Whatever the nature of the criticism, one should always remember to approach it positively, taking what is relevant and discarding what is not. Switch off the voice of self doupt and amplify the voice of self respect. Stay focused and in alignment with your vision. Paint your life and begin to get creative; bring out the colors, the shine, and the imagination. Try to look at things from different perspective and enjoy the drama of life around you. Let every scene and incident be the chisel and hammer that is defining and refining the beauty of the idol within; the soul.

This is a wish which has marked the start of grape-harvesting in the Cyclads, over the years. As tradition has it, Vedema (harvesting season) that lasted 20 to 25 days, was a «paint everything red» festival with joy and songs inspired with customs and memories of islanders.

Form Hellas, the local newspaper in 1912, i borrow a characteristic extract, reproduced herebelow, carrying a touch of philosophy on the relation between crushing grapes and popular songs about the loves of grape treaders :

…However, the most interesting part is grape treading. It is the final scene which carries all the power of drama: the poor worker seeing treading fun come to an end, and meaning to make the best of it. In the stuffy and intoxicating atmosphere of the wine-press, exhaustion caused by treading and lack of sufficient sleep, the liveliness and spontaneity of the treaders, their sense of joy and enthusiasm come to a head with continuous singing to the accompaniment of local instruments, the tzabounas.

The treaders” twin-intoxication due to the wrath of wine coupled with rapture caused by treading itself, are enhanced by glances of not not too infrequently visiting ladies and girl-servants or other female auxiliary personnel provocative comings and goings.

The tough treaders then burst into a frenzy as their feet fly about; their swarthy but lively complexion acquires an expression of inspired passion, while their simple hearts explode into verses which they sing in chorus, in a usually monotonous tune whose originality, inspiration and power would have caused envy to the erudite Muse of the city…

Eighty three years later, nearly a century since…Grape-harvesting 1995.

Indeed, so many things have changed. The little donkey of the harvester of yesteryears is now Fiat, the classical steelyard and quaint little weights have yielded ground to the automatic metal grape can, while the traditional wooden squeezer of the “Kanava” has been replaced by pneumatic presses in modern wineries, and the cask used in winemaking is now a rust-proof tank coated with refrigeration insulators.

As for the small window of the underground kanava, it is no longer to be seen in air conditioned, temperature controlled fermentation chambers. Lightning changes of society and technology have led part of our sensitivities to be sacrificed on the altar of quality.

Every work is the result of a dialogue between its creator and the chosen material. For this reason, I have to plan the same thing many times over, in the hope that at some moment I shall see symbols in front of me. Then, perhaps, a new dialogue between the person who looks at them and the symbols will lead to something which I had not originally foreseen. This is the magic of the work of art, which in the end, may say something over and above what it shows.

Mr North-Wind blows in order to wander;
he sends a sad message to all harbors:
Schooners that sail, galleys that set out,
enter your harbors because I’ll blow,
I’ll blow over the Earth and over the sea,
over the Earth and over the East,
I’ll turn cities into grief and castles into ruins
and those ships I’ll find in mid-seas, I’ll cast on land.
Those ships that listened, all sought a harbor,
but a Cretan ship answered him:
I’m not afraid of you, Mr-North Wind,
no matter how you blow,
for I have bronze masts and steel antennas,
for I have sails made of silk from Proussa,
for I have cables made of a blonde maiden’s hair,
for I have choice sailors who are all brave lads,
for I have a young sailor who knows the elements.
