The latest Google Chrome update now sets a deadline of July 2018 before it will warn users if a site is insecure.

As part of its new data protection requirement, Chrome requires non-secured websites to convert from HTTP to HTTPS. Users browsing on insecure websites, or those HTTP websites, will see a “Not secure” warning in Chrome’s address bar. This prompt will cause users to leave the website and later on impact other key factors to SEO, lead generation, online sales and many more.

On the brighter side, this change will bring more security to users and site owners moving forward.

How HTTPS works

HTTP, or HyperText Transfer Protocol, is a protocol for passing information between servers and users. On the other hand, HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) is the same as HTTP, save that it’s a secured protocol.

Example of an insecure website

In essence, an HTTP site is more prone to online hacking. It is too risky for clients to share sensitive information if a website is not secured.

Example of a secure website

It is still unclear, however, how Chrome will warn websites with a combination of secure and insecure web pages. If you happen to have this situation, it is always better to take a shift in upgrading your website security.

How this affects your website

Does it improve my ranking on Google?

Yes and no.

Brian Dean, one of the most respected SEO experts, teamed up with SEO companies namely SEMRush, Ahrefs, SimilarWeb, and MarketMuse. Their research is about the impact of HTTPS to a site’s ranking. It showed that it is ‘moderately correlated’ with higher search rankings.

HOWEVER…

This update is beyond improving your SEO. Consider these facts:

Chrome is the second most-used browser in Australia

The revenue in the e-commerce will amount to $11.789M USD in 2018

The ‘Not secure’ prompt will cause users to leave your website – giving you higher bounce rates, sales and leads loss

To know more about the Chrome update, read the full article published by Search Engine Journal.

Manual posting can be a cumbersome daily task for some business owners who juggle day-to-day activities. And finally, after many requests from its users, Hootsuite introduces advance scheduling of posts to save more time.

However, expect that there will be some loopholes in this new feature. For example, those who will schedule posts on Instagram still need to work with a Facebook Marketing Partner or Instagram Marketing Partner.

In a post published by Search Engine Journal, it says that:

This is not a perfect solution, but hopefully it’s the start of something that will be offered more widely. Scheduling posts natively within the Instagram app would be the most accessible solution…

How to use Hootsuite for Instagram

To schedule your Instagram posts on Hootsuite, you must first connect your Instagram account:

Connect your Instagram account by clicking the Profile Icon in the launch menu and select Add a Social Network

Choose Instagram among the options available and enter your credentials

Create your Instagram stream by picking the tab you want to work with and selecting Add Stream

When scheduling and publishing Instagram posts:

Add your text (ie. caption, hashtags and emojis) along with your photo or video in the Compose box

Choose whether to:

Send Now (automatic publishing)

Schedule (select preferred date)

Autoschedule (date scheduled by the tool)

Tap Share to publish your post

Here is a more detailed instruction from Hootsuite

Important note

Using the old Instagram API?

Yes?

If so, you should migrate to the Instagram Graph API so new features will work perfectly. To know more about this announcement, read this article by Search Engine Journal.

As part of its new action plan to serve users better, Facebook rolls out another update to improve your News Feed Update.

This latest update prioritises more meaningful posts and content which leads to less public posts by pages and fewer videos to your news feed. But how will this affect Facebook Business Marketing?

Let’s take a closer look at the algorithm changes that Facebook is rolling out this year.

Facebook Algorithm Update

As mentioned in the Facebook Newsroom, Adam Mosseri, Head of News Feed, shared that:

Over the next few months, we’ll be making updates to ranking so people have more opportunities to interact with the people they care about. Mark outlined this in a post today.

This update will give more importance to posts that engage more people to interact with one another. Reactions, comments and post shares will be the signals for Facebook algorithm to determine how posts should appear.

Mark and his team are making sure to bring people closer together and show them what they truly care about – even if this means showing lesser public content and posts from pages.

How will this update affect Facebook pages?

This update does not mean people won’t see your page posts anymore. It will only impact your traffic and Page reach.

With this changes, expect a decrease to your traffic. However, this effect will vary from Page to Page because of factors like:

type of content delivered to your audience

how audience interact with your post

the relevance of your posts to your audience

Simply put, what you post will still determine if people would love it or not.

To know more about this latest update, read the full article released by Facebook in their Newsroom

In its recent post, Google announced its latest algorithm update for page speed in mobile search that will roll out in July 2018. This update will improve the mobile experience of users and will be one of the ranking factors for mobile searches.

Here are important points to take note of about the ‘Speed Update’:

It will only affect pages with the slowest loading pages

It will only affect a small percentage of search queries

Slow pages with highly relevant content may still rank; thus, search query intent is still considered as a ranking signal

However, there is no available tool to determine if a page is affected by this update. This is why Google encourages everyone to:

… think broadly about how performance affects a user’s experience of their page and to consider a variety of user experience metrics.

Here is the original post as published by Google.

Last year, we have listed 5 ways on how to improve your website visibility on search engines:

Invest in value-adding content

List keywords you want to rank for

Install SEO plugins like Yoast Premium

Update and remarket past blogs

Maximise social media

While these are still an important part of your SEO activities, our list for this year’s trends consists of more technical and competitive approaches.

Nevertheless, these trends are sure-fire ways to keep your momentum up.

In consideration of those who have just heard about SEO, here is a simple explanation. Otherwise, simply jump on to our 2018 list of SEO trends.

What is SEO?

SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimisation. It is a strategy to make your website visible to your audience using a set of selected keywords.

For example, you are an online shop based in Sydney and you are targeting audience looking for party dresses. You must be using keywords such as:

Shop party dress online

Buy party dress online

Cheap party dress

And many more!

There are many sure-fire ways on how to do SEO. The most common example is producing high-quality content that audience will love. In a nutshell, the higher you rank, the easier it is for your audience to find you.

How to improve your website rankings in 2018

Invest in ephemeral content marketing

The rising popularity of Snapchat and Instagram stories gave birth to ephemeral content marketing.

An ephemeral content is:

Short-lived

Lasts only up to 24 hours

It disappears after 24 hours (unless you are able to save a copy)

Yes, it sounds scary! But this strategy is proven effective particularly for Millennials and Generation Z audiences. In fact, Instagram Stories reached 250 Million daily users last year – which led them to introduce Live Video replays.

The short-lived impact of ephemeral content provides you with these advantages:

Sense of urgency that is triggered by FOMO (fear of missing out)

Easily draw the attention of your audience, and the potential ones, by exciting their curiosity to your brand

Become more conscious on who keep track on your brand regularly

Keeping your audience hooked to your brand

Provide a more authentic marketing approach with the rawness of clips and images on your ephemeral content

Boost overall engagement – because ephemeral marketing is the trend today!

Keep in mind that an ephemeral content can be tricky and not always effective for most business types.

For example, businesses taking longer time to generate leads must invest highly in long-lasting content marketing.

In essence, think carefully if this is the right time for you to consider this trend. Assess its relevance to your goals before taking actions.

Creating a mobile-friendly website

You may have heard it before:

That Google is developing its algorithm so websites are more mobile-friendly.

Regardless of the exact percentage of mobile users, almost everyone across the globe is using mobile to search for something online. Whether finding a place to stay or buying gifts online.

That said, this calls for you to make sure that your website looks good on mobile.

The fast-paced changes of audience behaviour on search engines give rise to Google’s mobile-first indexing.

Ready to know more about the mobile-first indexing? Here is a helpful article from Moz.

Will it affect my rankings on search results if my website isn’t mobile-friendly?

Definitely!

Although the result may not be immediate, it will degrade your rankings over time.

Think of it this way:

Audience sees your website.

They exit right away because your website doesn’t look good on their screens.

They visit your competitor’s.

And they keep on coming to your competitor.

End of story.

At the end of the day, it is more than just following Google’s algorithm. It is about giving your audience the best mobile experience.

Structuring rich snippets

Snippets are the information shown when you try to search for topics on Google.

For example, you are looking for a homemade pizza and normally you will see this:

A rich snippet looks like this:

A rich snippet easily captures attention than a normal one. With the audience becoming wiser in selecting websites to visit, they are more likely to click on links with relevant details like ratings, votes, reviews etc.

However, rich snippets are not included in Google’s ranking signal – at least at this point of time.

What it does is improving your traffic which gives your ranking a boost.

But who knows? Maybe soon Google will include this in its ranking factors.

Want to check if your website supports rich snippets? Here is an amazing tool recently developed by Google.

Not yet supporting rich snippets? Ask us how.

Online reviews

Just before 2018 has officially begun, Search Engine Journal wrote that:

Google has been spotted integrating reviews from third party sources in the Knowledge Graph cards for Google My Business listings.

Here is how a Knowledge Graph looks like:

Although this is seen mostly for hotels and resorts for the meantime, it is worth getting online reviews as early as you can. Keep in mind that building your image takes a longer time than imagined. So, utilising time to ask for online reviews is essential to keep your business in the long run.

Voice search

The search patterns of audience are continuously shifting to a more effortless approach.

Take for example the voice search.

Smartphones are engineered to become multi-faceted and more straightforward. Voice search may not be as popular as the normal search behaviour of audience. But the constant revolution in technology will pick up its momentum in the future.

In fact, 1 out of 5 searches is from voice queries.

So, where do we go from here?

The rising popularity of voice search encourages marketers to become more customer-focused than ever.

Here is a simple explanation to that:

Voice search users are most likely to use natural language rather than taking shortcuts – just like how we do it sometimes directly on search engines.

Voice searching has a conversational approach. It is as if you are asking a friend where you should go for a cup of tea or cheap hotels in Sydney.

But this time, you are talking to an AI.

Website speed

We’ve all heard it before.

But this trend has something to do with the mobile-first indexing that Google is boiling in the pot right now.

The most common problem websites encounter on their mobile version is keeping up with the speed. Apart from making sure that your website is mobile responsive, the speed is also an important factor you should look at.

If you are an online shop, you do not want customers leaving your website before they even purchased a product. Poor speed prompts your audience to switch to your competitor – which is a loss on your part.

As an effect:

Google places you to a lower ranking if this happens too often.

So, regardless your website has a clean design and you offer better products than your competitors, it can go to nothing if you keep your customers waiting.

Using WordPress for your website? Follow these steps below to improve your speed:

Purchase and download the zip file of WP Rocket plug-in

For automatic installation:

Log in to your WordPress admin panel

On the left sidebar, go to Plugin

Select Add New and click on Upload Plugin

Select the WP Rocket zip file

Click on Install Now and the ‘Yes’ button afterwards

For manual installation, it is best to ask for our assistance

Note: After activation, go to your settings panel. An automatic email will be sent to inform you that a new website is added to your account.

Website security

The most important trend everyone must take seriously.

Last year, we advised our valued clients to purchase their SSL Certificates to make their websites more secured.

How to know if my website is secured? Look for this:

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL is an abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer. It provides a secure and encrypted communications between websites and internet browsers. It is installed on website pages for the safety of users who submit sensitive information such as passwords, personal information, credit card etc.

What’s in it for me?

Just look at these benefits when you have your website secured:

Secure connection to users sharing personal data

Prevents hackers from intercepting data

Increased rankings

Be prepared for more changes by Google in terms of security

Steps on how to install an SSL Certificate to your website:

1. Go to this link

3. Find ‘Standard SSL $69 per year and click the “Order Now” button

4. Provide your web developer with the reference number for installation

The holiday season is here and everyone’s rushing to get the best deal of the year. If you are a Marketer or a Business Owner, this is the best opportunity to take advantage of the Christmas Frenzy. Social media is one of the best ways to do this. Make sure that your strategy will not lead into a holiday nightmare. Here are few tips for you.

The holiday season is here and everyone’s rushing to get the best deal of the year. The yuletide season will intensify the use of social media with personal greetings by friends and loved ones from other places. This is the best opportunity for everyone to take advantage of the Christmas Frenzy — especially in implementing these social media best practices:

1. Choose the right social media channel

Using social media is essential but it needs to be carefully managed on a regular basis. If your business is advertising on more than three social media channels, you may want to take a look at the engagement on each account and cut down on the less active channels. This will give you more time to focus on monitoring your Ads and interacting with your audience.

2. Advertise promotions which are only available on social media

To engage your audience on your social media channels, offer deals that can only be acquired on social media. Create Fan-Only content in your Ads, but, be careful as some social media channels such as Facebook have banned or don’t appreciate like-gating promotions.

Focus on the interaction to at least two social media sites. Utilise the CTA buttons in your Ads and avoid phrases that can cause your Ads to lose an audience.

Bonus tip: Having a 12-days-of-Christmas promotion idea is one of the trendiest gimmicks done by most businesses. Make sure that yours is consistent across all social media platforms so your branding this season will become more memorable.

3. Offer Free shipping or free giveaways

Who wouldn’t want a great giveaway deal or free shipping? Offering small perks that don’t eat into the profit margin can generate more sales especially during seasons like this and differential your business with your unique sales proposition.

4. Use images and videos that appeal your audience

People hate wordy posts.

In a recent report from HubSpot, people are more likely to remember 65% of the information, three days after the promotion, when an image is present. It is also interesting to note that images that are posted on Facebook via Instagram integration receive higher engagement rate. Here is a detailed presentation of BuzzSumo.

On the other hand, 76.5% marketers and small business owners have claimed that video marketing gave a direct impact on their business. This is because most consumers prefer watching a video about products rather than reading lengthy posts.

In other words, people find it more appealing to click and view images or videos on social media. So make sure your Ads are visually appealing to increase your chances of gaining attraction.

5. Offer customised services

Show you care by sending personalised Christmas or thank you eCards. Look after your existing customers, as these are the ones most likely to recommend you to their peers and be an advocate for your services.

6. Provide exceptional customer service

Look for unique ways to deliver exceptional service that makes your business stand out.Take a small amount of time to go the extra mile. For instance, Facebook Live is a powerful way to create a solid rapport between you and your customers. Surely, these people will remember you for remembering them on their special day.

This holiday season, systEmise offers you an opportunity to personalise your season’s greetings to your clients.

Only few weeks to go before Christmas! Send your clients a Christmas e-card now. Click here to select from our template or let systEmise create a personalised image – how about a Cartoon Card of your team?

Here is an important thing you should know about lead generation:

44% of B2B marketers have generated leads through LinkedIn

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This number puts LinkedIn on the top of the list – with Facebook and Twitter coming behind respectively.

It’s a common trend to include social media in every marketing strategy to achieve goals in the most effective way. As a matter of fact, social media marketing is now a standard for all organisations.

Online marketing is such a huge map to be laid out and there’s just so many branches – and sub-branches – underneath.

With all that said, we will be discussing how to use LinkedIn so you generate new B2B leads. And here’s the catch – YOU DON’T NEED TO SPEND SOME BUCKS! All you need to do is follow the tips below.

So, let’s get started!

Lead generation using your company page

Have you ever thought of using your company page to generate leads?

We often overlook at the power of simple things such as the description section of your profile, what you do as a business, and other fields where you put all the facts about your business. You may have done these simple things, but one question remains:

Is it compelling?

A compelling company page does not only include important details your audience needs to know. It has to be explained cleverly. Take a look at Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts business page:

The first sentence already creates a connection – which is the best way to pitch a business. Most of the people do not stay long when a page looks boring and less interesting.

Engage users quickly to raise their interest in tapping you as their partner. When they become interested, that is when they begin digging deeper until trust is built. When trust is built, everything else follows.

Another thing to consider, carefully select your profile photo. Remember that it serves as your brand, so make sure that when people see this, they know right away what your business does and what’s in it for them.

Publish content

When publishing content, it isn’t only about sharing good insights. Sometimes, the least useful topics are the most trending ones.

LinkedIn is a professional site – that’s a fact. But let’s admit that it can be boring when things get too formal – that’s why you need to do it in a tone that engages with your audience, but without compromising your professional image.

A great content is:

engaging (with the use of images, infographics, and other visual materials)

contains relevant links to credible resources

consistent from the beginning up to the end

valuable to business processes

timely and rational, and

worth sharing

So, why do you need to invest in content publishing?

It allows you to sell products and/or offer services either directly or indirectly, aggressively or passively – depending on your marketing strategy. A lot of marketers use the power of content marketing to promote their brands by showing expertise in their niche.

Just imagine how far your business can go when everyone knows about your business. Social media is a word-of-mouth marketing, the cheapest form of all.

Create groups and join discussions

Creating a LinkedIn group – or joining others – allows you to:

research further what the market demands

initiate discussions to bring potential leads together

build your reputation and network

see new opportunities

listen to the advice and any constructive criticism from others, and

become more socially responsible by catering needs – and beyond

After building a solid connection with your leads, they are more likely to invite their friends to join the discussion. Now that’s a great way to keep the leads coming in.

Bonus tip: Mentioning people might be helpful during discussions. Your audience will love it!

Advanced search tools

Did you know that you can also use LinkedIn search tool for prospecting clients and partners?

Yes – and you can do it with the Advanced Search feature of LinkedIn. This allows you to customise your search by filtering:

the levels of connection

use a set of preferred keywords

location

connections of those leads connected with you

title

current companies

industries

and many more!

If YouTube was a country, it will come as the 3rd largest next to China and India.

Through video marketing, many marketers have run successful marketing campaigns. Every month, over 3 billion people around the world visit YouTube to watch various videos – from DIY to mind-blowing trivial facts. It is considered as the 2nd largest search engine, next to Google which became its owner since 2006. With that in mind, the number of marketers who include video marketing as part of their strategy has grown rapidly.

Why you should consider video marketing as part of lead generation strategies

74% of consumers are more likely to purchase after watching a video of your product. Interestingly, adding videos to lead generation pages can increase your conversion up to 80%. The population of people who are visually enticed is greater than those who take time reading.

It can easily establish rapport and build trust. Videos ignite emotions because it tells a straightforward story. For instance, demonstrating the functionalities of a product suggests a more realistic approach. As the adage says, “To see is to believe.”

People heavily use mobile to watch videos. It comes handy and easier for them to access new information about everything they could type on the small screen. Not to mention the fast-paced improvements of smartphones today (ie. HD phones).

Video can easily explain everything – not to mention that it’s easier to share too!

Best Practices for Web Video Marketing

Without further ado, let’s talk about the best practices for your very first or next video marketing:

The 10-second rule

It all happened to us – clicking the ‘Skip Ad’ button whenever an ad pops before the YouTube video you search for shows. Just like those ads you skipped, it can also happen to you.

You have 10 seconds to grab the attention of your audience. Depending on your niche, give it an x-factor and worth every second. It is the most challenging part so take time writing a captivating story for your audience.

Do not sell. Tell a story

People can easily tell if you are just selling a product for the sake of doing so. And unfortunately sometimes, despite conveying such a strong message, it still won’t sell to them.

It is your job to know their backgrounds, behaviour and their interests so you can easily connect with them. An inducing story has a big impact on a buyer’s decision – because they can see your product or service as a value-adding experience.

Educate your audience

This applies best for when introducing your latest product. A print ad may do less to increase your product awareness. The power of video becomes more effective if you give the audience a deeper view of your product. For instance, smartphone manufacturers publish a demo on their YouTube channels. In other cases, some businesses are posting a behind-the-scene video – how products are created or how they provide the best services to customers.

Keep in mind that because information is more accessible, people are now keen to learn as much as they could.

Optimise titles and descriptions

The most important component to your SEO strategy. Just like when posting articles, include relevant keywords in the title and description of your videos. Remember that YouTube is owned by Google, therefore, you can easily get the logic. For the description, the ideal number of words is between 300 to 400.

Don’t forget to add links to your channel. Links to your other social media platforms and your website so that your viewers can easily connect with you and visit your site.

Note: Don’t forget to optimise it for mobile! Ask us to know how to improve your SEO for YouTube.

Include Cards on your marketing campaign

Unfortunately, YouTube has taken down annotations because they haven’t been effective for mobile anymore. The good news is, YouTube has rolled out its new feature, Cards.

These are notifications appearing on the screen you can use to keep the audience engagement ongoing. To know how to use Cards, go here.

Always put your branding

You have a compelling story. Your video is well-optimised including those Cards you put on your videos. But have you included your brand logo?

As important as your video’s message, do not forget to include your brand logo. This is not only for your branding, but also, it avoids competitors or anyone else from republishing your video without permission. The placement of brand logo depends on the type of your video. Make sure that it is appropriately placed either at the beginning or at the end.

How to improve SEO through YouTube

Here is our top 5 tips on how to improve your website visibility by optimising your YouTube channel:

Use the right video keywords

Promote it to your website and other social media accounts
