I'm pleased to report that the pre-order technical difficulties have been removed and so now "Gabriel's Redemption" is available for pre-order on Kindle, and in paperback. Gabriel's Redemption - Synopsis

Dear Everyone,

As I mentioned in my last post, the third book in the Gabriel Series is entitled Gabriel's Redemption and it will release on December 3, 2013.

For those of you who missed some of the earlier teasers to the novel, you can find the links here.
Another longer excerpt will be released by my publisher, Berkley, soon.

I'd like to share the synopsis of Gabriel's Redemption with you:

"Professor Gabriel Emerson has left his position at the University of Toronto to embark on a new life with his beloved Julianne. Together, he’s confident that they can face any challenge. And he’s eager to become a father.

But Julianne’s graduate program threatens Gabriel’s plans, as the pressures of being a student become all consuming. When she is given the honor of presenting an academic lecture at Oxford, Gabriel is forced to confront her about the subject of her presentation – research that conflicts with his own. And in Oxford, several individuals from their past appear, including an old nemesis intent on humiliating Julia and exposing one of Gabriel’s darkest secrets.

In an effort to confront his remaining demons, Gabriel begins a quest to discover more about his biological parents, beginning a chain of events that has startling repercussions for himself, Julianne, and his hope of having a family."

I had hoped to be able to reveal the cover to the third book today, but I'm afraid that has been delayed until next Monday, April 22. However, Gabriel's Redemption should be listed for pre-order in both e-book and paperback formats on BarnesandNoble.com this week. It is already available for pre-order on Amazon.

A better title for this post might be "Redemption takes time." As I mentioned recently on Twitter, God may be able to redeem a human being in an instant, but it takes me a couple of hundred pages. (Or more)

I'm pleased to report that my publisher, Berkley, informs me that the release date of "Gabriel's Redemption" will be December 3, 2013. Pre-order information will go up on major online booksellers this week and next, for both ebook and paperback versions.

I've seen the cover and I like it a great deal. I'm confident you'll like it, too.

Gabriel's Inferno - Tentazione e Castigo

Dear Everyone,

It gives me great pleasure to announce the release of the Italian translation of Gabriel's Inferno by Casa Editrice Nord. They also put together a series of quotations from the book and a companion playlist.

Both ebook and hardcover formats are available here and through the publisher. It's already climbing the bestseller charts on Amazon.it and is #1 in their Kindle store.

The Portuguese translation of Gabriel's Rapture will be released in Portugal tomorrow.

To date, the Gabriel series has been translated into Russian, Portuguese, (in both Brazil and Portugal, by different publishers), Spanish, Japanese (Where Gabriel's Inferno is split into two volumes), Polish, andTurkish.

The French translation of Gabriel's Inferno is forthcoming April 18 by Michel Lafon. A Hungarian translation is forthcoming, too, along with Greek, Hebrew, Korean, Croatian, Czech, and Bulgarian.

I look forward to sharing the cover art for Gabriel's Redemption, which releases December 2013, with you soon, as well as an extended excerpt from the novel.

I heard from readers around the world and the result was unanimous - readers like the title "Gabriel's Redemption" for the third and final book in the Gabriel Series.

I'm sure you're eager to hear when "Gabriel's Redemption" will be released.

"Gabriel's Redemption" will be released in December 2013.

Release dates are product of a lot of things - the writer's timeline of finishing the manuscript, the editing process, the publisher's schedule, etc. I wanted the third book to be in your hands in 2013 and so my publisher, Berkley/Penguin, and I agreed on December 2013.

As a reader, I'm interested in novels that are redemptive. As a writer, the element of redemption is essential to the stories I tell. It seemed natural to express that commitment in the title to the last book in the Gabriel series. As always, redemption will play a key role in the novel.

Julia leaned against the kitchen counter and called her husband. The phone rang only twice before he answered.

“Hello, gorgeous.”

She flushed. It never ceased to amaze her how, with a word or two, he could increase her heart rate and cause her skin to heat.

“Hello, handsome. Where are you?”

“Just picking up a few things. Where are you?”

“At home.”

Gabriel paused and Julia could hear the sound of a car door slam.

“You’re home early. I wasn’t expecting you home until six.”

“Professor Marinelli ended her seminar early. I am so tired. I’m just going to head upstairs and take a shower and then I think I’m going to take a nap.”

Julia heard the sound of the Range Rover roar to life as Gabriel started it.

“You do that. I’ll be home soon. See you then.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Julia heard what sounded like a chuckle before Gabriel disconnected. She wondered what he found so funny.

She poked around in the kitchen for a few minutes, noticing that Rebecca hadn’t prepared anything for dinner. She wondered why.

Perplexed, she climbed the stairs to the second floor. She didn’t bother to hang up her clothes, but simply dropped them in the bedroom before entering the shower.

A hot shower would revitalize her after an exhausting day, she was sure.

She’d almost finished her shower when she heard the shower door open.

“Why, hello there.”

Gabriel stood in front of her, naked and smiling. He leaned forward to kiss her.

“Did you need a shower too?” she asked, trying not to ogle him and failing miserably.

“No. I just wanted to be where you are.”

She kissed him again. “Thanks.”

She ran an appreciative hand down the center of his chest to the deep v that bracketed his hips. Then she switched off the water, squeezing the water out of her long, dark hair.

Gabriel swiftly retrieved a towel and handed it to her.

That’s when she noticed the way his eyes were alit in anticipation, his smile growing wider.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“I have a surprise.”

“Oh, really?”

“Think of it as an early Valentine’s gift.”

“I’m listening.” She quickly ran the towel over her body, then wound it over her hair.

Gabriel picked up a glass jar and held it out to her.

“Chocolate body paint,” she read. She glanced up at him. “Now?”

“Now.” He wiggled a small paintbrush under her nose.

“Wow.” She breathed.

“I thought about trying it in the bedroom, but things could get messy.”

He crouched in front of her, his face level with her navel, and opened the jar. He dipped the paintbrush in the chocolate, spreading the confection liberally over the delicate strands of the brush, before winking up at her.

“Shall we begin?”

She nodded, her eyes half closed.

Slowly, he began to draw a heart around her navel.

The feel of the chocolate and the brush gliding across her warm skin caused her to shiver. And of course, despite the fact that it almost tickled, Gabriel would not be rushed.

“There.” He put the jar and brush aside and licked his lips.

“Now comes the fun part. Ready?”

She nodded then reached out a shaking hand to grasp a railing when Gabriel’s tongue made contact with her skin, swirling through the chocolate and dipping into her navel.

Gabriel reached up to steady her by placing one of his large hands across her backside.

“It tastes better than I expected.” He nibbled at her slightly. “But then again, that’s probably because I like how you taste.”

His tongue blazed a trail to her hipbone, where he began placing open-mouthed kisses.

“I think we need more. What do you think?”

“Yes, please.” Julia nodded furiously. “Definitely, more.”

Gabriel picked up the chocolate and the brush.

“Then you’d better hold on tight, darling, because I’m planning to be thorough.”

She leaned forward, cupping his chin.

“As am I, Professor.”

"O Inferno de Gabriel" x Dois

I'm pleased to announce that there are two different Portuguese versions of my novel, "Gabriel's Inferno." Both versions share the title "O Inferno de Gabriel," but each version has a different cover.

One version, by Saida de Emergencia, is now on sale in Portugal and online.

The second version, by Editora Arqueiro, goes on sale Februrary 14 in Brazil and online.

Editora Arqueiro, the Brazilian publisher who is translating my novels into Portuguese, has put together a press release announcing the February release of "O Inferno de Gabriel."

They will be releasing the Portuguese translation of the sequel in July.

As more information becomes available, I'll post it here.

For those waiting for the Spanish translation of my novels, "El Infierno de Gabriel" is already available for pre-order as an e-book and as a paperback. The book will also be for sale in both formats on Amazon.es on January 10.

Many of you have been asking for an update on the third book in the series. Although I don't have a release date yet, I have good news related to the project that I'll be able to announce soon.

2012 was an incredible year.

"Gabriel's Rapture" released in May. Over the summer, both of my novels were picked up by Berkley press, a division of Penguin. The audiobooks were released in the fall and John Michael Morgan, the narrator, brought the novels to life.

I've entered into an agreement with Berkley to write three books. The first book is the third novel in the Gabriel series. I'm writing it now and should have a release date for it soon. The second and third books for Berkley are on subjects to be announced. I'm looking forward to writing them and to sharing details about them with you.

El Infierno de Gabriel

Dear Everyone,

It has been gratifying for me as an author to see my novels translated into other languages. Optimum Kitap has released "Gabriel's Inferno" in Turkish and Esencia is preparing to release the Spanish version of "Gabriel's Inferno" in January and "Gabriel's Rapture" in March.

In preparation for the Spanish publications, Esencia created a trailer for "El Infierno de Gabriel."

The Cover - Auguste Rodin

Dear Everyone,

Several people have asked about the cover artwork of "Gabriel's Inferno." There are three images - the flames, the embracing couple, and the male figure. As a way of celebrating the release of the novel, I thought I'd write a few words about the cover, explaining the significance of the art.

The male protagonist in my book is Gabriel Emerson, a professor of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto. He spends his days teaching and writing about the life and works of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), who is best known for his work The Divine Comedy. The Comedy is divided into three sections: Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise, marking the worlds through which Dante travels beginning on Good Friday in 1300 AD.

The Flames

Steeped as he is in Dante's world, Professor Emerson cannot help but see his own existence in Dantean terms, especially the concepts of sin and punishment. The flames on the cover of the book, along with the title, reflect Gabriel's self-understanding. He sees himself as existing in Hell. Given this view and the journey that he takes through the course of the novel, it seemed appropriate to use images from the Inferno on the cover, especially the flames of Hell.

The Male Figure

In order to explain the significance of the other two images, we need to look at the work of French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Rodin (1840-1917) is perhaps best known for two of his works - The Thinker and The Kiss. What is lesser known is the fact that these sculptures were part of a larger work inspired by the text of Dante's Inferno.

In 1880, Rodin was commissioned to sculpt a monumental door entitled The Gates of Hell.

In the middle of the door, at the top, sits a very familiar figure - The Thinker. But who is the Thinker? For Rodin, it could be Dante, himself, since he later renames the figure The Poet. One could also theorize that The Thinker is one of the inhabitants of Limbo or The Vestibule. Limbo is populated by virtuous persons who died unregenerate. The poet Virgil is part of this group, as is Aristotle, Socrates, and a host of others. For my purposes, I choose to identify The Thinker as Dante.

On the cover of "Gabriel's Inferno," we see a male figure in the top left, who bears some resemblance to Rodin's Thinker, with at least two intriguing differences. Rodin's figure has his hand clenched in a fist underneath his chin, while the figure on the book cover has his hands clasped together. Both figures are contemplative. But the position of the man's hands and his down cast eyes suggest that the man on the cover is doing much more than thinking...

The Lovers

The final image on the book's cover is that of a nude man and woman who are locked in an embrace. The woman's face is turned to the side, her hand disappearing into her lover's hair. The man is hugging her tightly, his mouth hidden in the crook of her shoulder, while his hands caress her back. The embrace is tender but almost desperate. The woman's fingers are tensed in his hair. The man's hands press deeply into her flesh. But they aren't kissing. Perhaps his lips are kissing her shoulder, but we can't tell for sure. He could be whispering to her. He could be simply resting, enjoying their physical connection. He could be weeping.

Once again, in order to explore the significance of this image we need to return to Rodin's sculpture The Gates of Hell. The statue of Paolo and Francesca from The Gates of Hell was later renamed The Kiss. The story of Paolo and Francesca is told by Gabriel Emerson in one of the passages of the novel. In summary, they were guilty of the sin of lust and thus consigned to Hell upon their tragic deaths. Rodin's sculpture captures the passion between the two lovers just as they begin to give in to it, but before their lips connect. The figures are naked and caught in an embrace. Francesca's arm is thrown around Paolo's neck. But although the sculpture is called The Kiss, the couple aren't kissing.

The same can be said for the nude lovers on the cover. They're embracing one another tightly, but they aren't kissing. Although their configuration suggests passion, their image doesn't reflect the fires of lust and wantonness. Their pose is loving, tender, and unlike Rodin's sculpture, there is no space between the man and the woman. One might wonder about the significance of their pose and why it appears both erotic and peaceful...
