YouTube Treats - Kidz In The Hall "Got It Made"

We're happy to have Kidz In The Hall back at The 2010 SXSW Music Festival in support of their third album, Land of Make Believe. The Kidz deliver old school styled hip-hop, paying an obvious tribute to the infamous sound of the early 90s. By focusing on basics, their delivery is dynamic. Their lyrics range from story-telling to introspection over smart sampling. The result is consistently smooth and playful.

The Kidz skilled craftsmanship comes as no surprise, these savvy Ivy League boys make their mark for going against the grain of street stereotypes. The duo, MC Naledge and DJ Double-O, met at UPenn in 2000 and have been nurturing their hip-hop aspirations ever since. MC Naledge, a published author at age 15, has called himself a "college bred rap-star" and "walking contraditiction" for his career path, but his education has certainly impacted his ability to positively pontificate on the mic. Matched with Double-O's samples schemes, the two are modern-day role models who prove that you can do anything when you put your mind to work.

With March fast approaching, there are only a few weeks left to register for SXSW to catch The Kidz In The Hall along with many other acts, and go here to listen to their mp3 "Jukebox" and add them to your SXSW Schedule.

YouTube Treats - Arc Angels' "Always Believed In You"

I remember being a young lass and hearing "Beat's So Lonely" for the first time. It may be that Charlie Sexton would rather be known for something else but to a 14 year old girl in Plano, Texas, Sexton and his impossibly high cheekbones, wrote a hawtsome teen anthem for the ages... a song used particularly well in John Hughes' Some Kind of Wonderful, if you recall.

Flash forward, oh, 25 years and Sexton, still dreamy, hit the stage at Auditorium Shores last year with his longtime band the ARC Angels for blistering set of rocking bluesy all out excellence. If you weren't there, now's your chance to revel in the experience courtesy of "Always Believed In You," a song from their 1992 self-titled debut. So, it's an oldie, but a goodie.

In other Sexton family news, brother Will suffered a minor stroke last year and if you're in Austin town, they're having a benefit for him at Antone's on February 15 featuring Terry Allen, Patty Griffin, Eliza and Tony Gilkyson, Victoria Williams, Jimmy Lafave and Bill Carter & the Blame (featuring Charlie). On the positive, Will is expected to make a full recovery.

You can catch all kinds of SXSW badassery at our YouTube channel from videos to performances to panels, it's ALL THERE. Or here, as it were.

Meet the Team: Team Facelift

The former graffiti crew from the Upper East and West sides of Manhattan, Team Facelift consists of a cleverly named trio that indulges its listeners with glam rap and equally clever lyrics. The group is known for their volatile dance beats and questionably insidious behavior on stage.

The minds behind Team Facelift, Big Bopper aka Teen Wolf or Machine, Alden F Fonda or simply Fonda and Fabrizio Bonaducce -- who is called Fat Jew, say their ultimate aim is "to do to rap what Elton John did to being gay." Team Facelift's self-released 2006 debut album, Mixed Emotions, was given a Parental Advisory sticker, but the band claims the message is all in good fun. PAID 2 RAGE, their new album, will be in stores in 2010.

Team Facelift's video for "Lotion in the Basket" -- courtesy of the SXSW YouTube channel. And don't forget to check back for schedule times of this and other bands performing in the 2010 Music Festival. Catch Team Facelift and a slew of other bands at SXSW 2010. Register by January 15 to take advantage of discounted badge prices!

SXSW & BBQ: The Tasty Truth

Chowhounds who visit Austin and Central Texas for SXSW make it a point to experience the culinary treasure of Texas barbecue. In March 2009, the SXSW Music Conference presented a distinguished panel of experts, including Rick Schmidt, the owner of the legendary Kreuz Market, to discuss the traditions, tastes and associated lore at the panel "BBQ The Texas Way." We've posted highlights of the panel to whet your appetite for a few slices of brisket in March. The only fork you need is at the end of your arm.

YouTube Treats - All The Angels

Well, we have more Dead Confederate videos via the SXSW YouTube Channel than you can shake a stick at.

Have a gander at their SXSW 2009 showcase closer "All the Angels." Another fine offering from the Georgia boys whose thick, heavy sound will enchant you in a disenchanting sort of way.

Am I the only one who thinks singer Hardy Morris sounds like Redd Kross' Steven Macdonald sometimes?

The band are finishing up some dates with The Meat Puppets this week and have dates scheduled in the states through November 7. They're even coming to Austin next month... to Fun Fun Fun Fest before they head off to the UK in December. Mmm, London in December. Dreamy.

That's all for now, ladies and gents. I shall return with some more YT Treats before too long. In the meantime you can follow SXSW on Twitter @sxsw. Or me @mspark. Or even Dead Confederate @deadconfederate.

You can also email us at musicblog@sxsw.com.

Okay, I have to go chase down a cat, lp

YouTube Treats - The Thunderous Riffage of Red Fang

I cannot overstate how incredible this band is. Complete with stupefying, face melting riffs and laser sharp twin guitar leads. All that and songs about aliens destroying humanity. Live, they are an eight legged Tazmanian Devil. Whirling, snarling and destroying everything in their wake. Make note kids. This is what rock is all about. Here they are layin' the Earth to waste at Spiro's.

I present you with Red Fang's "Sharks":

Check out more live performances, conference talks, general info and lots more on the SXSW YouTube channel.

YouTube Treats - The Return of Dead Confederate

Ah, the return of Dead Confederate to the SXSW Music Bloggy. If you recall, we featured a clip of the band performing "Yer Circus" in June.

Now we're back with yet another song from their bitchin' SXSW performance at Spiro's. "The Rat" made its way onto the US Modern Rock chart and is a dirgey little number fraught with emotion and 80s guitars, both tasty elements, if you ask me.

Anyway, it seems that the 17 year old in all of us should enjoy some of this Georgia badassery. So, without further ado jeunes et fils, "The Rat"...

I sorta feel like I'm back at Theatre Gallery (in Dallas, if you knew it) in 1987 bein' all homeless, feelin' all teen angsty, and wonderin' if the singer is as cute offstage as he is on (but I wasn't a groupie, I swear!!).

The band hits the road again October 21 for some more dates with The Meat Puppets. Check them out if you can.

The SXSW Video Czars are busy editing away so we'll have more excellent musical goodness coming to you VERY SOON. In the meantime, you can hang out at our superfun YouTube channel.

See you soon-like and I hope you're all enjoying this autumnal thing that is happening, lp

Jeffrey Tambor's Acting Workshop at SXSW 2009

Ahh, the good ol' summertime. Nothing says summer quite like barbeque. So kick back with a big plate of brisket, ribs, and sausage and listen to the podcast from March of the panel BBQ The Texas Way. Celebrated in story, song and legend, Texas barbeque is clearly state-of-the-art when it comes to smoked meat traditions. Prepare to embark on a beefy sojourn.

The SXSW YouTube Video Vault - Johnny Cash - 1994 Keynote Address

Flashback to 1994. Where were you on March 17? That was the day the man in black came to SXSW to serve as keynote speaker and blow us all away with a mesmerizing set at Emo's. Yes, Johnny Cash played Emo's... on the same bill as Beck... who was then largely unknown.

But I digress... I feel fortunate to introduce this keynote clip. I feel even more fortunate to have been there. (Yes, that's me standing next to him looking like a total doof in the press shots. He was surrounded by men, decided that wasn't right and said, "I need some girls here" and grabbed then music booker Annie McReynolds and me to stand beside him. Talk about being in a magical place at a magical time.)

It's amazing to see Mr. Cash come to life, sharing stories, singing songs. He was a sweet and generous man and of the hundreds of highlights throughout the history of SXSW, this one stands the test of time and shows what a consummate performer and funny man he was. We were all dazzled and charmed.

Cash's SXSW performance at Emo's was a precursor to the April release of American Recordings, his first collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. You'll see snippets of songs from the album in this clip. The record revitalized Cash's career and included a new version of "Delia's Gone" and a soulful reworking of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" alongside the Glenn Danzig penned "Thirteen."

I'm thrilled they dug this clip out of the video vault. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Cash...
