Mobile Dictionary is a very early prototype of a dictionary application for S60 devices. Its big advantage is that it's able to use standard dictionaries that can be downloaded for free from freedict.org. The main goal of this project was to work with those dictionaries as a base for possible future projects, so the end user interface as well as the search is not what you might expect of a normal freeware / commercial dictionary application. Nevertheless, it might be worth trying if if you need a simple dictionary that works on standard dictionary files.

Trademark Issues - Free Wii Controller Software Unavailable

Unfortunately, a German company claimed trademark rights for the name MobiPad. Therefore, the non-commercial student project that was provided free of charge had to be temporarily removed. It allowed controlling the whole phone with a Nintendo Wii Remote controller and was available for S60 3rd Edition as well as UIQ3. It was available for download through a dedicated website set up by the students, the Ovi Store and also linked to from symbianresources.com. The project will most likely be renamed, updated and be re-published in due time. Until then, it can no longer obtained from the three channels mentioned above.

HourPower is a small open source application whose sole purpose is to read the current time using the built-in text-to-speech engine of your S60 phone. The next version is nearly finished and will additionally feature an Italian translation thanks to Mauro Rimicci.

The Journey has initially been released in 2004 for Series 60 1.x devices, making it the world's first mobile, location-based adventure game. One of the special facts is that the game doesn't require GPS for playing, but instead uses information about the cellular network to detect the player's movement in his real surroundings - making the game completely free to play. The new version supports S60 3rd as well as S60 5th Edition touch devices (like the popular Nokia 5800 Xpress Music). You can turn into a detective again, no matter which S60 device you own.

Everyone is talking about the iPhone and Android - but in reality, those two systems only account for a tiny fraction of the mobile phone market (currently around 1%). A new set of slides from a recent lecture gives an overview of the currently available smartphone operating systems. This includes the already mentioned platforms, plus the Symbian Foundation, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and Palm OS / Web OS. You will also gain an insight about development for those platforms, as well as services like the popular application stores.

This week, the Java ME course at the University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg ended. All slides and materials have been updated. Especially the introduction has been greatly expanded and now gives an up-to-date overview about the latest developments like the Mobile Service Architecture (MSA) and MIDP 3.0. Additionally, new user interface APIs and concepts are introduced (eSWT, LWUIT, JavaFX Mobile). The part about the Game API now covers more details and contains helpful new examples.

New project: "Car Challenge"

Car Challenge is a 3D car game that uses a novel control method: the magnetometer (compass) of phones like the Nokia 6210 Navigator. In the game, you have to beat your opponent through different weapons like in traditional kart games. Steering is a bit different though: turn in the direction you'd like the car to drive, and it will do so. Face North, the car will drive North. Turn West, and the car follows.

One of the two winning projects of the Forum Nokia Mobila Games Competition 2009 for Universities is the MooLan game from the Mobile Computing department of the Hagenberg University o.A.S.
