On the Sweetlets end, we saw more and more interest in out-of-the-box solutions, especially with time and budget restraints on the rise. Companies are looking for quick-win methods to increase traffic and portal usability (i.e. easier and more powerful SSO and intuitive team calendars) and more efficient ways to extract data (i.e. from BW).

With the new NW 7.3 Portal coming out, there seems to be a bit of confusion around migrating applications Here’s a quick set of guidelines to follow from our portal experts.

Migrating SAP Applications

SAP actively takes care of the migration in their own components, so the new code for 7.3 is rolled out as part of the upgrade.

Migrating 3rd Party Applications

This does not apply to any custom or 3rd party applications.

Some 3rd party software vendors provide new or compatible packages. Compatible packages (e.g. current versions of Click Stream, World Times and RSS Express) run on old and new portals as well, so you don’t need to worry about migration. Other packages only run either one or the other platform.

Our Recommendation:

Before you upgrade to the 7.30 portal, contact all suppliers and vendors of your applications and ask for 7.3 compatibility. Keep in mind, it may take them some time to adjust their applications to the new platform, so don’t wait until you go live!

And in case you have custom applications installed (not just SAP or 3rd party), and want to upgrade your portal to 7.3, take a look at this “Migrating Portal Applications” guide from SAP.

Still got questions and not sure what your next best steps are? We do offer consulting, so get in touch with us.

The SAP TechEd 2011 conference wrapped up in Las Vegas last week. This is SAP’s biggest conference with over 6500 visitors. Here is a quick overview of the event from our perspective.

SAP TechEd Pre-Conference

Monday evening unofficially started the conference with a guest key note session from Jane McGonigal. She spoke about games and how games can change the world. This led to controversial discussions about the gamification of IT in the audience.

SAP TechEd 2011 Keynotes

Executive Key Note Session (Vishal Sikka) at the SAP TechEd 2011

Tuesday, Hasso Plattner introduced the executive keynote with a recorded video message. He explained that SAP has started fundamental changes, but at the same time SAP continues to support existing installations.

Vishal Sikka followed with a brief overview on SAP’s strategy – HANA shall improve the performance of SAP applications, Sybase technologies will make them more mobile and Cloud services shall reduce the maintenance costs per client.

SAP Portal News

SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.3 has generally been available for more than three months.
Many customers visited sessions and workshops at TechEd to learn more about the new portal release, how to upgrade from their current, or how to customize the look and feel.
As always, we are not sure how reliable the information is that SAP gave us about the future plans, but here is a short summary:

SAP has announced that all business packages are now compatible with NW7.3.

SAP wants to keep the portal as the central entry point to all SAP and also non-SAP systems.

At the end of this year, a mobile enabled framework page shall go into ramp-up as part of NW7.3 Portal SP6, which shall be released in the first half of 2012.

For the future, SAP plans to release a portal that is designed first for mobile devices, but also runs on desktops.

In a later stage Sybase HTML containers shall enable even more device specific functionality on mobile devices for the portal.

HANA shall be used to bring the most popular content to the top in real time to make sure that only the most relevant content is displayed on the small mobile device screen.

SAP plans private portals in the cloud and hosted on-demand sites.

Enterprise Workspaces are generally available and approximately 50 customers use it already. However the interest in this platform was very low.

Open Text and SAP have recently announced a Portal Site Management tool as well as a Portal Content Management tool. The release is planned for end of this year. SAP will sell this solution as an SAP product and also offer support for it. The user interface for the portal has some restrictions in terms of usability that we know from other WebDynpro based applications. Only very few participants listened to the sessions about this solution.

SAP HANA

SAP has announced HANA end of last year. In the mean time this technology is generally available and first customers use it already. With several sessions and a dedicated demo area in the exhibition of the conference, SAP emphasized the strategic role of this new technology. Below there is a short summary of the current status of HANA and what we learned about HANA at TechEd in Las Vegas.

HANA system in the exhibition area of the SAP TechEd 2011 conference

HANA is an In-Memory Database.

HANA is currently only available as an addition to an existing classical database infrastructure.

HANA is currently only available for Business Objects.

The next platform that will support HANA is BW.

In the future it is planned to run the whole SAP infrastructure including ERP on HANA instead of a classical Oracle database.

Today data are dumped into HANA from a classical ERP system and delta updates keep the data synchronized with the original tables.

HANA was developed by SAP using C++ as a programming language.

Column based data access allows better use of parallel computing capabilities of modern CPUs which increases the computational performance.

SAP recommends to use HANA with at least 128GB of RAM memory.

Certified server hardware is available at five vendors.

Hardware pricing starts at approximately $100.000 for a normal HANA implementation.

Additionally, HANA Software can be purchased from SAP.

SAP recommends to implement HANA with consulting support from SAP.

HANA can be accessed using an eclipse based development tool.

HANA supports normal SQL queries and JDBC.

Use of JDBC is not supported outside of Business Objects.

Read more about HANA.

A Quick Intro to SAP MaxDB

SAP MaxDB is a database management system you can count on to manage your midsize company for current productivity and future growth, without compromising the flexibility your customers have come to expect. Affordable and reliable from start-up, SAP MaxDB self manages so effectively that you also reduce expensive downtime significantly and save on training costs.

SAP MaxDB supports a wide range of operating systems, eliminating the specter of new hardware constraints, consistently winning high marks for usability and performance. And when you choose additional applications from SAP, integration is predictable and comfortable

Click Stream and MaxDB

The Click Stream Development Team discussed the advantages of MaxDB with iTechnology (www.itechnology.de) a company that specialized in developing applications for MaxDB Database. Itechnology recommended MaxDB based on their expertise and experienced with clients in various industries.

MaxDB is a database management system developed and supported by SAP AG

Operating Systems Supported By SAP MaxDB

SAP MaxDB is available on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and UNIX and for the most prominent hardware platforms (see Getting Started with SAP MaxDB)

Installation of SAP MaxDB

(see Installation on Microsoft Windows and Linux)

Installation of MaxDB in Clickstream

MaxDB was installed on Ubuntu 11.04 following the steps in the installation Document.( see Installation on Microsoft Windows and Linux)

Also installed is a tool for configuring, managing and monitoring SAP MaxDB Database called Database Studio

Total installation lasted about 2 Hours.

Configuration of MaxDB for Clickstream

Configuring MaxDB for Click Stream in your portal is quite easy. Simply follow these steps:

Log on to the Database via Database Studio as Database administrator

In the context menu of Servers, choose Administration Tasks Create Database

Create a new database in Simple mode (system default)

All important database properties are pre-configured, but you can still adjust some of them during the creation of the database

MaxDB has two user Classes, RESOURCE and STANDARD USERS

For Clickstream we created Resource user with EXCLUSIVE mode of Connection

Users belonging to this class can define Data and create database Procedures

And Grant privileges for their database objects to other database users

Experienced with Database Script for Click Stream

Here is our take-away after using:

The SQL Scripts for creating the Database tables, Constraints and indexes are syntactically similar to those of Oracle, DB2 and MSSQL

On the other hand, there existed more similarities with Data Manipulation Language Statement for MSSQL than with Oracle and DB2

Database functions like “IF EXISTS” are not supported by MaxDB Except as a Conditional Statement “WHERE EXISTS”

First things first …

So what is Google Analytics and how does it work?

Google Analytics flow chart (Image from "Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics" by Brian Clifton)

Google Analytics is a free web analytics tool which is mainly targeted at advertisers to analyze if their advertising model works as expected. Google provides this service for free with the expectation that you are a potential customer of Google through its advertising products, AdWords and AdSense. Therefore, it provides strong integration with those products.

Google Analytics uses page tagging, which is one of the data collection method out of two major methods including web server log files. Page tags are simply JavaScript code snippet that collects data from visitor’s web browser when they are executed on page load. Google’s page tagging code calls the JavaScript file, Google Analytic Tracking Code (GATC), from Google. GATC does the job by collecting information including referral to current page, visitor related data and creating cookies. Collected information by GATC is sent to the Google data collection servers. Finally, Google processes those data, and reflects the updates on your report.

10 Essential Items to Keep in Mind when Considering Google Analytics

We’ve boiled it down to 10 key points that you should keep in mind if you consider Google Analytics as your web or portal analytics solution:

1. Lack of Real-Time Reporting

Google Analytics dashboard example for the SAP NetWeaver Portal

Due to great amount of collected information for all the Google Analytics users and geographical propagation of the data collection servers, reports are updated hourly with the analytics data remained from 3 to 4 hours earlier. Therefore, the report that you currently view will be the report of 3 to 4 hours earlier if everything goes well. In some cases, due to interruption on transferring log files to Google servers, it might take 24 hours to reflect changes on your report. For the portal analytics this might be the main concern for you.

2. Data Storage Time Frame

Google doesn’t guarantee to keep your data older than 25 months on their server. If you want to keep your reports for longer period, which should be the case for portal analytics, you need to export them locally into raw files or some readable formats like pdf. Of course, this won’t give you a wide range of view of your reports.

3. Erroneous Information

Collected data with GATC are added onto the latest report at Google Analytics, and this process cannot be interrupted in case of any erroneous data collection due to problems on your portal or page tagging. Therefore, your reports will have the erroneous information on them, and Google Analytics doesn’t allow editing the reports to take them to an earlier state.

4. User Depended Reports

Because of Google’s privacy policy, you cannot track individual users of your portal. Therefore, you cannot take the advantage of the insight that comes from individual visitors’ usage attitudes. This might give such valuable information like click path of users on your portal and user activity reports including comparison of each users.

5. No Intranet Access

It is not possible to use Google Analytics on your intranet which is closed for internet access or behind a firewall, because GATC cannot send any data to Google data collection servers in both situations. In these cases you have to choose an analytics option that is able to collect analytics data into dedicated machine in your intranet network.

6. Dependency on JavaScript and Cookies

Cookies and JavaScript management in Firefox

As mentioned earlier, Google Analytics depends on your browser’s JavaScript support and Cookies. Disabling JavaScript support or a problem resulted from another JavaScript code on the web page cause stopping the JavaScript engine of the visitor’s web browser. Visitors can also disable or remove the cookies from their web browsers, as well as some antispyware applications and firewalls can do. This might skew your analytics reports. But, page tagging method as Google Analytics uses gives more analytics information that you can get from server log files.

7. Your Company’s Privacy Policy

With Google Analytics, data collecting and processing belongs to Google. This might be preferable if you believe that sending your analytics data to third parties won’t be a problem, as well as if you are trying to avoid maintaining additional hardware and software for analytics purposes in your company. On the other hand, you may have concerns related with sharing your analytics data with Google. In this case, you need to prefer an analytics solution that collects the visitor data on a dedicated machine in your internal network.

8. Privacy Consideration of User

Thanks to the today’s media, web users are more aware and concern about their privacy on internet. Google Analytics is a client-side tool, which makes the portal user aware of it through the additional requested GATC’s URL on page loading or locally inserted Google Analytics cookies. It is known that user behavior might be affected under the knowledge of that they are being tracked, as well as they might complain about tracking their visits on web. Such concerns may lead the visitors to use browser add-ons like “AdBlock Plus” to block Google Analytics script ga.jsp. Additionally, Google also offers a browser add-on to block data collection from all websites using Google Analytics. In this case, you might be looking for an analytics solution which does the job at server-side with server log files instead of page tagging as Google Analytics does. However, you cannot get as rich analytics reports as you get from page tagging.

9. Free, but … Implementation Costs

Google Analytics Content Performance report for SAP Portal pages

Google Analytics is a free tool; however a correct implementation and analyzing reports in case of erroneous data collection need keeping additional staff in your company for analytics. Simply adding Google’s tag on your portal won’t result readable reports unless you provide the necessary values e.g. correct navigation path names of your portal to Google. [See image to right] Therefore, using Google Analytics might seem a cheap solution at first, but it might be laborious task if you don’t have a simple web site or a portal.

10. Page “Hits” Variation

There is a limitation with the “hits” that your web site sends. According to Google “Each pageview, ecommerce transaction, custom variable or event triggered on your site sends a hit to Google Analytics.” and “…a single view of a web page can send multiple hits to Google Analytics”. If your portal sends “hits” more than 10 million each month, exceeding number of hits might not be processed unless you are a Google AdWords customer. Again, if your web site sends 1 million hits per day, your report will be updated once a day, which results updating of some metrics every two days. These limits needs attention if you have a portal having high visitor volume daily.

An Alternative from Google – Urchin

An alternative from Google - Urchin

Some of the mentioned problem can be solved by choosing an analytics software that is installed in your intranet instead of an on demand analytics service provider like Google analytics. One of the alternative is Google’s software Urchin. Urchin offers both raw server log file analyze and page tagging method. They are called IP+User Agent and Urchin Traffic Monitor (UTM) methods, respectively. Even the page tagging method, UTM, writes the visitor’s information that it collects with its JavaScript tag into the server log file. At the end, you have to provide the server log file with the information that Urchin needs to analyze.

We mentioned that Google Analytics is lack of real-time reporting. However Urchin allows you to process log files based on a period of time decided by user, or by simply clicking one button on its user interface. This might not give you the expected real-time reporting, but it makes possible to reprocess historical data. Therefore, you can overcome the data storage time frame problem of Google Analytics.

With Urchin, you provide the log files that it needs to process, therefore in case of any problematic processing; you can restore and give back the correct log files to Urchin.

You can also use Urchin in your intranet behind a firewall, because it doesn’t need DNS calls to connect to the data collection servers, it just needs the server log files that you’ve provided.

Depending on your Urchin configuration, you can also overcome the problems resulting from JavaScript, Cookies and Image dependency if you don’t use the page tagging option of Urchin. But again, the analytics information that you get from bare server log files will be limited comparing to page tagging option.

Privacy consideration of users was one of the aspects that we mentioned above. If you choose to use Urchin with its IP+User-Agent method, visitors of your portal won’t be aware of tracking.

Both methods of Urchin writes the information into your server log files, and process them on a machine that you have installed Urchin. This solves the problem if you have any concerns with sending data to Google by keeping the analytics data in your dedicated servers and database.

Finally, while Google’s software Urchin makes you view your reports in a similar fashion that you do with Google Analytics, Google charges to use Urchin. At the time of publishing, per installation prices ranged from US $2995 for Urchin 6, upwards to US $9995 for Urchin 7. Besides, you need to keep a dedicated server and database to use with Urchin along with your IT person.

**Important Google Update about Urchin**

“Urchin: In 2005 we acquired Urchin, whose online web analytics product became the foundation for Google Analytics, helping businesses of all sizes measure their websites and online marketing. We’re fully committed to building an industry-leading online analytics product, so we’re saying goodbye to the client-hosted version, known as Urchin Software. New Urchin Software licenses will no longer be available after March 2012.“
