Sound is a powerful thing. Whether we’re talking the gentle patter of a spring rain or the roar of a fighter jet, any given sound can evoke numerous emotions. Research even suggests various sounds can do everything from reduce stress to promote healing. With this in mind, we invite you to spend some time Listening In. In our cover story, we poll eight SNC faculty members about their favorite sounds. Their answers ranged from amusing to insightful to instructive. Also new at snc.edu/magazine: • Our magazine feature extending your St. Norbert education continues with another short profile of a course taught by our own faculty. This time, we sit in on COME 352 Media Effects with Valerie Kretz (Communication & Media Studies). • Late-night discussions in Madelaine/Lorraine Hall led the Rev. Matthew Dougherty ’09 to the priesthood. Conversations with his Norbertine confrères led him to Yale’s doctoral program in the University of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. He shares his journey with Mike Dauplaise ’86. • St. Norbert College is getting ready for its new crop of students … and its new normal amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Our gallery shows the steps the college is taking to keep our community safe on campus. Then check out the new Big Picture for a peaceful moment in the Shakespeare Garden. […]

Working remotely through the coronavirus pandemic has given publications associate Erika Ditzman ’21 some new challenges and opportunities, along with the chance to pilot the remote working experience we’ll be offering our student team this fall. More than that: She was able to represent SNC at her very first full-blown professional conference. With professional travel on hold through the pandemic and budgets carefully scrutinized, conference participation looked to be thin on the ground this summer. But as conferences went virtual, new opportunities also began to present themselves. In particular, this year’s North American Catholic Media Conference (CMC) opened its doors to all working in the field. Even better, the CMC worked with its sponsors to make the full experience available at no cost. Erika jumped at the chance – typically offered to only one delegate from SNC – to attend with the college’s publications team. She was joined by director Susan Allen, associate editor Hannah O’Brien and digital marketing specialist Hannah Kruse ’19. Erika wore two hats at the conference since she is also co-editor of the St. Norbert Times. Along the way she not only picked up a great new line to add to her resume but also took careful notes that […]

Each year, just before the semester begins, the college president hosts a welcome-back dinner for all faculty and staff. The highlight of the evening comes at the end of the meal, when tiny chocolate cups of Frigolet – a Norbertine liqueur – are served to each table and the Norbertines present lead us in a traditional Flanders drinking song: the “Vivat.” This year, it was Father Rowland De Peaux ’48, now in his 10th decade, who stood to do the honors. We’re a magazine for an audience across multiple generations, but one produced in an environment that, by its very nature, is almost completely populated by the 18- to 65-year-old crowd. We love covering the doings of young adults – our students – and of the working population in higher-ed – our faculty and staff. But their constantly innovating, constantly producing presence poses something of a challenge if we hope to depict the full spectrum of human flourishing. That’s why it’s such a delight when we have the chance to feature young children or seniors within our pages. Our photo features this issue span the decades, thanks to a young visitor to SNC Day and, of course, to our very […]

Thanks to Maureen Callahan ’97 for this guest post written following an alumni group visit to the Art institute of Chicago with the Rev. Jim Neilson ’88. Callahan writes, “I left the museum that afternoon reminded that even if one has observed something several times, sometimes taking a closer look with a connoisseur brings a whole new perspective. The Japanese proverb states: ‘Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.’ How true it is!” “You should come away from a work of art with more questions than answers,” a group of SNC alumni were recently told. This lucky group, myself included, had the opportunity to perfect our understanding of Picasso and gain a greater appreciation of Renoir in the context of a tour of the Art Institute of Chicago. Under the direction of Father James Neilson (known to us all as Father Seamus), we were offered an insider’s point of view of the priceless collection. The sunny late-April afternoon began with a reception complete with stunning views of Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Café Terzo Piano, located on the top floor of the art institute. After catching up […]

Melissa Yelle ’05 shares an SNC memory that recaptures the joy of the college learning experience and the lifelong flourishing that great teachers foster. It feels just right to share this now, as we head into Commencement weekend. All those new grads, all those possibilities! First day as a college student, and expectations are high. You know that this is going to be something special. It’s your blank slate, a chance to have a new identity. First class in your discipline, and you can’t wait. You sit with all of the other students. Watching the clock. Ready for something to happen. Your professor walks in, silently. Sits down. And waits for what seems like an eternity. The room is silent. Captivated. Finally, he starts to sing. Half singing, half reciting the ballad of “Beowulf” – in Old English. Hearing this, you imagine a roaring fire, “Game of Thrones”-style; imagine listening to it as if it were the thousandth time. Even though it’s the first time. You know you will carry this moment with you for the rest of your life. You wonder briefly if everyone else feels this way, or if they think it’s silly. Regardless, you marvel at this teacher’s […]

It’s the work of publications intern Emilie Smith ’20, who’s taken this channel under her wing – and lots more besides! We truly value the work of our student associates, who get real-world professional experience in our busy office. We just couldn’t get it done without them! Now about three and a half years into my internship here at the office of communications, I can say that I have dabbled in a variety of different jobs and projects, all with different goals, outcomes, timelines and directions. I’ve written quite a bit, have read too many articles to count, have spent days fact checking, organizing and distributing … . It sometimes feels like there isn’t much else I could be doing! It’s like I have my foot in a bunch of different doors here, and there are only a few I haven’t yet to open. Which was why I was absolutely ecstatic when I was asked to start interacting with our SNC Magazine Facebook page. I’ve certainly worked with online publications, writing for @St.Norbert, editing SNC News and working to […]

Letty Mundt ’19, publications intern, was among many who lent their time and talents to help ensure that visitors to the 10th annual SNC Day had the best possible day out on campus. She recalls the experience in this guest post. As the newest intern at the SNC Office of Communications, I’m beginning to dip my toes in the water of a field I never thought I’d find myself at the shores of: journalism. Reporting the facts and experiences I discover, fully grounded in realism. When I’m off the college clock, I’m an author of a young-adult fantasy trilogy and an artist addicted to painting cats in human clothing. I write about elemental powers and alternate universes, and doodle trees in shades of outer space. My future is in creativity and imagination; I’m about as far away from realism as it gets. Taking an internship at this office excited me with its promise of learning about a different type of writing than I’m used to – but it also got me wondering where my creative flair might be of further use. Volunteering in the Bush Art Center last Saturday for the SNC Day celebrations created this kind of opportunity for me. It gave me […]
