up the reward for some rice. In fact everyone besides Michael and RC were pretty pissed. If they hated the plan so much, why did they agree to it at the challenge? Why did they let Michael make the decision for them?

Kalabaw was not happy at the end of the reward challenge either because of the risk of having no food. Carter said, “I don’t know if my body can last through this game.” If Penner was Ozzy, I would not doubt the promise of fish. Penner, however, should not have promised his tribe food when all he could bring in was a couple small fish.

During this episode I had a random thought about Lisa. She started out seeming so weak and probably would have gone home soon if she was on a weaker tribe. However, now she seems to have adjusted well. Now she seems like a major underdog who might end up making it far. She’s not a threat, and she’s likeable, so people might take her along with them. I don’t think she will win, but I think she can make it way farther than I originally thought.

I liked the reward challenge a lot. Lisa and Denise were the slingshot girls for their tribes; they slung a ball in the slingshot towards their tribemates who had nets to catch it with. Katie did poorly in the challenge; Malcolm did really well. Tandang ended up winning immunity…again.

So did this mean that Katie would be going home? It’s getting to the point where I’m sure they are close to the merge, so I would base my votes on alliances and who I trust more than on who will or will not help your tribe win challenges. None of the tribes seem super close as a tribe, so I think the post-merge alliances and flopping will be fun to watch.

On Kalabaw, Jeff Kent said to Carter, “We gotta pull the Pennor Punch.” May I just say that there were many quotes from this episode that I enjoyed.

When Penner walked up to Jeff and Carter, Carter said, “Penner, what do you wanna do: Katie or Penner? …I mean, Katie or Denise?” Good move Carter. Smooth.

Katie obviously wanted to get rid of Penner. However, Carter and Jeff were so unsure of themselves. They were not doing a good job convincing Penner that he was safe, in my opinion. So they headed off to tribal council, and again we did not see Denise involved much in the strategizing.

According to Penner, tribe life has been a “drama-free zone.” When you compare them to Tandang, I would have to agree. Jeff Probst asked Jeff Kent if he has ever played a game that involves strategy like this before, and Jeff, the former baseball player, said no and that Survivor “sucks.” It took a while for him to explain himself, but I am offended that he would say that Survivor sucks, though I think I understand what he was saying. So Jeff Probst said that everyone knew this would be a blindside, but they were not sure who it would be. Penner did not play his idol, but he didn’t need to. They chose to vote Katie out. I do not think it was a good decision. I think Katie would have stuck with them more, and Penner is more likely to switch whenever he feels the need to. We’ll see if that decision comes back to bite them in the butt. Well, that’s it for this episode. Thanks for reading, and have an awesome day!

Hi, everyone! I’m Nicole Decker, the former co-host for David and Nicole’s Survivor Podcast. I had to stop doing the podcast because I will be going away to South Africa soon. Once I am there, I probably will not get to watch Survivor. However, for now, I am still able to enjoy this awesome show, and I’ve found that I have a lot of opinions that I want to share. So David came up with the idea that I could blog about it. Also, this week, I get to be a guest on David and Jeff’s Survivor Podcast! It will be great to be back on the podcast! Anyways, here are my thoughts on the latest episode of Survivor…

Previously on Survivor Kalabaw developed distinct alliances: 3 men vs. 3 women. On Tandang Abi and RC drama continue. Matsing lost another challenge, and Russell went home.

Last episode, I thought it would have been nice for Russell to give the hidden immunity idol clue to Malcolm and Denise right after they voted him out to show that he still supported them and wanted them to have a chance in the game. However, I didn’t expect it to happen at all. That would be a Nicole move, not a Russell move. Anyways, in this episode Malcolm and Denise started to wonder what will happen next. Denise correctly guessed that the two of them would be split up between the two remaining tribes. Since they realized that they might not be returning to their camp, they began a desperate search for the hidden immunity idol. I thought it would be very unlikely for them to find it without the clue, but they did! Malcolm’s such a smart cookie!

I was disappointed when they arrived at the reward challenge and Jeff told Malcolm and Denise to drop their buffs. I wanted him to tell everyone to drop their buffs! I wanted a total switch-up of tribes! I love seeing people who think they are in control and in a secure alliance, suddenly separated from each other and freaking out. I wanted to see what someone like Abi would do if, for example, her dear Petey boy ended up on the other tribe. I also worried that this would be an extreme disadvantage for Malcolm and Denise since they would be joining tribes where tight bonds have already been formed. In the end, they fit in much better than I would have thought.

The reward challenge was not as exciting as previous challenges that we’ve been seen, but I was happy to see the reward challenge in existence nonetheless. Tandang won, meaning that Malcolm finally experienced his first win of the game. Yay for him!

Artis was talking in the shelter after the challenge and my first thought was, “Who is that guy?” Whatever he said, it wasn't very important or I would have remembered it. Pete and Malcolm started talking right away, which caused RC to be unhappy; she did not want another person in alliance with Pete. Right now, RC does not seem to be in the best position, but at this point I still feel like anything can happen, especially if Tandang continues to win. If they make it to the merge without ever voting someone out, a lot could happen, especially considering the other players might be merging in with them. Right now, I have very high hopes for Malcolm. He just made an alliance with someone who has the idol and told him so; they don’t know he has an idol too.

On the podcast, David and Jeff have been predicting who will get the most and least confessionals. David had been doing a darn good job predicting Katie with the least, but as soon as I saw her giving a confessional, I said, “Katie’s speaking!! Take that, David!” Katie was even talking strategy saying that she was glad to have Denise on the tribe now so that she can join their all-girl alliance. Too bad Katie never tried to follow through with that plan.

On Kalabaw, Dana started having problems including being super cold and wet and having a fever. They called medical in, and Dawson’s first thought is, “Omg, like, Jeff came to the island! I want to hug him and latch onto him and go crazy…but I guess I shouldn’t since Dana’s like dying or whatever.” Medical determined that Dana could continue if she so chooses, so now it was up to her!! And cue commercial break! No, I don’t want to buy that vacuum cleaner or that car! Ok, why is Miley Cyrus going to be on Two and a Half Men, and what’s with that awful haircut? Ok, back to Survivor…So Dana decided she needed to go home, and that was the end of the all-girl alliance on that tribe. You know, I really wanted to see Dana go farther in the game because she’s such a unique woman, unlike some of the other girls out there...So Katie was upset that she lost her closest ally and apparently did not really know how to go on from there.

At the immunity challenge Abi sat out, and Jeff asked her how many challenges she’s actually participated in, and she said two. She participated in the reward challenge earlier in the episode and the very first challenge of the season. Pathetic. If she had originally been on Matsing, she would have been voted out a long time ago and we wouldn't have had to hear her annoying accent anymore. I always like a good obstacle course, so the challenge was enjoyable to me. There was a moment right after Pennor chopped through the wood to release the puzzle pieces that it looked like he just tossed the ax in the air. I would have to re-watch that part to see if I saw that correctly, but seriously, don’t go tossing axes around, dude! Do you want someone else to be medically evacuated? Anyways, it was a freakin’ close challenge, but eventually Kalabaw lost. Penner was not happy.

After the challenge, it was made clear that Katie sucks. She said it, and everyone on the tribe said it. Even her now closest ally, Dawson, said it. Also, the women totally failed at getting Denise in their alliance. They didn’t talk to her or anything. So Denise made an alliance with Jeff; she’s with the men! So Katie and Dawson were on the chopping block and neither of them seemed to notice/care/scramble. Dawson just decided to make matters worse for herself by messing with Jeff because she knew he’s a former professional baseball player. She thought it was fun, like playing with a little mouse in a cage or something. Smart thinking, Dawson—make the guy with a strong alliance nervous that you’re going to reveal his deep dark secret and expect to still stay in the game.

One thing I noticed is that even though Denise is in the male alliance, she doesn't seem to be that tight with them yet. Every time they showed the alliance strategizing, it was just the three men, so they obviously made decisions without her. Though Denise was in a good spot for this vote, she’s definitely going to be on the outs of her alliance, so she’ll have to start forming some tighter bonds with perhaps Jeff or a different man if she wants to stay longer. At merge, if she makes it there, she might be a swapper.

Why, oh why did Dawson and Katie not stick together? Both of them were not thinking at all! Katie, they voted Dawson out because she was weak and didn't do much around camp (and almost exposed Jeff Kent’s secret). If they continue to vote weak people out, who do you think is going next? You yourself admitted that you sucked at the challenge. If you had worked hard to stick with Dawson and keep her around then you would be a lot safer. Basically, Katie and Dawson both dug their own graves. So Dawson got voted out, but before she left, she hugged Jeff Probst and kissed him on the cheek. I don’t think anyone’s ever done that before. I can’t blame her, though. I would love to do the same. Anyways, Dawson wants a motorcycle and all these things from Jeff Kent since she didn't reveal his secret. Do you think she’ll get them?

Well, that’s about it for my blog. My guess for the next episode is that Kalabaw will lose the challenges and Katie will be voted out. We’ll see, though. Thanks for reading, and be sure to listen to the podcast!

The Best Players

When people choose the best Survivor players they usually choose people who dominated the game. (I.e. Russell, Rob, Parvati, Etc.) But most of the time on Survivor, the people who dominated the game do not win. Sure you have the occasional Richard Hatch, Brian Heidik, Tom Westman, or J.T. Thomas. But I would say at least 75% of the time, the person who dominates the game does not win. Russell has never won. Rob has never won yet. Parvati has only won once. So what qualifies a person as being the best player? Is it dominating the game or winning the game?

This is what I find to be the biggest difference I have with a lot of Survivor fans. My opinion is that being the best player is winning the game. Whoever won deserved to win. Whoever won played the best game. Even if they did not dominate the season, they still did something right that the other contestants did wrong. So when I list who I think the best players ever are, I only choose winners. To me, I feel that if you did not win, you were not the best. So as much as it almost pains me to say it: Natalie was a better player than Russell in Samoa. Amber was a better player than Rob in All Stars. Sandra was a better player than Parvati and Russell in Heroes vs. Villains. None of them dominated the game, however, they all we better players. They have 1 Million Dollars to prove it.

Sure you can blame it on the jury being bitter. You can say they were voting for a loser and not a winner. You can even try and say there is a flaw in the game. The fact is however, that this is the game, like it or not. Since the very beginning of Survivor, this has been the game. Not only do you have to vote people out, but you have to get them to vote for you in the end. Rob did not do this in All Stars and Russell did not do this in either season. You have to expect that the jury is going to be bitter. You have to think about that before you vote people out. And while Natalie, Sandra, or Amber did not dominate the strategy or challenges, they thought about the jury. They all knew that going into the final tribal council they had a better chance of winning than Russell and Rob.

Once it gets to the final tribal council, dominating the game does not matter. What does matter is the jury and how you handled them in the game. I would love for someone to explain to me a way that I am wrong. Believe me; it killed me when Amber and Natalie won. (Not Sandra though, I liked her.) I hate it just as much as the next person. But they did win and deserved to win, because if they didn’t deserve it, they would not have won.

I hate it when people say “The best person doesn’t always win.” Because by saying that, you are saying there is a flaw in the game. It may not have been who you liked, who you wanted, who won challenges, who was best strategist, or who was dominating the season, but the best player always wins. In the end, whoever wins played the best game.

I would love to hear you comments on this. I am sure that a majority of people disagree with me. Please comment and tell me why I am wrong.
