The founder of the dutch house scene Eddy De Clercq (RoXY) in the mix for The New Worck! 'Yebo' is a taster of his new compilation of South African Zulu Jive, Xhosa Vocal & Marabi Jive from the period 1972-1985! Eddy De Clercq: "I discovered this collection through a local South African dealer who had no interest in them. He was actually ready to throw out a few boxes of singles he’d purchased from a local township radio station…
Before 1994, during Apartheid days the music of the black community was rarely heard outside the townships. Local musicians and singers were signed to small independent labels, rarely to majors. The distribution of these records was for the local market only and although the music sometimes became local hits these records were rarely heard outside South Africa.
Some of the records in this collection had been censored by the local authorities. Remember that during the South African Apartheid days a strict censorship was applied upon all media. Radio stations had to endure this form of apartheid too, even records became subject and songs on vinyl that were not meeting the strict standards were simply scratched with a nail! Imagine one 45 with one approved side and one side so badly scratched that it was impossible to listen to the music or words…. Not only black music suffered from this practice but also the regular white music that was released or imported into South Africa.
So little is known about the artists on these 45’s that it is hard to write up any stories on the artists or their whereabouts…
