Interview with comedian, actor, voice artist and co-founder of the edgy, dark and surreal sketch comedy troupe Kids in the Hall, Kevin McDonald. Kids in the Hall brought us 5 seasons of ground-breaking sketch comedy, the feature film Brain Candy, live tours, and mini-series Death Comes to Town. I spent my formative years watching Kids reruns after school, and learned that a lot was possible with sketch comedy. I was delighted to meet Kevin and learn that he is not only an incredible talent, but also kind, generous and humble.

Kevin and I discuss the process by which the Kids wrote a new weekly sketch show before the TV series (and to some degree during and after) by improvising pitches to refine them into sketches, the dynamics of the Kids writers’ room that led to such gifts as their inspired monologues, and the confidence of experience that allows Kevin to improvise with such ease.

After the interview, we improvise a short scene and Kevin describes how he might instruct students to write it into a sketch, then Kevin takes questions from the audience. Here's video of our improv.

We refer to a number of Kids in the Hall sketches throughout the interview that I am including here for reference:

King of Empty Promises

Trappers

Surprise Party

Asshole / Apollo the Rude

Things to Do

Faux Pas

Brian and Kevin talk about how, since moving back to Chicago, Kevin has come to admire premise-based improv and teach it as a core way to approach scenes, particularly later in Harold. He talks about his view of games and turning an unusual moment into a game (and how they are not the same thing). We played a few scenes, focusing on using edits to heighten character's game from the previous scene. It went ok and led to a fantastic discussion! We talked about Del's process and its influences on Jethro's own work, specifically about getting rid of preconceptions about the form and the scene and allowing anything that happens to be a part of the work.</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>true</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>01:05:13</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/511db8c9e4b06f6f68aa0c70/1363284012574-YMDH3YODRTBKZYODQ3FS/logo.jpg?format=1500w"/>

<itunes:keywords>improv,improvisation,comedy,interview,Pittsburgh,improv,theater,pittsburgh,improv,sketch,funny,theater,improv,theater,brian,gray,talking,shop</itunes:keywords>

006 - Benjamin Amiri - Dedication, being there in the scene, and direct and kind coaching

Benjamin Amiri began his improv career at free Irony City workshops in 2008 and his blossomed into a talented player, sought-after coach and introspective articulator about his work.
In this premier episode, Brian talks to SCIT Teacher and performer and comedy nerd Greg Gillotti. We discuss Greg's performance style as a devotedly supportive player and how he doesn't feel like he is one, his tools for getting out of writer/director mode, his research and preparation for coaching the Nebby Spectres into a narrative arc, and his creation of shows based on catchy names. We perform a series of scenes in which Brian keeps trying to give Greg objects and kisses and Greg keeps begrudgingly welcoming hobos into his barn. Then we talk about the set and Greg answers some great questions from the crowd.

The set itself has some more visual aspects, here is a video for those who'd like to watch it:
https://vimeo.com/63020968

During the interview Greg mentions a book about improvising narrative: How to Improvise a Full Length Play: The Art of Spontaneous Theater by Kenn Adams.

In this first brief episode of Talking Shop, host Brian Gray summarizes the format and goals of the podcast and gets listeners excited about the first full episode, being recorded in front of a live audience on March 22 at 11pm at the Steel City Improv Theater in Shadyside.

The first episode will feature Greg Gillotti, a teacher and performer at the Steel City Improv Theater, creator of such memorable shows as The Death Show and Cold Soup, and a huge comedy nerd.

In Talking Shop, Brian Gray talks improv with improvisers. He gets deep into his guest's relationship with their work: what is driving them right now? What gets them charged up to start new scenes? New project? How do they go about forming teams? And so on.

And since he often interviews teachers and coaches, he gets them to teach him how they like to play. Each show will feature a short set with Brian and his guest playing the way that guest likes to play.

This is all recorded in front of a live audience at the Steel City Improv Theater once a month.

http://brianmgray.com/podcast/

<itunes:author>Brian Gray</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>A brief introduction to the Talking Shop podcast.
