Volkswagen has debuted a concept that is a compact truck with characteristics of the Toyota Tacoma Baja Edition. This truck will not be available to U.S. consumers, but would you be interested in the compact VW concept? Are you satisfied with Toyota’s offerings?

The exterior of the VW Amarok R-Style certainly looks like it can tackle off-road terrain.

>Unveiled at the 2013 Wörthersee Tour tuning event in Austria, the new Volkswagen Amarok R-Style is maent to be their version of an off-road compact truck. While it lacks some of the off-road capability of the Tacoma Baja edition (higher ride, improved suspension), it is built for the European market (i.e., still good on gas). With new styling features, upgraded performance parts and new interior styling, it is an interesting take on what a European compact off-road truck would look like.

The Amarok R-style features “22-inch alloy wheels, lowered springs and a wide-body kit. There are also plenty of carbon fiber accents and a chunky sports bar running across the back of the cab,” according to MotorAuthority.com. The exterior changes are matched with a new interior featuring red styling and LEDs throughout the cab.

This updated interior grabs your attention and either you love it or hate it.

On the performance side, it has a powerful 3.0L V-6 turbo diesel that delivers a peak output of 270 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. As a comparison, the Toyota Tacoma T|X Baja edition in the 4.0L V-6 puts out 236-hp and 266-lb-ft.

Volkswagen has been down this road before when they unveiled there Amarok Canyon at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. That pickup was basically a stronger version of the Amarok. With this second concept, it looks more and more likely that VW is wanting a piece of the action. And they should with very profitable Raptor selling so well that it shocked most of the industry.

As Toyota Tacoma fans, we know that the Tacoma is one rugged and dependable truck. And that there are many modifications out there to make it more of an off-road machine from the stock Baja edition.

It is too bad that this compact truck won’t make to the U.S. It would be great to see more competition in the compact truck market and when there is more competition there is more innovation.

What do you think? Do you think this VW would sell in the U.S.?

In a move that can ONLY be described as disappointing, we’ve learned that the very handsome TRD T|X Baja Series option package and the X-Runner package have been discontinued. According to our information, there is no replacement package coming for either truck.

The Tacoma Baja T|X package has been discontinued.

Speaking with a couple of dealer friends, it seems that the T|X Baja just didn’t sell very well. The high price point was probably the issue, but there is some argument as to whether or not Toyota really gave this package a chance to succeed. Same goes for the X-Runner, as sales have steadily declined on that package.

TRD T|X Baja vs Ford Raptor – Not Really

The Raptor vs. TRD T|X Baja comparison is a fun bit of automotive jousting, but it’s not really useful because:

1. The Raptor is substantially more expensive, with a base MSRP of $43,920. That’s $10k more than an access cab Tacoma with the TRD T|X Baja package.

2. The Tacoma’s smaller footprint arguably makes it a better off-roader in most respects, especially if the owner of this truck spends $10k on upgrading the factory package.

Still, in the minds of some consumers, Toyota’s T|X Baja was a nice answer to Ford’s Raptor. To see Toyota discontinue this model – with no replacement on the horizon – is a disappointment.

Toyota, if you’re reading, it’s foolish to build a truck without a halo model in the stable. Don’t let the penny-pinchers in Japan ruin a great opportunity. A limited-edition off-road model isn’t going to make a lot of money on it’s own, but it can raise the perceived value of the entire line-up.

X-Runner, Your Time Has Come

Tacoma X-Runner package discontinued

While we’re disappointed to see the X-Runner discontinued, this package had a nice run.

If Toyota were to replace this package in a year or two with a new powertrain (something we keep hearing about but have yet to see), that would be a great way to bring it back.

Finally, it’s important to point out that simplifying the product line is often the last thing a manufacturer does before bringing out a new product line. It could be that the Tacoma is getting a redesign a little earlier than we thought…

The truck was modified by Neil Tjin, the founder of the Tjin Edition Roadshow, a collection of smartly modified vehicles that tour the country. Tjin’s vision is simple – modify trucks simplistically and then let them standout.

What makes this truck even more special is that it is being used as part of a giveaway for Universal Technical Institute, Inc. It will be on display at “Torque Meet Tour where the truck will be travelling to 5 of our UTI campuses to be displayed this summer,” according to Mark Harston, UTI motorsports and event marketing manager. The giveaway runs until mid-October.

Using a black color palette, the 2013 Toyota Tacoma received quite a bit of custom interior modifications with seats and steeo mods. It also received the off-road treatment on the exterior with new shocks, bumpers, mud grapplers tires and fenders. Tjin also gave it a custom dual side existing exhaust to amplify the “growl” of the pickup. Rounding out the modifications is a Webasto Sunroof.

For years, Tacoma fans and owners have clamored for better MPG from the pickup. According to the EPA, it will happen by 2025 and it will have a turbocharged engine paired with an 8-speed transmission. Is this really the future?

Is this V-6 engine done for in 2025? Will the Tacoma have a turbocharged 4 cylinder instead?

Edward Nam, director of the EPA’s Light Duty Vehicles & Small Engines Center in Ann Arbor, MI, told WardsAuto at the recent SAE World Congress that turbocharged engines will come to dominate the vehicle market (90 percent of 2025 models will have it). These cars and trucks will be paired with an 8-speed transmission, be more aerodynamic and have improved tires with less rolling resistance.

Turbocharged engines, according to Nam, will get so efficient that they will be widely used in vehicles. This is due to improvements in their brake mean effective measure – the average pressure over a cycle in the combustion chamber. These lighter weight and increased combustion engines will simply have no match.

“So that means that a vehicle like a Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado (pickup truck) being run with a 4-cyl. engine,” Nan told WardsAuto.

The turbocharged engine will dominate so much that all-electric, plug-in hybrid models will only account for 3 percent of the market, Nan said. There will be some diesel varieties in the 2025 market, but they won’t have much impact.

The growth in turbocharged, smaller displacement engines has been interesting to watch unfold. Ford has really taken the charge with many models offering the engine, yet this hasn’t come without criticism. Most notably, Consumer Reports has challenged the EPA numbers from turbocharged engines (see: Consumer Reports story and video below).

There is also some question on the passed along cost to consumers. Nan says that cars should cost $1,800 more than they will in 2016 (his wild guess) and that the “payback” period will be 3.5 years.

The EPA is bascially saying that the next-generation 2025 Toyota Tacoma will come with a turbocharged engine, 8-speed transmission, more aerodynamic exterior and better tires.

What do you think? Do you want a turbocharged Tacoma?
