Know to create an all-in-one Windows 7 install disk

With the help of the WinAIO Maker Professional tool you can make a master copy of your Windows 7 disk that contains all the available editions.

You are probably tired of carrying around multiple editions of Microsoft Windows 7 when servicing PCs for your clients or users. Instead, make a master copy of your Windows 7 disk that contains all the editions you need. It’s simple, really. All it takes is a quick tool download, a disk rip, a setup modification, and a save to a DVD or thumb drive.
Every Windows 7 install disk includes all the editions of the operating system, the editions not pertinent to the purchased copy are merely hidden from view. For that reason, one disk from any edition (Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) will suffice for this procedure. However, if you want to combine x86 and x64 versions of Windows 7 together as well, you must have disks for both x86 and x64 versions of Windows 7 handy.

WinAIO Maker Professional

To begin, download the WinAIO Maker Professional tool. Extract the zip archive and launch the program accordingly. You will be presented with the following window (Figure A) as your main interface.

Proceed by inserting your Windows 7 disk into your DVD-ROM drive, then click the DVDToISO button, select your ISO Export path as well as disk drive, and, finally, click the Start button (Figure B). Repeat this step if you wish to incorporate a second architecture, such as x86, into the all-in-one installer. Just be sure to give the resulting ISO another filename to differentiate it from the other rip.

Now we are going to extract the ISO contents to a separate directory in order to gain access to the install.wim file, which we need to modify (Figure C). Simply click the ISO2Folder button, select the newly created ISO and a destination directory for the extracted files, then click Extract. Once again, if you intend to incorporate an alternative architecture, repeat this process, only this time selecting a different folder for a destination.

With the ISO extracted, click the Select WIMs button in the main window, open the directory containing the ISO dump, open the Sources directory, and select the install.wim file. This will populate a list of Windows 7 editions for you to see (Figure D). If there are editions you do not wish to include on the all-in-one disk, select any image from the list and click the Delete Image button.
Once you are satisfied with everything, be sure to click the Save All Changes button at the top to begin processing your custom wim file. This might take a few minutes. After processing, select Yes when prompted to clean all *.cfg and *.clg files.

Select the editions you wish to include on your all-in-one-disk.

Now for the grand finale, click the Save All into ISO button to begin generating the final product for burning to DVD (Figure E). Be sure to type in a name within the Label field and choose a destination for said ISO file. Once you click Make ISO, kick back and relax as the ISO file builds.
Upon completion, you can burn the ISO file to disk using Windows 7’s image burner (or any other CD/DVD burning software if you are on XP or Vista operating systems).

Alternatively, if you wish to create an all-in-one Windows 7 installer thumb drive, use the WinToUSB option instead from the main window. Have a freshly formatted USB drive plugged in and select it as well as the source folder for your custom all-in-one installer in order to proceed.

Recently I was building a Citrix Xenserver test lab to create a Citrix XenApp farm. During the build process, I ran into difficulty several times with the order and steps necessary to make the systems available via RDP instead of the Citrix XenCenter console. It isn’t the easiest or clearest build process to set up a Citrix XenApp server as a VM in Xenserver. You’ve got a lot of little details you’ve got to get right — and the default build of W2k8 and W2k3 has some additional initial steps you’ve got to go through before it’ll open it up for RDP connections. This is all compounded by the fact that you’ve got to get the Xentools installed correctly and get the right .net framework installed prior to installing Presentation Server on your Windows base build.
Additionally, I’m not on the most robust test server for this build (a Dell PowerEdge T110 tower quad core with 4GB of ram). I’m also introducing myself to setup, configuration and administration of XenApp with this lab. My lead Citrix engineer is assisting me when I hit snags, but he has his regular job to keep him busy. Altogether, it has made it a relatively difficult lab for me to get running. This lab is built off our main LAN — and it replicates the naming policy of our production network so I have to be careful to ensure that it remains isolated. In order to get online to download updates and components, I am using our public guest network — and I’ve got the host machines and VMs configured with non-routable IP addresses. I’ve changed the IP range a couple of times as I’ve built the machines.
Because of all of this complexity, getting these machines up and running has been a start and stop process with several sets of frustrations along the way. We’ve kind of cheated and bent the rules at a couple of points; for example, we did not create a SQL server to house the database because of the limited hardware resources on the Xenserver, and we created the original set of XenApp VMs as a workgroup, without a domain controller. We encountered strange behavior with this model. Among the problems was getting the machines into Terminal Server mode and reachable from my lab console where I am running XenCenter (a Lenovo laptop). I missed steps during the configuration and initial Windows update process and the Firewall was left enabled on one VM. The other had a similar issue. After all was said and done, we still had problems with one of the Citrix servers being registered correctly in the farm, and my engineer told me I should just create a domain rather than a workgroup so I would be working with something more similar to a production model. Rather than build a server up from scratch, I borrowed a VM image from another engineer’s lab that was already set up as a DC.
After importing the image I logged in and found that this engineer uses a different password than our normal test-lab password. I’m okay with that in general principle, but I had to wait until I could talk to that engineer to get the correct password. He was out for a couple of days, then very busy, so my project got put on the back-burner. When I returned to it and had him change the password so I could get into the machine, I found that it also failed to connect via RDP once I had it all set up. I could only access the machine from the XenCenter.

A second set of eyes is often all it takes

Frustrated, I went in to My Computer properties to enable Remote Desktop, but it was already enabled. Normally my next step would be to go into security or services and ensure that the Windows firewall was disabled, but my intuition told me that this wasn’t the problem in this case. Puzzled, I went to another engineer who works daily with AD and W2kX domain controllers and asked him to come fix my problem for me. I figured I was just rusty from too much time behind a desk and not enough time hands-on working daily as a forward engineer (which is undoubtedly part of the problem). He came in, sat down, and of course, his first step was to do exactly what I had just tried. “Get out of my way and let someone who knows what they’re doing fix this probl- er… wait, Remote Desktop is activated.”
He asked, “What is the IP address this machine is assigned,” and opened a command prompt to run an ipconfig - and that is when it hit me.
My previous issues and challenges had put me in a mindset where I was approaching the problem with a particular bias on what the solution was. I was applying previous experience specific to this particular lab and not attacking this issue as a separate, unique challenge. I was mistaking cause for correlation.
This was a great example that reaffirms some of the concepts and skills I constantly stress with my team and that all successful IT engineers should constantly revisit.

Do not mistake cause for correlation.
Do not assume that past experience is any indication for resolving current issues.
Seek out another set of eyes when you’re experiencing issues.
Be humble in understanding that asking for help is not the sign of an inexperienced engineer; it is the sign of an experienced one.

It turned out that the issue was that the image I had used to import the DC had an IP on a different subnet assigned to it. It was a simple and logical mistake that was easy to overlook. Having another engineer come in and look at the box and ask a simple question instantly provided me the solution. I felt silly and a little stupid that I had overlooked such an obvious mistake - but I would have felt far worse if I had sat trying to troubleshoot the issue by myself for any length of time. My mindset was oriented toward chasing down the wrong set of causes based on my previous experiences - and that is a very common mistake for IT employees to make when troubleshooting. It doesn’t matter if you’re at the help-desk or enterprise engineering, everyone who works in IT eventually encounters a situation like this. I’ve been on both sides, too. I’ve been the engineer barking up the wrong tree, and I’ve been the engineer that pointed a co-worker in the direction that helped resolve their trouble.
Sometimes it is the soft skills that are most important to being successful in this industry. We spend a lot of time focusing on the technical knowledge and training. A comprehensive knowledge of a platform isn’t going to help you avoid spinning your wheels over an issue like this, though. Having both the hard and soft skills is the difference between being stuck in a position and being a star performer who is recognized in your organization and among your peers.

Attack Vectors

An attacker could inject malicious code in an HTTP response or host a specially crafted website containing malicious code, forcing the browser to execute this malicious code. This is a required condition in order to exploit this vulnerability. The attacker needs to be able to intercept this HTTPS traffic in order to exploit this vulnerability in SSL, resulting in the possibility to decrypt portions of the encrypted traffic (for example, authentication cookies).

• TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2, and all cipher suites that do not use CBC mode are not affected.

We all know how important it’s to create a system restore point before making any changes to the operating system. For those who are not familiar with this handy feature, restore points allow users to restore the system to an earlier state in a jiffy.

While options are available to create a manual system restore point, Windows doesn’t offer a quick way to create restore points. Here are four free tools that help you crate, manage, and explore restore points with a few mouse clicks. All these tools are free and compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.

1. Single Click Restore Point (SCRP): Single Click Restore Point is tiny utility for creating quick restore points. As the name suggests, all that needs to create a system restore point is a single click. Run the tool to automatically create a restore point. This utility has no user interface. In this article I will give you a high level overview of the ISA Server 2006 HTTP Filter. I will show how to use this HTTP Filter to protect your internal network from some types of attacks in Webserver Publishing scenarios. We will also see how to prevent users from using the Universal Firewall Bypass protocol (HTTP) to bypass the Firewall for network traffic like Microsoft Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or othes that have a function to use HTTP instead of their native protocols. To fully understand the concept and technologies of the HTTP protocol I would suggest reading this article.

Let’s start with some basics about the Webfilter in ISA Server 2006.

What is a Webfilter

A Webfilter in ISA Server 2006 is a set of Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) which are based on the IIS ISAPI (Internet Server Application Programming Interface) Model.
Webfilter in ISA Server 2006 will be loaded from the Webproxy Filter. If the Webfilter is loaded, all information will be forwarded to the Webproxy Filter. The Webproxy Filter is responsible for determining which type of events should be monitored. Each time such events occur the Webproxy Filter will be notified.
The following figure shows the HTTP Filter Add-in from ISA Server 2006.

Webfilter functionality

The Webfilter in ISA Server 2006 is responsible for the following tasks:

Scanning and modifying HTTP requests
Analyzing network traffic
Scanning and modifying HTTP responses
Blocking of specific HTTP responses
Data encryption and compression

and many more.
Important:The HTTP Filter in ISA Server 2006 is rule specific except for the Maximum Header length setting. The Maximum Header length is the same for all Firewall rules with HTTP protocol definitions.
Attention:The HTTP Filter in ISA Server 2006 is also capable of filtering HTTPS traffic but only in reverse web server publishing scenarios where HTTPS Bridging is used. If you want to use outgoing HTTPS inspection through ISA Server 2006 HTTP filter you have to use third party software.

HTTP Filter configuration

If you want to start configuring the HTTP filter, right click a rule that contains an HTTP protocol definition and select Configure HTTP from the context menu.

Maximum Headers length (bytes):
The maximum Header length specifies the maximum number of bytes in the URL and HTTP Header for an HTTP request until ISA Server blocks the request.
Request Payload:
Maximum payload length (bytes):
With this option it is possible to restrict the maximum length in bytes a user can send via an HTTP POST in a Web server publishing scenario.
URL-Protection:
Maximum URL Length (Bytes): The maximum length of an allowed URL
Maximum Query length (Bytes): The maximum length of a URL in the HTTP request
Verify normalization
You can select this checkbox to specify that requests with URLs containing escaped characters after normalization will be blocked. Normalization is the process where URL coded requests will be decoded. After decoding the URL the URL will be normalized again to be sure that no process is using the % character to encode a URL. If the HTTP Filter finds a difference in the URL after the second normalization, the requests will be rejected.
Block High bit character
URLs that contain Double Byte Characters (DBCS) or Latin1 will be blocked if this setting is active. An active setting regulary blocks languages that require more than eight bits to display all language specific characters.
Executables
Block responses containing Windows executable content. This option blocks the download and executing of executable content like EXE files.
Next we should configure the allowed or blocked HTTP methods.

In this example we are blocking the HTTP POST command so that nobody can upload content on external websites.

With this option it is possible to block or allow some specific file extensions in the specific Firewall rule.

Block requests containing ambiguous extensions

This option instructs the HTTP filter to block all file extensions which ISA Server 2006 cannot determine.
In this example we are blocking access to the .EXE file extension.

HTTP Header handling

When a web client sends requests to a web server or the Web server is answering queries, the first part of an answer is an HTTP request or an HTTP response. After the HTTP request or HTTP response, the client or Server sends an HTTP Header. The request Header field allows the client to send additional information to the server. HTTP Header contains information about the Browser, operating system information, and authorization details and more. The client Header uses the attribute User-Agent which determines which application is responsible for the request.
With the help of the HTTP filter it is possible to block specific HTTP Headers.

The settings in the Server Header field give Administrators the control to remove the HTTP header from the response or to modify the HTTP Header in the response and some other settings.
In the following example we are using the HTTP Header feature in ISA Server 2006 to block Kazaa, information of which resides in the request header.

HTTP Filter signatures

An HTTP signature can exist in the HTTP body or HTTP header. You can use HTTP signatures to deny the execution from specific applications. To find a specific HTTP signature you must know which signature the application is using. There are some documents on the Internet that can give you some information about specific HTTP signatures but it is also possible to use a network sniffer to determine HTTP signatures. I will show you how to use a network sniffer later in this article.
Important:Filtering HTTP signatures in ISA Server 2006 only works when the requests and responses are UTF-8 coded.

Important:ISA Server 2006 inspects only the first 100 Bytes of the request and response body. It is possible to expand the maximum number of bytes but this can result in some Server performance degradation.

How to discover specific HTTP Headers

To determine HTTP signatures that are unknown to you, it is possible to use a network sniffer like Windows Netmon 3.0 to trace the HTTP network traffic.
The following frigure shows a sample network trace output from Microsoft Netmon 2.0, but you can use any other Network monitor like Wireshark (former Ethereal).

This example shows the request type (GET), the HTTP request Header (HTTP/1.1) the User-Agent (Mozilla/4.0) and the signature (MSIE 6.0).

This security update resolves one publicly disclosed vulnerability and three privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft .NET Framework. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege if an unauthenticated attacker sends a specially crafted web request to the target site. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take any action in the context of an existing account on the ASP.NET site, including executing arbitrary commands. In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be able to register an account on the ASP.NET site, and must know an existing user name.

Know To Customize MMC with the Remote Desktops Snap-in Windows 7

The Remote Desktops Snap-in is a part of the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1 package that is available for download from the Microsoft Download site. As you might have surmised from the name, the majority of the tools in the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1 are designed to allow IT administrators to manage Windows Server 2003 and 2008 systems. However, the Remote Desktops Snap-in is a useful tool for anyone who uses Remote Desktop Connection in Windows 7.

System Requirements

The Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1 can be installed only on the Enterprise, Professional, or Ultimate editions of Windows 7 SP1. Also, keep in mind that there are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1, so be sure and select the correct download.

Installation

The Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1 download is named after a Windows Software Update: Windows6.1-KB958830-x86-RefreshPkg.msu; so it appears differently from a regular download package. In fact, once you launch the installation procedure you’ll be prompted to install a Windows software update, as shown in Figure A. However, there’s no need to worry — this is simply an update to the Remote Server Administration Tools.

The installation begins by asking if you want to install a Windows software update.

Once the package is installed on your system, you will use Windows 7’s Programs and Features to install the tools that you want to use. To begin, click the Start button and type Programs and Features in the search box. When the Programs and Features shortcut appears in the results list, select it and press [Enter].
You’ll then see the Programs and Features window and will need to select Turn Windows Features On or Off, as shown in Figure B. When the Windows Features dialog box appears, scroll down the list and expand the Remote Server Administration Tools branch. Then, select Remote Desktop Services Tools check box, as shown in Figure C. Then, click OK.

You’ll find the Remote Desktop Services Tools when you expand the Remote Server Administration Tools branch.

Launching the Remote Desktops Snap-in

At this point, you may find a shortcut to Remote Desktops on the Start menu or you may find the Remote Desktops shortcut on the All Programs | Administrative Tools menu. Either way, you can also access Remote Desktops by clicking the Start button and typing Remote Desktops in the search box.
In addition, keep in mind that Remote Desktop Services Tool actually includes two snap-ins:

Remote Desktops and
Remote Desktop Services Manager

Therefore, you can add them to a custom MMC if you want. (I’ll examine the Remote Desktop Services Manager snap-in in more detail in a future blog post.)
Once the Remote Desktops console launches, it will be ready for you to begin adding your Remote Desktop connections, as shown in Figure D.

To add your connections, simply right-click on the Remote Desktops icon and select the Add New Connection command, as shown in Figure E. Then, when you see the Add New Connection dialog box, fill in the computer name or IP address and the logon information like I did in Figure F.

Making connections

After you have added your Remote Desktop connections, you can connect to any one or all of the systems that you have added to the Remote Desktops console. Keep in mind that the default screen size setting is set to Expand to Fill MMC Result Pane. Therefore, you’ll want to maximize the Remote Desktops console and may even want to resize the right pane so that it doesn’t use any more screen space than is necessary to display the names of your connections. (To change the screen size setting, select the Properties command from the context menu and then choose the Screen Options tab.)
To make a connection, right-click on the name of a system and select the Connect command, as shown in Figure G. You’ll then see the remote system in the window, as shown in Figure H. And, best of all you can connect to multiple systems at the same time and easily switch between them, as shown in Figure I.

System Admin's should know Windows Server 2008 Netsh commands

Introduction

I have written a number of different Netsh articles and other authors have published their own Netsh articles. This just shows how important and innovative Netsh really is. In this article, I will cover 10 Netsh commands that every Windows admin should know. In my opinion. Netsh is so powerful and flexible; I cannot choose the “most important” Netsh commands as the importance of a command will vary from admin to admin. What I can do is to choose the 10 commands that I feel will either show you valuable information or will help you out when you are in trouble. Keep in mind that these commands can be scripted (as they are all command line tools) so whatever you can do with just an individual command on a single machine, you could write a script to perform that command on all machines in your network.

What is Netsh?

Microsoft Windows Netsh is a command line scripting utility. With Netsh, you can view or change the network configuration of your local computer or a remote computer. You can manually run Netsh commands or you can create batch files or scripts to automate the process. Not only can you run these commands on your local computer but also on remote computers, over the network.
Netsh also provides a scripting feature that allows you to run a group of commands in batch mode against a specified computer. With netsh, you can save a configuration script in a text file for archival purposes or to help you configure other computers.
Netsh is not “new” with Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista. Netsh has been around for a long time. Netsh commands are available in Windows 2000, XP, and Windows Server 2003. What is new are a number of options for Netsh with Windows Server 2008 and Vista. Additionally, I feel that Netsh is underutilized by admins and most admins are not aware of the new Windows Server 2008 and Vista Netsh enhancements. It is my hope to educate Windows admins about the new netsh features and the power of netsh in this article.

What is different about Windows Server 2008 netsh vs. Windows XP?

There are a number of differences even at the core command level between the Windows XP version of netsh and the Windows Server 2008 netsh. To compare these, I ran “netsh /?” in each operating system. While Windows XP has “routing” listed as a context and Windows Server 2008 does not, that is the only context that Win 2008 lacks (and that is included in the Win 2008 RAS context). Otherwise, Windows Server 2008 has the following netsh context options available that Windows XP does not:

dhcp
dhcpclient
http
ipsec
lan
nap
netio
rpc
winhttp

Thus, as you can see, there are many more “context” / options available in Window Server 2008.
With no more delay, let’s get started with our Netsh top 10 Netsh commands that every admin should know.

#10 – How to get help

Every Windows admin should know how to get guided help with netsh. This is easy – just use the “/?” command to be guided through what you are trying to do. For example, to show all netsh contexts (categories of options), just type: netsh /?

From there, you can select a context and be guided through configuring or showing options in that context. For example, say that I typed netsh lan /?, I would see:

From there, I can continue with the guided help by doing-
netsh lan show /?
And, from there, I would see that I can show interfaces with-
netsh lan show interfaces
Being able to guide yourself through the many netsh commands using /? is a very valuable skill.

#9 – Supplying remote machine names and credentials

If you run netsh /? you will see that you can supply the remote machine name & IP address and credentials for the remote machine you will run netsh against. The options are “-r” for the machine, “-u” for the username, and “-p” for the password. Here is an example:
netsh -r WinXP-1 -u winxp-1\administrator -p My!Pass1 interface ip show config
As you can see, I supplied the remote machine name, remote username, and password which allowed me to perform this command over the network. You can perform any of the commands shown here over the network as long as the remote machine supports that command (different operating systems will use different variations of commands).

#8 – Run Netsh in interactive mode or with a script

Netsh can be run either interactively (just you typing commands manually) or when using scripting. Say that you wanted to manually step through some commands on your local machine or remote machine. You could just start by typing netsh at the command line and you would see:
netsh>
From there, you can enter all the netsh commands you want, or even tell netsh to connect to a remote machine with set machine.
On the other hand, you could use netsh –f <scriptfile> and specify a script that netsh would use.

#7 – Open a port on your firewall

With netsh, you can quickly and easily open a port on your firewall if you know the right command. Here is an example of opening port 445-

netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable

If the command was successful, you should get a response of “Ok.”

#6 – Export your current network configuration to a file and import it

With netsh, exporting and importing your IP address configuration is easy – unlike in the GUI interface. To export your configuration, just do:
netsh –c interface dump > test.txt

Later on this machine or on a different machine, you could import this configuration with-
netsh –f test.txt

#5 – Try out the latest Netsh uses

As mentioned above, there are a lot of new features in Windows Server 2008 as it pertains to netsh.
Here are the new categories that I see on my Windows Server 2008 system:

dhcp
dhcpclient
http
ipsec
lan
nap
netio
rpc
winhttp

For example, you can configure not only your DHCP client but also your DHCP server. You can configure IPSec encryption, the network access protection (NAP) client, and many more!
As you add other roles & features to your server, you will have additional contexts available to you. For example, if you add the network policy server to Windows Server 2008, you will have “nps” as a net netsh context that can be configured.

#4 – TCP/IP troubleshooting and interface resets

There are a number of things you can do with netsh to troubleshoot and reset your TCP/IP network interface. Here are some examples:

Reset all IP protocol stack configurations on your interface and send the output to a log file- netsh int ipv4 reset resetlog.txt
Install the TCP/IP protocol- netsh int ipv4 install
UnInstall the TCP/IP protocol- netsh int ipv4 uninstall

#3 – Configure the Windows Advanced Firewall

In my previous article, How to Configure Windows 2008 Advanced Firewall with the NETSH CLI, I discussed how you can now configure the new Windows advanced (bi-directional) firewall using the new advfirewall networking context settings using netsh in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista. Of course, you can also configure the traditional Windows firewall. Here are some examples:

Show all firewall rules - netsh advfirewall firewall show rule name=all
Delete an inbound advanced firewall rule for port 21 - netsh advfirewall firewall delete name rule name=all protocol=tcp localport=21
Export Windows Advanced Firewall settings - netsh advfirewall export “c:\advfirewall.wfw”

Perhaps the most common command you might use is the command to enable or disable your Windows firewall, like this:
netsh firewall set opmode disable
or
netsh firewall set opmode enable
However, for more specific information & examples, please see my article, above.

#2 – Configure Wireless Settings

I discussed how you can now configure wireless networking context settings using netsh in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista. Here are some examples:

Connect to an already defined wireless network- netsh wlan connect ssid=”mySSID” name=”WLAN-Profil1”
Show your current wireless settings - netsh wlan show settings
Add an already exported wireless network profile - netsh wlan add profile filename="Wireless Network Connection-BOW.xml"

However, for more specific information, please see my article, above.

#1 – Configure your IP Address & Network interface settings

As netsh is the “network shell”, what better way to use it than to configure your basic network settings? Here are some examples:

Show your IP address - netsh interface ip show config
Set an interface to use DHCP for its IP address configuration - netsh interface ip set address name="Local Area Connection" source=dhcp
Set an interface to use a static IP address for its IP address configuration - netsh interface ip set address "Local Area connection" static 10.0.0.9 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 1
Or, add a DNS Server entry – netsh interface ip add dnsserver "Local Area Connection" 10.0.0.1

1. To Log on to another Administrator account.
NOTE: If you do not have another Administrator account, then proceed to step 2.

A) Go to OPTION ONE or OPTION TWO.
OR

2. To Boot into Safe Mode and Use the built-in Administrator account
NOTE: You may not need to enable the built-in Administrator account. If this was the only normal administrator account you had, then Safe Mode should automatically boot into the built-in Administrator account.

A) Boot into Safe Mode (in Vista) or Safe Mode (in Windows 7).

B) If Safe Mode did not boot into the built-in Administrator account, then enable the built-in Administrator account. If it did, then go to step 2D.

C) Log off in Safe Mode, and then log on to the built-in Administrator account to logon with that account in Safe Mode.

D) Go to OPTION ONE or OPTION TWO.

OPTION ONE

To Fix the User Account Profile

1. Open the Start menu.

2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.

3. If prompted by UAC, either click on Continue (Vista) or Yes (Windows 7).

4. In regedit, go to: (See screenshot below step 5)

Code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

5. In the left pane, look for the S-1-5..... folder (SID key) with the long number that has .bak at the end of the numbers.
(See screenshots below steps 6A and 7B)
NOTE:
A) In the right pane, look at the ProfileImagePath to verify that this is the user account profile that has the error.
B) You may have another S-1-5..... folder (SID key) above it with the exact same number without the .bak at the end of it.

6. If you have Two S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the same Number
NOTE: This is if you have two S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the exact same numbers, but the second (below) one has the .bak at the end of the numbers.

A) In the left pane, right click on the first (top) S-1-5..... folder (SID key) that does not have .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename. (See screenshot below)

B) Add .bk to the end of the numbers. (See screenshot below)

C) In the left pane, right click on the second S-1-5..... folder (SID key) with .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename. (See screenshot above)

D) Remove only .bak from the end of the numbers and press Enter. (See screenshot below)

E) Now go back and Rename the first one with .bk to .bak now at the end of the numbers and press Enter.

F) Go to step 8.
7. If you have Only One S-1-5..... Folder (SID key) with .bak
NOTE: This is if you only have one S-1-5..... folder (SID key) for your user account with .bak at the end of the numbers.

A) In the left pane, right click on the S-1-5..... folder (SID key) with .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename. (See screenshot below)

B) Remove only .bak at the end of the numbers and press Enter. (See screenshot below and below step 10)

8. In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on RefCount and click on Modify. (See screenshot below step 10)
NOTE: If you do not have RefCount, then right click on a empty space in the right pane and click New and DWORD (32 bit) Value, then type RefCount and press Enter. This value for this entry will reset and return back to the original value after you have restarted the computer and logged on to the account.

A) Type 0 (number) and click on OK. (See screenshot below)

9. In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on State and click on Modify. (See screenshot below step 10)
NOTE: This value for this entry will reset and return back to the original value after you have restarted the computer and logged on to the account.

A) Type 0 (number) and click on OK. (See screenshot below)

10. The registry will now look like this for the one without .bak now. (See screenshot below)

11. Close regedit.

12. Restart the computer.

13. See if you can logon now.
NOTE: If this still does not help, then either try OPTION TWO below or see the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial.

OPTION TWO

To Delete the User Account and Create Another One

Warning

You can do this option if you do not care about losing the user account and the contents in the user folders. Your programs will still be installed, but you will need to create new shortcuts for them afterwards.

1. Delete the User account profile that this error is for.

2. Open the Start menu.

3. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.

4. If prompted by UAC, click on Continue (Vista) or Yes (Windows 7).

5. In regedit, go to: (See screenshot below step 7)

Code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

6. In the left pane, click on one of the S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the long number in it.
NOTE: It may have .bak at the end of it.

A) In the right pane, look at the ProfileImagePath to see if this is the same user account that you deleted in step 1 above.

B) Repeat step 6 until you find the one that you deleted in step 1 above.
NOTE: If the user account is not here, then it has already been removed when deleted in step 1. Go to step 9.
7. To Backup the Registry SID Key
WARNING: You should backup this SID key to be safe in case you delete the wrong one in step 8 below.

A) Right click on the SID key, and click on Export.

B) Type in a name and save the REG file to a safe location.
NOTE: This is your backup. To Restore the Backup, right click on the REG backup file and click on Merge.

C) Continue on to step 8.

8. To Delete the Registry SID Key

A) Right click on the SID key, and click on Delete. (See screenshot above)

B) Click on Yes to confirm deletion. (See screenshot below)

9. Close regedit.

10. Now, just create a new normal Administrator account.

11. Restart the computer, and log on to your new account.
NOTE: If this still does not help, then either try OPTION ONE above or see the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial.

Replacement of the distribution of Windows 7
When you add a distribution of Windows 7 to copy all the folders and files (setup.exe and autorun.inf are not needed) in the root directory, just match the folder boot, and in it the folder fonts, ru-ru files and boot.sdi, bootsect . exe, etfsboot.exe, memtest.exe which can be easily replaced. The other folders (efi, sources, upgrade, support) and the file bootmgr simply copied without replacement. Register in the setup menu windows can be in the files win1.lst, win2.lst, win3.lst, which correspond to the graphic menu (high and low resolution) and a text menu.
