I'm not a fan of Palm never have been, never will be so when I came across the news last week of Apple sticking it to Palm I got a good laugh out of it. When Palm announced the Palm Pre aka "the new iPhone Killa", one of the features I noticed was the ability to sync with iTunes. I thought to myself why would Apple allow a competing smart phone to use iTunes, that won't last long. Well Apple pulled the plug even quicker then I imagined. Last week Apple had officially confirmed that it has disabled the ability of devices pretending to be iPods to sync with iTunes.

"iTunes 8.2.1 is a free software update that provides a number of important bug fixes," says Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. "It also disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. As we've said before, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players."

Palm's answer suggested that users not upgrade to the new version of itunes! I'm sure Palm is sitting there scratching their heads saying, boss what do we do now?

Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox said. "Palm's media sync works with iTunes 8.2. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we can consider."

Certain iPhone users will appreciate the release of ultrasn0w version 0.9 from the dev team. This update appears to have eliminated most of the prior issues some users were reporting. The dev team also provided a few tips of the more common questions, below are a few:

Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup”instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you. This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time. Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings. Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.

Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, but don’t outsmart redsn0w into thinking you don’t need hacktivation! If you don’t plan on using an official sim, don’t activate via iTunes with such a sim. Just keep your unofficial sim at all times and let redsn0w and ultrasn0w handle hacktivation

Don't eat ultra yellow sn0w (j/k, this is my tip)

Read the rest here: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Benefits of Ultrasn0w v0.9

Works on both 3G and 3GS

Works on hacktivated devices

Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device

Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever. (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out).

Doesn’t install any additional daemon

Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues

Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition

According to the Wall Street Journal Apple has snapped up 20% of the cell phone industry profits while only holding a tiny 1% of the market share. Research in Motion has come in second by snagging an estimated 18% of hardware profits and 2% of total unit sales. The main reason for out of this world profits is Apple supposedly receives about $400 in carrier subsidy for each iPhone sold. Apple is set to report earnings after the bell tomorrow. I believe with the release of the new iPhone 3GS these estimated numbers are just to low and Apple will blow out these numbers. We will have more tomorrow so stay tuned!

A report released July 17th by the China Business network indicates Hon Hai/Foxconn (the world’s largest manufacturer of electronics components and Apple’s long-time partner) helped to get this deal completed. Hon Hai also known by the name Foxconn will build a special version of the iPhone without Wi-Fi integrated allowing Apple to bypass Beijing's restrictions on handsets that support high speed internet access.

In a mobile Q&A from iPhonAsia editor Dan Butterfield says:

"I believe we are at the beginning stages of a mobile revolution"

“There are over 700 million wireless consumers in China. The majority are youthful, status conscious, and they want to own cool smartphones loaded with the latest apps/games and mobile technologies that allow them to interact with one another.

“While incomes are lower in China compared to western markets, China still has tremendous consuming power. There are an estimated 340,000 millionaires in China and there is also a growing middle-class. An estimated 290 million Chinese households can be classified as middle-class with monthly incomes ranging from 5,000 CNY to 15,000 CNY ($732 to $2,196 USD). Chinese tend to save a relatively high share of their monthly take home pay. Rainy day savings can sometimes be spent on more expensive items, particularly if the product has status and is used every day … think iPhone.

“All of this adds up to a tremendous potential market for Apple’s iPhone. Using conservative estimates, I believe Apple can capture a full 2% share of the wireless market in China within the first 12 months of an official iPhone launch. That’s 14 million iPhones and perhaps another 2 million or so coming via grey-market iPhone sales.”

No more worries about the local pizza dude taking your order down wrong because now it's all up to you. The new app turns the dreaded task of ordering a pizza into playing a video game. You create your own pizza by dragging and dropping the toppings, shrinking or enlarging the size, shaking the chicken wings with the amount and type of sauce desired , and finally pull a coupon off the virtual fridge to save some dough. To help pass the time while your waiting for food to arrive Pizza Hut has included a bonus game called "Hut Racer".

The most common question I've been asked lately by friends and family that use me for my extensive knowledge of all technology (basically I'm a total geek) is "Should I purchase or upgrade to the new iPhone? Is it worth it? Should I wait for the next revision?" I've decided to lay out the fine details and specifications between the two models. First of all if you are purchasing a new phone or becoming a new customer of AT&T hands down go with the iPhone 3GS. You won't regret it! I think the 16gb is a great entry level phone but for die hard iPod or iPhone users should probably opt for the new 32gb model. Apple has jazzed up the iPhone 3GS with a few new features apple fanatics will really appreciate. The 3.0 megapixel autofocus with macro mode and auto white balance improves the camera functions a tab but the new Video Capability with 30fps VGA and on-device editing capability is way cool. For gamers the new iPhone 3GS now supports Open GL ES 2.0 which should allow for improve graphics and 3d. The processor has also been upgraded from 600Mhz compared to the 412Mhz process used in the standard iPhone 3G. Battery life has been improved slightly and that's always a plus! A couple of other cool features for the 3GS include: Nike support, Magnetic Compass, Water & Oil Resistand Finish, Voice Contraol: Dialing, music control and the new wireless technology 7.2Mps HSDPA which should allow for faster web speed in the future.

Bottom line, the iPhone 3GS is a must for anyone signing up with a new plan, new phone, iGamer or true iPhone enthusiast. If your not eligible for a phone upgrade at the good price, don't sweat it and just wait a little longer!

Full manual exposure. Maybe this is possible for third party developers with the API

Manual focus -- being able to input a focus distance.

Ability to change focus while recording. Being able to program pull focus would be great.

Apps! Something that allows you to cut clips, add titles/effects in the phone!

And the obivious one, HD.

What do you think of the iPhone 3GS video recorder? What improvements would you like to see made? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
