The interface is very basic, it's actually nothing else but a small piano keyboard.

You can create the ringtone by clicking on the keyboard notes and the software will automaticaly translate the song and make the ringtone for you.

Sapphire - Radeon HD4870 X2 Review

When ATI launched the HD4870 graphics card, it surprised many with its blend of near high-end performance with mainstream prices. One of the most surprised seemed to be arch enemy Nvidia, which promptly started chopping prices to try to compete on the bang-for-buck front.

So if one HD4870 is good, imagine how good two HD4870 cores on the same PCB might be. Welcome to the R700 - or, to you and me, the Radeon HD4870 X2.

From the outside the only apparent difference between the new HD4870 X2 and the previous HD3870 X2 is the pair of updated RV770 cores and faster GDDR5 memory, but under the skin there is a whole world of difference.

The HD4870 has the second generation PCI-E 2.0 x16 switch (PLX) as opposed to the PCI-E 1.1 of the previous generation X2, giving the HD4870 a much wider communication channel than before; twice as big, in fact, at 5GB/s (in each direction).

This helps in the rendering of modern games, as these need data transfers between each GPU when more than one core is used. In addition to this fast, wide interconnect, the HD4870 X2 also supports SidePort which enables the cores to use an additional 5GB/s bi-directional bandwidth, but seeing as though no software currently available takes advantage of this, it has been disabled. This all adds up to a theoretical internal bandwidth of a colossal 21.8GB/s, eliminating any potential bottlenecks.

Although the HD4780 X2 comes with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, dual GPU cards don't share a frame buffer which means in this case that each RV770 core has 1GB of GDDR5 to play with. The memory may only go through a seemingly mean 256-bit memory bus, but the sheer speed of GDDR5 (in this case 3,600MHz) more than makes up for it. Each core is clocked at 750MHz and the 800 shaders in each all run at the same speed as the core.

Surprisingly, the HD4870 X2 uses less power than two HD4870s in a Crossfire set up. The two-card set up will eat up to around 320W while the HD4870 X2 makes do with 'just' 286W. As with the single card it uses single 6-pin and 8-pin PCI-E power connectors.

Sapphire's board is pretty much a reference design in red and black but with the company's own attractive gunslinger sticker on the dual-slot cooler. This cooler doesn't use heatpipe technology to aid in the cooling process, relying instead on two hefty copper heatsinks, one on each GPU.

The card uses the same fan as found on the single core model and our review sample had a strange habit of spinning the fan up to full speed for a split second for no apparent reason, sometimes while being benched, sometimes just while in idle mode.

So what about performance, I hear you ask? Well, it's pretty - no, make that very - impressive, especially as you might expect at higher resolutions when all that bandwidth makes its presence felt.

Testing it with 3DMark06 at a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 it produced a score of 16,400, compared to the 13,980 of a single HD4870 and 14,102 of an Nvidia GTX280. But of course with all that available bandwidth the real grunt of the HD4870 X2 comes into play at higher resolutions. At 1,920 by 1,200 the X2 gives a score of 15,890 compared to the 12,758 of the HD4870 and 13,400 of the GTX280. It's a similar story in the more intensive 3DMark Vantage: the X2 produced a score of 12,530 in the Performance test as compared to the 8,360 of the HD4870 and 10,103 of the GTX280.

It's the same story again when tested using real games: at high resolutions and with plenty of filtering added, the HD4870 X2 is out on its own. In World in Conflict at a resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 with 4x AA and 16x AF, the average frame rate produced by the HD4870 X2 was 45fps while the single core HD4870 and GTX280 could only manage 26fps and 33fps respectively.

If you want to test your own setup, Sapphire now bundles 3DMark Vantage in with the card instead of the previous 3DMark06. Along with it you get CyberLink's DVD Suite and PowerDVD and the latest version of the Ruby Rom. The hardware bundle consists of two power adaptors (one 4-pin Molex to 6-pin PCI-E and one 4-pin Molex to 8-pin PCI-E), a single CrossFire bridge, S-Video to RCA adaptor, Component out dongle, DVI-VGA adaptor and a DVI-HDMI adaptor.

Sapphire - Radeon HD4870 X2 features - Verdict

While Nvidia may still hold the crown for the fastest single core card in the GTX280, the Radeon HD4870 X2 shows that ATI is interested at getting back the overall performance crown, and in most respects has succeeded with the new card. All this at a price point that isn't too outrageous compared to the price that some GTX280s are going for.

Facebook rolls out new privacy tool

Facebook began calling on users to get a better grip on their online privacy by dictating who sees what in profiles at the world’s leading social networking service.

All of Facebook’s more than 350 million members will be required to refine settings with a new software tool that lets them specify who gets to be privy to each photo, video, update or other piece of content uploaded to the website.

“We care so much about this that we will require people to go through it to get access to the service,” Facebook vice president of global communications, marketing and public policy Elliot Schrage told AFP.

“The idea is to evolve, to give users better control of with whom they share when they share.”

The change promises to help Facebook users prevent embarrassing images or overly revealing updates from being seen by business acquaintances, bosses or others not part of inner circles of online friends.

“You will have the opportunity to customize even individual pieces of content when you upload a picture or a video,” Schrage said.

“If you want to share a photo with just your family, you could do that as well. It is much more straightforward.”

The new privacy tools let Facebook members pre-determine accessibility to profile content in categories designated “Friends,” “Friends of Friends,” “Everyone” and “Customized.”

Facebook members can select a privacy setting for each post by using lock icons next to “share” buttons on profile pages.

“It is going to be far more intuitive for users,” Future of Privacy Forum director Jules Polonetsky said of the Facebook privacy control change.

“When we post something is when we think of whom we want it to go to, and this is the first time we will be able to do that.”

Regional networks—geographical community groupings that Facebook recently eliminated—led members to unwittingly share profile content with as many as millions of users, according to Polonetsky.

“Facebook has balanced more sharing with less of a chance people won’t realize who they are sharing with,” Polonetsky said.

This is the first time Facebook users will be able to make “decisions on the fly” about individual posts and updates, he added.

The new tool stems from a revamped privacy policy unveiled earlier this year and is not connected with any advertising or revenue-making scheme, according to Facebook.

“We hope users will recognize this is an unprecedented approach to engaging them around the issue of privacy and control,” Schrage said.

“No service or site has ever asked their users to go through this process; it is privacy by design.”

Facebook is braced for complaints given that changes at the social networking service routinely trigger protests in the community.

“We will have people who will love what we’ve done and embrace it, and we will have people distressed and concerned by it,” Schrage predicted, adding that Facebook appreciates how passionate its members are about the service.

“We focus on patterns of use afterward, and what we found is when we make changes it is followed by substantially greater involvement on the site and growth,” he said.

The new privacy controls also limit the visibility of content created by minors, definded as users under the age of 18.

Even if a minor selects “Everyone,” the information they share will be restricted to their “Friends”, “Friends of Friends” and school or work networks.

Apple hits back against Nokia in patent row

Apple, maker of the iconic iPhone, hit back in a legal row with Nokia and countersued the Finnish telecom giant, alleging it had breached 13 Apple patents.

Apple accused Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, of infringing the patents held by the Cupertino, California company.

“Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours,” Apple vice president Bruce Sewell said in a brief statement.

The move came after Nokia in October accused its US rival of infringing 10 Nokia mobile phone technology patents with the iPhone.

According to Nokia, the patents cover “wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.”

Ilkka Rahnasto, deputy head of Nokia’s legal department, accused Apple at the time of “attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.”

Apple countersued in federal court in the eastern state of Delaware, where Nokia filed its complaint against Apple.

Nokia is trying to buoy a sinking position in the mobile telephone market by getting its hands on iPhone technology and charging “exorbitant” fees for patented technology allegedly intrinsic to industry standards, Apple charged.

Apple denied infringing on Nokia patents and rejected the notion that technology at issue in the Finnish firm’s lawsuit is essential to any industry standard.

“Nokia’s demands appear to be driven by declines in its own mobile phone business,” Apple said in a 79-page counterclaim filed with the court.

“Nokia has been attempting to use its allegedly standards-essential patents to help regain what Nokia has lost in the marketplace.”

Nokia posted its first quarterly loss in a decade in October amid falling sales. Analysts said the poor results were partly due to the growing popularity of the iPhone and Research in Motion’s Blackberry over Nokia models.

Apple reported record quarterly sales of 7.4 million iPhones in October.

Nokia made agreements to let its patented technology be crafted into industry standards and now has a “hold-up” power that it “abusively seeks to wield,” Apple argued in court paperwork.

If the technology is critical to standards, Nokia is betraying a commitment to license it on “fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms,” Apple maintained.

Along with demanding steep royalties, Nokia is insisting on “grantbacks” that permit the company to use Apple technology, the iPhone maker said in legal documents.

Nokia is already using Apple smartphone technology without permission, the California firm charged.

“This attempt by Nokia to leverage patents previously pledged to industry standards is an effort to free ride on the commercial success of Apple’s innovative iPhone while avoiding liability for copying the iPhone and infringing Apple’s patents,” Apple said in its filing.

Apple is asking the court to award it unspecified financial damages and dismiss the suit filed by Nokia.

Nokia told AFP that it is studying Apple’s claim “and will respond in due course.”

The concept PC is called E-Ball designed by Apostol Tnokovski. It’s shaped like a sphere because in Tnokovski’s opinion this is the best shape in nature and it draws everybody’s attention.

E-Ball will feature a dual core processor, 250-500GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, integrated graphic card and sound card, 2 x 50W speakers, HD-DVD recorder, wireless optical mouse and laser keyboard, LAN and WLAN card, modem, Web cam and integrated LCD projector.

The E-Ball PC supports a paper holder and the paper sheet on the holder could act like a screen where you can watch movies or something. This concept PC will measure 160mm in diameter and it was designed for Microsoft Windows OS. For the moment, there is no word on pricing or when it’s going to be available. But upon release, it will surely hit the markets as everyone would like to see a small spherical PC like this one.

The spherical shape may not be practical. A sphere isn’t a very good idea for an object that needs to dissipate heat. Spheres have the highest volume/surface area ratio possible (which is why bubbles are spherical) and so would have the hardest time getting rid of waste heat. But hey, the most important here is that someone is pushing the envelope of PC computing and getting bigger ideas. It takes a brilliant mind to think these ideas which engineers then bring to reality. Sure there are some very dodgy concepts like the round mobo etc, but if nobody demands that engineers stretch their imagination we would still be having dinner with a pick axe out of stone.

World's cheapest laptop has been launched by China's Menq. Using an ARM-based processor manufactured by Samsung, it sells for $80. Menq calls it EasyPC. The EasyPC runs Windows CE but it is claimed that it can also run Google's Android.

How Can You Protect Your Computer on the Internet?

Viruses, worms, and hackers….oh my!

If you are connected to the internet, you need to make sure you get your computer set up properly if you want to avoid problems down the road. With all the viruses, spyware and other threats on the internet today, no computer should be set up without the proper protection. And that protection needs to be place as soon after you hook up your new machine as possible.

The following five steps will make your computer a much harder target for threats. You still won't be completely immune to problems, but 99% of the time the threat will pass you by, looking for the easy mark.

1. Running a Personal firewall

A personal firewall is software that basically makes your computer invisible to hackers, worms and other threats that can infect your computer over the internet. Setting up a firewall is the absolute first thing you should do if you're going to connect to the internet. Without a firewall, your computer could get infected in as little as one minute after connecting.

If you have a brand new computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2, there is a firewall built into Windows. It will already have been turned on when you first set up your computer. If you're running an older version of Windows, even, an earlier version of Windows XP, there is no firewall automatically set up for you. In this case there are two possibilities:

Your computer came pre-loaded with a firewall such as Norton Internet Security or McAfee Internet Security. You have no firewall installed and should download ASAP. If you don't have any personal firewall software installed, you should do so right away. Zone Alarm is very good firewall program that has a version that you can download and install free. 2. Turn Windows Updates

Again, if you're running Windows XP Service Pack 2 this is already set up, but otherwise you should turn on Windows Updates. Microsoft releases updates for security problems and other bugs in Windows on a regular basis. These updates will keep your computer running better, and they often fix security issues that could compromise your information or privacy,

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, you can double-check that automatic updates are turned on by clicking Start, and then click Control Panel, then double-click Security Center. The window that opens will tell you if automatic updates are turned on, and lets you turn them on if they're no.

To turn on automatic updates in earlier version of Windows XP, click on the Start menu, click Control Panel and then double-click on System. On the "Automatic Updates" tab, click the option to "Automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule I specify."

To turn them on in Windows 2000, click on Start menu, click Control Panel and then double-click on Automatic Updates and click same option "Automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule I specify."

Now when Microsoft release updates, they will be downloaded for you automatically and Windows will tell you when they are ready to be installed.

3. Install & Update Antivirus Software

Most new computers come with antivirus software these days. You might have Norton, McAfee or another brand. No matter what program you have, you will need to update it when you get connected to the internet. It doesn’t matter how new your computer is -there will be new viruses, and new updates for the antivirus software, since it was loaded.

The exact process is different for each brand of antivirus program, but most of them will have an icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop, beside the time. The icon might be picture of a shield (McAfee), a stethoscope (Norton) or something else. In most cases, if you point to the icon for your antivirus and click the right mouse button, a menu will pop up with an update option. It could be simply called update of could be something like Live Update or Download Latest Updates. If you click on the update option (with the left button this time) it will install the newest updates for you.

If you are not sure which icon is for your antivirus software, just point to each one for a few seconds and a little should pop up telling you what it is.

4. Install Anti-Spyware Software

Spyware - and other things known as adware and malware - is becoming as big a problem as viruses. Spyware programs can cause a lot of problems with your computer, not to mention they can track your personal information and you never know where it's being sent. Some new computers might include antispyware software, but most of them don't yet. There area quite a few anti-spyware programs available, some free and some not. The one I recommend is from Microsoft and is one of the free ones.

One of the reasons I like it is because it always runs in the background and will automatically catch a lot lf spyware before it gets on your computer. Many of the other programs don't catch it until you run a scan. Not only does this allow things to get on your computer, it also means you have to actually remember to run a scan. 5. Set up a Free Email Account

This last item is not as critical as the first four, but I would highly recommend you set up an email account with one of the free services like Hotmail or Gmail.

Once you're on the internet, you'll find a lot of useful information that you want that requires you to provide an email address. In some cases, these people will end up sending you a bunch of spam. If you use a free email account to sign up for anything that you don't know for sure you can trust it's not going to fill your main email with a bunch of junk.

This goes for anything really, not just online information. If you're entering a contest or signing up for anything offline and you don't know where your information could end up being used, I would suggest using your free email address. If worse comes to worse, and your free email address gets inundated with spam, you can always set up a new one and let the old one expire. If you've had your computer for a while and never done any of these things, you should still take these steps to get it set up properly. It will definitely save you a lot of time and possibly money as you use your system.
