It has been a while I wrote a blog.

I am already preparing my next show in November in the Toko Gallery in Mashiko. I had a show there also in 2007 and they show continually work from me. My theme for the show is: “Wings: Love is a bird, it needs to fly”.

So, I am doing some horsehair ceramics and sculptural works. Quite challenging.

We enjoy living near the sea and go often for a swim. The water is warm and quite clear. During the day, when it is nice weather, it is simmering hot and humid, but luckily in the evening we have a nice breeze. Sometimes it storms and rains, because of a faraway typhoon.
In my outside workshop I have a big fan and exhaust, which fans out the hot air especially when I fire a kiln. I glaze my ware early in the morning, because after the noon hour it is too hot.

Last week, I was sick, so, you take it slow and everything is too much. But luckily I am better again.
Today, I first went out for a cup of coffee and read Bill Geisinger’s book about Potters in Japan. Very interesting and enjoyable especially when you recognize potters, methods and work.
Then I biked to the Hachimangu shrine with the big pond, which was filled with the Lotus flowers. What a sight! I sat down under the shade of a Wisteria patch, felt the breeze on my face, saw dragonflies and a butterfly, a little bird on a big Lotus leaf and pigeons and the beautiful pink and white Lotus flowers.

I returned to my comfortable house and thought how lucky I am that I can live this life, thinking about the millions of people suffering from floods, landslides, illnesses, fires, hurricanes and earthquakes. I am really thankful.

- Yixing Ceramic Museum:
Today, I received the news from Guangzhen “Po” Zhou, that my Kamakura Red Teapot is received by the Yixing Ceramics Museum and permanently accepted in their special exhibition hall for international teapots! This is wonderful. Unfortunately, I could not be there. But I saw the museum last April. The Yixing Ceramic Museum is the first one established in China and has an abundant collection of exhibits. See my blog of May 5, 2010.

- The Shanghai “Pot” Museum:
Another Kamakura Red Teapot was exhibited during the Shanghai exhibition, last April and will be in the permanent collection of the Shanghai “Pot Musuem”. See my blog of May 5, 2010.

- The Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum:
Last year, “Po” Zhou brought my Kamakura Red “Peony” Vase to Jingdezhen for the 2009 International Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition. Afterward, the vase was accepted in the permanent collection of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum. Jingdezhen is known as the “Porcelain Capital”, because it has been producing quality porcelain pottery for 1700 years. See my blog of November 28, 2009.

It all started when Guangzhen “Po” Zhou chose my “Kamakura Red Teapot” for the “International Contemporary Teapot Exhibition with the title: “Beyond the function” in conjunction with the NCECA conference in April 2009. See my blog of January 14, 2009.

Then he made a poster of “100 Contemporary Teapots of West” selected from 6 exhibitions and my teapot is one of them. See my blog of April 13, 2009.

After that in July 2009, “Po” Zhou brought my “Peony Vase” to Jingdezhen and also my teapot to Yixing.
Thank you so much, “Po” Zhou!

Please, look on his website and read all about the trip he organized in China and all his accomplishments and beautiful artwork: www.chineseclayart.com

I made some Kamakura Red big vases for an order.

It was a challenge, because to throw the vase in one time with the clay I use is very difficult. So, it threw it in two and three parts and then when the clay was firmed up, you put the parts together.

After that, I continued shaping the form. And then I made my alterations when the clay was still soft leather hard.

I trimmed the foot after having it dried to a hard leather hard stage. It was possible to dry the vases in the open air (with no draft), because the temperature in Japan at the moment is hot and humid. So, it dries slowly.

After a slow bisque firing, I sprayed the glaze on the pot and then glaze-fired to cone 06 (1770 F/995 C).

I put the pot on stilts with metal points. I don’t have other ones. All-ceramic stilts, including the “points,” are preferable to metal-point stilts for heavier forms, because the ceramic “points” will not bend under extra weight. And so, this is exactly what happened. The points bent and the bigger vase didn’t fall against the wall, but against the other big vase! So, both were stuck together!! This was very, very unfortunate, because the color was exactly right.
I put them back into the kiln in a way so the big vase could fall back on the stilt when the glaze was melted enough. This was at 1500 F. The big one cracked “pang” when I opened the kiln, because of the thermal shock effect. The cold air going over the bigger vase was too much when I steadied it.

I had them cool down, but then I got my old problem with this glaze: the formation of craters. Sometimes they may be used to achieve textural emphasis on ware. Such glazes are usually produced by glaze compositi ons which liberate a gas during firing. As the gas bubbles reach the surface of the glaze, they may either break through to leave craters in the surface coating, or they may be trapped in the form of blisters. I don’t want those craters. I want a smooth red surface and for me it is a defect. A horizontal form, like a plate, is correctable, but a vertical shape is almost impossible, because the glaze flows down. The second time the craters were less and I tried a third time, but by now the red color had almost burnt out and disappeared and I had more craters!
A real bummer. It was an expensive lesson to learn by not using the right stilts.

On May 21, 2010, I gave a lecture at the Kamakura YMCA . This is an English Seminar. It is a group of people who is interested in continuing their knowledge of the English language. Almost everybody lived abroad for a while in an English speaking country of the world. They invite English speaking people to talk about a special topic. I got invited and made a Powerpoint presentation and brought some of my work: especially the Kamakura Red work of course here in Kamakura.
On the 28th we first went to Ge Jun Pottery Arts Center. Mr. Ge Jun is a researcher and the director of the Yixing Ceramic Research Center of Chinese Culture, especially for the Purple Teapot. He was one of the sponsors of the event. All our teapots were exhibited in his Arts Center. The exhibition holds pots from 100 potters from 100 countries of five continents around the world. It is impossible to show all the pots on my blog. They published a catalogue and I will show you just a few.
Next day we went on a bus all the way to Yixing city. We started to get to know each other better, had some interesting discussions and sang songs together. Watch the YOU TUBE movie.
Yixing is China’s pottery capital. The Yixing clay dates back to the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279) when purple clay was first mined around Lake Taihu in China. The finished stoneware, which is used for teaware and other small items, are usually red or brown in color. The clays are very cohesive and can be formed by slip molding, coil forming, or most commonly, slab forming. They are known as Purple Sand ware, and are typically unglazed. The most famous wares made for Yixing clay are the teapots.

First, we went to the China Ceramic Cultural Institute, Research Center for Purple Culture of the purple teapot. It was interesting with some beautiful work. We went to a factory and saw students working on their teapots.

Next, we saw the “Qianshu Dragon Kiln” in Qianshu village, Dingshu town, a state protected historic town. It is 43.3 meters long, 1.55 meters high, 3 meters wide outside and 2.3 meters wide inside. The kiln was built in the Ming Dynasty (1400 AD) and is being used since then. Coal is the most common fuel being used for firing this kiln.

After that we investigated a four-story building what will become the new “Pot” Museum. Ge Jun had put a lot of his sculptures and from his students on the first floor. Quite interesting.

The last outing for the day was the Yixing Ceramics Museum. It is the first ceramic museum established in China and has an abundant collection of exhibits. Fully revealing Yixing’s long history of pottery production and splendid pottery culture for more then 7000 years from the middle of Neolithic Age up to the present time.

A Celadon Vase. The production of Celadon in Yixing began in the West Zhou Dynasty 11 Centuries BC. The textures of Yixing Celadons is fine, its glaze is crystal clear like ice and green with blue tint like jade. Their shapes are elegant and the decoration is grand.

The last day, we first went to the Shanghai Museum with some beautiful nice and interesting arts.

Then we went to the Bund of Shanghai, an old part of the city with wonderful old architecture and their famous roof architecture and of course now many shops and eateries for tourists. Also, some performers like on the YOU TUBE movie.
