DIY Spring Umbrella Door Hanger

About a month into finding Pinterest, I pinned an umbrella ~~wreath~~ hanger.

I thought about it often. Too often.

I obsessed about wanting one but thought it would be too hard to make.

I caved.

My Mom has been here this week so I had the joys of shopping with her.

I love you MOM!

What you will need is one umbrella, a handful of tulips, fern, grass and nest.

I first tied a ribbon around the center of my umbrella.

This also allowed me to just pick and stick my flowers.

No foam. No gluing.

Just pick and stick!

I like to hang my wreath on my door and work from there.

I'm sure I keep the neighbors entertained...ha.

The tulips have wire stems so you can just bend where needed.

I never spend more than 30 minutes making a wreath.

I find if you just pick and stick you won't fall prey to "is it good enough?"

I like the natural look.

I also love the fact that I can reuse everything.

I wired the nest in so it's good and snug and reusable.

I had someone ask me why I never used hot glue.

I live in the deep south so glue does not work well outdoors. melts in 3.4 seconds

The flowers came from Michael's and the umbrella Hobby Lobby.

The nest was something I have had around for years.

You may have to bend your umbrella wires a bit.

I bent the front 3.

In the past, I have always made a wreath for each door.

This year I decided to go solo.

Although both doors can open, we only use one.

So I placed a tiny nail in the middle frame.

This part stays stationary so it worked perfect for the wreath.

This umbrella is a "jumbo" size.

For a single door you may need to use a regular size umbrella.

At Hobby Lobby they have many spring colors to choose from. love em all!

I know it's not quite spring yet but our weather here didn't get the memo. Ha!

What better way to coax Maddy into reading!

A new light!

She spotted this swing-arm wall sconce at Home Depot.

My first thought was "electric woes".

I am no "Get er done" when it comes to electricity.

But then I noticed something ...

No skills needed!

You just plug that baby up!

Oh the cute ways you could jazz these up!

I think for now we will stick with the plain white.

Is it me or are they making these swing arms so much nicer these days?

Love this wall!!!

And this one...oh my!

And just for a funny...LOL

So now Maddy has a new swing-arm lamp and a cute new book to read.

It's raining cupcakes!

That's the name of the book ;)

She joined a book club at school and we are enjoying this book together.

One happy Mom here :)

Ruffles in lime

Maddy's new chair was just begging for some ruffles and fluff...ha!

You may remember when I shared my ruffle pillow DIY here.

I just removed the pink fluff and reused her pillow.

I cut strips about 3" in width using the entire length of the fabric.

Or would that be width?

Anyway...I bought a 1/2 yard of fabric and cut it into 3" strips. ;)

Now that I have confused y'all including myself.. good gravy!

I gathered the strips and did a single stitch right down the center.

I didn't worry with the edges...

We like the frayed look.

This go around I left the center of the pillow plain.

I liked the look of the white showing.

This project took maybe 45 minutes and was fun to boot!

For her bed...

I started with a place mat that coordinated with her chair.

My sister shares the DIY here.

Not only are we adding color this go around....texture is a must!

Nothing like a fur pillow to jazz up a space.

Fur pillow is from Target.

Blue silk and place mat pillow from World Market.

A girl and her room can never have too many pillows ;)

Decorate in a day!

Yes. You. Can!

First Madison and I started off with finding our focal point.

In her bedroom we knew it would be a reading chair.

We are limited on space so it had to be functional and fit.

We found her at World Market!

She is the Feather Print Lydia Dining chair and oh so soft.

The legs are a deep espresso so that's a perfect match with her book shelf.

And who could pass up these nail heads?

I think not. :)

Here now is our palette full of fun colors.

We then shopped the store and found almost everything we needed.

I was loving it!

We jumped ahead a bit and cheated on Friday.

We painted the room before our colors were picked out.

I knew I wanted to go with something that flowed with the rest of our house.

Maddy picked Romantic Overcast from Wal Mart.

It worked out just perfect.

Step two...to be cont.

The 70's are callin'

The 70's are calling.

They want their bed back! LOL

Last weekend Jesse, our oldest, moved out.

He makes this our second child to leave the nest.

It's Hard.

So after a week of letting it settle in that I now only have one child left at home...

I began operation take down.

He went from the crib straight to a water bed.

No worries though, this kid never slept.

Never.

I tried every book on the market...nada.

Fast forward 21 years and he is now living on river front property.

Thanks Dad.

So I'm left with a 70's water bed... ha!

Guess who is moving into his room?

yep.

Guess what I'm doing this weekend?

yep.

to be continued...

PS.. hang on to those babies and love em' even the non sleepers.

Before you know it...Bam!

Your house is almost empty.

Fashionably Feathered

I had my eye on these two for quite some time.

Not only did I want to bring some "life" to my studio, they matched! LOL

Gracie is the yellow one.

Ruby is the blue one.

I was so excited to finally put my vintage bird cage to use.

I bought it a couple years back in Round Top Texas.

We found the cage first then happened upon this awesome stand just a few booths away.

Double score!

It still had the original bell....so sweet!

And just enough vintage rust ;)

The stand has a heavy base so no fear of Heidi knocking it over.

Not that she would.

She weighs only 3 lbs..ha!

Maddy took them out of their box and introduced them to their new place.

I have a fear of touching birds. Thank you Maddy!

For the longest they both just sat at the bottom. scared. to. death

It wasn't long after that Gracie started to explore.

Poor Ruby waited...at the bottom.

I think Gracie is going to be full of personality! LOL

She started ~~performing~~ showing off and we loved it!

With much coaxing, Gracie did it!

She convinced Ruby that all was well with their new place.

Although apprehensive a tad, Ruby gave in.

And it wasn't long before she was once again full of snuggles.

I think I'm really going to enjoy these two!

Fun Fabric

Finally!

They. Are. Finished....well almost.

I found this awesome fabric at my favorite shop.

PTree Textiles in Baton Rouge.

It had just the right colors I was looking for.

I won't share a DIY because quite frankly, I can't sew a lick.

My sister was blessed with those talents.

Hurry though!

The fabric is called "Savannah" from Covington Fabric and design

I bought about three yards and just cut it right down the center.

It's decorator fabric so it runs wider than your average fabric.

I then lined it with some 3.00 fabric from Wal Mart.

It really helps cut down the glare.

Now I just have to hem soon...not holding my breath. lol

I recieved many emails asking about my chair.

It belonged to my Maw Maw and was passed down to me.

I never thought I would be able to work that funky green into my decor. Ha!

And to believe I wanted to just give her away.

In fact, I did!

I gave her to my sister.

You think maybe she will forget?

Gosh I hope so!

She just fits now.

Funky green and all~

I have a few more touches to add to this room and then I'm moving on.

A new room awaits.

So much more to tell you.

What girl can resist a monogram?

I love em!

You can only imagine my excitement when my sister Missy made this for me.

It's a shoe tote.

I guess she got tired of watching me stuff all of my goodies in a plastic bag...ha!

She even made this zipper bag to match.

I'm feeling the love here.

She just opened a brand spankin' new shop.

Oh my word...her stuff is CUTE!

I'm not just saying this cause she's my sister and I love her to bits.

Nope.

It's really cute!

She takes so much pride in her work and OH. THE. DETAILS!

Nothing would make my heart smile more than if you would visit her lil shop.

DIY with Martha Stewart & Home Depot

Remember when I shared my closet office redo here?

I had the wall finished but needed a desk.

Of course I wanted to cut cost and shop the house.

And I knew just who to turn to.

Martha Stewart!

Home Depot and I have teamed up to do some projects using their

Martha Stewart Small Project Paints. love them!

Now that I had the paint, I needed the desk.

One U.G.L.Y desk

I did a light sanding and used the Polished Silver.

Here she is after one coat.

The look I want for my office is a gumbo of styles.

A little vintage. A little cottage. A little modern.

I think the desk will take me there.

It has the look of stainless but not cold and untouchable...if that makes sence?

I added a little hardware using a polished nickel.

Perfect!

Martha and Home Depot helped me knock this project out of the park!

Now if only Martha could swing by and sew up my curtains...

That would be great! lol

At the tender age of 3, we enrolled Madison in dance.

It was my idea.

What Mom can resist the thought of their little girl becoming a ballerina?

Dancing lasted about 4 years.

She then tried her hand at music theatre.

Gymnastics and cheer leading.

She is currently taking voice lessons and loves it....BUT

when passion burns deep.. Yeah

Just look at that smile!

Her passion is English Riding.

No tu tu's. No stage.

Just her and a horse.

After my Daddy surprised her this summer with a private lesson.

Hooked!

So today she spent 9 hours on a horse. ouch.

She found her passion.

And made a few new friends along the way.

I'm new to English Riding, as is she, but you would never know it.

I guess when you find your place, it just fits.

Oh, I don't know how long this love affair will last...

I just know lessons are less expensive than a Thoroughbred.

And I know this little girl will sleep good tonight...lol

Although he is cute.

To be honest, I'm deathly afraid of horses.

Our Get Away Weekend!

Where else can you watch 5 episodes of Pioneer Woman in a row?

At the Deer Camp of course.

My sister Missy and her husband own 65 acres in Mississippi.

They call it the "little house in the big woods"

Last night I spent 2 1/2 hrs in this deer stand.

(I think it needed a little paint inside and some heat would have been nice) Ha!

This was my view!

Heidi and I didn't see a thing.

That's OK though.

We didn't bring a gun, just our camera.

After my walk back, I was served Homemade chicken soup. YUM!

I won't tell you how many pieces I had...nope.

I mean...could you pass up 6 pieces of layered heaven?

We then watched the Saints :( and Miss America.

Woke to this..

Maddy and her friend Emily searched for phone service...ha!

After breakfast we took a little ride through the woods.

I think Heidi likes it about as much as I do!

Their property is next to a National Forest.

No worries about pesky neighbors ;)

Brett and Missy shared with us some of their big plans ahead.

This frame is soon to become a guest cottage.

Yay me!

This will be the front porch view.

I think Heidi likes it too!

I can't tell you how much I needed to get away.

Nothing like nature to calm your soul.

Funny how 3 little words can spark your interest like no other.

A closet makeover

I knew I would never be able to hold out...ha!

At least I can show y'all the top half.

It's what I have finished so far.

Lets step back in time shall we.

Nothing like ripping out closet shelves only to leave holes.

The size of NEVADA! ouch

Marc shared his concern on this matter and I fixed it.

Nothing a little wallpaper wont cover.

This is the neatest paper ever!

I then finished it off with a little trim.

I knew I didn't want many shelves.

Why?

Because they collect clutter and I always fall victim. every time

So limiting my shelves ...limits my clutter.

Maybe I can be passed up by hoarders this season. fingers crossed

I found these neat brackets at Lowes.

2 for under 10 ;)

Now here's where the fun enters the stage.

Cue the family pictures that have been stored forever.

I wanted to surround myself with family.

At first I started to update the photo's then changed my mind.

It's like going down memory lane every day.

Now no Southern girls office is complete without a monogram.

I have wimped out every time.

Fear of postage kept me fenced in.

I also didn't want to confuse everyone out there.

I jumped the fence!

I painted a larger one just to get an idea of pricing.

The original is 24" x 24" (shown on the left)

The larger is 36" x 36" (shown on the right) HUGE!

It's a New Year!

A time for new beginnings and fresh starts.

Thank you Lord for new beginnings.

This year I'm getting out of my safe zone.

Decorating and colors that is.

Here are a just a few things I will add to my office/workspace.

Yes, I'm already hyperventilating just looking at the colors. Ha!

Speaking of colors, I have teamed up with Martha and Home Depot.

I have a new playground of paint!

I can't wait to share some fun new projects soon.

Here is just a smidge of what I'm working on now.

The one where my husband held his breath while I ripped the doors off and yanked the shelves out of.

He's a good man.

Just held his breath.

I won't lie. I did too.

I have to make this one good.

Nothing like making my Man proud ;)

(Insert Tim the Tool man grunts).

Today marks my 4th year blogging!

Yikes!

I just can't believe it has been 4 awesome years.

It's so much fun to look back and reflect.

These were so much fun to make!

Now the molding DIY...not so much fun.

But oh so worth it!

This was by far the hardest project of the year but one of the most rewarding.

Maddy's room is always a fun place to decorate.

She is always so willing ;)

Her DIY pillows are still one of my favorites.

Not to mention her Trumeau Mirror.

You can make one of these in just hours for very little moola!

What a difference a storage bed can make!

Maddy's room is very limited for space and using this DIY bed made a world of a difference.

Now if I could just keep those baskets junk free...ha!

Ever wanted a bench for the foot of your bed?

Here is our very easy DIY!

With a yard of fabric you can change the look in just minutes.

I think this was one of those "make your hunny happy" DIY's

I didn't want a fan...He did!

Lets just say this was our win win DIY for the year ;)

Yes...you can paint a ceiling fan.

Cajun Night Before Christmas!

This morning we headed out to River Road.

We had beignets and coco at our favorite lil shop.

Houmas House is featured above.

It's one of the plantation homes along the River Road

Ohhh soo yummy!

Oh the excitement...ha!

Below is a shot of the little coffee house.

Next door they have the sweetest little shops.

Inside one of them had two of my favorite books.

I can remember reading this one to my baby dolls...

In a Cajun accent of course ;)

This books just plain makes me laugh.

It's so true here.

Another shot of Houmas House all decorated for the Christmas season.

Beautiful!

One of our traditions here is the bonfires on the levee.

The levee is this dirt wall to hold back the Mississippi when it spills over.

The bonfires are built to light the bayou for Papa Noel.

This way he can see to deliver all the goodies ;)

Most of the bonfires are built in the traditional fashion but some sport neat themes.

A little cabin like this one above was built in memory of a lost loved one.

It looks like it may rain tonight so many were preparing theirs with diesel and paper.

This one was built to replicate an air boat.

A 4x4 truck here.

They don't look all that big but trust me...

some of these are many stories high!

It never gets old riding down the road to a view like this.

Oh the anticipation of tonight!

As soon as the sun sets the signal is given and all the bonfires are lit.

The homes on the opposite side of the road were already lined with families.

Gumbo pots over burners were getting a head start.

And finally...

This stop always make my Christmas Eve drive complete.

Below is the Manresa House of Retreat.

It was once a school that my Grandpa attended.

HUGE!

Every year they set out the manger and it is just perfect.

They are all life size and it just takes my breath away.

New kids on the block!

Allow me to introduce the new kids on the block.

My kids ranging in age from 21 to 11 seem to like em!

Maybe it's because they swivel ;)

All three kids put them to the spin test. lol

I love their aged sleekness and butcher block style seat.

They remind Kaylee of a mad scientist lab chair.

You would know her major is in Biology....so fitting ..Hahaha

I also love the fact that they don't have a back to them.

This opens the space a lot believe it or not.

So where did these beauties come from?

It was my birthday on the 17th so I went shopping!

It was white with a blue ceiling.

Cons... Our white molding did not pop.

Pros...My painted signs did.

So I got Madison off to school and started with my blue ceiling first.

I went back with your basic ceiling white.

Then I noticed that it was too much white!

So I conquered the wall next...

Eleven straight hours of painting and two advils later..

My molding pops!

My plates shine..

My camera blurred..ha!

Am I happy?
