Santa Barbara and the PCH

About a month after our wedding, we took our first married road trip and little vacation (since our honeymoon to Antigua and Barbuda!) and it was such a wonderful trip. Being married to Daniel is the sweetest blessing in my life, and traveling together is one of our passions and joys. We absolutely love adventuring together. While dating and "talking," we called ourselves "wild and free." As singles, before we met, we both loved travel and adventures, and had the best times being single and just exploring the world and finding out who we were as individuals. We both wouldn't trade that time for the world! We had so much fun! Getting married later in our twenties gave us time to figure out who we were, discover our dreams and start fearlessly chasing them... and now that we are married and have combined our lives and dreams to make one, we are all the stronger and more confident in what we want and who we are for it. It's not everyone's story, but we are grateful it's ours! We're excited to share our travels and tips, recommendations, experiences, and our story with you guys :)

We live on the coast in Los Angeles area and started our trip here, driving up the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) -- our final destination being Carmel by the Sea. A GORGEOUS and adorably quaint little seaside town in Northern California. A born and raised California gal, I visited as a little girl and adored Carmel. My grandma and parents have always loved the northern coast of California (it is truly breathtaking and literally one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in the world) and have raved about it for years. I remember growing up and seeing pictures in a photo album of Mom and Dad's first wedding anniversary trip to Carmel in 1984! I've told Daniel all about it since we met, and he was just aching to visit. So, we hopped in our car, drove up the coast -- stopping in Santa Barbara (where we fell in love :) along the way, and making our journey up to Carmel.

Santa Barbara's classic State Street is home to the most pristine white washed walls and buildings. Ideal for a quick fashion photoshoot haha!

Hands-down, one of the best places to eat in Santa Barbara is La Superica. My sister in law discovered this small Mexican restaurant and it's become one of our most beloved spots. Julia Child loved this place (she was a California-born girl like me) ... apparently it was her favorite restaurant later in life! The tacos are incredible. We had to stop for lunch. (If you ever visit SB, you just have to stop there -- and order the watermelon juice. Yummy! So worth it. And it's also super cheap -- so, score!)

Anxiety and fear are such heavy burdens to carry. Such a difficult and wearying struggle. And something I struggle with often. Honestly, there have been times over the years -- especially when I was college-age and just starting to develop the maturity to realize the frailty of life, how fleeting and precious it is, and how scary our world can really be -- when I would share with friends or leaders in church, Bible studies, or teachers in my classes, that I was struggling with fear. Often, my (sometimes embarrassed confession) incited a look of pity and words like, "Come on, now Erin. You know that not trusting God is sinning...... We will pray that you trust more." (Or in other words, "Get your spiritual shiz together, girl.") It left me feeling small, helpless, and sort of confused -- and yet, still shaky and full of fear (kinda like Piglet on "Winnie the Pooh.") I didn't know quite what to do with that. I'd repeat, "Yes, God.. um, help me to trust You." And then lay awake all night worrying about something on my heart, or anything and everything that could go wrong until my heart would beat and pound, out of control, and I could not breathe.

Yet, looking back, I wish I would have met those anxieties and fears with a different attitude. One that simply came to the feet of Jesus, broken and messy, needy and desperate, and said, "I don't really understand Your ways, Lord. Or why You've allowed this, this and this in my life. But I am overcome by fear. And I need You..." I wish I hadn't been made to feel guilty and "ungodly" for feeling scared. Because, I truly don't think my Jesus wants that for His children. He wants us to be free, happy, and joyful. Like a parent desiring all the best for their toddler.. trying to create a safe, healthy, fun place full of joy for them to play. That is what He desires for us. But, we live in a broken and fallen place, and sometimes it is scary. And it's okay to be scared. But, I have found, that when I take those fears to Him -- He is there, holding me up. Reminding me of His presence, His goodness, His grace. "Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."

"I prayed to the Lord and He answered me. He freed me from all my fears." - Psalm 34:4

I haven't shared this at all on my blog or social media but since Daniel and I have been married we have experienced some of the greatest joy and happiness of our lives. Yet, there have been two pretty big instances (and a few other littler moments and situations) in the past couple months where we have faced major uncertainty. I may share more later but for now, I just want to tell you and be honest -- because sometimes people on social media and bloggers can seem to have the most flawless lives. And it's okay to share just the good things. Sometimes it's not appropriate to share all our dirty laundry with the whole entire world, not safe, and not our own story to tell - maybe other people are involved in our situation who we need to protect. Life online is the "highlight reel" not the behind the scenes. And in my life even in the past couple months, we've faced some fearful moments. Especially one where I had to trust the Lord and honestly didn't trust Him very steadfastly through a lot of the situation -- I cried and feared, but laid at His feet and in His arms, which is all He asks. That is trust to me. Like a baby just resting in a mama's arms -- trusting that she will feed her, trusting that she will make sure she is safe. It isn't about us and our strength. It's about us and our severe brokenness and desperate need for Him. And He meets us right where we are.

Sometimes I think we need to realize that we are just broken and He is bigger than that. We are needy and He is our helper. And sometimes, we need to use things He's created to help us with our anxiety and fearfulness... Instead of just slapping a "bandaid" of "trust God more" onto our fear, I think we should talk about our fears and where they come from. In counseling and therapy, with family or close friends... being honest and looking into why we feel the way we do. We can get help from medical professionals, in extreme cases, because sometimes anxiety is a disorder. And sometimes, we need to wisely use little simple things like burning candles and sipping hot tea with honey, taking a warm shower, sitting and reading the Psalms, turning on peaceful worship lullabies or soft sweet music, and using things like essential oils (I love using lavender and "Stress Away" from Young Living Oils. And no, I don't sell them ;) I just really like those ones!) to help us stay calm and remember truth. It doesn't mean that the scary things will go away, but we can do our best to crawl up into His lap, lay our head on His chest, and rest in His presence as best we can on earth. Because He cares, He isn't judging or angry when we are scared, but is kind, gracious, full of compassion. And He gives us freedom. He frees us from our fears! What an amazing thing to have access to. A God who holds the Universe in the palm of His hand and cares intimately about all your secret fears -- big and small. I've created this little printable -- for me and you -- as a little reminder and tool as we strive to lay it all at His feet and look to Him in our fear and uncertainty, knowing He is good.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

I made Chicken Tortilla Soup last night and it was delicious! Last week when I made my grocery list, I planned it all out to be a Crock Pot meal to have waiting for my hubby when he got home from work, and have been looking forward to making it ever since! But, yesterday afternoon, as I pulled our Crock Pot out of the box (we have a tiny little kitchen and a lot of our beautiful appliances we got for our wedding and shower don't really fit in cupboards, so I have them boxed in our big closet) somehow the pot slipped from my fingers and crashed, falling onto our wood floor -- breaking into a thousand pieces! As I bandaged my cut fingers, I called my mama and she walked me through how to change my recipe from slow-cooker to stove top! I shared this on Instagram and had some requests for the recipe, so here it is :)

Ingredients

2 1/2 (14.5 oz) cans low-sodium chicken broth (4 1/2 cups)

1 (14.5 oz) can petite diced tomatoes

3/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion

4 cloves garlic, chopped finely

2 1/2 tsp chili powder

1 1/2 tsp ground cumin

3/4 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp ground coriander

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1 1/2 lbs frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts, precooked according to package directions
and shredded or cut into cubes.

1 (14.5 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed

1 1/2 cups frozen corn

1 tbsp fresh lime juice

1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

For serving:

Tortilla strips or tortilla chips (I cut up corn tortillas and fried them in vegetable oil to make
tortilla strips)

Shredded cheddar cheese

Diced avocado, diced roma tomatoes, sour cream

Directions:

Pour chicken broth and diced tomatoes into a large pan.

Add onion, garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, coriander, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add shredded or cubed chicken and cover with a lid on medium heat for 40 minutes.

Add black beans, corn, cilantro, and lime juice. Stir. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Allow to cook until heated through.

Serve warm with tortilla strips and cheese, add sour cream or any other toppings you like. I also served our soup with a big green salad and whipped up little corn bread cakes (the Jiffy brand -- they're super simple and about 50 cents!)

Hello, wonderful friends!

I'm a newlywed! And my name is now Mrs. Morris ;) I love it!

Welcome to my new and improved, updated little home on the Internet. Life has been a happy, changing whirlwind the past year and I am finally settled in our new home and back to blogging (I've missed y'all a ton!) and to working on a few big upcoming projects I cannot wait to share with you.

Our wedding week, wedding day, honeymoon and first weeks of marriage have been blissful! Truly blessed. Full of new beginnings, unspeakable joy, so much fun, lots of learning and growing, and some trials and difficult things, too. I began my blog over three years ago with a passion to share my love for Jesus and to encourage young women. The blog quickly melded into somewhat of a "waiting"and relationship blog.... I sort of became known as the "singleness and purity blogger." And spoke at events, The Influence Conference, and wrote much about waiting. It became my ministry. One that I could have never imagined! Every single day for about three years straight -- without fail -- I would receive more than a 2-3 emails from different young women from ALL over the world about how they were waiting, too, and found encouragement in my honest words and struggles shared. How they wanted to wait. Or how they desired the "sweeter song" (as authors Eric and Leslie Ludy write) -- a romantic life that is not full of emptiness and meaningless hook-ups and searching, but is filled with meaning, life-long happiness, cherishing love, respect, and dreams come true! Every day, I would sit and email them back -- gals who needed hope, we felt like their loneliness would never end, who didn't see God's hand in their season, who felt left out and very forgotten. Who were the only ones in their high school and college who were choosing to wait on God to write their love story and be fearless and fierce in that commitment, to pray for their future husbands and to be trust Him -- with reckless faith and abandon -- to write their love stories. There were gals who felt so so guilty and lived in shame for things God had already given them grace for... for we all fail and fall every day, and need Him. I found my days full of trying -- with empty and sometimes shaking hands -- to encourage and speak hope into their lives. To tell them how much He adores them. How much He forgives and gives second chances to and has unimaginably beautiful plans for. How He desires them, all of them -- and waits to woo and win their hearts. How big and beautiful His plans for them are, and how all they had to do was ask, and step out in bold faith, for His best and most amazing plans.. to share with them how He is not some angry face looking down at us, shaking His head and pointing His finger, waiting to humiliate and shame us. But how He is the most kind-faced Father who look at us as His babies, precious and wanted and loved. How He -- in all His infinite power and holiness and glory and wisdom -- looks at us with eyes of grace. (So much grace.) And how He longs for us to know that He only tells us how we should live because He knows best for us. Like a Daddy telling his little pig-tailed baby girl, "Sweetie, don't run out into the street while you play in the yard. You'll get hurt, love." -- how He does not want to stifle us and keep us from living life or having fun. But He wants us to have the most wonderful, fun, joyful, healthy, and safe life! "The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that you may have life and have it to the full!" John 10:10
Because I was in my own waiting journey, not wanting to settle for anything or anyone less than a godly, kind hearted, honorable, man of character, it was sometimes hard to share so openly here on my blog.. about my loneliness, the struggles - and the joys - of singleness and choosing to wait, pray for and prepare for my hoped-for future husband, and to live quite "counter the culture." Treating dating, relationships, and marriage with sacredness and care. Not always perfectly but with a heart that desired to honor the Lord. Sometimes, as I've shared my words, photos, and life pretty much exclusively on my Instagram account lately, I'll get comments from readers (or lurckers haha!) telling me that I sound super desperate in my writing about singleness. That I "come off" as if I was just waiting around, desperate for the first man who would look my way, suffering through being single and just dying to be married. And I see how it could "look" that way from the words on my IG -- yet, knowing the full context of my ministry on this blog and my story in full (as some of you sweet readers who've read through the last years of posts or have been here for them as I've posted -- I adore you guys!) I am simply trying to share with my still-single sisterhood how I so fully understand the loneliness you sometimes experience, the questioning of the Lord at times, and the pain of feeling forgotten. Singleness for me was amazing. I traveled, found out who I am, spent time with family and friends, had lots of fun with other single people and getting to know guys and had some sweet friendships with brothers, got to sleep in when I wanted, stay up as late as I liked, spend my money how I wanted, and just be fabulous by myself! It was awesome! And I loved being independent and wouldn't trade that season for the world. But I struggled, too. Because getting married to a good man was one of my biggest life dreams, something God put in my heart as a little girl -- and I believe there is nothing wrong with that. I understand how single gals can feel like your dreams and hopes and prayers are forgotten or unheard. I totally get it. And I almost feel a responsibility -- after sharing the long 28 year journey of waiting -- so openly on a blog -- the promises that CAME TRUE at the end of that single road! I openly shared the joys and heartaches of waiting. And now, I don't want to just ride off into the sunset and move on -- I want to remember this ministry and journey I have shared, and continue to openly and honestly share my life with you all. Because, every season is a gift from God. And I want to encourage those who are waiting still that it is fully and completely WORTH IT! I am so thankful, unbelievably grateful, that God gave me the sheer grace and strength (that did not come from me!) to wait for my now-husband. He is an absolute gem of a man. And I can truthfully and honestly say that he is everything I prayed for and more. He and I are far from perfect, obviously. But he is truly a man of integrity, character, and kindness. And ladies in waiting, I want you to know that every single lonely night, every time I sat at friend after friend's wedding (wiping away happy tears for them, and ducking into the bathroom alone to wipe away sad and "forgotten feeling" tears for me), every prayer, every moment I looked around this culture and world and said to myself, "How the heck are there any men of God left? They all look like losers and players to me...", every time I doubted and literally kicked and screamed to the Lord and voiced every single desire and pain and doubt (He knows them anyway...) and the times I got to know and dated guys, was in a few relationships before Daniel and I met -- and I just knew in the pit of my stomach that I could "push it through" and make it happen -- I could marry those guys, and just settle and get married for goodness sake! When I was tired of waiting and liked the attention... but knew that the guy I was dating just was not what I dreamed of, he didn't cherish and respect me or deeply know the Lord -- and when I broke up with those guys, and my heart felt like it was being torn to shreds. When I cried and wept. And knew I did the right thing, but saw the dream of marriage moving further and further away. It was ALL WORTH EVERY SINGLE SECOND! I want you to know that! That marriage is wonderful and a blessing and literally a dream. And marriage to a good and godly man of character is the best decision you will ever make. So ladies in waiting, keep praying for your man. Keep waiting, keep hoping. Keep dreaming. Keep working on your hearts instead of running around frantically trying to make something happen. Become a woman of character, yourself. And press hard into the Lord. Make Him your goal, your hope, your joy, your peace, your love and your life's greatest romance. As wonderful as Daniel is (and he is truly amazing. My sister and I call him an angel -- he is that sweet!) my relationship with him is second to the lifelong relationship I have with the Lord. The Lord is my first love and my greatest romance, my most valiant Prince Charming, and my dream come true. And waiting on HIS timing and trusting His pen to write my earthly love story is one of my greatest joys in life and the best decisions I've made.

All of that to say, I can't wait to share more here again. Of my life, my heart, my travels, my faith, my story and our journey, my love story, my love for fashion, food, home, and just my tips for lifestyle -- and just every day fun things! You are all such a blessing to me, and thank you for sticking around through the last year of me being absent because I was falling in love, getting engaged and married! Life truly is a gift and oh so precious and beautiful, redeemed and joyful when lived with Jesus. I'm really incredibly thankful for it all!

I'm Getting Married! (and, our engagement photos)

Oh my beautiful, faithful, old and new, wonderful readers --

I miss you!

This poor little blog hasn't seen me around very much in the past months, because I've been planning my wedding and living my engagement. It's been a beautiful season of preparation, waiting, growing, and cherishing the time we are in.

Just 18 days until our big day. And I am in states of varying awe, stress, over the clouds excitement, happiness and joy, and disbelief that my WEDDING DAY is finally almost here!

I just wanted to check in one more time before becoming Mrs. Morris. We will be married on May 16th, and then on our honeymoon afterwards so I won't be around until early summer, because I want to fully enjoy and be totally undistracted from my man, family, friends, and this moment! But when I am back, happily settling into married life, I am planning to jump back into this beautiful community, into writing (especially writing our love story for you all who want to read) and working on some projects -- things I started, then got engaged and crazy busy so dropped for a time! Lord willing, I'll pick up some things I haven't been able to work on and I am so thrilled to get back to it in the summertime, sharing more regularly here again :)

May my story and meager words and offerings here on this blog, as you perhaps read over the posts through the last years, be encouragement to those who are waiting, suffering, wondering, confused, depressed, questioning, lonely, and afraid. Our God is big and good. In the sweet as pie seasons and in the dreary, rainy, bitter ones. Keep hoping, believing and looking to Him.

I am shutting down advertising for this season, but will reopen when I am back from my honeymoon. I'm also not going to be "around" via email much, so know you will get a reply after all the wedding festivities and celebration.

I am a born, raised, and bred Southern California gal, but since years ago, I fell in love with Southern style. Keep Believing + Dreaming | Love Story

When I was a teenager, my mom & dad gave me a huge oak "hope chest" that I asked for one birthday. Getting married someday and having a little home of my own was one of my biggest dreams, and something I prayed for. I began buying little things, over time, with money I made working as a secretary for my pastor-dad at the church office & teaching piano and voice lessons to kids at a school. I'd tuck $20 bills away in an envelope, and take trips to Pottery Barn to buy a $10 "Emma" plate here, a sale linen there, hoping to build a collection in preparation for a future home. years passed. Many more years than I anticipated when I untied the pink bow on that cedar-lined chest and dreamily filled it with hope. My seamstress grandma made me linens and quilts, and I continued to fill the box. But my heart wavered at times... 4 years of college, a few stinging, painfully devastating heartbreaks. i moved into & out of 3 dorm rooms and 4 apartments. a friend told me, "Erin, just forget it -- go ahead and use that stuff. You need to furnish your kitchen in your new apartment. Just use the stuff now, it doesn't matter." But I couldn't. Single life was full, fulfilling, big, beautiful, fun, and amazing. but, those things were for something else. A dream, yet unfulfilled. when I watched every friend marry, one by one, and my path led me to move home with Mom and Dad again, I stopped adding things to the chest. It hurt too much, reminded me of the dream yet-unfulfilled. Sometimes, in all honesty, I'd see it sitting across the room and just felt like throwing it all out my bedroom window -- it hurt to see it there, reminding me of the empty dream. I gave it to the Lord but couldn't open it's lid or look at the items now-spilling out of it. And then, a season changed, a dream came true. My much-prayed for man arrived. In 58 days, we'll be married & have that prayed-for home. Today, I opened up the box, laid out the beloved, old (some even now-yellowed) items, and realized: dreams do come true, after all. keep believing in, waiting for, building toward your dreams, beautiful souls, even when it hurts.

10 Ways to Be Healthier This Year

The other day, I told you about my favorite DIY hair treatment that I have been using as I prepare to be a bride! Today I want to talk to you about some ways I am trying to live a healthier lifestyle -- in preparation for my wedding and marriage, but also just in general from now on. This isn't a health blog, and I'm no health guru! So, these are just some simple and random tips (from a non-expert) on small but important ways we can be healthier -- by adding things to my lifestyle since the start of this new year, and tweaking other things, I feel healthier and happier than ever before! I could go in depth into all of these "ways to be healthier" but this is just a post sharing a little bit about what I do.

1. Drink more water.

We all know how important it is to drink plenty of water every day. But, I - for one - often forget/get too busy/or.... drink other things instead (like coffee!) And so I have to be purposeful about getting water in. I often write it down as a tally in my day planner and calendar, and have been using a huge Mason Jar (like this one!) filling it up and drinking as much as I can all day. This mason jar is darling, and MONOGRAMMED!

Ah, and look at this mason jar set?? Mr. and Mrs?! Adorbs. My fiancé and I need them!

Since about a month ago, I have completely cut out all COFFEE in my diet. I know, I know -- it's shocking because I am literally Lorelai Gilmore when it comes to coffee:

But, as I approach my wedding, I want to be as healthy and glowing as possible -- and, because I have struggled with pretty severe acne in the past 2 years, I had to be drastic and try to figure out what is causing it (I think it may be the soy milk and lots of sugar I drank liberally in my coffee.) So I have switched to water and I do drink tea with honey only. More on this to come, but I have seen benefits of eliminating coffee already. It's not something I'll do forever, just for a while.

2. Use Essential Oils.

Essential oils have become all the rage with bloggers, amiright? I don't sell them so this isn't a sales pitch ;) But, I've wanted to try them for about a year now. A few months ago, my sweet PRECIOUS friend Heather (who is one of the first gals I ever connected with through blogging a few years ago -- read her blog here) and her husband gave me and Daniel a starter set of essentials as a pre-wedding gifts (so sweet) and we were so grateful! She is an amazing resource and knows all about essentials -- see her website here, The Oil Diaries. She is my go-to girl for essential oils, learning about them, and joining in with an amazing community of women who love and are learning how to use essentials.

I am not kidding, essential oils are really remarkable and they do work. Daniel and I have been blown away by them, actually. I love diffusing them (especially citrus fresh + lavender), using lavender on my pillow to help me sleep. Pan Away is amazing to use for sore muscles -- Daniel loves it after he plays viola for hours or does construction. I am obsessed with Thieves. It's actually gone and I need to order more from Heather haha! I always get several colds and notoriously lose my voice every.single.winter. January-March I have always been battling colds that turn into sinus infections. This year? I got my normal February cold. And then? I used Thieves every day -- on the soles of my feet, diffused in my diffuser, and a took a drop of it in a spoonful of honey every day... and my cold subsided within just a few days and I have been completely healthy since! This has never ever happened to me at this time of year, and really feel that I owe it to the essentials. Yay!

I am still learning how to use essential oils, and I do think that you need to research, take classes from the girls, learn and read as much as you can before using them. Make sure you understand how to use them with a carrier oil -- I didn't at first and with sensitive skin, I developed a bit of a rash. Now that I always use coconut oil to dilute them, I'm fine.

3. Keep track of calorie + water intake and exercise on My Fitness Pal app.

My friend/might as well be sister, Megan, told me about this app and it has helped me so much. I love that it has a lose weight and gain weight option -- most health apps just focus on losing weight, but gaining weight is just as important to many of us at different health seasons and it's often overlooked. I've needed to gain weight in the past few years (after a year of severe stress in my life, I began losing a lot of weight and then just kept losing) and so last fall, I purposed to start eating healthy and My Fitness App has helped me tremendously as it helped me figure out what I needed to gain to "get healthy" again. This one is such a given -- obviously we've heard this from our mamas every day since we were babies, but it's something I so easily forget to do. Fruits and vegetables are so delicious, naturally sweet, and satisfying but I often forget to eat them. So this is just a friendly little reminder. Someday soon I dream of living near enough to a Farmer's Market to weekly pick up these treats and make it more of a ritual.

5. Drink tea with honey instead of sugary coffee drinks.

Okay, as I said, I've completely cut my favorite think in the world out of my diet: coffee. And have replaced it with tea. Now, I know that water is really the best thing we can drink if we're gonna drink something. But, I'm all about being balanced and for me, that is still having a little caffeine and a hot, comforting morning drink I enjoy and that helps me "get going." In my first two years of college, tea was my go-to. Chai tea lattes from Starbucks, specifically -- you know, the ones that are syrup poured out of a tall box into milk -- and (in my taste) topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream and a little cinnamon
and the dorm/homework/sleepless nights of studying and cramming. I don't mean that kind of tea. I'm talking: hot water, a tea bag, and some honey. That's it. And it's actually really delicious and refreshingly "clean" -- meaning, I don't get a sugar crash hangover, and feel truly energized from a cup rather than weighed down from milky sugariness. Tea also can have many health benefits and antioxidants!

(I'm not tryin' to hate on coffee ;) You all know it's my favorite thing in the world. But as I, personally, am trying to become more balanced in my diet and hormonally, I'm taking a break for a time. I think that coffee is a delicious, magnificent treat :)

7. Drink Kefir every morning.

I had never heard of Kefir until my very health-conscious friend Carmen told me about it. When I bought some and tried it, I fell in love! It is not only very nutritious, but it's super yummy. Kefir means "feel good" in Turkish. It is a fermented milk product, similar to yogurt -- and we have all heard how beneficial fermented foods are for our health. There's so much to it, and I am still learning about all this. Fermented foods are full of probiotics, have many nutrients, are easily digestible, help gut health, and help build a stronger immune system. Here are some benefits of fermented foods. Kefir is a great way to start getting fermented benefits in your diet. I have read that Kefir helps improve the immune system, is full of calcium and so is good for your bones, teeth, skin, and hair. It helps purify the body of toxins and helps improve chronic fatigue. I buy it at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and even some regular grocery stores. And while that's a really fun treat, I think it's best for my budget and my health to cook with whole, healthy, fresh ingredients at home. Lots of grains, fruits, and veggies. A wonderful way to do this on a tight and busy schedule is to make crock pot meals.

"Going it alone" is not a good plan for me personally. My man and I just love adventures, exploring and travel. We simply cannot WAIT to be married and start our life together. When we first began dating (almost one full year ago, this month!) we described ourselves -- individually before we met and all the more when we "got together" -- wild and free! And that is who we are. As we're planning our upcoming wedding, focusing on working and preparing (in every way) to get married, the travel for this short season is something we anticipate (starting with our honeymoon.) But, since we live in California and there are oh so many places I know and love that I am longing to show my man, we get to take day trips and just savor it.

The other day, we set off on a hunt for wedding rings, and the quest led us to the quaintly beautiful town of Pasadena. I've loved it all my life. My grandma, who I'm very close to, led a successful career there for years. Every Christmas, Mom and Dad took us there to shop and see all the cheery holiday decor. The Huntington Library and tea room is one of my family's dearest spots -- we have spent so many sweet summer days there. And then, of course, one of my very favorite and most beloved girlhood movies was set there: "Father of the Bride." The big white house from the film is located on one of Pasadena's cozy streets -- grand yet homey mansions on either side, large maple and oak trees gracing sidewalks, their big limbs and leafy branches shading it all so quaintly. Sister and I often find our way back to that street, "stalking" the movie house -- snapping photos and sometimes even playing the film's soundtrack (yep, we are that sappy and romantic at heart!) Last summer, I took Daniel (or rather, he took me on a date to) The Huntington Library, before our month spent apart in May, as a last date before a long-distance season of our dating. But, he'd never really been in the town.

I loved leading him down the brick-lined alleys, through vine-covered old walls -- popping our heads into unique shops, cafes, pawn shops, second-hand thrift stores, and dining at an amazing Italian restaurant my parent's recommended to us. We had delicious salmon as our entree and tiramisu as our dessert (one of my man's fav's!) We tried on wedding rings at a jewelry shop and let me tell ya... I absolutely LOVED seeing that ring on his left ring finger. ALL the heart eyes. The jeweler literally laughed at me I was so starry eyed. Can't wait till he is all mine! :) We didn't buy the rings there, because they didn't quite fit but are still looking.

We ended the evening with a movie at the iPic theater. It's one of those super fancy movie theaters -- we were very impressed! It's like an upscale restaurant/night club/fancy hotel atmosphere. Red plush velvet seats, soft throw blankets, little pillows -- separated from other movie goers in a sort of little seating area. Waiters served us from a pretty extensive menu, and popcorn + candy were complimentary. I felt like we were on a 5 star cruise! We rarely go to movies, so I think that when we do, we'll just go to those theaters. We saw "American Sniper" and y'all... I literally cried the entire movie. Absolutely amazing and moving. I literally sat there in awe of our military, thankful for the individuals who have and continue to lay their lives on the line for our safety. It took my breath away and I believe every single American needs to watch and own that film! Literally such a significant story, and was so so good. Sitting in that comfortable, safe theater, I couldn't help but look around and then compare our situation to the reality of that story on the screen... knowing full-well that the only reason my fiancé and I were able to enjoy such a sweet, safe, luxurious date was due to the men and women who have protected our freedom, and for that I am unendingly grateful.

DIY Split-End Repair Hair Mask

As my wedding approaches (ahh!) I'm focusing on getting as healthy and as beautiful as I can be for my big day! My hair is, of course, one of the things I hope is glowing, healthy, shiny and beautiful on my wedding day. I try to mostly use natural products because they are inexpensive and I think they are most effective because they're natural and not full of harmful fragrances and chemicals. I'll be sharing some of the ways I'm getting wedding-ready here on my blog because I love helping you ladies out as much as I can and passing along ideas and things that work well for me! I'm sharing this as a post because I literally had super dry hair last week, and then used this treatment and my hair is as if it's BRAND NEW. I am not kidding. You have to try it!

Living in Southern California, it's dry (which, I love) but the dryness can cause dry skin and hair (which I don't love!) No matter where we live, winter can take it's toll on our hair and skin, and so a little extra TLC is helpful for all of us. Since I have long hair and don't like to cut or trim it too often, and I use a lot of heating and styling products, as well as add blonde highlights to my hair, my hair can be extra-dry at times and I struggle with split ends. I've used organic coconut oil on my hair for a few years now and swear by it (I'll do a post about that soon) and yet, I wanted to more of a "mask" to help repair my split ends. I found this recipe on Pinterest and so I have to credit this blog for giving me the idea! I was a little skeptical about it at first (because of the raw egg) but tried it out and literally, it left my hair SUPER shiny, silky, and feeling luscious. The process wasn't all that glamorous, but it's honestly so worth it -- so I had to share it with you!

Ingredients:

1 large egg yolk
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon coconut oil

Steps:

Brush any tangles out of hair and then use a spray bottle full of water and spritz hair to dampen or just wet your brush and run it through your hair.

Melt coconut oil (in the microwave or on the stovetop) but don't get it too hot -- once it starts to melt, remove from heat (you don't want the hot oil cooking the egg when you mix the ingredients together!) Whisk (I just used a fork) honey, olive oil, and coconut oil together and then crack egg and add in yolk until completely mixed. Just FYI -- dealing with the raw egg can be a little sticky and gross, but it's so worth it in the end, believe me!

Put mask in hair, and really work it through and focus on the ends especially. Put your hair up in a clip or hair tie and let this sit for 30 minutes -- at least. I left mine in my hair for 2 1/2 hours... I know -- a super long time. I got really caught up in cleaning and wedding planning (haha!) but, hey -- it worked out!

Wash mask out in the shower using water and then when the mixture's mostly out, shampoo and then condition your hair as usual. Towel dry and air dry, if you can, to avoid heating damage.

+ I love this conditioner meant for horse's hair -- used it on and off for years!

+ This one is a root stimulator as well as a conditioner... and it's made of olive oil! I've tried it several times and loved it.

+ Moroccan Oil is one of my favorite things for my hair. I haven't used this product, but have read MANY rave reviews on it on friend's blogs!

+ Ok, my hair is so long and wavy that it tends to tangle up. This little brush is my lifesaver. I have one in pink and got it at Sally Beauty Supply.

+ And then, of course, this fabulous brush is on my bucket list.

All About That Blush

Oscar night 2015 was spent with my family, eating my mom's delicious homemade lasagna, salad, and bruschetta. Daniel and I really hadn't seen many of the movies this year, but I just loved seeing the gorgeous gowns worn on the show! And was happy to see that BLUSH pink was like the color of the year -- because it's one of our wedding colors! Some of the ladies sported the shade, and pulled it off beautifully. I'm so inspired by blush (because, I'm obsessed with all things pink!) -- not just for my wedding, but also for my wardrobe in general. We can incorporate blush shades into all parts of our clothing and home!

I'm back!

After taking some time away from my blog to focus on planning my wedding -- it's a sweet time in my life right now and I'm so grateful for all the Lord has done. Daniel and I are getting married this spring (!!) and life is a perfectly wonderful whirlwind.

Thank you, my faithful readers, for sticking with me on this journey -- even when I've been away at times. Life is beautiful and dreams do come true. I have so much to share with you. So many parts of our love story that I have not yet shared. And we will be doing that soon, in a special way I will be sharing with you soon.

I am back to sharing my heart in this space, and -- as you can see, I have a new design!

Just to update y'all on a project I started this past summer, Graceful Magazine. I launched this dream of mine right before getting engaged...but, because I didn't know I'd be getting engaged (I thought it would be months away....Daniel tricked me ;) I started this big project and then life got....insanely busy and wedding planning started! At this time, I've decided it's not best for me to pursue the mag... as much as I wish I had endless time! But, we can't do it all -- and for me, the most important thing is to focus on my upcoming marriage and my man. Someday, I will pick it up again. But, for now, I will be here.... at this blog. This blog that has seen me through so many ups and downs, highs and lows. That has brought priceless friends into my life and given me hope when I felt hopeless. Thank you, friends. More excitement coming soon, and stories from the months I have been traveling and falling in love, wild and free. Love you all!

Friends! As you can see, the blog is under construction and I am almost ready to be back to blogging -- this coming Friday, right before Valentine's Day! So excited to be back sharing my heart, life, story and loves! Just wanted to stop in during the "remodel" process this week and share some of my favorite pretty things for Valentine's Day. It's one of my favorite holidays (obviously because of alllll the pink :) but believe it or not, this is my very first Valentine's Day to have a real Valentine (other than my sweet dad who always bought me and Sister presents) -- my Cowboy! He has a surprise day planned on Saturday, and I'm just so thankful for his sweet heart and thoughtfulness. He truly cherishes me and that is one of the main things I always looked for in a guy. Keep on waiting, beautiful girls who aren't settling -- good men exist (even if it took me 27 Valentine's Days to find "him! ;)

A NEW SEASON | where i am

Happy 2015!

Whew. 2014 was an amazing, full year. A year (for me) of such contrast to the one before: full of hopes fulfilled and dreams come true. I've really never lived a year quite like it. After a streak of about five honestly discouraging, long, weary, and quite lonely years, the Lord graciously and very kindly gifted me with a magical 2014. Very specific prayers were answered right before my very eyes and the man of my prayers and dreams came waltzing into my life. I cried alot of tears before I met him. How often my mama would console me and say, "In a moment, everything can change. You will wake up one day, and he will be here. Overnight. Just you wait and see!" I kept the faith (weakly at times) and then, as surely as Mom said, he was here. [sidenote -- many readers have told me in rather thoughtless comments, "How desperate are you?! It's not all about getting married or finding a guy. GOSH." And no -- it is not. But, it is a real and important dream. A gift when had. Something very worth waiting for. Not the end-all be-all of life. I was purposefully single for a long time. When men came knocking, I was extremely "picky" and careful. I wanted His best for me. Someone who would treat me right, who would be right for me. I wanted "sparks" and the "can't eat, can't sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence, world series" kind of love. (Do you Mary Kate + Ashley lovers feel me?) No one would tell a longing mother struggling with infertility and without a child how silly, stupid, or desperate her longings, prayers and desire to have a baby are. So, waiting sisters -- know: you are full and complete, totally loved and wanted, treasured and fulfilled without a man. But if you desire a husband, it is not wrong or silly, desperate or stupid. It is perfectly beautiful and do not give up on your dreams or hopes. Hold on and do not settle for anything less than "magic" and a man who treats you like the GOLD that you are! Sidenote ended haha!] I am so grateful for my Daniel. He is a gift and, though we are not perfect, this love story is truly written by God and I cannot believe how sweetly He has blessed us. For no other reason than He is GOOD.

And so you know, dear friend -- we are planning our wedding -- set for the spring! And I am literally neck-deep in planning and preparing. This last year has been so full of travel, family, and learning. And honestly, my little blog here has seen far less post and far less tender loving care than it was used-to. And that is OK. There are seasons. And though I have seen and know how infinitely special and wonderful the Internet can be (because of you people on it) sometimes certain things take priority. "Real life" wins out. And boundaries need to be set. I have so missed my community here. The sisterhood that this space really has been. But getting to know this Oklahoma Cowboy was important, and good. Life is an ebb and flow, a winding ride. And I want to do it right, for Him.

I want to be all there. I want to sink my teeth deep into this season, and feel it with my heart. all of it. I want to not just feel it with my heart, but think it with my mind.

And I cannot do it when I am neck-deep in trying to "catch up."

You, my dear readers, have sent the kindest, sweetest emails. Full of thoughtfulness and happiness for us. THANK YOU. For all the wonderful comments. The encouraging private messages. The sweet excitement when we started dating, got engaged, and are planning our lives and wedding. It means the world to have you here, to share it with us. Yet, I am honestly oh so behind. On email replies, comment responses, private messages. And I am sorry for not getting back to everyone like I wish I could. But I cannot, because I'm just one gal ;) And don't have unlimited time. But, please know that I read every single comment and every single email! And smile ear to ear (and sometimes even shed a tear or two) over your precious stories, hearts and words. Thank you!

And a (very) quick + brief word to those who have left and sent some not-so-encouraging or sweet comments and emails: this is a space of GRACE. Of encouragement and inspiration. Of kindness. I barely have time to reply to my kind-hearted, well-meaning, wonderful friends and sisters. I certainly don't want to use that time arguing, defending, or wrangling it out with hate-mailers. Basically, I feel the same way as Kelle Hampton, one of my fav blog sisters in her post on trolls and hater comments, here : "I appreciate meaningful conversations and differing opionins about everything from religion and politics to parenting, but personal attacks, demands and general 'you're doing it wrong, you suck!' comments simply aren't tolerated here. No shirt, no shoes, no service. Kissy emoticon. Handclap emoticon...... After years of allowing people to anonymously leave snarky comments-- because 'you put yourself out there, you should be able to take it.' -- I now adhere to the same rules I have in my home: if the dog s**** on the carpet, I clean it up." So that's that. I am so thankful for the 90% of comments and emails and words I receive that are life-giving and kind. To those who think I suck, that's okay and that's your opinion. Please spend your time on something more constructive than spreading hate around the internet, though, ok? It's such a sad waste of a precious life.

Friends, it is a season for me -- this next month -- to take some time to get caught up. To not just run a hundred miles an hour with my hair on fire trying to desperately catch up, but to carefully pick up the random scattered pieces that I am behind on, and to reorder this precious little blog space where I met all of you. To focus on cleaning out my overflowing inbox. To take a deep breath. I jumped head-first, fearless, into alot of exciting projects this year. With the BEST of intentions. My Graceful Magazine project (whose links mysteriously broke.... oops. That needs fixing!) and Erin James Shop, that I had the best of intentions to start but got swamped along the way. I need to step back and combine things. To re-strategize. And to make things simpler, more streamlined, easier, and more His. Who knew that we cannot do it all?! ;) And so, I am moving into a new season of stepping back.

I will be taking the next month to get caught up on my sweet blog and online projects, organize, and plan my wedding! This blog is going to change in some ways. I will be back! And fully here. But perhaps in a different way. This blog started as Sweetness Itself Blog, a dream from the Lord that came to fruition and brought so many wonderful young women into my path. And it was very-distinctly, a ministry. At times, I felt like a youth group leader. I wrote about very sensitive, close to the heart topics. Like sex and waiting. I spent hours upon hours every single day, emailing back hurting, broken, precious young women who needed a friend. I made very little money in general the last 3 years, I lived at home with my parents -- as I daily pursued this online ministry. In alot of ways it exploded and became so full -- a full time ministry that took all my time and attention; which I had at that time... what a gift to be single, unattached and free to minister in that way in that season. And my heart was full. Through this blog, I met my future husband. And it has all been the most wonderful journey. I am so thankful. For each and every one of you. And your blogs. And hearts. Emails and stories. Secrets and friendship. I was asked to speak at Influence Conference twice and to share my heart with single ladies. I self-published my e-book devotional, P.S. He Loves You. It's been nothing short of amazing. But my life has changed. I am walking into a new season. I am a soon-to-be wife. And my first priority will be my husband and family. It is a good, needed, right change. This blog is my heart. My story. Little pieces of my journey as a gift to you. But it cannot be the "ministry" it was. Seasons change. And a new season is here for me. I am so excited to stay here in this space, and invite you along to our journey. Thank you, dear friends, for your love and support. The emails we have shared, the friendships built -- they've been nothing short of His grace to me. Thank you.

All of this to say, I am taking a step away from the blog and some of my social media for the month of January -- I will be posting pieces of my life on my Instagram so come say hi there. Around Valentine's Day, I will be back and better than ever! With new things, a new look, and new posts! I am so excited to share more of my love story-so-far and more of my heart and passions with you, my friends. In a new, fresh, new-season kind of way! I'm excited for some how Graceful Magazine and my shop will combine in a perfectly magical way to (hopefully!) be something inspiring and good. A sisterhood, of sorts. A dream I have to connect you and you and you.

Sisters, I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you, to update you on "where I am" and to tell you I am still here. But need to take a little time to get caught up : on my wedding, to care for my health, which has been suffering in some ways due to the stress of being so behind and swamped on the blog, and to bring my heart to Him in this, and to be a good and faithful steward of this internet space He has so graciously given me. Thank you for being a part of my sisterhood. And stick around, sisters. Because, the best is yet to come. ( for you and me. because that is what He gives us. )

MITSUBISHI MIRAGE | review

Hi dear sweet friends!!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and that you're having a happy, restful, family-filled and blessing covered holiday season. I am so excited for some new things I am working on, more frequent posts, and updates I am making to this little blog this week -- just in time for 2015. So excited to share it all with you as well as update you on some things I've been working on (like, what happened to Graceful Mag!) Just gonna say this, ya'll -- planning a wedding and doing the holidays is no joke ;) It can be overwhelming and I've had my plate MORE than full (of so many sweet blessings) but am trying to juggle it all and sometimes I can't do it all (who knew ;) haha!) Will be updating you in the next few days and am excited to reconnect.

'Til then, just wanted to drop in and share a little review on an awesome car I recently had the privilege of test driving. Thanks to Drive STI, I had the fun opportunity to drive the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage and it was super fun.

This vehicle got GREAT gas mileage. Probably the best of any car I've reviewed -- which, to me is a huge plus! I would totally recommend this little gem -- it's compact but totally roomy! Daniel's mama visited us in California the week I reviewed it and we tooled around in the Mirage the entire time she was here -- all over So Cal, and it was roomy enough for Daniel's and my long legs (haha!) and several passengers.

The model I drove and reviewed was the color "Kiwi Green" which actually fit perfectly for almost-Christmastime -- super festive!

Some of my personal favorite features of 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES 5 Door Hatchback:

Front wheel drive (FWD)
USB Port (gotta have that to charge those iPhones and play music!)

My Experience + Thoughts:

What a fun car to drive! It was very easy to navigate and felt super safe (partly because of the rear camera.) Honestly, it was a smooth ride, very roomy, the seats were super comfortable, and the gas mileage was amazing. (Seriously, my fiance filled up and was so excited!)

I would highly recommend this vehicle -- especially for those looking for something beautiful, practical, and budget-friendly yet still NICE!
