I must admit that JetBrains developing team amazes me alost every time when I’m reading their last updates form rss. Currently, IntelliJ IDEA team has almost finished work on final version of IDEA 9 ( today, 9.0.4 has been announced ), but they already started creating complete new version of this software! Version 10, of course in beta stage, seems to have a few quite stunning improvements and new features. First of all, a brand new theme and UI options fo Mac users. I’m not pretty sure, but I think this time there are no problems and lags using scrolled lists etc. – everything seems to work a little bit faster.
What’s most important for flash platform devs, there are plenty of changes and improvements, such as:

brand new icons for class, interface and mxml component. There is also difference if you mark class as dynamic or final :)
Extract interface, extract base class. This is simply awesome and just rocks!. In some cases some errors are shown, but remember that this is EAP program and finding this issues is exactly what this is released for. Again, FlashBuilder, FDT, FD can only dream of that kind of stuff right now :)
compiling css into swf
possibility to choose target browser for testing flex apps or running FlexUnit tests
option to put swf in local-trusted sandbox when running
option to include debug info in swf/swc release
redesigned ‘new ActionScript Class’/'new Flex Component’ wizards.

These are only couple of them, you can find all list in here. During EAP program to run IdeaX you can use your key for IntelliJ9, but for final release you will have to buy a new license :)

Fabrication 0.7.5.1 release

Fabrication development is still ongoing and new features have been added recently. Today an update to 0.7.5 version has been released ( some bug fixes mainly ), but version 0.7.5 brings new possibilities to programmers:

custom dependencies mechanism ( more here )
fabrication RPC plugin, wich is an example of implementation of custem IoC mechanism ( more here )

Fabrication 0.7.4 with FabricationConsole

With Fabrication 0.7.4 old, good Tequila-style console has been released. I didn’t planned it, but it seems that this version is very important – at this point ALL functionality from Tequila has been successfully ported to Fabrication! What is more – with very interesting feedback form PureMVC community couple of important fixes have been applied to bugs which were very hard to spot. Thanks everybody!
As a quick summary, these are most significant changes/updates from 0.7.2 release:

added separate builds for flex3 (moxie) support
fixed bug with modular applications ( application domain issue )
new proxies registration strategy with IoC mechanism
added logging support for framework
added support for FabricationConsole
0.7.4 release is created with Flex SDK 4.1.0.16076

Fabrication 0.7.2 and namespace notifications

Fabrication 0.7.2 has been just released. Almost whole Tequila functionality has been moved to fabrication, here is the list of major changes applied:

added fabrication namespace ( http://puremvc.org/utilities/fabrication/2010 ) ( version 0.7.1 )
AirApplication/FlexApplication for spark and AirHaloApplication/FlexHaloApplication for halo architecture ( version 0.7.1 )
Introduced FabricationModuleLoader and FabricationAirModuleLoader – simplified way to manage modules using ModuleManager ( version 0.7.1 )
Introduced new Reactions registration approach ( version 0.7.1 )
Introduced simply IoC for fabrication actors ( version 0.7.1 )
fixed injection mechanism in FlashMediator?
fixed issues in new reactions mechanism
introduced reflexive notifications interests via namespaces

Notifications via namespaces are quite new idea for Fabrication users. This solution has been adopted from Tequila, and you can read more about it here.

Next release should be available within next couple of weeks. FabricationConsole ( AIR utility ) will be presented, so stay tuned!

Fabrication is back to life

As I promised earlier today I’m ready with new release of fabrication framework. After couple of weekends spent on Darshan code and tests I managed to fix some issues ( mostly caused by lack of support for flex3 spark architecture ) and prepared a new, fully Flex4 SDK compatible version!.

What has changed since last ( 0.6 ) release:
- all tested have been ported to support new metadata driven FlexUnit4 tests
- most of repository is rearranged
- ant build is created form the scratch
- you can download 3 distribution libraries ( air, flex and pure as3 ), each one contains embeded PureMVC libs so you don’t need to have one separately.

Fabrication += Tequila

As you know Fabrication project ( one of the bests PureMVC extensions, base code for my Tequila ) has not been updated for quite time. Many of you probably know that Darshan, owner and creator of Fabrication, had to abandon project and was looking for someone to take it over. With help from Svend from Hamburg ( many thanks by the way :) ) Darshan and me agreed that I will be the person to look after Fabrication from now!

Since the last update for Fabrication code is more than one year old, I think the most important step is to make it fully flex4 compatible. We both decided that merging current fabrication code with my tequila is the best idea for the next move. This is my plan for start – I you are interested in this framework, please watch for any updates on project page. I will try to bring this project to life as soon as I can!

Szoter – web based annotation tool

Szoter is another great application form created by Mati ( segfaultsoft ). In few words it is web based application that allows you to upload pictures, making camera snapshots or screenshots and add add anottations to it ( shapes, lines, text or other images ). Then you can save it on your harddrive or pass it via email etc.

Then you can save it on your harddrive or pass it via email. Of course it’s flex app, powered by Java applet for screenshots functionality ( sorry Chrome users ). What is very important for me, personally, is that Mateusz has been using tequila as client side framework for this project. I know that he is very pleased and always says how quickly and easily he can develop his projects with my tool. It is great to hear such opinion from that very skilled and experienced developer. Welcome! It is almost two months since I’ve posted last note, but it was not time wasted!. I’ve started using PureMVC more than two years ago, then time came for Fabrication. After dozen projects here I am, with some experience and my own thoughts about these tools. That how Tequila was born.

Tequila Console is AIR application to debug notification flow, framework issues and user log messages.

IntelliJ IDEA 9.0 aka Maia

Who knows me good enough knows that I’m big fan od FDT as main flex development tool. Couple months ago ( half a year probably ) one of my friends told me about IntelliJ IDEA. That time I spent maybe five minuts to install + run + check_couple_features and realised that I’m staying with FDT. Now, with the newest version of this tool ( 9.0, codename Maia ), I’ve been working for couple of days, and must say that I’m quite impressed about given flex support ( full mxml and flex4 (!) support that FDT still lacks ). All famous refactoring features that are offered are just incredible. Ofcourse, If you ( like I ) are used to eclipse you probably find that new UI and new terminology might look hard to understand, but I think it’s worth to spend some time on this software.

I’m still wating for true, real support for mxml in FDT , support for Gumbo and improved refactoring. All this things should be expected in FDT 4.0, but when I remember how long I was waiting for as3 support… Maybe it’s time to move to JetBrain tool for now?

Update. So, my first thougts about Maia:

+ refactoring is marvelous. Just like that.
+ full support for as/mxml ( including spark architecture )
+ lots of usable plugins ( UML, TeamCity, etc. )

= speed & memory issues ( quite similiar like eclipse )
= svn support. Changes view is quite cool but I’m missing some nice features from subversive in eclipse ( icon decorations, revision number per file/folder etc. )

- Maybe it is my fault, but I can’t get editor to perform live error checking in all classes in project. I have to open some class to see if there are some errors. It’s not good…
- Putting different icons for as3 class/interface would be good idea ( java sources have that )
