Do you grow and sell any of these? Fruits, vegetables, eggs, pecans etc. Do you make and sell any type of hand crafted items. Help us put together a list of what's available in our area. It's FREE of course.

We’re gathering information about what types of locally grown fruits and vegetables might be available in our area this year. We’re also looking for folks that make all types of handmade items and offer them for sale.

As you know…or should know…..we can’t let you place any of these type of items on our Swap Shop broadcast. I’m sorry, it’s just not allowed by the management due to various sponsors we have throughout the year. We can’t charge them to advertise on our program, then let you place your items on for free. It just wouldn’t be right for us to do so.

Still, I do know that many of our listeners and others in our area, grow and sell various types of produce and vegetables throughout the year. It doesn’t matter whether you have a large farm, or just a backyard garden, I’d like to know what you have to offer.

As you may also know, I have another website at www.tasteofsouthern.com which is all about good old southern cooking. It’s given me a new found love for gardeners and farmers and what they do. It’s also given me a desire to buy locally whenever possible in order to help out those gardeners and farmers. With that in mind, I’d like to personally know what’s available and maybe share that information with the readers of my Taste of Southern website.

I want to create a list of names, addresses and what type of items you might have to offer….and when they are available. I’ll put that information together in a list, place it on my Taste of Southern website, and perhaps even here on this site if station management will agree to it.

I’m also looking for anyone that produces handmade items. Things you might sew, knit, embroider, build etc. Do you make handmade soaps? Perhaps you make quilts, baby blankets or something like that. Do you build things from wood or other materials. I’d seriously like to know about it.

This is not an attempt to find sponsors for our program. Although we feel our sponsor packages are very affordable, we know you can’t be a sponsor if you only grow a few butterbeans in your backyard.

So, what do you do? If you’re willing to join the list, send me an email through the Contact Page here on our website….or….feel free to call me any afternoon after 1pm and before 7pm. (I go to bed early you know.) My number is 919-770-8245.

If we get enough response, I’ll create the list and place it on my Taste of Southern website and try to help you promote your items. I’m also thinking we might be able to have our own Farmer’s Market type of event somewhere nearby and get everyone together to sell their items one day….maybe more.

I’d appreciate your comments and your feedback…..and I look forward to hearing from you.

Please use my personal phone number listed above or the Contact Page to send me your information. If you want to email me your name and number, I’ll be happy to call you instead.

Let’s get busy, planting time is near and maybe we can help our neighbors enjoy some of your locally produced items.

Thanks again.

Be Blessed!!!

Swap Shop listener, Louis Frye, really knows how to treat his very special Valentine on Valentines Day.

Swap Shop listener, Louis Frye, really knows how to treat his very special Valentine on Valentines Day.

Louis treated his wife to dinner at the Most Exclusive Table in town this past Tuesday evening. There was only ONE table available for this special occassion and Louis knew he had to have it. That’s why he took pen in hand and wrote out the winning poem for the Swap Shop – Piggly Wiggly Valentines Day Giveaway.

We asked our listeners to write four lines of poetry to be entered into our contest. We gave the first line which was “Piggly Wiggly, Down Home, Down the street,” and listeners were asked to fill in the rest. It could be funny, serious, romantic, whatever, it didn’t matter.

We had a great response to our contest and would like to say Thank You to everyone that entered. We called upon our Secret Panel of judges and they all agreed, Louis had the winning entry.

Here’s what he wrote:

Piggly Wiggly, Down Home, Down the Street
You can find anything from money orders to meat.
It’s the place to go if you’re looking for a deal
They have sweet and friendly peope that want make you squeal.

The judges said it was a tough decision to select just one, but they knew they had to do it. Then, on our Monday morning Swap Shop program, we announced the winner of our Valentines Day Giveaway.

Originally, we had stated that the winner would indeed dine at this most exclusive, one of a kind table at the Piggly Wiggly store. We also told them they would have their choice of any entree, 2 sides, dinner roll and a special dessert from the Piggly Wiggly Deli. We were also going to include a couple of 16 ounce Coca-Colas….or maybe even a 2 litre. We did it kind of “tongue in cheek” since it was kind of a low budget contest.

But, the folks over at the Piggly Wiggly took it a big step forward. They cooked up heart shaped steaks, baked potatoes, salad, dessert, coffee and sparkling cider for the evening. They also prepared a lovely table for our winners, covered with a red tablecloth and a white runner. The table was spread with rose petals and was setup in the middle of the floral section, right in the front part of the store.

Swap Shop listener, Christina Hayward was called upon to serenade the couple while they dined. Christina, and her guitar, performed several selections for the Fryes. She even put the words of his poem to music and sang that for them.

When he called in to the program on Wednesday morning, Louis said that there wasn’t any better food in town than what he and his wife enjoyed at the Piggly Wiggly. In his words, “It was like a little bit of Heaven.” We really think they enjoyed it.

Our special thanks to everyone at the Piggly Wiggly store for all the hard work and effort they put into making this a night to remember for Louis and his wife. They’ll be talking about it for a long time. Here’s a couple of pictures from the evenings indulgence.

Are you ready for snow? Share your comments and you'll be entered to win one of our Sno-Cream Kits. Everything you'll need to make sno-cream is included...except snow. Share your thoughts and win.

Are you ready for SNOW?

Snow was a great thing when I was a kid. I wish it still was, but to me, the only good thing that can possibly come out of having some snow…is making Sno-Cream. But, I could manage to survive without having even some Sno-Cream this winter. How about you? I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about how much I’m personally NOT looking for snow. It’s true what they say….”the bigger they are, the harder they fall.”

I tell all my friends the one place you don’t want to be when it snows is at a radio station. No matter how many times you might announce over the air that schools are open or closed, someone WILL call you to ask for the same information. It just never fails. Normally, I’m about the only one that comes in when we get heavy snow. Margaret and everyone else usually get to stay home if it’s pretty bad. But me…no way…I have to come in earlier than usual and man the phones to get all the school closing information, all the business and industry closing or schedules and so much more. Then, you have to track back and forth between both our stations and just keep repeating all that information on each station all day long. UGGG….Dear Lord….please don’t send us any snow this year. Please!

Now, I know we serve a purpose and help a good many people by providing the service. I will never forget, that as a young child, anytime it snowed I’d jump up and start listening to the radio to see if school was going to be open or not. Oh the joy of hearing them say that school would be closed that day. All was well with the world on those days. There wouldn’t be any school and my friends and I could play outside in that white stuff until we couldn’t feel our face and fingers any longer. Then, mama would make some sno-cream. Ahhh…the memories. Sigh…not any more.

Do you like snow? Do you want to see some snow this winter? Why or why not?

Leave us a comment below and let us know whether or not you’re looking for snow this year. We’d love to read your thoughts about it.

PLUS, if you’ll take the time to comment, you might just win one of our Sno-Cream Kits we’ll be giving away. Some lucky commenter will receive “almost” everything you’ll need to make some Sno-Cream in the event that we see snowfall around Lee County this year. All prizes are being offered by my new website www.tasteofsouthern.com Check it out. It’s all about Southern Cooking Recipes, Step-By-Step Photo Illustrated.

Our Sno-Cream Kit will include the following:
1 – 4lb bag of Sugar
1 – bottle of Vanilla Flavoring
1 – can of Evaporated Milk
1 – Wooden Spoon for gathering, stirring and mixing
1 – Plastic Bowl for gathering and mixing
O – SNOW…..IS NOT INCLUDED

We’ll probably even give you one of our SwapShop1050 Coffee Mugs when you claim your prize. Maybe that way, while we wait, you can just enjoy a hot cup of chocolate with your new mug.

Just take a moment and share your comments below. Winners will be chosen at random on February 1st, 2012 and announced on our Swap Shop program on WWGP-1050am. Thanks for sharing your comments with us.

We reserve the right to read your comments on the air as submitted below. One winner per household. You must be over 18 to enter. Don’t worry, winning one of our Sno-Cream Kits will not exclude you from winning other prizes on the Swap Shop. Prizes are being offered by Taste of Southern.com.

Congratulations to Linda Gay.

Linda’s name was pulled from the entry box early Friday morning during the drawing held at the Clearance Center. Linda was notified and has already received her prize. Lee Builder Mart had agreed to help setup the playhouse at her home.

Many thanks to everyone that dropped off new toys for the Marine Corp Toys For Tots Program. Because of your generosity, many children right here in Lee County will have presents to open on Christmas morning. All the toys that were collected stay in Lee County. The Swap Shop and Dossenbach’s Clearance Center were proud to be involved in this promotion.

Very special thanks to Gautier & Sons Construction for making the playhouse available to be used for such a great purpose. In case you haven’t heard about them….here’s a little info.

Sheriff Tracy Carter announces his office is accepting applications for SCP.

The Sheriff’s Citizens Patrol (SCP) was initiated by Sheriff Tracy Carter to give citizens of Lee County a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of his department. This ten-week course gives citizens an in-depth look and hands on training into the career of law enforcement at the sheriff’s office. Citizens are instructed by deputies on the subject of patrol, jail, communications, investigations, court, and community policing.

The SCP is an 10-week program, in which courses are held once per week from 6:00 p.m. until approximately 10:00 p.m. Each week a new topic is introduced and discussed. Citizens will also have the opportunity to ride along with a patrol deputy, work with jail deputies and communication officers. This enables them to observe first hand how the sheriff’s office handles incidents.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older, have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions and must be a resident or business owner in Lee County.

There is no cost for participants and each student who successfully completes the academy will take part in graduation.

The training will commence in the Spring of 2012 for the first twenty qualified applicants. Further information can be obtained by contacting Lt. David Prevatte @ DPrevatte@leecountync.gov

Applications are available in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office and can be completed onsite or can be downloaded here. Once completed, you can either drop them off with the on-duty Dispatcher or you can mail it to Lt. David Prevatte, LCSO, 1401 Elm St. Sanford, NC 27330. Once the desired number of approved applications are received, participants will be notified. Future applications received will be placed in the next academy.

Tasting is done, the decisions are final, as the winners of the Piggly Wiggly Pumpkin Pie Baking Contest were announced today. We've got the winners from both the Sanford and Broadway Piggly Wiggly locations.

Congratulations to the winners of the Piggly Wiggly Pumpkin Pie Baking Contest:

Tasting is done, the decisions are final, as the winners of the Piggly Wiggly Pumpkin Pie Baking Contest were announced today. Pumpkin Pie Baking Contests were held at both Piggly Wiggly locations, the store in Broadway and the store in Sanford. Both contests ended up in tie votes and additional judges had to be brought in to determine the tie-breakers.

Six pumpkin pies lined the table in the Broadway Piggly Wiggly contest.

In Broadway, the contest was so tough, additional judges were pulled in from shoppers in the store, before a winner was eventually determined. Six pumpkin pies lined the table as the judges carefully tasted small amounts of each one. All the judges involved stated that it was a tough decision to have to make, Broadway has some great cooks.

Judging the pies at the Broadway Piggly Wiggly store.

Contestants had to have their pies at both stores by 11:00am. Special judges selected for each store, sampled portions of each pie and selected their choice for Best Pumpkin Pie.

In the end, Mary Booth was selected as the maker of the Broadway Piggly Wiggly Stores Best Pumpkin Pie. We hope to get a copy of her recipe to post here on our website. Congratulations to everyone that entered pies. It was a job well done.

…

Six pumpkin pies following the judging at the Sanford Piggly Wiggly store.

Moving to the Sanford Piggly Wiggly store, there were also six pies entered in that contest. Just like Broadway, the Sanford store also ended up in a tie vote for best pie and another judge had to be selected to break that tie as well. Seems Sanford has some great cooks of their own. Of course, we already knew that didn’t we?

Congratulations to Amanda Johnson, winner of the Sanford Piggly Wiggly Stores Best Pumpkin Pie contest.

Judges at both locations raved about how all of the pies tasted. They all certainly seemed to have enjoyed the “pressure” of having to pick out the best one. Thank you also to all of our judges for the hard work today.

Both Mary Booth and Amanda Johnson received $50.00 Gift Certificates to the Piggly Wiggly store…plus…bragging rights on having the prize winning pumpkin pie. You did a fantastic job.

Our special thanks also go out to Greg Adams for making the contest possible and for supplying the gift certificates to our winners. I think this may become an annual event at these stores. Many thanks also to the staff and employees that helped out at both events.

Hopefully, you’ll stop by one or both locations and do some shopping for your own pies and cakes for the holidays. Sanford and Broadway both are fortunate to have such great merchants serving our areas. They are truly involved in the community and offer great customer service to all that visit. We appreciate their sponsorship of the Swap Shop and always encourage our listeners to tell Greg and his staff that they heard about Piggly Wiggly on the Swap Shop.

“Down home, down the street,”….thats Piggly Wiggly!

WWGP-WFJA News Director Margaret Murchison and Piggly Wiggly owner Greg Adams hold the Sanford Piggly Wiggly Pumpkin Pie Baking Contest winning entry. The pie was prepared by Amanda Johnson of Sanford.
