In a recent silicon.com survey, more than a quarter of respondents admitted green IT was off the agenda because of the recession.

But many organisations have found the key is to align green goals with broader cost-cutting initiatives - which are definitely in vogue with CIOs and CFOs. In some cases government policies are already giving businesses a shove in the right direction. For example, in July 2008, the UK government informed 10,000 businesses that they could be affected by the Carbon Reduction Commitment - a climate change and energy-saving scheme that will take effect in 2010.

silicon.com : News

Data centres 'investing in green technology' - Data quality news

Data centres 'investing in green technology'
Data quality news
The green consumer product market is growing relatively slowly, however, the same cannot be said for the business side of things, it has been claimed. ...
Survey: Few companies addressing cyberterrorismCNET News

all 35 news articles »

"clean tech"
A Dimensional Research study for for KACE shows that while smaller companies know about the cost benefits of managing desktop power, they’re showing very little inclination to actually do anything about it.

The August study surveyed more than 500 respondents globally in a range of company sizes and industries.

While most companies, it seems, talk a good, green game, they don’t actually do much about it.

According to the study says, “the vast majority of participants (93%) say that they believe there is an opportunity for organizations to save energy and reduce costs by implementing power management for desktop and laptop computers.”

No quibbling there.

But 56% don’t manage desktop power in any way.

The survey also found:
• 21% manage desktop power usage by giving guidance to employees instead of using technology solutions
• Only 10% use a commercially developed solution to manage desktop power
• 65% have a “green” or corporate sustainability initiative
• 82% of large companies have “green” initiatives compared to 51% of small companies
• Participants who have implemented technology for desktop power management report higher savings than the predicted savings estimated by those who have not implemented this technology
• 58% of front-line IT professionals have know way of knowing about the cost savings from desktop power management (probably because energy costs aren’t assigned to IT)
• The top reason cited for not implementing desktop power management solutions is the need to keep computers on for patching and upgrading. Among the rest who actually do something, 21% only suggest workers shut down their computers when they leave for the day.
