I painted this in my best friend’s studio. Metallica and Elvis Presley on the iPod, chocolate and wine to hand. The rich colours and deep brush strokes came out of nowhere – as did the carefully controlled white accents over the top. That gorgeous bright orange mixes with a deep, earthy purple and on into black to blend into some beautiful colours and tones. I can almost feel the heat of the sun as flames leap from the surface or maybe it reminds you of  fresh white sheets drying in the wind. Whatever you take from this painting one thing is for sure, it was a great day to be free…

Of course, if you know your music then you’ll be familiar with the Pink Floyd song that this painting takes its name from – a timeless classic from ‘The Division Bell’ which spoke of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It just seemed to fit perfectly.

As the name would suggest Zen is literally the ability to think, that’s it. In a world where only thoughts exist you can be anywhere and anyone you want. By using a staccato blending technique with a sable brush I have been able to create details within details in a very subtle way; producing a piece of art that is simple and relaxing to look at, engaging and emotive to live with and will add depth of colour to just about any modern space without having to shout about it.

I can’t believe that there won’t be a place where this painting would not be suited. One of the many things I love about this painting is the use of muted tones. For such a celebration of the very essence of life it would have been easy to go for the most uplifting and bright colours I could find, but that would miss the point completely. This painting is all about beginnings – the point at which things start and grow. Use of muted turquoise and blue has been offset dramatically with raging silver and hallowed greys and blacks; allowing the central figuration to come alive on its own whilst still being drip-fed by the background.

It feels to me like it’s about to explode into something huge – I can feel this cocktail of energy bristling with life and excitement, just waiting to get going. I imagine this single strand of creation multiplying a trillion times in the blink of an eye. Perhaps the real beauty of this painting lies in the fragility of the shapes and how they are held together by the smallest of links, like an expression of strength and weakness existing at the same time.

Despite the big blocks of colour there is a carefree and singular feeling to this artwork (hence the name). In many ways it is very individual and not afraid to celebrate minimalism in it’s purest form. There’s just enough going on to captivate you yet not be concerned with being overtly fussy or prudish. It’s not difficult to look at—instead relying on it’s colours and shapes to communicate to you.

You can be sure that he will slot right in to almost any space with ease thanks to the choice of colours; I have always found red, black and white a very easy going palette of colours, representing a clean, precise and controlled emotion that is on one hand crisp and clinical and on the other very focussed and forthright.

This is definitely a painting to make a statement with.

Every so often I take a break from my beloved enamel paints and pick up my water-based acrylics instead. The ability to blend them is infinitely better than the enamels which are always tricky to control. I love to break out of the process now and again and use a different medium to create with. If you look at Calypso from a distance you’ll see how balanced he is; this is because I arranged the composition in even and odd numbered segments—2’s, 3’s and 5’s. Never allowing one part to become dominant over another. So even in a seemingly natural and organic composition I have still managed to get the balance right; then again, that’s something nature is very good at anyway!

Taming the wild nature of paint and making it do what you want takes patience and time; balancing that with allowing it some organic freedom is where the real skill comes in. When you get these elements right you get a painting like this ; an artwork that sits on the ragged edge of chaos but never falls over. To me that’s it’s beauty: it’s ability to wrestle with randomness and transform it into conformity and structure.

The detailing is extraordinary. Some of the close ups are so small that you can actually see the tiny weaves of the canvas under the paint. The wonderful, warm orange colour is a spectacular backdrop for a multitude of opposing and contrasting tones that dance and dart from one side to another. Red, cream, chocolate, blue, purple, gold, copper, silver… they’re all in there somewhere and the result is a painting that fizzes and bursts with life.

Unlike so many of my paintings this one is NOT about fine details. Instead it’s about making a very bold statement; celebrating your individuality by saying “This is me, this is who I am” Sometimes we don’t need to complicate things when a clear, simple message will suffice. Glasgow Kiss does this beautifully and with lyrical ease. Simple colours, clear shaping and defined stroke-work; no matter what kind of space you want to fill I can see this at home just about anywhere.

The enamel paints I have used on this piece are very dense and very thick which makes the paint look like it is still wet. Believe me these two have real presence when they are hung together. Feelings of the deep abound in this painting with dense blacks and shaded grey gradations supporting an impossibly complex myriad of fronds, blooms and organic forms that hang on to every inch of the canvas. I feel like this piece is incredibly focused and purposeful; there’s no room for ambiguous interpretation. Considering the way that all this subject matter has been captured I personally find this painting very spiritual on a number of different levels.

The painting resonates with the word ‘deep’ in another way. I have said for years that I never think of anything whilst I paint – I am empty of thought. I know that whatever takes over me comes from somewhere deep down. It’s not an emotion that I can relate to; merely the purest state of existence. A state of  ‘no mind’; where only the moment exists. Whatever part of my brain may be responsible for this soon takes over as I lift the lid off a can of paint. I understand now why I am void of everything when I paint; when it’s time to let the core sing I have learned sit back and listen. I’m lucky, I found mine.
