class="meta"></p> <p>Feeling under-dressed?</p> <p>This is how I felt back in 2008 when I tried to convince the hospital I worked for at the time to put social media on the priority list. I was convinced we were already too late. No one else was concerned, and the hospital still runs just fine today. (They now have a Facebook page and Twitter feed.)</p> <p>I felt this way again in 2010 when I set out to plan a marketing class for impressionable Idaho State juniors and seniors. There was way to much to tell them about social media, and I didn&rsquo;t know the half of it.</p> <p>I feel the same way today in 2011. Too late. The deluge of social media and Internet marketing information coming out of the social media agencies, blogs, vendors, researchers, and consultants is intense. Not only are you late for the party, but now you look like you&rsquo;ve been drinking from a fire hose.</p> <p>Don&rsquo;t panic.</p> <p>Turns out, everyone is always is late for the party. But that&rsquo;s the great democracy of social media. If everyone is late, then it isn&rsquo;t a bad thing, and new people are coming in the door long after you arrived.</p> <p>If you feel late:</p> <ol> <li>Find someone who got there before you </li> <li>Learn where your kind hang out </li> <li>Be friendly </li> <li>Gather some information</li> <li>Start your own conversation</li> </ol> <p>Can we ever catch up and &ldquo;master&rdquo; social media? class="meta"></p> <p>I was flitting around in Twitter the other day when I saw this post: &ldquo;Want the killer productivity tool? This is really the only one you need,&rdquo; from Amber Naslund (co-author of The Now Revolution - <a href="http://www.twitter.com/ambercadabra" target="_blank">find her on Twitter</a>). I respect this woman and was frankly taken in by her hard-sell post. Of course I wanted the new killer productivity tool.</p> <p>I was fully expecting the link to take me to the latest online, free-trial, solve-all-your-problems, business application website. Instead it went to a blog post about using, of all things, a pencil and a piece of paper.</p> <p>The blog post suggested writing down the six most important tasks each night before leaving work and then doing nothing else the next day until the six tasks are complete. After reading this, I felt like I just had an Irish Spring-style shower in the forest: refreshed.</p> <p>I hadn&rsquo;t realized how accustomed I had become to linking productivity to my computer and all the apps, dashboards, emails, tweets, and posts I contend with every day.</p> <p>It was refreshing to remember:</p> <ol> <li>The simplest ideas are often the best.</li> <li>Technology is not the class="meta"></p> <p>About six months ago, I was in a meeting with leaders at a service organization. They were interested re-focusing on Facebook as a way to keep in touch with former customers (in hopes of repeat business) and give potential future customers a place to &ldquo;see what we are about.&rdquo;</p> <p>Sounds good.</p> <p>The leaders (we&rsquo;ll call them Liam, Sue, Cindy, and Randy) asked Dave, their part-time marketing person, to benchmark their page against similar businesses, research content strategy, schedule regular posts, and create a Facebook campaign (posters, postcards, a contest) at their walk-in locations to increase followers.</p> <p>Dave did the tasks pretty well. But all this moved their Facebook presence from a C+ to a B-. There were a few more posts and fans, but not much interest or engagement.</p> <p>With one telling exception.</p> <p>After Dave posted a contest to reward the most frequent commenter during a two-week period, a fan posted, &ldquo;If you really want to inspire comments, why don&rsquo;t you get Liam, Sue, Cindy, and Randy to post?&rdquo;</p> <p>Ah. Dave was the only organization voice on the Facebook page.</p> <p>Dave could create entertaining content, run monthly contests, find interesting industry tidbits, and generally keep people mildly entertained and away from the "unlike" button.</p> <p>But Dave couldn&rsquo;t grow loyalty, build community, and contribute to sales down the line.</p> <p>Why?</p> <p>Because the Facebook fans had never met Dave, never done business with Dave, and frankly don&rsquo;t care about Dave.</p> <p>They do care about Liam, Sue, Cindy, and Randy. Customers know them and are interested in what they think, read, question, and find inspiring. If these key people are not on Facebook , then Facebook really isn&rsquo;t about the product. It is about B- content that fans could find almost anywhere.</p> <p>Facebook is not a news feed. It is a community conversation. this cliche would apply only to other people, yet it has taken me a full 30 minutes of of hemming and hawing to get my rear planted and my mind focused on writing MY FIRST BLOG POST. I should get a cupcake, a candle, and a bib.</p> <p>Fear, of course, kept me eating my sandwich, checking my email, monitoring my Twitter feed, and sorting paperclips instead of writing this post. I finally fell back on another cliche: &ldquo;Write what you know.&rdquo;</p> <p>I know I was scared to write this post.&nbsp;</p> <p>It is scary to do anything for the first time. That&rsquo;s why two-year-olds are such wrecks.&nbsp; Fortunately, they know the rewards can be great (getting to that cookie high on the counter), and they don&rsquo;t have a better way to learn climbing, running, jumping etc. As adults, we have already learned how to fill our basic needs, so daily fear isn&rsquo;t a constant. Most of us can get to cookies, no problem.</p> <p>But what if you want to make a cookie, tweet about cookies, or sell cookies online?&nbsp;</p> <p>Fear will greet you at each new task.&nbsp;</p> <p>So do you just jump in, fear be darned?</p> <p>Not at all. Let me use myself as an example. I wanted to start a blog in order share my ideas with customers and potential customers. I also wanted my blog to improve my web presence.&nbsp; So I started reading blogs. Lots of them. I looked at length, style, topics, tone &ndash; and made note of what I liked. I also knew I already had plenty of writing experience, my grammar was solid decent, and people typically enjoy my writing. I did my research and drew upon my existing skills.&nbsp;</p> <p>This lesson applies to using any new tool, social or otherwise:</p> <ol> <li>Inventory the skills and resources you already have.</li> <li>Look at what others in your industry are doing with similar tools.</li> <li>Draw from Imitate what others are doing well AND add your own style.</li> </ol> <p>Then (excuse the cliche) just do it.</p> <p>There.
