Happy New Year everyone!

I'm excited about 2017. A new year, new goals, new wishes. I like to start off my new year by organizing my office. You'd be surprised what junk I accumulate through out the year. So that's what I'll be doing this week, along with starting the fourth book in the Immortal Hearts of San Francisco Series, titled: Possessed by a Vampire. I know everyone is expecting Gage's story, but Elvis will not leave me alone and demands to have his story told next. I do need to listen to my heart on this and go with it. So this next book in the series belongs to Elvis. As promised, I will be announcing the winner of the Kindle fire from the Rafflecopter contest I had, so be sure to see if you won. How many times can a heart be broken?

Mine has been broken twice.

My mother, Sofie Davidson, formally Sofie Brighton, always said that losing a spouse from death was easier than going through a divorce. She ought to know, she’d been through both. The divorce from my stepfather two years ago had been devastating to my mother. Oliver Davidson had raised me from the time I was six as if I’d been his own daughter. But their divorce didn’t break my heart. To my mother’s dismay, Oliver was still in my life, still playing the role of doting father. He even walked me down the aisle today when I got married with my mother flanking my other arm.

My father, Pierce Brighton, had died when I was four. Some freak accident that my mother never wanted to talk about. That was a dark day. My mother stood at the front door crying while two policemen politely tipped their hats, saying how sorry they were for her loss. The rest of the conversation is jumbled in my head. All I remember or understood at the time was that my daddy wasn’t coming home anymore. That was the first time my heart had been broken wide open.

I squeezed my eyes shut as I thought back to that day wishing he could have been here with me now. But in truth, I couldn’t have asked for a better father than Oliver has been. That was in the past. Today was my future. Then I took a deep cleansing breath, embracing the new life I was about to partake. The ceremony had turned out perfectly. Sprinkles of rose pedals flanked each side of the aisle as we approached the archway where Craig stood with all his entourage of best friends. Along with his best man, Joel, there were five groomsmen standing by, which meant I had five bridesmaids in addition to my maid of honor, Lissa. I didn’t really have that many best friends. Two would have been my choice, Kristen and Lissa, but Craig had insisted we have his six good buddies in the wedding. I’d asked a couple of the girls from the restaurant I’d managed along with his two sisters. It turned out to be just right. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect ceremony. Craig looked gorgeous in his dark tux. He wore a white rose on his lapel and his light brown hair was combed back away from his face instead of hanging down over his forehead like it normally did, partially shielding his beautiful blue eyes, which sparkled with love today. Or maybe it was lust. I had t admit I’d been feeling a little lusty myself when I’d seen him standing there as I walked down the aisle and the way he’d grinned during the ceremony I had to hope he was thinking of what he’d be doing later. He looked amazing.

The reception hall exploded with music, food, and laughter. Twenty tables, each graced with white rose bouquet center pieces, circled the dance floor where Craig and I’d just finished all the customary dances. I’d danced with Oliver, while Craig had danced with his mother. Shortly after that, Craig excused himself, kissed me on the cheek and took off toward a group of his buddies he’d gone to college with. I watched him walk. His cool swagger ignited a heat within my core. He was gorgeous. He was mine. All six-foot two inches of taut muscle and smooth flesh. All mine. Lust aroused as I thought about what the evening had in store for us. When he reached the guys, he took the shot glass one of them held out, filled with something I assumed was Jack Daniels.

A fast tune blared from the speakers as the D-Jay stood behind a large black console pushing buttons on his equipment. Couples danced, mostly women bopping to the beat with each other as their husbands, boyfriends, or dates stood around drinking beer or cocktails solving all the problems of the world.

“Grace! Come on. You can’t miss this. It’s your wedding.” Kristen grabbed my arm and tugged me into the line dance that had quickly formed in the middle of the room. Her soft green gown flowed over the floor along with her and I giggled trying my best to keep up. Line dancing wasn’t exactly my strong suit. I managed a restaurant and bar, or had until I’d met Craig. I’d always been the one standing back watching all the fun from the other side of the bar. Until that night he walked through the room. His eyes caught mine. He smirked then proceeded to ignore me for an hour. I only knew he was ignoring me because I couldn’t stop glancing over at the table where he sat with his back to me while he laughed and joked with his friends. It was almost an hour to the minute before he came up to the bar and asked what time I got off work. I’d been completely taken by surprise. Here was this gorgeous man who could probably have had any woman in the entire bar—of which there were at least half a dozen beautiful ladies milling about—and he was asking me what time I finished. I’d taken a step back, unsure he was even speaking to me. To this day, I still wonder what it was about me that attracted him to me that night. I hadn’t exactly been dressed with the intention of attracting a guy, especially someone like Craig. I had very little make-up on and my hair hadn’t been washed for three days. In fact, I’d had to pull it back into a pony tail just to make it through another day before shampooing again. My hair was waist long and took forever to dry and style.

When I didn’t answer Craig right away, he’d asked again. I stammered a bit, but then found my voice and told him seven-thirty. He then informed me that he’d be waiting for me at the front door because he was taking me to dinner. I thought for sure he’d just been kidding around, but there he was standing at the door at seven-thirty. I hadn’t been in the habit of dating customers, but there was something about Craig that I couldn’t resist.

Kristen grabbed my hand, pulling me out of my reverie. She gave me a, what’s-wrong-with-you look and I realized I’d been so engrossed in my thoughts of Craig that I’d been standing there beside her without moving. “Sorry.” I smiled and began to copy what the other dancers were doing, but as hard as I tried to follow the gal’s steps in front of me, I still messed up. Just as I was beginning to get the turns down, the confusing and exhausting line dance ended. I wrapped my arms around Kristen as we laughed and hugged each other.

“That was nuts,” I proclaimed, holding my hand over my chest trying desperately to catch my breath.

“It would have been easier if you’d moved your feet more in the beginning.” She laughed. “I bet you were daydreaming about Craig, right? I know I would have been. Grace, you just married the most eligible and richest bachelor in this county. You must be ecstatic!”

Not to mention maybe a little overwhelmed, I thought to myself. Then I ran my fingertips down the delicate white lace and pearl gown I wore to smooth it out. I’d found the dress online. At first, my mother had squawked at the idea of purchasing a wedding dress online. She couldn’t imagine not being able to try it on first and she was a little disappointed not to be able to go out shopping for it. She’d always told me that was something she’d been looking forward to since the day I was born. I had assured her though, that no matter what, it could always be altered. When it arrived, all her doubts were forgotten as soon as I lifted it out of the package. It was the most gorgeous gown we’d ever set eyes on. It was sleeveless with scalloped bodice and fell low in the back followed by a line of tiny pearl buttons. The delicate material hugged my rear end, then draped to the floor, fanning out behind me.

“The wedding was beautiful. And you make the most beautiful bride, Grace. I know Craig has been so utterly enamored by you today,” Kristin said. “He couldn’t keep his eyes off of you during the ceremony.”

And I hadn’t been able to tear mine away from his either. This had been a fairy tale day to be sure. Kristen embraced me then bounced her way back onto the dance floor to join a small group of ladies bopping to the tune of ACDC’s, “You Shook Me All Night Long.” The giddiness building up inside of me, made me want to shout with glee and I couldn’t contain the smile on my face as I went in search of my new husband. New as of about three hours ago. I believed it was time to cut the cake.

Glancing around the large ballroom of the Terra d’Oro for my husband, elated about referring to Craig as my husband, I didn’t spot him anywhere. I strolled across the wooden dance floor and headed for the door to the outside patio, passing decorated tables cluttered with empty and half full glasses of champagne, sidestepping guests with a polite apologetic, I’ll-be-right-back-gesture with my finger, in search of the man I’d be sleeping with every night for the rest of my life. The patio was much like the inside with partially filled glasses of champagne and other mixed cocktails. Oliver hadn’t skimped on the amenities; that was for certain. He hadn’t even made a remark when my mother announced that there had to be an open bar at her only daughter’s wedding. I never had any doubts about Oliver’s love for me. He’d adopted me as his own shortly after he’d married my mom. When they divorced two years ago, he made it quite clear that he would always be a part of my life. That, I was, for all intents and purposes, still his daughter and would always be. So of course, when it came to funding the wedding, he was all in, even though I had assured him that it wasn’t necessary since Craig’s family was essentially wealthy and had offered to fund the event, but Oliver would hear of it.

At least Craig’s parents were pleased with the way the wedding turned out. His parents lived on the Tiburon Peninsula, a ritzy neighborhood in the hills across the bay from San Francisco where the average priced home ranged from one point five million to fifteen million dollars.

I searched around the small gatherings of various guests for Craig, but didn’t see him anywhere. Where was he?

“Gracie,” Joel, Craig’s best man sang my name as he sidled up close to me and draped his arm around my shoulders.

I laughed. “Joel, are you drunk?”

“Nope. But I’m on my way. It’s not every day one of the four Kemosabes gets hitched.” The endearing term used by the four grown men since—I was told—the fourth grade, came out a bit slurred, but most definitely understood. “You’ve stolen him away with your charm and our little private club will never be the same.”

I laughed again. “Trust me; I’ll do my best to make sure Craig always stays close friends with all of you.”

“You better, or I’ll just have to steal you away from him. You’re too good for him anyway.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, but… have you seen Craig? I haven’t been able to find him.”

He pursed his lips together making tiny wrinkles on his lips as he peered over me, his eyes narrowing as he searched the area. “He’s not out here. Last time I saw him he was at the bar with Clancy.”

“Okay thanks,” I said and slipped away before he had a chance to stop me and searched for Clancy, aka Les Clancy, another member of said Kemosabes. Clancy was right where I thought he’d be. Still standing at the bar where I’d seen him last having a shot of something with Craig. But no Craig anywhere in sight. I sighed. I didn’t want to talk to Les, I just wanted my husband.

“Grace!” Kristen caught my arm again. “Come dance.”

“Later. I need to find Craig. Have you seen him?”

She shook her head. “I’m sure he’s around here somewhere. It’s his wedding.” She gave me that silly grin she had when ever she’d been drinking and twirled back onto the dance floor, ignoring me. God, was everyone drunk at this wedding except me? I just hoped Oliver was still okay with having to pay for all the booze that seemed to be slipping way too easily down everyone’s throats. I walked out into the hallway. I might as well take advantage of the time and visit the ladies room, which was all the way down at the other end of the hallway. I passed a couple a closed doors on the way and strolled by one left slightly ajar. I back-stepped as I heard someone moaning. I stopped and heard it again. Thinking someone was ill, I pushed the door all the way open and stared at the two bodies entangled in a frenzied heat.

Chelle’s eyes opened slowly as I slipped a finger into her folds. This was the third night in a row she’d found me at the diner. We’d chat for a while there, and then we’d end up back at my place, unable to keep our hands and tongues off each other. But every night, she’d leave. She’d never stay the entire night. I’d teased her about staying for breakfast a couple of times, but she always shook her head, saying she had to go, but never giving me a good reason. Her hands slid up along my chest as her eyes glanced over at the table beside the bed. “Oh, my fucking—”

“Is that the correct time?”

I glanced at the clock on the nightstand. “Yeah, it’s six-fifteen. Good morning.” I smiled and slipped my hand behind her head, tugging her head down so I could nuzzle her neck, but she slid off of me and jumped out of bed.

It's RELEASE DAY for

ROCKED BY A VAMPIRE!

Chapter One

Lane

Lyrics formed in my mind. Words of lust, regret, pain, and pure, unadulterated love morphed into verses and appeared on the music sheet before me. Intermittent chords flowed from my fingers made tangible by the keys of the grand piano. I jotted down notes as I heard them, sealing them to the words. The pen in my hand couldn’t move fast enough to write.

I’d been writing this song for about six months now. No one knew about it. I only worked on it when no one else was around. At the time, I’d thought it would be a good idea to put my emotions down on paper, but now, I didn’t know anymore. Every time I read them, a sick feeling gnawed inside of me, chomping away. Tormenting. Haunting.

It was a ballad, a love song, a sad song. A brooding tune. A melody that no one would probably ever hear. Just my morbid form of meditation needing an outlet. At least that’s what I told myself.

I wasn’t always easy to get along with these days. I knew this. No one had to tell me. And I found it particularly difficult when it came to certain people.

I’d had my share of relationships, or should I say my share of women. In all my two hundred and twenty years, I didn’t think I’d ever had a serious relationship with a woman. Vampire or human.

Some might call me a monster. But does a monster have a conscience? Or know regret? Fear the absence of dignity? I’d been on this planet for a long time. Long enough to know that there was no remedy for self-abhorrence. No therapeutic massage or bath crystals could ever tame the imprints of depression as they embedded their way into each and every one of my nerve endings on a daily basis.

Rock and roll was my life. I lived it, breathed it; it was my salvation. Music had always been a part of me. Without it, I might as well dig a hole in the ground and cover myself up with dirt. Though that wouldn’t kill me. Only aggravate the shit out of me.

There was nothing but silence now. The notes and words stared back at me, waiting for something more. But I had nothing. Nothing to complete the verse, nothing to make the pain go away. I gazed at the ivory keys as if they could magically give me what I needed. I stroked my hand over them in hope.

The piano, the main focal point of the large living area, was the one thing I’d insisted we purchase when we bought this mansion about seventy-five years ago. It had called to me, but back then, it had probably called to my brother also. We were alike in that way.

Voices filtered in from just outside the room, and I quickly gathered up the music sheets, tucking them inside my shirt for safekeeping—or hiding if I was being honest about it.

Shoving myself away from the ivory keys, I strolled to the iron blinds imprisoning us and waited.

Without a word, two bodies came to stand next to me. In a not too distant past, there had been only one. Then my brother Cian had found what he called his soul mate. Who was I to argue about that? So, this was our nightly ritual—stand in front of the iron blinds at sunset and wait for the ugly things to rise and give us our freedom from the daytime prison we existed in.

“I think we should do away with the blinds,” Cian said, sounding ridiculously serious. He had one arm around Maggie and a tumbler of scotch in his free hand. His torn jeans left one knee completely exposed, and the ragged edges of the hems skimmed the top of his bare feet. His shirt hung open, revealing his muscled chest covered in tattoos. I’d heard many ladies utter that my twin had the body of Adonis. I did a mental shrug at the thought. Maggie leaned against him dressed similarly, only her jeans had more holes, and her purple-flowered blouse remained buttoned, but flowed loosely at her waist. Her dark brown locks cascaded over her shoulders in messy curls, giving her that just fucked looked. I smiled. Glad my brother was happy.

“I think love has seeped into your brain and replaced the ventricles with giddy, stupid shit,” I answered.

Cian chuckled. “I won’t argue with that. But I think it’s time for a change. One-way reflective glass.” He said the last part like it was an answer to a question no one had asked.

I gave him a raised eyebrow of interest. “Like mirrored glass?”

“Exactly.”

I nodded.

“There’s a material that’s supposed to block ninety-nine percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. That would be enough to protect us.”

“Make it a hundred, and I’m all for it.”

“We could start with one window and see what happens,” Maggie added in her adorable, female, take-me-to-bed-and-fuck-me voice that was hard to say no to. I knew my brother couldn’t. Which made me somewhat skeptical about just whose idea this was.

“If you want to pretend you’re outside during the day, just go to the artificial sunroom you made.” How many more things was Cian going to change or add to this mansion just to please his woman? This was my house, too.

“She’s right, Lane. These old eyes of ours have been too long in the dark. I think we should give it a try. At least one window to see.”

Fuck. Maybe I was just too broody today. “One window,” I agreed. “But don’t count on me when it comes time to test it out. I know what it’s like being caught out in the sun. The amount of time it takes to become completely incapacitated is seconds. Not a fun day in my book.”

“I’ll try it first,” Maggie said, and I gave her a sideways glare that she didn’t catch.

“No. I will,” my twin, the goddamn hero said. He was six and a half minutes older, but we were as different as fire and water.

“But if it’s me, Ari won’t have as hard a time picking me up if it doesn’t work,” Maggie countered.

“She’s got a point, brother.” I grabbed the drink from his hand and took a sip while he frowned at me. But he didn’t stop me. “You should have brought me one,” I said as I handed it back to him. Ari, our mortal friend, our treasured human confidante, took care of all the things that we couldn’t in the daylight. The sun wouldn’t kill us, but it hurt like a motherfucker. If Maggie were to become ill from the sun’s rays, I’d be sad, but not as devastated as if something were to happen to Cian. Maybe I was a cold-hearted bastard, but I was only being real.

“Hey, you’re all up. Great! I have some good news and some bad news.” The sweet, lyrical voice that belonged to the ‘good and bad news’ was Vanessa. I squeezed my eyes shut at the sound of her sensual vocalization, wishing she would just go away. She wasn’t only Magdalena’s best friend, she was also a witch. Being human was bad enough, I didn’t need the extra added irritant of a witch hanging around.

“Oh, good. The witch has some news to share. Perhaps we should all grab a drink so we can listen without choking on our own saliva at the usual absurdness,” I said flippantly. But in truth, my statement only represented my unwarranted feelings toward the woman; however, a drink was most definitely required if I were to stay and listen. Which I shouldn’t. But I would, because now that she was here, all I wanted to do was stay. Bask in her delicious smells, the melodic sound of her voice, her slender and shapely legs. Though I pretended not to notice her, I never missed a thing about her. I walked over to the credenza and poured myself a generous two fingers of scotch; then added in a little more for good measure.

The witch’s blonde hair was too thick, with long, beautiful curls dyed a pretty, vibrant pink at the tips. Her eyes were too green and bright, I could practically see myself in them. Her lips were too plump and always looked ready to kiss. The curves of her body tormented me, especially when she wore those skintight workout pants she always seemed to parade around in. Tonight, she wore a short, emerald-green skirt that brightened the color of her eyes even more. It didn’t help that her top was low-cut, dipping down to the center of her abdomen, giving me a hint of the lean, tight muscles of her stomach that I ached to run my tongue over. Even her last name sounded decadent and sinful. Creamer. It was very difficult to keep my cock from growing stiff as a board inside my pants whenever I was around her.

But I had rules. No humans, and especially no fucking witches.

Prologue

“What are you drinking?” A frisson of pleasure rolled down Chelle’s spine as a very seductive and sexy male voice spoke softly and close to her ear.
She glanced to her left to check out the person the voice had come from. Gorgeous blue eyes captured hers, and she smiled at the guy they belonged to. He was tall, and she had to tilt her head up to see him. Dark waves cascaded down to his shoulders. He had sexy stubble covering his jaw, and she wondered if he kept it that way all the time. It sure did look magnificent on him.
“Um...rum and Coke,” she supplied then swiveled back around on the stool she’d perched on at the bar. She didn’t want to keep staring at him. Well, she did, but she didn’t want him to know she wanted to keep gawking at him. She hoped he wasn’t asking about her drink because he figured she was underage—she wouldn’t be twenty-one for another eight months. She had the fake ID she’d gotten from an ex-roommate when the girl had to renew her license, but this was the first time Chelle had ever used it. Brandon, the guy she’d come in with, glanced at Mr. Gorgeous Eyes and made some huffing sound. Brandon and Chelle weren’t a couple. They were just friends from SF State, but sometimes, Brandon acted as if they were more.
“It looks like you could use a refill,” the guy said, and Chelle’s shoulders instantly relaxed as she glanced at the almost empty glass in front of her.
She swiveled back around on the stool to face him and propped her arm on the edge of the bar, affecting a pose of confidence. “That’s very perceptive of you,” she said, feeling slightly more assured that her fake ID was working. The guy at the door had given her a suspicious once-over before he’d examined the California driver’s license she’d handed him. She could have sworn he’d studied it for an entire sixty seconds—or longer—as if there might be a test later and he’d have to recite the age of every female patron in the place.
“It’s one of my many talents.” Mr. Gorgeous Eyes nodded toward the bartender.
“Jory, another for the lady and her friend. On the house.” He grinned. Oh, what a sexy grin it was. “I’m Lane,” he added, and Chelle wasn’t sure what he meant. Was that his name?
“Lane? You mean like…like a road?”
“I suppose. Or you could think of it as a beautiful pathway with a multitude of flowers gracing each side as you stroll down without a care in the world holding hands with your lover.”
Oh. That was…quite remarkable, she had to admit. She instantly felt bad for her snippy response because his description was so much better than just a road, but who named their kid Lane anyway?
“My name is Chelle,” she supplied before he had a chance to ask, hoping it would ease some of the awkwardness and lessen her rudeness.
“Chelle, like from the sea or the snail?”
She smiled. He was quick. She had to give him that. And he had a delicious accent. English, very refined and elegant as though he came from some time long ago. At any rate, his voice was very sensual and pleasant to listen to.
“Touché,” she said.
“Hey, man, I’m Brandon.” Her friend, whom she’d almost forgotten about, stuck his hand out in front of Lane. Lane glanced down at it and smiled before shaking it.
“You’re with the band, right?” Brandon added rather enthusiastically. Geesh, you’d think he was meeting a real celebrity or something.
“Yep.”
“You guys are great. That last set you did tonight was sick. You know, I come in here every Saturday night just to listen to your band.”
Chelle gave Brandon a quick glance. She hadn’t realized he’d even been in this particular bar before tonight. In fact, she hadn’t known Brandon even liked classic rock. She loved rock from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and this guy who’d approached her and was talking with her was in the band. She may not be as enthusiastic as Brandon, but she was interested in the guy. He was hot, and he seemed very enamored with her. She just hoped that having Brandon sitting next to her hadn’t hindered any of that.
“Thanks. I’m glad you and your girlfriend like us.”
“Oh, we’re not a couple,” Brandon quickly supplied. If he hadn’t, he knew she would have, and she was glad he’d covered it with finesse.
“We attend State together,” she said with a smile.
“That’s the best news I’ve heard all night,” Lane whispered close to her face. So close that his lips practically grazed her neck and his warm breath tickled her ear, sending shivers down her spine, leaving her suddenly and completely aroused. Music wafted through the club again. She glanced at the stage where a deejay wearing headphones fiddled with knobs and switches on the large display of electrical equipment in front of him. Foreigner’s Waiting For a Girl Like You gently floated from the speakers and couples entered the dance floor.
“This is one of my favorite songs,” Chelle said with a great amount of yearning in her tone. She closed her eyes and swayed to the sweet, slow rhythm.
“Come on, then. Let’s dance.” Lane grabbed her hand and tugged her to the middle of the dance floor.
He pulled her in and tucked her against him, and she stiffened slightly, not sure of his intentions. She’d danced with strangers before, and while some were gentlemen, others were not.
“Relax. It’s just a dance,” he whispered, his voice heavy and dripping with sex. God, he was gorgeous. She had a difficult time keeping her hand still as she placed it on his broad shoulder. The desire to lower it and rub it over his chest was strong.
After a few minutes, she realized what a great dancer he was and relaxed, letting him lead her smoothly around the dance floor. When the song ended, he released his strong hold on her, but kept her hand in his as he guided her back to her seat.
“That was nice. Thanks,” she said as she sat down and picked up her drink, but his hand came down on the glass and he tugged it away.
“Let me get you a fresh one. You never know what might have landed in that one while we were on the dance floor. Your friend is out there dancing now, too, and I’m sure he didn’t even think about leaving your drink unattended.”
Chelle glanced out at the dancers and smiled when she saw Brandon having a good time with someone other than her, then frowned at the thought of someone slipping something into her drink. “Thanks, but I’ve probably had enough anyway.” As much as she’d enjoyed dancing with Lane and would love to know more about him, she had an important day tomorrow and needed to be on her A-game one hundred percent in the morning. “I’m kind of tired, and I should really go home. I’ve been working all day, and I have an exam tomorrow to study for.” She managed to catch Brandon’s eye and waved at him, indicating that she was leaving. As usual, whenever they went out together, they’d brought separate cars; never wanting to put the other out if one of them wanted to leave earlier.
“Do you need a taxi? I can call one for you.”
“No, I have my car. It’s parked down the road, just half a block.”
“Then I’ll walk you to it. This isn’t exactly the best neighborhood for a beautiful woman to be out walking alone.”
His gallantry was impressive, and he was very considerate. He sure seemed to be concerned about her well-being. Not like most of the jerks she usually met at bars. First, with the drink, then with an escort to her car. Add his chivalry to his handsomeness and height, and he was someone she could most definitely see herself falling for. If he walked her to her car, maybe he would ask for her number.
He glanced at one of the other guys in the band and gestured with his hand that he was leaving. The other guy nodded and smiled. “This way,” he said and placed his hand on the small of her back, leading her through the club and out a back door.
She was pleased when she realized that the exit opened up into an alleyway, right next to where she’d parked.
“That’s me,” she said, pointing at the light blue 1999 Honda at the curb under a streetlight. “How did you know that door would lead right to my car?”
“Lucky guess. You said it was parked a half block down, and this is the only area where parking is allowed.”
“Oh. Right. Well, thanks for walking with me.” She turned to open her car door, but his hand covered hers. Pulling it away from the handle, he used her hand to spin her body to face his. When his lips grazed hers, she didn’t stop him like she normally would have after having just met a guy in a nightclub. She wasn’t the type to give in or be taken so easily. Except, this guy was so damn sexy, it was very difficult to resist him—the plumpness of his lips and the sweet taste of his tongue as it slipped inside, her mouth barely open on a gasp. There was no denying the fact that no matter what her brain told her, her body reacted of its own accord, giving in to his sweet kisses and the tender touch of his hands on her body. His lips were so, so soft on her neck as his tongue made tiny little circles just below her earlobe, driving her crazy with lust. He spun them and backed her up until her back came into contact with the wall on the nearest side of the alley. Their bodies shrouded in shadow.
Then.
What the fuck? He’d bitten her?
She tried to pry herself from his grasp and shoved at him as his sharp teeth penetrated her skin. He began to suck slowly and she became filled with a great sense of nirvana, something hot and sweet flowing through her veins. She stopped resisting. It was almost like an exchange. Her blood for a powerful high she had no desire to stop. She relaxed in his arms, allowing him to suck. His intake grew stronger and stronger, and her legs gave out, but his strong arms held her up against the wall before she could fall. The narrow street behind him became distant, and she began to lose consciousness, or so she thought. Although she couldn’t move any part of her body, she heard him gasp after his teeth retracted from her skin.
“Oh, fuck!” His voice sounded panicky. Then she was in his arms as he carried her back inside the club and placed her body down on a cold floor in some room.
“What the fuck did you do?” another male voice similar to Lane’s barked.
“I…don’t know. I guess I took too much.” Lane lightly tapped Chelle’s cheek. “Wake up. Please. I didn’t mean to take so much. It’s just been so long since I fed, I got carried away. Damn it. I didn’t even need to compel her, she just accepted it all and gave herself to me without any struggle.”
From somewhere above, Chelle watched the two men, the body on the floor, herbody, then her eyes took in her present state in bewilderment. Her spirit floated above as Lane frantically pressed on her corporeal chest to wake her up, but her body didn’t respond to his efforts. Her existence now just a transparent essence, a light beamed to her right. She wanted to go to it. The lure of it was so strong and peaceful.
“Let her go, Lane.”
“I can’t. I’m not a killer. I can’t just let her die.”
As the draw of the light urged her closer, she looked back at the shell she’d once inhabited on the floor. Lane scored his wrist with his fangs and shoved his arm against her lips. To her spirit, the light was strong, warm, comforting. Tranquility she’d only found in dreams. Pleasant dreams. But then something tugged at her.
Life.
There was still so much she wanted to do. So many things she hadn’t experienced, yet. The light would have to wait.
She wanted to live.

He pulled her in and tucked her against him, and she stiffened slightly, not sure of his intentions. She’d danced with strangers before, and while some were gentlemen, others were not.

“Relax. It’s just a dance,” he whispered, his voice heavy and dripping with sex. God, he was gorgeous. She had a difficult time keeping her hand still as she placed it on his broad shoulder. The desire to lower it and rub it over his chest was strong.

After a few minutes, she realized what a great dancer he was and relaxed, letting him lead her smoothly around the dance floor. When the song ended, he released his strong hold on her, but kept her hand in his as he guided her back to her seat.

“That was nice. Thanks,” she said as she sat down and picked up her drink, but his hand came down on the glass and he tugged it away.

“Let me get you a fresh one. You never know what might have landed in that one while we were on the dance floor. Your friend is out there dancing now, too, and I’m sure he didn’t even think about leaving your drink unattended.”

Chelle glanced out at the dancers and smiled when she saw Brandon having a good time with someone other than her, then frowned at the thought of someone slipping something into her drink.

“Thanks, but I’ve probably had enough anyway.” As much as she’d enjoyed dancing with Lane and would love to know more about him, she had an important day tomorrow and needed to be on her A-game one hundred percent in the morning. “I’m kind of tired, and I should really go home. I’ve been working all day, and I have an exam tomorrow to study for.” She managed to catch Brandon’s eye and waved at him, indicating that she was leaving. As usual, whenever they went out together, they’d brought separate cars; never wanting to put the other out if one of them wanted to leave earlier.

“Do you need a taxi? I can call one for you.”

“No, I have my car. It’s parked down the road, just half a block.”

“Then I’ll walk you to it. This isn’t exactly the best neighborhood for a beautiful woman to be out walking alone.”

His gallantry was impressive, and he was very considerate. He sure seemed to be concerned about her well-being. Not like most of the jerks she usually met at bars. First, with the drink, then with an escort to her car. Add his chivalry to his handsomeness and height, and he was someone she could most definitely see herself falling for. If he walked her to her car, maybe he would ask for her number.

He glanced at one of the other guys in the band and gestured with his hand that he was leaving. The other guy nodded and smiled. “This way,” he said and placed his hand on the small of her back, leading her through the club and out a back door.

She was pleased when she realized that the exit opened up into an alleyway, right next to where she’d parked.

“That’s me,” she said, pointing at the light blue 1999 Honda at the curb under a streetlight. “How did you know that door would lead right to my car?”

“Lucky guess. You said it was parked a half block down, and this is the only area where parking is allowed.”

“Oh. Right. Well, thanks for walking with me.” She turned to open her car door, but his hand covered hers. Pulling it away from the handle, he used her hand to spin her body to face his. When his lips grazed hers, she didn’t stop him like she normally would have after having just met a guy in a nightclub. She wasn’t the type to give in or be taken so easily. Except, this guy was so damn sexy, it was very difficult to resist him—the plumpness of his lips and the sweet taste of his tongue as it slipped inside, her mouth barely open on a gasp. There was no denying the fact that no matter what her brain told her, her body reacted of its own accord, giving in to his sweet kisses and the tender touch of his hands on her body. His lips were so, so soft on her neck as his tongue made tiny little circles just below her earlobe, driving her crazy with lust. He spun them and backed her up until her back came into contact with the wall on the nearest side of the alley. Their bodies shrouded in shadow.

Then.

What the fuck? He’d bitten her?

She tried to pry herself from his grasp and shoved at him as his sharp teeth penetrated her skin. He began to suck slowly and she became filled with a great sense of nirvana, something hot and sweet flowing through her veins. She stopped resisting. It was almost like an exchange. Her blood for a powerful high she had no desire to stop. She relaxed in his arms, allowing him to suck. His intake grew stronger and stronger, and her legs gave out, but his strong arms held her up against the wall before she could fall. The narrow street behind him became distant, and she began to lose consciousness, or so she thought. Although she couldn’t move any part of her body, she heard him gasp after his teeth retracted from her skin.

“Oh, fuck!” His voice sounded panicky. Then she was in his arms as he carried her back inside the club and placed her body down on a cold floor in some room.

“What the fuck did you do?” another male voice similar to Lane’s barked.

“I…don’t know. I guess I took too much.” Lane lightly tapped Chelle’s cheek. “Wake up. Please. I didn’t mean to take so much. It’s just been so long since I fed, I got carried away. Damn it. I didn’t even need to compel her, she just accepted it all and gave herself to me without any struggle.”

From somewhere above, Chelle watched the two men, the body on the floor, her body, then her eyes took in her present state in bewilderment. Her spirit floated above as Lane frantically pressed on her corporeal chest to wake her up, but her body didn’t respond to his efforts. Her existence now just a transparent essence, a light beamed to her right. She wanted to go to it. The lure of it was so strong and peaceful.

“Let her go, Lane.”

“I can’t. I’m not a killer. I can’t just let her die.”

As the draw of the light urged her closer, she looked back at the shell she’d once inhabited on the floor. Lane scored his wrist with his fangs and shoved his arm against her lips. To her spirit, the light was strong, warm, comforting. Tranquility she’d only found in dreams. Pleasant dreams. But then something tugged at her.

Life.

There was still so much she wanted to do. So many things she hadn’t experienced, yet. The light would have to wait. She wanted to live.

Chapter One

Chelle

Eight Months Later

“Where are you going? Lane yelled at me over his shoulder.

I waved him off and headed down the alley in the opposite direction, but he was quick, and as I took my next step, I plowed right into him as he stood, blocking my way. His hands were on my shoulders, preventing me from moving. I could have just vanished from his grip, though I’d never wanted to. Until now. Something in me was changing. I wanted to be stronger, independent.

“I said, where are you going?” he repeated. His condescending tone made me flinch. I hated that he could do that to me, make me feel like a child with only a few words, but I was determined not to let him notice.

He smiled and skimmed the back of his finger down my cheek. He was gentle, and I hated it. I hated that he was so fucking gorgeous it made every inch of my skin tingle with desire. I hated him—for that and so much more.

I glanced up at the sky. There were no stars, not even the moon. The fog had rolled in about forty minutes ago, stealing the heavens from our view. Just another indication of how fucked up my life was. It was my twenty-first birthday. Or would have been. And we were out on a celebratory feed.

“I thought this was what you wanted, Chelle. To go out and get your own sustenance.”

“I do. But…”

“But what?”

“It’s not exactly on my own if you’re with me,” I managed, even though he had me under his control.

“But you’ve never done it alone before.” He brushed my short hair back away from my face. “I told you I wouldn’t interfere, that I’d let you do it all. I’ll just watch and make sure you don’t overindulge.”

He worried a lot about that. He knew firsthand how easy it was to lose control, and I could appreciate that, especially since I’d been the one he’d lost control with. But I was determined and stubborn.

“I don’t need a babysitter, Lane. I’ve got this. Just leave and let me do it. I promise I can handle it. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

He hung his head as if in defeat. “I can’t.”

“For fuck’s sake, Lane, I want to be alone. Can’t you understand that? Please, just go. I’ll meet you back at the club later and we’ll drink to my success and celebrate my birthday there.”

He sighed, then smiled. “All right. But if you’re not there in an hour, I won’t let you go out alone again for a long time.”

“Two hours,” I said. “Give me two.”

He shook his head. “One.”

“Two, please. Two.”

“What’s so fucking important that you need two hours?”

“Trust me this one time. Please.”

He gazed into my eyes, and I watched his silver-blue irises soften. He closed his lids, briefly, then took in a deep breath and nodded. “It’s against my better judgment, but okay, two hours. Happy birthday, Chelle,” he said and vanished into the darkness, leaving me alone at last.

I strolled down the narrow street behind a row of houses where Lane had left me. A man sat huddled against the building. A dirty vagrant. Since this was my first time alone, I wanted it to be memorable. I didn’t want just anyone, and I didn’t want an ugly old beggar. I wanted someone I could actually get off with.

I headed out of the alley and turned down El Camino Del Mar. Music floated out from a small bar across the street. A shiny, silver Harley was parked on the street just outside. Perfect. My nose twitched as the smell of stale cigarettes and Pine Sol assaulted my nostrils as I entered. San Francisco was a non-smoking city, but this was an older bar, and after years of seeping into the woodwork and fixtures, the fetid remnants of tobacco still infused the air. But the establishment itself was sort of swanky and upscale; much different from some of the dives down on Geary Avenue, where I’m sure I’d probably have better success. But it was my birthday, and I wanted nice. Not trashy.

My eyes settled on an attractive man playing pool. He wore a light blue shirt, untucked from his pants and unbuttoned at the collar. A silver tie patterned with little blue diamond shapes hung loosely around his neck. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. A relaxed, just-got-off-work look. He bent over and positioned his cue at the white ball, then glanced up at me with the most gorgeous blue eyes I’d ever seen. They were almost translucent. As difficult as it was, I quickly looked away. I was too hungry and too horny, and someone like that just might make me lose control, so I set my eyes on the other guy playing pool instead. A large man, sporting black leather. Biker gear. Perfect. This was what I was looking for tonight. His brown eyes locked on mine, and I smiled. Yeah, he would do. He would do nicely. He stood with a cue stick in his hand, rubbing the tip with a square of blue chalk, and he smiled at me as I sat down on a stool at the bar. I gave him my best sexy smile and held his gaze for a few seconds. He had a clean-shaven face, which surprised me considering the way he was dressed—jeans and a well-worn jacket with some club’s logo inscribed on the back. Maybe a weekend warrior. He was tall and muscled, and I didn’t think there would be much danger of me taking too much. He looked like he would give me just what I needed. The bike outside had to be his since he was the only guy in here dressed for the ride. The other guy playing pool was handsome beyond comprehension. Not more than Lane, but different, and though he would probably make for a tasty treat, there was something in my gut that told me no. I thought the biker dude would be exciting, and I had a feeling he’d take me for a great ride.

Hollywood’s focus rose to Chad’s eyes, and held. “I know what I want now.”

Unable to believe, hell, unable to think, under the force of that seductive green assault, Chad’s blood roared southward. He licked his lips. “And what’s that?”

The fire in Hollywood’s eyes flared, turning Chad’s blood into lava as he waited, feet on the edge of a cliff, for Hollywood’s response.

“You.”

Chad swayed. “Oh boy.”

Stepping back, Hollywood chuckled, clearly aware of his effect on Chad. “Get that look off your face. I’m keeping my hands to myself tonight.”

“All night?” The words barely out of his mouth, Chad winced at the disappointment in his voice. But, Jesus, he was disappointed. For months now—no, if he were being honest, it
had been years—he’d been dreaming of what it would be like to hold Hollywood, to kiss and touch him, to sink his cock between those muscled ass cheeks. Not that he expected to do all that tonight, or anytime soon, but something. Christ, he needed something.

Hollywood gently tapped his cheek and snorted. “At least until after dessert, Loverboy.”

Loverboy. Chad felt as though he’d entered some kind of twilight zone or an alternate universe where a determined, confident Hollywood said all the things Chad desperately wanted to hear. “Is that what I am to you?”

Hollywood brushed two fingers along the edge of Chad’s hairline and wiped away the beads of sweat popping out as Chad’s heart hammered faster and faster. “It’s what I’d like you to be.” He moved closer and, slipping his hands under Chad’s topcoat, pushed it off his shoulders.

Chad shuddered as the coat slid down his arms and dropped onto the carpeted floor with a muted thud. Taking a deep, calming breath, Chad leaned in so his chest was almost touching Hollywood’s. “Where is all this self-assurance coming from?”

He hoped like hell this new version of Hollywood stuck around, because this man was hot-as-fuck. Not only did Hollywood not take the expected step back, he took one forward, pressing their chests fully against each other. “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the past couple of days.”

“Oh, yeah? And?”

Hollywood grabbed Chad’s ass and ground against him. “And I’ve missed you.”

This is a scene during one of Hawk's hockey games and it s one of my favorites.

Home games were always more exciting as the crimson and gold colors dominated the stands. As I skated around the rink during warm-up, I couldn’t help but glance up at the seats behind our bench every time I skated by; still hoping to see Breena’s smiling face. But I knew better. I didn’t expect to see her there now. Not after all this time.

A quarter in to the third period, we were down one goal. I hadn’t been into the game at all. I’d even missed an easy shot on goal, and the puck had gone just right of the net. On top of that, I was doing horribly in the faceoff circle. The puck soared across the ice toward me. I tracked it this time. I wasn’t in the mood to play games, and I didn’t want to lose this one. It might be cheating, but I figured I’d just be making up for the crap way I’d played the first two periods. I owed my team my best. As I took control of the puck and headed down toward the opposing team’s goal, I got checked in the side and slammed into the boards with a jolt. The asswipe jammed his elbow into my lower back, causing me to become completely incapacitated for a few seconds, and forcing me to my knees. The ref hadn’t seen the elbow shot, so there was no penalty. I eyed the jerk, number four, and swore under my breath. As I skated toward the bench to take a sorely needed break, the coach saw me and sent in Dexter Green to take my place. That’s when I saw Breena sitting in the seat behind the bench. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of her. I was glad she was there. I was stupid to think I’d be able to go without seeing her again. I sent her a smile, and she gave me a timid smile back.

After my brief recuperation period, I went back into the game. A few minutes later, the ref blew his whistle for icing against the other team. That meant there would be a face-off. I skated to the spot on the ice where the referee held the puck. I had to face-off with the asswipe who’d elbowed me in the back, number four. Part of the fun of hockey was the violence, and learning to navigate through the complex systems and labyrinths of physical contact while still adhering to the code. An unwritten set of rules that had been handed down from generation to generation. The code picked up where the rule book left off.

With my stick down on the ice and ready, number four put his stick down. The puck fell, and I got to it, sending it over to Tex, who took it down the ice. I skated to the corner and Tex shot the puck over to me. Number four came at me again, his gloved hand on his stick right at the level of my balls. I pivoted to my right, and he got me in the hip. This time, I dropped my stick and slung out a punch. When a player challenges another, that player must answer the call and stand up for his team. Number four was doing his best to show me up. Fights can turn the tide of the game and create momentum. This fight would be more than just my retaliation, it
would also spark some energy for the team. Something we needed if we were going to win this game.

His first punch struck me on the left side of my jaw. Next thing I knew, our gloves were off and I’d sent out a punch to his face, my knuckles colliding with the side of his mouth. His helmet flew off. I took another punch to the face, which almost sent me to the ice as my own helmet rolled away, but I managed to stay up on my skates and got in a few more slugs before we were doing the fighter hug, my fist still pounding into his neck and chin. The battle was eventually stopped by the refs, and both number four and I headed to the penalty box. We each had five minutes to sit and brood. At least the teams were evenly numbered and there wouldn’t be any power play by the other team. I turned to glance at Breena. She looked worried. She needn’t worry about me, and I didn’t want her to worry, but it made me feel excellent that she might be concerned. It had been a hockey fight. Nothing more. It happened all the time. I sent her my best cocky grin, and she rolled her eyes.

The last few chapters are intense and they have been keeping me glued to my story. This book was supposed to be finished last month, but then I broke my leg. Ugh. The first couple of weeks I couldn’t write because of the pain meds messing with my head and making me extremely sleepy. Then finding a comfortable spot to sit and work was another problem. I’ve finally situated myself at the kitchen table, in a wheelchair with a pillow so I am tall enough to type without craning my neck. My leg is propped up on and resting on the leg holder of the wheelchair.

I don’t have a release date, yet. But I am planning a cover reveal in the next week, so stay tuned for that. I will announce the release date in the cover reveal and provide a pre-order link at that time.

February was a hard month for me. Breaking my leg the day after Valentine’s day was tough. The ski slope was not my friend that day.

It was a week before the Love and Fifty Author Signing in Sacramento and I didn’t think I was going to be able to make it. But my husband pulled through for me and offered to help. He pushed me around in my wheelchair and helped me set up and take down my table. He also volunteered to

take pictures of all the other 42 authors for the entire event. (Yes, there were supposed to be 50, but life happens sometimes at the last minute to change things) We managed to have a blast and I met some new authors and readers and saw some special friends. Here I am with some of my besties, Crazy Authors Anne Eliot, Ginger Scott, and Amber Garza. And the chick from Four Chicks Flippin Pages Review blog (awesome assistants) Kitty Love, Michelle Tan, and Neilliza Swaffar.

We had a blast.

“I’ll let you buy me that Irish Coffee you promised me now. I think my fingers are about to fall off they’re so cold,” I said.

“If I remember correctly, and I think I do, it was you who offered to buy me the coffee.”

I shrugged. “Yeah, but you have more money than I do.”

The coffee house was jam-packed with wall-to-wall people. It was Friday night, and the city was already booming with weekend tourists. We made our way to the counter after standing in line for about ten minutes, and Ash ordered two Irish Coffees, one heavy on the whipped cream; that was his. The more whipped cream, the better as far as he was concerned.

“Mmmm…” I hummed as the smooth, sweet cream mixed with the coffee and whiskey goodness warmed my throat. Ash laughed, and I frowned when I looked up at him as his finger swiped across the tip of my nose. He held up his whipped-cream-covered fingertip before sticking it in his mouth, sucking it dry. My stomach jittered then knotted. Wow. He was so sexy. I’d always thought so, but now, in this light, his green eyes twinkled and his tanned face made him look just like one of the cover model guys I drooled over in my escape world of reading romance novels. My heart thumped and I had to look away, trying to focus on something less…Asher.

I needed to concentrate on something real. Not that Ash wasn’t real. But, I mean, a real, possible relationship. The only problem was, most guys I knew were friends with Ash and always treated me as if I were one of the guys, just like Ash did.

I once overheard Asher tell Brent that he’d pummel the life out of any guy who ever tried to get into my pants. Not that getting into my pants was ever going to happen with any of those runts, but he did manage to scare the crap out of all of them whenever the subject of me came up. It used to make me feel good and special that he cared about me and wanted to protect me, but now that we were both into our twenties, I just wished he’d let up a bit. How would I ever find a boyfriend with Asher’s daunting threats forever fresh on every male’s mind this side of the bay bridge? You’d almost think that Ash wanted me for himself, but I knew that would never happen. His feelings for me were strong, as strong as mine for him, but his were more of a sister/brother pull that kept us close, not the physical attraction mine were.

“Hi, Ash,” Lisa Stone sidled up against Ash’s arm. “So sorry about your mom. Let me know if I can do anything for you, okay?”

“Thanks,” Ash responded and eyed me over the edge of his cup as he took a sip.

“Hi, Mel. Heard you two playing in the courtyard earlier. You are so good,” she said, placing her hand upon Ash’s shoulder. “When are you performing again at the Tank?”

“Tomorrow night,” Ash supplied.

“I’ll be there. See you then.” She turned and headed toward a table in the back where a small group of men and women were gathered.

I turned in the other direction, not wanting to watch Ash’s gaze follow Lisa’s rear end.

“What?” he said when he finally glanced back at me.

“Nothing,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Don’t give me that, ‘nothing,’ Mel. She’s nice.”

“Sure. Whatever you say.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing!”

“I know you better than you know yourself, Melody Grace Stevens, and when you say nothing and roll your eyes, there is definitely something.”

“Okay. It just seems like she’s throwing herself and her very large breasts at you all the time. It’s rather embarrassing how she comes across so needy.”

“Needy? I thought it was sexy.”

“You would. Look, I don’t care. It’s none of my business who with or where you get your jollies off.” If that’s the type of woman Ash was attracted to, no wonder he and I had never become anything more than friends.

I turned to see Alex walk through the door. Ash stiffened and sucked up the rest of his coffee. “Are you about finished?”

“No, what’s your hurry?” I asked, only halfway finished with my coffee.

I glanced back toward Alex. He wore a light grey denim shirt, the sleeves rolled up just below his elbows, showing off some cool tattoos on his forearms. The veins protruding as he reached up and swiped his hair off his forehead. He looked good. Really good. Almost as good as Ash. I quickly averted my eyes, not wanting him to know I’d been ogling him as he headed over toward us.

Ash knew Alex from way back in high school, but the few times I’d seen them both in the same room together, Ash always seemed a bit put off or uneasy.

“Hey, Melody. I’ve been looking for you,” Alex said, putting his arm around my shoulder when he reached us. Ash looked on, frowning.

“I’m right here,” I said with a slight giggle.

“I have two tickets to see Maroon Five at the Shoreline next Friday night. Wanna go?”

“Okay. Sure,” I said, sucking in my bottom lip, dying inside with excitement at the prospect of a real date with a real guy. I mean someone other than Asher Beaumont. Ash and I went everywhere together, so they never seemed like dates. And they weren’t, of course.

I stood at the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. The city was beautiful this time of the morning, a couple of hours before sunrise. I’d been resolute in my control to not stalk Magdalena. However, my self-control was slipping, and I knew it was only a matter of time before I would lose the battle. Standing here at the top of the bridge with her bedroom window in my sights wasn’t helping.

I ached to see her, to touch her, to inhale her sweet, delicious scent. Tomorrow night couldn’t come soon enough.

The next thing I knew, I was standing outside her window, watching her sleep. I’d heard rumors of vampires meeting their soulmates. Someone whose scent drove them insane, so crazy that they couldn’t stay away from them no matter how hard they tried. Causing them to do things they wouldn’t normally do. In all my two hundred years, I’d never believed the stories. But now. I wasn’t so sure. Because whatever it was that lured me to her window—to her—was so strong I was powerless to fight it. I wondered if she felt the same.

She stirred slightly and I panicked, not sure if I should dematerialize or just stay still. I opted for the latter, mostly because I was frozen in fear that she would discover what a sick pervert I was. I hoped if I simply stayed still, she wouldn’t wake.

I was an intemperate imbecile to think I could stay away. I watched as she sighed heavily in her sleep. I wanted to stroke my fingers through the beautiful dark curls splaying across her pillow and brush the stray strands away from her bosom so I could feast upon her silky flesh. She was magnificent. There wasn’t another creature in the entire world so beautiful. It stole my breath to be so close to her.

I glanced around her room, wanting to take in as much of her surroundings as I could, to learn her likes and habits. The roses I’d sent sat on a desk next to a closed laptop. I knew there were many things I could learn about her from that laptop. That would be too much of a violation, though. Vampire or not, I did possess a few moral principles.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Not a thing.” Then he reached out and took my hand in his, turning it over, revealing my palm. He held my hand, gently tracing his finger over the top line.

“You have a very warm heart, Magdalena.”

“You’re reading my palm?”

“This is known, not only from looking at your palm but also in here.” He placed his other hand over my left breast, and I couldn’t breathe. He left it there for a few seconds as he gazed into my eyes and then removed it, focusing his attention back to my palm. “You have had many periods of sadness and sorrow in love. I am sorry for that.”

I gave him a timid smile, thinking of my parents, not to mention that I’d just broken up with Kellen and he knew it. “I don’t believe in fortune telling.”

“You don’t?”

“No.”

He ignored my negativity on the subject and continued to softly skim the lines on my hand. I thought of the psychic reader, Tessa, who Vanessa and I had gone to see right before going to the club. She’d said I’d fall…”Oh, crap,” I said out loud.

“Is everything okay?” Cian asked.

“Yes. Everything is fine.” I didn’t want to tell Cian what Tessa had told me about falling under temptation, because I had a sneaky suspicion that he was the temptation I was about to fall into. I couldn’t help think about the “meeting someone dark” part of that reading, though. Cian was not dark. In fact, his skin was very fair.

He continued to trace his finger very delicately down the center line of my palm, all the way to my wrist and slowly back up the middle, stopping at the point where my pulse beat. He drew tiny circles around my vein, sending shivers up my spine. I felt my heart thump in my chest, and he looked up at me and smiled.

“You’re nervous,” he said.

I bit my bottom lip. God, yes, I was. But I didn’t say anything, only watched his finger circle around as my stomach fluttered with desire for him.

Crouching low, Mira pulled the sword up over her head, and quickly swiped down in a sharp arc. Instantly at one with her weapon, she began the training dance, moving fluidly forward in a deadly ballet with her invisible opponent. Spinning and twirling while slashing the air with her blade she hardly noticed the other presence in the room. It was only when her sword met with resistance and the loud clang of metal on metal, brought her back to reality that she saw who was there.

“Careful, princess, might take someone’s head off,” Justine smirked. Her own twin blades at the ready, she stepped back and fell into a fighting stance.

Last time Mira had come up against Justine, she’d been unskilled, weak, and defenseless. She was none of those things now.

“Are we doing this?” She smirked, happy to have an opponent worthy of sparring with.

“You made the challenge. So, bring it.”

That she had. Back in the council chamber. And though her anger had cooled since then, she was ready and willing to prove herself. Mira rotated the sword in her hand a few times to loosen up her wrist and without warning brought the blade up hard at Justine.

Twin daggers ready, Justine met the incoming sword with both her blades, crossing them as she pulled back quickly. “Oh you are aiming to kill, aren’t you? What’s got you all riled up?”

“You know very well.” Mira spun on her heel and used the momentum to slash at Justine as she came around. “The futility of our situation.”

“Oh yeah, we’re fucked.” Tip of the sword barely missing Justine’s face, she deflected with the dagger in her right hand. “But you didn’t have to take a human’s side.”

“It’s not taking sides to recognize reason.”

“Humans are never reasonable.”

“I’m going to choose to ignore that.”

“You’re ignoring a lot these days.” It was Justine’s turn to advance, taking advantage of Mira’s wide swings she closed in and jammed her blade in Mira’s side. “Don’t forget what they did to us.”

Hissing in pain, Mira brought the pommel of her sword down against Justine’s head and shoved her back.

The blade hurt just as much going out as it had going in. Mira clutched her wounded side as she eyed Justine licking the blood from her dagger and reset into a fighting stance.

“I have not forgotten the bad or the good.” Mira lunged forward. The tip of her blade made contact, but Justine did not cry out in pain. She leaned away and deflected the blade with her daggers. It might not have gone deep, but Mira saw blood. She smiled at her small accomplishment.

“It’s only a scratch.” Justine huffed, looking at the wound already beginning to heal. “Don’t get cocky.”

“You want more?” Mira taunted.

“Can you do more? Where is this great warrior everyone talks about?”

It shouldn’t have bothered her, but Mira had her reputation for a reason, and hearing those words compounded the rage boiling inside her. She attacked with a fury reserved normally for those who were going to die. Had she been fighting anyone but Justine, they might have. Speed of lightning, Mira moved with deadly precision bringing the sword down and around Justine’s head as if she meant to take it off. Only fast reflexes and sixty years of gladiator battles had given Justine the skills to avoid decapitation.

“You know what your problem is?” Justine taunted, twisting her blades around in her hands and bouncing on the balls of her feet.

Mira reset, watching her opponent, anticipating the attack that would come. “Enlighten me?”

Justine ducked low and swiped at Mira’s stomach. The blade failed to meet its mark by scant inches. “You’re a great big baby.”

“Funny.”

Justine deflected Mira’s responding swipe of the sword and reset again for her next attack. “It wasn’t a joke.”

“Did you come here just to piss me off?”

“I came to see if it was worth sticking around.”

“What?”

“You know, when I saw you, the great savior, as I entered New Haven, I was proud. I remembered that weak, pathetic little girl running away from mommy and daddy. She never should have survived.”

“But I did.”

“Yes… but how? Because this person I see here, she’s not a survivor. She’s still that weak little girl.”

“I’ll show you weak.” She backed Justine almost to the edge of the arena with a fury of wild swings.

“Oh, so you do have some balls.” Having hit the far wall, Justine ducked and pivoted around Mira’s blade coming out behind her and sliding her knife around to Mira’s neck. She whispered in her ear. “C’mon then, warrior. Fight back like you mean it.”

Justine wasn’t looking for a sparring match, it seemed all she cared to do this evening was piss Mira off, and she’d done just that. “I’m tired. We’re done here.”

Justine laughed. “Tired? Tired? You’re tired? For sixty years I’ve done one thing. The one thing I told you to do. You’re tired. Then go off and die, because you don’t deserve to survive.”

“I did not earn my reputation for nothing.”

“But you’re still not the true warrior I’d expected.”

Mira took in a deep breath, feeling the edge of the blade against her throat. “Sorry to disappoint.”

“How can you be so pathetic?” Justine released Mira with a shove.

“Excuse me?”

“You have it all, princess. You’re the savior. You’ve got adoring fans, freedom, and the love of a very hot wolfman, and still you’re moping about. Oh poor you.”

“You call worrying over the survival of the people I just freed, moping?”

“Yeah, because your pissing time away in meetings instead of just fixing the problem. You know as well as I do that the only way to kill a beast is to cut off the head.”

“It’s not as simple as that. Or were you not paying attention in the meeting?”

“Yeah. I heard a lot of whining and crying over people who might die. Just fucking do something.”

“I can’t risk the lives of innocents.”

“You’re already doing it by doing nothing. Get out there and fix it.”

Justine, as usual had hit the root of the problem. But it was precisely that which had them all stalled in committee.”

“You’ve got problems. We’ve all got problems. Everyone wants to live their happy little life, but right now, it’s not an option. Suck it up, princess. Do something about it.”

“I am doing something.” What more did she expect? Mira had said her peace in the meetings and had been overshadowed by Lucian and Stryker’s plan. All she could do was hold tight.

“No, you’re wasting time waiting for others to do things. Story of your life. You want to be this independent person, in control, and all the while, you’re letting others decide what happens in your life. I’ll bet you haven’t even taken that wolf of yours to bed. You’re waiting until he forces you past your extremely obvious intimacy issues.”

“That’s none of your concern.” She was dangerously close to crossing the line. Mira tightened her grip on the sword.

“Or how about the human who’s pining away for you.”

“Again, none of your concern,” Mira’s voice became dangerously quiet. She was moments from losing her patience.

“We’ll if you won’t take him, I will.”

“Have the human.” That will be the day!

“And the wolf too. I’d give him more than enough reason to leave your crybaby ass behind.”

“You go too far.”

Justine threw the dagger in her left hand, burring it deep into Mira’s chest. “So teach me a lesson, great warrior.”

Mira fell to her knees with a groan. Pawing at her chest to remove the blade.

“How ever did you survive?” Justine spat at Mira. “Maybe I’ll just take that wolfman as my prize for killing you.”

I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I have cut firewood on shares and worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie.

My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in-laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word.

We moved to Wasilla to get warm. It barely drops past -25 degrees here in the winter. I became a paralegal and worked for over 26 years for the same firm. Thousands of documents I have written have been before various judges all over the state.

Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much I’d never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. I lost my first husband to alcohol. My second husband, the love of my life, died as a result of disease. We were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan.

It is with a great amount of excitement that I am finally sharing this cover with you. Can you believe it? I've been writing paranormal romance since 2007, but this is my very first vampire book. And also the first in a new series, Immortal Hearts of San Francisco. There are many more stories in my head about these Immortal Hearts and Tempted by a Vampire, though a stand-alone book, is only the beginning.
