আজ শুরু হচ্ছে ছোট ক্রিকেটের বড় আকর্ষন: "আজ শুরু হচ্ছে ছোট ক্রিকেটের বড় আকর্ষন"

আমার কিন্তু এমনিতে ক্যারিবিয়ান মাটিতে ক্রিকেট দেখতে ভাল লাগে আর আজ সেখানেই শুরু হচ্ছে ছোট ক্রিকেটের বড় আকর্ষন। ওয়েষ্ট ইন্ডিজের গায়ানায় শ্রীলংকা ও নিউজিল্যান্ড মুখোমুখি হচ্ছে টি২০ক্রিকেটের বিশ্বকাপের প্রথম বড় ম্যাচ।এই দুটো দল ফেভারিটের তালিকায় না থাকলেও যে কোন সময় চমকে দেবার ক্ষমতা রাখে।

অন্য ম্যাচে মুখোমুখি হচ্ছে স্বাগতিক ওয়েষ্ট ইন্ডিজ ও জায়ান্ট কিলার আয়ারল্যান্ড। আয়ারল্যান্ডকে মনে আছে তো ? গতবার বাংলাদেশকে হারিয়ে দেয়া সেই বাংলাদেশ । এবারও যথারীতি টগবগে । প্র্যাকটিস ম্যাচে আরেক চমক আফগানিস্তানের কাছে হারলেও আয়ারল্যান্ড কিন্তু বেশ আশাপ্রদ একটা দল এই ছোট ক্রিকেটের আসরে। যে কোন বড় দলকে চমকে দিতে অন্তত: আয়ারল্যান্ড, আফগানিস্তান ও জিম্বাবুয়ে কে ভুলে যাবেন নি কিন্তু। এরা যেকোন সময় যে কোন অঘটন ঘটিয়ে দিতে পারে। এই তো প্র্যাকটিস ম্যাচে জিম্বাবুয়ে অষ্ট্রেলিয়াকে হারাল।

Chile assesses damage from mammoth earthquake

TALCA, Chile – A weeping man strokes the hand of a dead woman in a collapsed cafe. Survivors huddle around bonfires in the rubble of their homes. Smashed cars lie beneath bridges torn asunder by one of history's strongest earthquakes. Authorities in Chile put the official death tollfrom Saturday's 8.8-magnitude quake at 214, but said they believed the number would grow. They said 1.5 million Chileans were affected and 500,000 homes severely damaged by the mammoth temblor. "We think the real (death) figure tops 300 and we believe this will continue to grow," said Carmen Fernandez, head of the National Emergency Agency. President Michelle Bachelet, who leaves office March 11, declared a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile. "It was a catastrophe of devastating consequences," she said. Bachelet said the government had not asked for assistance from other countries. If it does, President Barack Obama said, the United States "will be there." Around the world, leaders echoed his sentiment. As night fell Saturday, about a dozen men and children sat around a bonfire in the remains of their homes in Curico, a town 122 miles (196 kms) south of the capital, Santiago. "We were sleeping when we felt the quake, very strongly. I got up and went out the door. When I looked back my bed was covered in rubble," said survivor Claudio Palma. Fabian Miners, 22, was put in charge of tallying damages in Curico and surrounding villages. He said he had counted 90 deaths in the area, mainly people over 50 or 60 who could not get out of their falling adobe-walled homes in time. Erika Vasquez, 28, said she and 14 of her relatives were sheltering under three small tarpaulins in the park in front of their collapsed home. "They told us to go somewhere else, but all our things are here," said Vasquez, pointing at the rubble of what had been the family's home for 44 years. The quake tore apart houses, bridges and highways, and Chileans near the epicenter were thrown from their beds by the force of the mega-quake, which was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) to the east. The full extent of damage remained unclear as dozens of aftershocks — one nearly as powerful as Haiti's devastating Jan. 12 earthquake — shuddered across the disaster-prone Andean nation. The quake caused newly built apartment buildings to slump and fall. Power lines collapsed. Falling bridges tossed cars and trucks like toys. In Talca, just 65 miles (105 kilometers) from the epicenter, people sleeping in bed suddenly felt like they were flying through airplane turbulence as their belongings cascaded down around them when the quake hit at 3:34 a.m. A deafening roar rose from the convulsing earth as buildings groaned and clattered. The sound of screams mixed with the crash of plates and windows. Then the earth stilled and stunned survivors began streaming outside. A journalist emerging into the darkened street scattered with downed power lines saw a man, some of his own bones apparently broken, weeping and caressing the hand of a woman who had died in a cafe. Two other victims lay dead a few feet (meters) away. Also near the epicenter was Concepcion, one of the country's largest cities, where a 15-story building collapsed, leaving a few floors intact. In the capital Santiago, 200 miles (325 kilometers) to the northeast, the national Fine Arts Museum was badly damaged and an apartment building's two-story parking lot pancaked, smashing about 50 cars. Santiago's airport was closed and its subway shut down. Chile's main seaport, in Valparaiso, was ordered closed while damage was assessed. Two oil refineriesshut down. The state-run Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, halted work at two of its mines, but said it expected them to resume operations quickly. The jolt set off a tsunami that swamped San Juan Bautista village on Robinson Crusoe Islandoff Chile, killing at least five people and leaving 11 missing, said Guillermo de la Masa, head of the government emergency bureau for the Valparaiso region. On the mainland, several huge waves inundated part of the major port city of Talcahuano, near hard-hit Concepcion. A large boat was swept more than a block inland. The surge of water raced across the Pacific, setting off alarm sirens in Hawaii, Polynesia and Tonga, but the tsunami waves proved small and did little damage as they reached as far as Japan. Robert Williams, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey, said the Chilean quake was hundreds of times more powerful than Haiti's magnitude-7 quake, though it was deeper and cost far fewer lives. The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and made 2 million homeless. DHAKA (AFP) – Bangladesh on Thursday executed five men who killed founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975, ending a 30-year fight for justice by his daughter, who is now prime minister.
The five were hanged by specially-trained fellow convicts just after midnight, when their last-minute pleas for clemency were rejected.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed satisfaction that finally the nation has received justice," her spokesman, Abul Kalam Azad, told AFP.
"She believes the executions will go a long way in closing a dark chapter of our history and will help restore the rule of law to our country," he said, adding that Hasina had spent the night offering prayers of gratitude.
Mujib, as he was known, led Bangladesh to independence in 1971 during a bloody war against Pakistan before he was gunned down at his home along with his wife and three sons on August 15, 1975.
The coup leaders were later protected by General Zia Rahman, who assumed the presidency in 1977 and whom Hasina has accused of playing a role in Mujib's murder.

Hasina and Khaleda Zia, widow of Zia Rahman, have since cultivated a bitter and debilitating rivalry that has dominated national politics for decades.
Their political antagonism has often spilled onto the streets, and elections in 2007 were cancelled due to inter-party violence during campaigning in which at least 35 people were killed.
The case against Mujib's assassins was only opened in 1996 when Khaleda Zia was replaced as prime minister by Hasina, who removed legal barriers shielding the accused men.
In 1998, 15 men were found guilty and sentenced to death.
Three of them were acquitted however in 2001. Of the other 12, six are in hiding and one is believed to have died in Zimbabwe.
Hasina lost power in 2001 when Khaleda Zia returned to office -- and the case was left to languish in the appeal courts.
Proceedings were reactivated last year after Hasina won a landslide election against Zia, who has since kept largely out of the public eye.
Hasina on Thursday attempted to pre-empt any street violence by calling on her supporters to show restraint.
Thousands of people gathered outside the prison in Old Dhaka for the executions and officials from Hasina's ruling Awami party held a procession through the capital.
"We are finally free of stigma and disgrace. At last justice has been meted to the killers of the father of our nation," said a female Awami supporter in front of the Dhaka house where Mujib was murdered.
A total of 20 people, including domestic staff, were killed when the group of officers stormed Mujib's residence during the 1975 coup, but the murder charges that were brought related only to his death.
The executed men's bodies "have been sent to their village homes across the country with elite Rapid Action Battalion forces escorting the ambulances," said the deputy national prisons chief, Syed Iftekhar Uddin.
"They were hanged by fellow convicts who have been trained to do execution jobs. They met their relatives one final time a few hours before."
Hasina, who has yet to comment directly on the hangings, is likely to pursue further trials in connection to the 1971 liberation war.
She has sought international assistance on how to bring to court those who collaborated with Pakistan during the conflict.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Within days, the government will move 400,000 people made homeless by Haiti's epic earthquake from their squalid improvised camps throughout the shattered capital to new resettlement areas on the outskirts, a top Haitian official said Thursday.

Authorities are worried about sanitation and disease outbreaks in makeshift settlements like the one on the city's central Champs de Mars plaza, said Fritz Longchamp, chief of staff to President Rene Preval.

"The Champ de Mars is no place for 1,000 or 10,000 people," Longchamp told The Associated Press. "They are going to be going to places where they will have at least some adequate facilities."

He said buses would start moving people within a week to 10 days, once new camps are ready. Brazilian U.N. peacekeepers were already leveling land in the suburb of Croix des Bouquets for a new tent city, the Geneva-based intergovernmental International Organization for Migration reported Thursday.

The hundreds of thousands whose homes were destroyed in the Jan. 12 quake had settled in more than 200 open spaces around the city, the lucky ones securing tents for their families, but most living under the tropical sun on blankets, on plastic sheets or under tarpaulins strung between tree limbs.

The announcement came as search-and-rescue teams packed their dogs and gear Thursday, with hopes almost gone of finding any more alive in the ruins. The focus shifted to keeping injured survivors alive, fending off epidemics and getting help to the hundreds of homeless still suffering.

"We're so, so hungry," said Felicie Colin, 77, lying outside the ruins of her Port-au-Prince nursing home with dozens of other elderly residents who have hardly eaten since the earthquake hit on Jan. 12.

A melee erupted at one food distribution point as people broke into the storehouse and fought each other over the bags.

As aftershocks still shook the city, aid workers streamed into Haiti with water, food, drugs, latrines, clothing, trucks, construction equipment, telephones and tons of other supplies. The international Red Cross called it the greatest deployment of emergency responders in its 91-year history.

But the built-in bottlenecks of this desperately poor, underdeveloped nation and the sheer scale of the catastrophe still left many of the hundreds of thousands of victims without help. The U.S. military reported a waiting list of 1,400 international relief flights seeking to land on Port-au-Prince's single runway, where 120 to 140 flights were arriving daily.

"They don't see any food and water coming to them, and they are frustrated," said Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.

Four ships managed to dock at the capital's earthquake-damaged port, holding out the promise of a new avenue for getting aid to the city. But the going was slow since only one truck at a time could maneuver on the crack-riven pier.

The picture was especially grim at emergency medical centers, where shortages of surgeons, nurses, their tools and supplies have backed up critical cases.

"A large number of those coming here are having to have amputations, since their wounds are so infected," said Brynjulf Ystgaard, a Norwegian surgeon at a Red Cross field hospital.

Food was reaching tens of thousands, but the need was much greater. Perhaps no one was more desperate than the 80 or so residents of the damaged Municipal Nursing Home, in a slum near the shell of Port-au-Prince's devastated cathedral. The quake killed six of the elderly, three others have since died of hunger and exhaustion, and several more were barely clinging to life.

"Nobody cares," said Phileas Justin, 78. "Maybe they do just want us to starve to death."

In the first eight days after the quake, they had eaten just a bit of pasta cooked in gutter water and a bowl of rice each. On Thursday, they had a small bowl of spaghetti and five bags of rice and beans, and cooking oil, were delivered.

A dirty red sheet covered the body of Jean-Marc Luis, who died late Wednesday. "He died of hunger," said security guard Nixon Plantin. On Thursday, four days after The Associated Press first reported on the patients' plight, workers from the British-based HelpAge International visited and said they would help.

One by one, such deaths were adding to a Haitian government-estimated toll of 200,000 dead, as reported by the European Commission. It said 250,000 people were injured and 2 million homeless in the nation of 9 million.

As U.S. troops began patrolling Port-au-Prince to boost security, sporadic looting and violence continued.

At a building in the Carrefour neighborhood where the multi-faith Eagle Wings Foundation of West Palm Beach, Florida, was to distribute food, quake victims from a nearby tent camp suddenly stormed the stores and made off with what the charity's Rev. Robert Nelson said were 50 tons of rice, oil, dried beans and salt. Fights broke out as others stole food from the looters.

At least 124 people were saved by search-and-rescue teams since the quake, the European Commission reported. As hopes faded, some of the 1,700 specialists, working in four dozen teams with 160 dogs, began demobilizing.

Joe Downey, a fire battalion chief from an 80-member New York City police and firefighter unit, said this was the worst destruction his rescue team had ever seen.

"Katrina was bad," he said of the 2005 hurricane. "But this was a magnitude at least 100 times worse."

On Thursday, 18 hospitals and emergency field hospitals were working in Port-au-Prince, but the burden was overwhelming.

Doctors said patients were dying of sepsis from untreated wounds and they warned of potential outbreaks of diarrhea, respiratory-tract infections and other communicable diseases in the camps. A team of epidemiologists was on its way to assess that situation, the Pan American Health Organization said.

Offshore, the U.S. Navy hospital ship Comfort was reinforcing its crew to 800 doctors, nurses and medical technicians, increasing its hospital beds to almost 1,000, and boosting its operating rooms from six to 11 in the next few days, the Navy said.

Almost $1 billion in foreign aid has been pledged to help Haiti recover from the quake, and the White House said the U.S. share has climbed to about $170 million.

The U.N. World Food Program said it has delivered at least 1 million rations to about 200,000 people, with each ration providing the equivalent of a daily three meals. In the coming days, it plans to deliver five-day rations to 100,000 people a day, it said. The U.S. military said it was resuming air drops of water and meals into zones secured by U.S. troops.

More than 2,600 U.S. soldiers, Marines and airmen were on the ground, and more than 10,000 sailors and others were offshore. The U.N. was adding 2,000 peacekeepers to the 7,000 already in Haiti, and 1,500 more police to the 2,100-member international force.
