Der Bericht hält fest: “Das vegane Leben ist auch moderner Lifestyle”.

Das stimmt, und es ist immer erfreulich wenn das Thema “vegan” in den Medien positiv dokumentiert wird.

Jedoch fehlt in diesem Bericht die Erwägung der zentralen tier-, umwelt- und sozial-ethischen Aspekte die dem Veganismus zugrunde liegen. Natürlich darf und soll vegan leben auch modern und trendig sein, jedoch sollten die eben erwähnten Hauptaspekte einer veganen Lebensweise nicht vergessen werden.

So z.B. das Produkt “Schnitzel Mediterran” der Produktlinie Cornatur in der Migros. Das Produkt ist auf der Vorderseite der Verpackung als “vegan” gekennzeichnet, während auf der Rückseite ersichtlich wird, dass bereits die allererste Zutat Magermilch ist, und dann zusätzlich noch Ei als Inhaltsstoff deklariert wird.

Die Migros nutzt das europäische V-Label um vegetarische Produkte entsprechend als “vegan”, “lakto-vegetarisch”, “ovo-lakto-vegetarisch” und “ovo-vegetarisch” zu deklarieren. Dies ist für viele KonsumentInnen sehr hilfreich, aber natürlich nur wenn man sich auch wirklich darauf verlassen kann.

On December 4, 2013, there was a debate on Don’t Eat Anything With a Face:

“According to a 2009 poll, around 1% of American adults reported eating no animal products. In 2011 that number rose to 2.5%–more than double, but still dwarfed by the 48% who reported eating meat, fish or poultry at all of their meals. In this country, most of us are blessed with an abundance of food and food choices. So taking into account our health, the environment and ethical concerns, which diet is best? Are we or aren’t we meant to be carnivores?”

The panel consisted of four well-respected and articulate debators. Supporting the motion were Dr. Neal Barnard (Clinical Researcher & Author) and Gene Baur (President & Co-Founder of Farm Sanctuary), while Chris Masterjohn (Nutritional Sciences Researcher & Blogger) and Joel Salatin (Farmer & Author) debated against it.

Each debator presented very interesting and valuable arguments. Who do you think won the debate? And who would you vote for?

It is also an increasingly popular trend among celebrities. From politicians like Bill Clinton and Al Gore, to athletes like Mike Tyson and Serena Williams, and from musicians like Moby and Jason Mraz, to actors like Alicia Silverstone and Tobey Maguire, there are many celebrities who prefer a vegan lifestyle.

Now even Jay Z and Beyoncé announced that they’re going vegan!

At least for a 22-day challenge. Jay Z promises to post about his progress, and hopefully he and Beyoncé will love the experience so much they will want to stay vegan. But even if it’s just temporary, these two music moguls will undoubtedly influence thousands of their fans, and hopefully inspire some of them to at least try a vegan diet.

So how about you? Are you ready to stop animal suffering and join a cruelty-free lifestyle? It’s delicious, healthy and apparently even trendy!

With a sense of humor Stiller talked about his hardships with his new diet without coffee and animal products. How he had to come out to his parents about it, that giving up coffee must be harder than giving up heroin, and that eating vegan leaves him feeling miserable. Stiller said that he misses ribs, for example, and now eats kale chips, hummus-burgers with nut cheese, raw almond cheese lasagne and similar foods.

Stiller mentioned that he doesn’t like to be labeled as a vegan and correctly points out that he really isn’t one, because he still consumes fish. Having apparently given up meat, milk and eggs, however, he has made a big change, which will hopefully become easier for him and help raise awareness and inspiration for a cruelty-free vegan lifestyle.

On March 20 2012, IQ² Australia kicked off their debate series with a look at the ethics of eating meat. Six speakers divided into two teams spoke for and against the proposition: “Animals should be off the menu”. Debating for the proposition were Peter Singer, Philip Wollen and Veronica Ridge, and speaking against it were Adrian Richardson, Fiona Chambers and Bruce McGregor. Their cases were followed by questions from the audience and at the end the audience voted. A whopping 73.6% agreed meat should be off the menu. The place has received a lot of media attention since its opening in December 2010, and on January 27, 2011, Star TV Switzerland published the following news report in which the owner (fine arts student Lauren Wildbolz) is interviewed and a meat-eater, a vegetarian and a vegan test and rate the restaurant’s menu very positively (video in Swiss-German):

While I don’t find it ok to illegaly spray public property, the message “Eat vegan today – for your own health and for the sake of the animals!” (rough translation) admittedly puts a smile on my face every time I ride passed it on the train.
