It is officially available on the Galaxy S III which is only available in Europe, but you can get Flipboard for Android officially now on any device.

Here’s how to get it on your device (the easiest way is to do this right on your Android phone):

Go to Settings>Applications and tap the box next to “Unknown Sources” This allows you to install apps from outside the Market.

Download the file attached to this link.

Click install

Bada Bing, Bada BOOM! Flipboard for Android is now in your hot little hands! How easy was that?

I’ve used the beta for some time now and it is very stable. The only problems I have had, and only occasionally, is with the sign in process. I assume these are when the server is most busy, because it works most other times.

Here are a few pics. Sorry for the low quality, I only had my iPad to take the pictures with.

We reported a few months ago that the next gen XBox could be dropping its optical drive in favor of downloads and flash media. Now, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sony had considered doing the same, but has decided to stick with optical discs. The Japanese electronics maker decided against a download-only model because “Internet connectivity is too inconsistent around the world.” Replacing the optical drive with downloads would have also hurt the adoption of Blu-ray, which Sony heavily pushed (and helped invent) with the Playstation 3.

The next-generation PlayStation, codename Orbis, is rumored to launch during the holiday season of 2013. It has been reported that the system will feature an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU capable of running games at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels.

So I was over at The Verge, which is not a surprise since I am there several times each day, reading about the latest tech news and deciding what I want to write about. I stumble upon this news article about Verizon’s new 300Mb/s FiOS speeds, and thought two things: first, I want, second why hasn’t Verizon given this to everyone?

Apparently two years ago, Verizon stopped rolling out FiOS. In other words the only people who get it are those who already have access to it. I remember reading about this news at the time and thinking that it was incredibly sad. Now, two years or more later, it is even more sad. The Internet Service Provider situation here in the US is terrible, beyond terrible really. As a member of a rural community that lies about 13 miles outside the nearest city, I have exactly one ISP choice. While that, of course, is better than none at all, choice is always better than no choice.

Verizon had a chance to rule the world with FiOS. Not only were there possibilities for incredibly high internet speeds, but the TV service is great too. They could have, and should have, brought this to as many people in the US as possible. They would become the biggest Internet Service Provider in the world very quickly. Everyone would switch to them, because almost without question their service was better than anything else we have access to. Comcast (who also doesn’t have a nationwide service) only offers up to 100Mb/s. (listen to me say only LOL), and their TV service is crappy compared to the FiOS experience.

Of course, I don’t even have access to Comcast. I have WOW! Internet service. Formerly Broadstripe. Formerly Millennium Digital Media. The fastest service I can get? 15Mb/s. WHOA, Don’t know what I would do with all that speed! Do you know how much I would pay for FiOS? A LOT, more than a lot actually, a lot a lot. And, the thing is, I am sure I am not alone in this. There are millions of people out there who are drooling over FiOS but will never get it.

This is one of those moments that you will remember every few years and think about what could have been. Sorry Verizon, you blew it.

Ever since there was a report of Facebook hiring Apple engineers the new talk of the town is Facebook building it’s own smartphone. This has been a rumor in the past and it makes just as much sense now as it did then, none at all. Every outlet has been reporting this same story, you can find zdnet’s article on it, but for me the minute I saw it I thought “that can’t be true”.

I want to go a little farther than saying that it could be a Facebook phone. I mean it’s hard to believe that if I can know this is a bad idea, someone who builds a social network that currently defines social networks and in university nonetheless, isn’t able to tell what a bad idea it is. If it is actually true then whoever gave Zuckerberg the idea should be fired. In the current smartphone market where iOS and Android pretty much rule a Facebook branded phone would face a severe uphill battle trying to change that. There are current players in the market like RIM who are established and have a hard time competing with them plus building a smartphone is not an overnight thing no matter how good the people you hire happen to be. I saw on my Twitter feed someone said you wont use a Facebook phone but your kids will and that is all that matters. I thought to myself that is the dumbest statement I’ve ever heard, it must be ignorant of how hard it is to survive in the smartphone market as a new player. If “you” as in us the current generation don’t use the phone it wont be around for our kids to use.

I don’t want to go on and on about how bad an idea it is because many outlets already do that so just look the story up and you’ll get many good points. What I want to do is lay out what I thought about the whole thing when I heard it, instead of this silly Facebook phone idea. We know that Facebook has acquired Instagram, are rumored by TNW to be trying to acquire Face.com, rumored to be buying the browser Opera, and there is Sean Parker’s Airtime which no one knows how it will link into Facebook if it does. So Facebook seems to be on a roll, flushed with cash through their IPO and ready to make a dent in the universe to coin a phrase. So now Facebook is supposed to have hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers that worked on both the iPhone and the iPad. Facebook’s current apps for the iPad and iPhone suck. After acquiring Instagram, a well known and loved app for photo sharing and applying filters, Facebook put out their own Facebook Camera app soon after. So maybe just maybe Facebook is trying to build a dream team to take both smartphone platforms by storm.

As I said right now iOS and Android pretty much run the smartphone market so having a killer app on both would increase your user base incredibly. It would also get recognition for your app and by extension the social network by new users and keep Facebook marching on to that 1 billionth user and beyond. This is especially true on Android where the handset manufacturers using the mobile Operating System (OS) are a great many and with each making many devices. This has been the problem for developers thus far trying to develop for Android is the fragmentation that the platform presents. So what if Facebook now full of money was the first developer to break through it and have an app that works on the majority if not all Android devices properly. It would be incredible and the stuff headlines are made of and when I say work properly I mean each device works like it should not some having a cobbled together interface based on the most popular Android devices. In order to do something like that it would take a dream team. The iOS side is alot easier but if you want to build an app so impressive, so polished that it is indistinguishable to the native apps it would again take a dream team.

Now I’m not saying that a Facebook phone is not in the works, every company hires with the future in mind. So while they are building a presence now there might be secret projects going on in the background that require these hardware and software engineers. I just think that a company that wasn’t built by idiots must have more sense than thinking they could bring out something in a year that would rival the devices currently on the market.

How should students be taught about education in grade school? Should they be taught? That’s this weeks topic that Matt and Ricky disagree on. We also talk about hopes and dreams for the next generation iPad, and we have an interesting discussion on Silicon Valley’s monopoly on the tech industry, during which Matt refrains from bashing Canadians. Too much.

We promise that there will be an iTunes feed for the video version. Our current problem is hosting, it is very expensive to host big video files, and even if we compress the hour long podcast it is still almost a GB. While we are okay with hosting the video podcast on a service like AWS S3, it will get very expensive very fast. We could host it here on our servers for T3KD, but we only have 100GB of storage and cannot upgrade to more. If we were to change to a dedicated or virtual server then we could get more storage, but again it is very expensive. We have looked into services like Blip.tv, but they have started to limit their shows to web series, which we are not. Once we find a reasonably cost effective way of hosting we will be able to deliver you an iTunes feed. If you have any suggestions for us, email us ( email at the3cast dot com )

Two more iPhone part suppliers have leaked nearly identical-looking versions of what might be a backplate for Apple’s next iPhone, both of which support rumors of the device’s lengthened body and redesigned dock connector. Parts supplier iFixyouri has provided 9to5Mac with a black backplate for a new iPhone, showing the phone’s form factor and a smaller dock connector port, and extra room at the bottom of the shell which the supplier says will be used by Apple for enhanced speakers. 9to5 Mac notes that iFixyouri is the same group that was the first to report that the iPad 2 would be offered in white.

Engadget is reporting that parts supplier uBreakiFix has provided similar photos of a white iPhone shell, which are almost identical to iFixyouri’s photos. The backplate’s length seems to support earlier rumors that a new iPhone will come with a 3.95-inch screen at a wider resolution of 1136 x 640. We have discussed why just making a longer version of the iPhone isn’t a great idea.

On Friday along with the rest of the world we brought you the news that Absinthe 2.0 was out. This is the long awaited tool for an untethered Jailbreak (JB) of iOS 5.1.1. It was a pretty crazy day because in a move not seen too many times Apple released another version of iOS 5.1.1 that wasn’t able to be Jailbroken by Absinthe 2. The first 5.1.1 version released a little while ago was dubbed “206″ while the new version dubbed “208″ appeared sometime on Friday. The reason for the naming is the internal naming of the firmware Files. As you can see below while the first one was 9B206 the newer version was 9B208.

Now while pushing out quick updates is not unheard of for Apple it seemed strange because there was no information on what the new version changed. Any devices with the first version also couldn’t update to the newer version because they are both 5.1.1 which made it even more weird. What it did do was mess up alot of Jailbreakers who found themselves unable to use the Absinthe tool at the time. On Friday I was frustrated when I ran Absinthe and wasn’t able to successfully JB my iPhone. I ran it on my iPad 3 which was a JB virgin and had been updated to the earlier version of 5.1.1 it worked fine. So I hopped over to my favorite JB resource www.iclarified.com and checked out the iOS 5.1.1 firmware and that is when I noticed there were two different versions.

So once I figured out what had happened it was a simple procedure to get my iPhone up and running. So following I will provide some useful links if you’re trying to get your Absinthe JB on. Then I will provide the possible steps to Jailbreaking your iOS device.

iClarified Jailbreak Page
iClarified iPhone firmware Page
Where to get Absinthe
How to run Absinthe on OS X Mountain Lion

Absinthe has been upgraded to 2.0.2 to support this new version of 5.1.1 ofcourse, I had no doubt that was going to happen. So here are a few scenarios and how to get your device Jailbroken.

If you have Absinthe 2.0 or 2.0.1 and your iPhone has been updated to the latest version of 5.1.1 then you can just get Absinthe 2.0.2 and run the tool. If for some reason you tried some other tools and processes and your iPhone is horribly messed up then here are your options.

Using iOS 5.1.1 version 206
Get this version from the link above
Run an iCloud/Manual backup of your iPhone
Make sure the phone is connected to the USB cable connected to your computer then power it off
Put the iPhone into DFU mode(look up the steps online)
Itunes will prompt you that an iPhone in recovery mode has been detected(this is when you’ll know you did the DFU steps right)
Hold your Option(Mac)/Shift(Windows) key and click on Restore in iTunes
In the new explorer window browse to the iOS firmware you downloaded
This will restore your iPhone with the version of iOS wiping out everything on it
After the reload is complete restore your iPhone from your last backup
Then run the Absinthe tool

Using iOS 5.1.1 version 208
The same procedure as above just with the newer version of iOS 5.1.1 and using Absinthe 2.0.2

Once you’re done you could have a phone looking like this,

(if you like the wallpaper it will be in a new wallpaper post in a few days)

Over the next year, Matt will be broadening his horizons by using Windows as his main operating system, instead of his beloved Mac OS. He will be writing ocassional entries into his Windows Challenge Diary. You can see previous entries here.

A whole week. I’ll be honest with you and say that I didn’t think I would make it this far. As of today I am still using Windows full time, and I haven’t started to pull out my hair, and as far as I know it hasn’t given me cancer or another unthinkable disease. I’m hoping that this endurance bodes well for may ability to actually last the entire year. Let’s hope it does.

What I like about Windows

Each entry I am going to try and find at least one thing that I am enjoying on Windows. My first entry was pretty much bitch, bitch, bitch. I vow to do better. Granted when I thought of do this “things I like” section it was pretty tough. I had to think about it for quite a while, which is either an ominous sign of my impending return to Mac OS, or is a good thing because it caused me to think about my usage of Windows more than I had been. I’m leaning toward the latter.

I have two things I would like to mention this week that I am really enjoying. First is Aero Snap, which for those of you who don’t know, allows you to drag a window to the sides or top and Windows 7 will automatically resize the window to fit the portion of the screen you want it to fill. For instance, if you drag the window and hold it at the top it makes the window full screen. If you drag it to either side, Windows makes the app fill half the screen either on the left or right. I really have used this quite a lot since I began the challenge. It is really handy since I seem to be resizing windows all the time, and I like having two windows open side by side, this keeps me from having to drag them and resize them by hand.

My second thing that I like is MetroTwit. I know, this is not a Windows feature, but hey. MetroTwit is a Twitter application, kind of like TweetDeck, but for Twitter only. It has columns and is designed in the Metro (Windows Phone 7) style. It is a beautiful application. I’m kinda addicted to Twitter apps, so it is nice to know that there is at least one on Windows that I like.

Things that are still driving me nuts

I can’t seem to figure out the difference between Ctrl and Command. I talked about this in my last entry too, I am having a hard time with the copy and paste keystroke differences between Windows and Mac. Even after a week, I still find myself pressing the wrong button. I even switch back to a regular Windows style keyboard (which I used to use until I got a solar Mac style), but it hasn’t helped. Now I find my self trying to use the Windows key to select Ctrl V and such, which is the way you do it in Mac when you have a Windows keyboard attached. The command key is the Windows button. I still think that eventually I will get used to this, but it seems to me taking quite a while.

The next thing is not a Windows or a Mac problem, its a hardware issue. I am quickly figuring out that an 80GB hard drive is not big enough. On my Mac partition I only have 13 GB free, and on the Windows side only 6 free. I plan to use a small external hard drive that is formatted for FAT(32) to store my big Windows files, since I can’t use my big Beast FireWire drive (It’s formatted HFS+, which Windows doesn’t support), so I have space for docs and such. Apps on the other hand are proving to be a problem. I am a member of Adobe Creative Cloud which gives me access to all the Adobe Creative Suite apps, so I have a lot of them installed on the Mac side. I have to keep some of them installed because they won’t work on 32 bit Windows (namely After Effects). My iMac doesn’t support 64 bit Windows in bootcamp. So I find myself in a pickle. I want to install some of the Adobe apps that I use often (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) on Windows so I can keep my Windows Challenge, but the hard drive space problem is killing me. This will hopefully motivate me to go out and get a bigger SSD. I didn’t want to do this since I will be getting a new computer in a few months, but it doesn’t look like I have a choice.

A Confession

I have had to boot into Mac a couple of times. Both times I had good cause. I had to go in there to use GarageBand and iMovie. I still haven’t found a suitable replacement for Garageband, tho I plan on giving Audacity a try. I don’t know if it has AAC capability or not, and I have to have that to use chapter markers and album art for The 3 Cast. As for iMovie, I tried Windows Movie Maker. It is not good. Maybe I am just dumb (a major possibility), but for some reason it would not let me add two movie clips to the same project. It would add them, but whatever clip I added second would become corrupted for some odd reason. This could just be a hardware issue again, or maybe not. Either way I had to edit a video, and iMovie seemed like my only option at the time.

‘Til Next Time

So I have some app problems to solve in the next week, because I really want to give Windows apps every opportunity. However, there may be no alternative but to boot up the Mac side to do my video and audio editing each week. Luckily I don’t do this but once a day, so my Windows Challenge won’t be corrupted too much. Hopefully by my next entry I will also have my hard drive issues sorted out.

Spotify took forever to come to the United States. People were clamoring for the service for more than a year before the company finally made it to the American shores. Apparently Spotify is a company that takes its time when it does anything, including its iPad app. After a year of being her in the USA, and more than two years in Europe, the company finally introduced its iPad app last month. While the app itself is nicely designed, it isn’t the most inspired design you will see out there. I say that because if you have seen the Twitter for iPad app, this will look very familiar. Besides the unoriginality of the design, the app works well, and does everything you expect it to be able to do for a 1.0 application. Let’s take a walk through and see where the app shines and falls a bit short.

User Interface

The app consists of panels that open to the right of the main panel every time you click on a new playlist or artist. Each new panel that you open lays on top of previous panels. The app has play and pause buttons at the bottom of the app, and you can gain more control by tapping the album cover of the song you are playing. The pop up gives you the options to star, add to playlist, share, view artist info, shuffle and repeat. As I said in the intro, the design of the app is nice, but unoriginal. But, really who cares, right? I mean it would have been nice if they had come up with their own ideas, and created innovative ideas as to how a music app should work. Even Rdio, Spotify’s main rival, created something that wasn’t a copy of a popular app. If you have used the Twitter for iPad app, the Spotify app works in about the same way, though it is missing a few of the Twitter apps nicer functions (more on that in a bit).

There is a nicely (and original) full screen “Now Playing” screen that allows you to flick back and forth between songs. I originally found the app to be crashy when in this mode, but they have since fixed the problems there. Along the side of the app you get options to search, see new releases, see your inbox, view your playlists, and view what your friends are listening to. Going into each of these spaces will open up a new set of possible panels. What’s nice is it does remember what panels you have open even if you switch away to another section.

My biggest problem with the app is that, while they took a lot of the good stuff from the twitter app, they left out one of the functions that I found most useful. That being, the ability to swipe a panel away. In the Spotify app, there seems to be no way to actually close the panel. You can hide it, but a swipe to the left reveals the last open panel. There is no way that I have found to close all panels. In the twitter app, you can swipe all open panels to the right and the app will dump all but the bottom main panel. Spotify seems to left this out when copying the code from the twitter app.

User Experience

Using the app is a breeze, once you get a grasp of the panel system. You can navigate easy within each panel, and using the basic functions of the app is really simple. I love the full screen now playing screen, which gives you the ability to flick between songs. While it is not exactly cover-flow, if you think of that you will get an idea of what you can do.

My biggest complaint for the app in the User Experience category is that all searching must be done from the search tab. This is true whether you want to search for new music or search through your playlists or collection. It’s all together. There is no way to search a specific playlist, or search within the playlist menu. I found that this made it harder to actually found the music you already have in your collection.

I also found that the social aspects of the iPad app are overplayed. While this may be just because I couldn’t care less what my friends are listening to, it seems that Spotify worried more about the social aspects of the app than any other portion. I would have preferred a great way to manage my playlists or a nice radio function. Neither of which are included, but there is a plethora of different ways to connect with your friends. Which is important for some people, I suppose.

Options

There are a few options, but nothing over powering or confusing. You get the offline option, a slider to select how you want crossfade handled, as well as an on/off switch for gapless playback. I enjoyed the gapless playback, which Rdio lacks, but it doesn’t work if you have a crappy connection (say on 3G).

You also get options to make your session private (keep your songs from your friends), an option to scrobble to Last.fm, and an option to show your songs on Facebook. These are nice if you want to either share a lot or share not at all what you listen to with your friends. You also get options to select what qaulity you want Spotify to stream/download at.

Conclusions

Frankly I like the Rdio app better. I use the search function a lot, and the way Spotify does it makes it more difficult to find my music. The app is designed in an intuitive fashion, but it takes the basics from the Twitter for iPad app, while leaving behind what made that app revolutionary (the panel remove gesture, pinch to expand, others).

The Spotify for iPad app does everything you need a basic music app to do, it plays your music. It doesn’t do much else, and the things it does do aren’t revolutionary or done in an innovative way. I would have liked to see more options for things like a radio station or a nice way to manage large playlists on the go. I do like the now playing screen that is full screen and takes you away from the Twitter app-esque view. My last complaint is that they have used Apple’s crappy gray fabric background. It makes me want to scream ever time I see it, “THERE ARE OTHER BACKGROUNDS OUT THERE!!!”. Why companies can’t get away from this, and why Apple keeps putting it everywhere boggles the mind. It’s not only ugly, but doesn’t fit in with anything. It doesn’t make the app more functional or more beautiful. It just makes it one of the sheep, which is a great way to describe the Spotify app.
