Fear not. McCain got high coverage, and a lot of the polling is based on predictions of turnout by partisan identification. My suspicion is that all of the polls are undercounting younger African-American votes who are both more likely to vote for Obama AND are harder to reach by landlines, since more rely on cell phones. A lot of city dwellers don't even have land lines any more; I don't. But Obama is hitting those cell numbers like mad; that's why he collected them in the Biden announcement.

What African-American Obama supporter is going to want to give up the opportunity to vote for the first Black president, to be the only one in the family? But Chuck Todd and Rasmussen can't find them in a directory as easily to poll them.

My blog is place for self-gratification, for example. My contributions to "public discourse" are directly related back to my main topic (ME!). The only debate I encourage is on topics like whether I should direct address a colleague's comb-over or leave it alone.

I am being frivolous. The truth is that lots of people do seem to be using the blog as a outreach tool along the lines you're talking about. That's the point of something like RedBlueChristian. I'm trying to get some of that started on dialogue about sex ed at Stork! Stork!, only I haven't exactly reached critical mass with the blog traffic.

I think we can agree that blogs have a potential to isolate people. So do we also agree that there is room for particular norms or architectures that could respond to that potential?

For example, perhaps bloggers should encourage each other to reach out to other bloggers who share very different opinions.

This question presupposes that the point of blogs is to be a space for public debate. I think blogs are just like any other written product, with the same range of purposes and situational ethics and impacts on social discourse and systems.

The problem I have with blogs in the public discourse is the extent to which people can be lulled into believing that participating in exchanges of opinion on blogs can have the same impact as actual physical participation in political life. At their worst, they're like talk radio.

Its like what Gorgias says to Socrates, that rhetoric is the greatest art. Because we cannot understand Everything, we embed facts in narratives that make intuitive sense. So many of our decisions are more based on intuition than we like to admit. The political debate over values is in some sense a debate over what kinds of narratives most accurately describe the world - the stories that say discipline and personal responsibility are best, or the stories that favor compassion and community.

Socrates says rhetoric's irrational power means we shouldn't use it. But he's more than a little disingenuous as he uses fabulously entertaining and convincing rhetorical style himself.

Instead, I think we should emphasize playing with metaphor, allegory, and all kinds of other devices that could help our political discourse become more colorful and in a sense, more honest.

I was going to mention the CSAs, too. I looked at the link provided by Dino Mom and see there is very little CSA activity in Howard County. CSAs, from what I understand, make small, local farming a much more viable profession.

People have to believe in and understand the importance of buying local produce in order for such CSA systems to be effective.

I don't know how to make CSA membership happen more. I'm not even a viable candidate myself, as I have access to a robust vegetable garden, and I supplement that by shopping at the floating HoCo farmers markets; I've been doing this since the market was at OMVC, years back.

I don't remember the exact circumstances, but a decade or so ago, I was doing some research for a client and had to look into farming, a bit. Turns out, there is a "magic number," a percent, of farmland below which, if a geographic region falls, all the farms eventually fall. The local economy and support structure among farmers (supplies, equipment repair, feed, vet care, etc.) needs a certain minimum volume to be viable.

Howard County was, years ago, dangerously close to dipping below that number. I'm not putting myself forth as an expert on the subject. Just as a concerned citizen contributing to a conversation.

I like your thinking, The Speeker, and the underlying need. If I were a betting woman, I'd bet this wouldn't fly in the culture of Howard County. Though I do think the CSA concept, given some substantial strength and PR, could revitalize some local farming.

And from a life conditions perspective, when I look around, I think we're more in a zone of "buy your values" (support farming by BUYING CSA agriculture) rather than "work your values" (by getting your body to a farm). But, that's just one woman's perception. Mine.

I wouldn't change the format of the CNN YouTube debates - Its kind of like a play. The debate as is showed us how our politics should be without actually being the way our politics should be. And it did it in a way that can reach a mass audience. So I think we should take the next steps. Maybe CNN could do features of local governments dealing with issues that confront people across the county. As non television execs, I think a lot can be said for getting committed and involved in local politics and government. The issues may be less romantic, but the people and their problems are just as real. And there's space for Everybody to feel what its like to make a direct impact.

Bill McKibben has a book that might interest you: Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future.

It got a starred review in Booklist, which said: Rather then promoting accelerated cycles of economic expansion—a mindset that has brought the world to the brink of environmental disaster—we should concentrate on creating localized economies: community-scale power systems instead of huge centralized power plants; cohousing communities instead of sprawling suburbs. He gives examples of promising ventures of this type, such as a community-supported farm in Vermont and a community biosphere reserve, or large national park–like area, in Himalayan India, but some of the ideas—local currencies as supplements to national money, for example—seem overly optimistic.

Maybe there's a model in the book for what your co-op farm. Cool idea.
