Develop apps for Infybit (at least 10 apps)

Bringing my dream project to life

And finally learning python and perl.

Introduction to Java : James Gosling was the creator of Java initially called Oak in June 1991 . Java is mainly Application Programming Language . which is used for developing applications like

Desktop Application(J2SE)

With recent technology innovation of Open source Mobile Operating System Android ,entire Android application platform is developed using Java.

Lets try to understand the difference between an Application Programming and System Programming

Application programming language basically are intended for developing applications which provides services to users and Application program directly interacts with system software . Ex Notepad

System programming is used for providing services to the underlying physical hardware device. Ex. All device driver applications.

Analogy :

→ Word Pad is Application Program which provides service for user in writing content in digitized format .

→ Word Pad application in turn calls the System program methods perform I/O functionalities through System calls present in device drivers (system program) . These System program interact with the physical hardware to convert the word pad content into file storage .

Platform Independence in Java

Distinguishing feature of Java from other programming language by its platform Independent feature. Other languages are platform dependent as shown in analogy

→ Platform dependent Analogy in programming languages

In case of other programming languages like C,C++ etc

→ when a file which contains program is compiled by the respective compilers to produce an Object Code or Object file which is Specific to particular Operating System and in turn this Object file is run or executed by CPU to machine level code (binary 0’s and 1’s).

→ Platform Independent Analogy in Java

Above diagram and analogy explains how Java is Platform Independent

→ The Java source file or program say test.java will be compiled by the compiler to produce the intermediate byte code , which is universal and the output of test.java is test.class which is platform independent (test.class can be run on any device which has the Java Virtual Machine which is specific to Operating System ) .

→ test.class can be run on
Desktop PC which has Java Virtual Machine
Mobile Phones which has Java Virtual Machine
Washing Machine (Embedded System)
→ Java is platform independent because of Java Virtual Machine . This JVM will convert the Java’s class file or byte code ,i.e test.class which is platform independent to test.o whichis platform dependent.

In Part 2 of “Art of learning Java ” will be explaining about the Installation Procedure of Java ,IDE and also kick start with writing our First Program using Java . And Java Virtual Machine will be taken in depth in my up coming articles .

Python Days: Understanding Basics – Part 2

In the previous part we learnt about the introduction to python, installing it and finally writing a program to print “Hello World”. That was a great start but now we all go on the real part.

Data Types:

The representation of a value is said to be a data type. Well to be clear what will you call this “1” as, it’s obviously a number so we are representing 1 as number. This is what data type is. There is several data type that we use every time during our programming, some familiar ones are

Integer – It can be any (negative or positive) number without any Decimal Point
E.g.: -12
Float – It can be any (negative or positive) number with a Decimal Point
E.g.: 23.22
String – A group of characters including numbers
E.g.: My Name is Raghunath.J

There are still other different data types and you will discover them very shortly.

Variable:

A variable is just a memory to store your data values. To identify these memories we just give them a name. The value in the variable is nothing but called as data types.

Identifiers:

Name itself says, identifying something. Variable is the best example for an identifier.

There are some rules you need to follow when you are using identifiers.

Must Start with a Alphabet (Upper or lower case) or with an underscore (‘_’)

Example: a, Raf, _rt, a434

The names are case sensitive. That is hello and Hello are totally different and they are never related to each other.

Give a try:

Which are valid and which are not?

A, __34, _4e, _!ss,#rt, raghu,raghu332, r_565, ^ss

Objects

As I have already said python is an object oriented programming. So everything in the program is referred as object.

To be very clear here is an example

“I brought a Car”

Here “Car” is an object. So please remember that something is always named as object.

Now we learnt something about data types, variables, identifiers and object. Let us write a simple example programming.

#  To add two numbers
a = 12
b = 20
c = a + b
print(a)
print(b)
print(“Total”,c)

The output for the above code will be

12
20
Total 32

Explanation of the above code:

Line 1: Added a comment stating that the code will add two numbers (i.e. data type).

Line 2: Assigning constant value 12 to a variable “a”

Line 3: Assigning constant value 20 to a variable “b”

Line 4: Printing the value stored in a. In this line you can observe that we are not using Quotes. If in case we use quotes the result of this line will not be 12 instead it will be a.

Line 5: Printing the value stored in b.

Line 6: Adding the values present in variable a and b and storing it in c. We are using a operator + between a and b. We will learn more about the operator a bit later.

Line 7: Printing the value present in c. We will learn more about displaying in the future episodes.

Hope you understood what is happening in the above example. In .net and other high level programming language we need to assign a data type to the variable before we use them.

Example in VB.net
<

>Dim a, b, c as Integer

But in Python we didn’t assign any data type to a, b or c but it understood that these variable belongs to Integer data type by seeing the values.

How can it understand?

In Line 2: a =12, we know that 12 is an integer and = means assigning the value 12 to a (more about = will be said later) so python interpreter understood that the variable should be taken as Integer

But instead if the line 2 was replaced as a = “12” then it would be considered that as string because we are using quotes between the numbers. This is one of the added advantages in Python at the same time there might be even disadvantages.

Now we have learnt the usage and proper meaning of variables and data types. Let us write one more code but this time let us use another command called input for users to input a number.

# Accept user input values and add them
print(“Enter a number: “)
a = int(input())
print(“Enter another number: “)
b = int(input())
c = a + b
print(“Total is “,c)

Output for the above code will be

Enter a number:
10
Enter another number:
12
Total is 22

Explanation for the above code

Line 1: Adding a comment

Line 2: Printing Enter a number on the monitor

Line 3: Requesting user to enter a number and assigning that value to a. Here we are using input() command and interpreter will understand that it must wait for user to enter something before proceeding to execute the next line.

In the same line we are using int. This is done because the input will take user input as raw unassigned value. So we need to first convert it to Integer so we use as int(input()).Hope that understands.

After converting the value to integer we assign it to a

Line 4: Again Printing Enter another number on the monitor

Line 5: Doing the same step which line 3 does but the new value will be stored in b

Line 6: adding a and b and storing the result in c

Line 7: Displaying the Result.

We will be learning more about input in later episodes.

The above code can be written even like this:

# Accept user input values and add them
print(“Enter a number: “)
a = input()
print(“Enter another number: “)
b = input()
c = int(a) + int(b)
print(“Total is “,c)

Try to add two numbers in experimenting in other ways.

Operators

Mathematics is very important in programming we keep on using these operators to perform some job. We already used two operators i.e. + and =

Here are some of the operators, meanings and how they are used.

Hi everyone it has been long time to write a technical post on TOS. I have been learning Python (a high level programming language) these days and decide to write tutorial in the form of posts and i name it as “Python Days“. I will be writing it in clear English so that any one can understand it.

The main purpose of the writing is to improve my programming skills and at the same time contributing my knowledge to others.

Who should read?

Any one can read this, whether you are totally new to python or programming language or if you are planning to just brush up your python skills.

Introduction to Python:

Python is a programming language, but a high level programming language which is much similar to other high level programming languages like JAVA, .NET, RUBY.

So i think you came to know what it is.. well its a high level programming language.

So what is High Level??

If you are new to programming itself then this is for you. High level language is something like you and me can easily understand when we see the code. Technically speaking it uses english like statement so that programming on this kind of language is fast, flexible and also leads to very less errors and even zero.

But why High Level?

Initially, those days’ people used to write in machine level / assembly level languages. Machine level language is the one which only machine can understand. There are only two characters “0″ and “1″. And they say if its “0″ then it is “OFF” if its “1″ then its “ON”.

But writing a machine language is tough, face lot of errors and was too much difficult to understand.

So people started a new intermediate language called Assemble Level language.

This again used a little bit English like words and this was in-turn converted to Machine Level Language by assemblers.

A little example of Assembly level language (adding two numbers)

MOV EAX, A
MOV EBX, B
ADD EAX, EBX
MOV C, EAX

So in the above example we are adding the value in A to the value in B and finally saving into C.

The above syntax is little bit clear for programmers. But still it takes lot of lines to code. We use some registries to store the values temporarily. ie EBX, EAX. These two are registries and I am not going to explain about them, because it’s not necessary.

We come across MOV (i.e. Move) to move the value form A to EAX

And another word ADD (i.e. Addition) to add the values that are stored in the registry.

Final Notes: We move the value from A to a registry and B value to another registry and finally add both the values and save it to C.

It’s done. Even thought it looks easy for adding two numbers, but it’s difficult to program something powerful. It takes lot of line to code; we need to think about the memory and lot more.

Now the High Level Language:

High level language uses English like statements. There are compilers which convert high level language to machine level. They are coded in common English and uses simple mathematical notations.

Here is an example of High Level Language to add two numbers:

c = a + b

So it’s very easy as you see. Adds a and b, saves the result to c. High level language reduced the lines of code. And any normal person by reading it can understand it.

So hope you understood the Level of Languages. Now back to Introduction to Python.

Python is a high level language. It’s a cross platform support i.e. works on Windows, MAC, Linux and it’s even been ported to Java and .net Virtual Machines.

Its a open source community driven language, and most importantly it is Object Oriented, automatically manages memory (where as in Assembly level you need to manage memory) unlike Perl even python is well know being used as scripting language.

Python was implemented by Guido van Rossum in mid 1980’s. To know more about it then just jump to Wikipedia.

Python is being used in several fields.

2. Installing & Running Python

To install python just go to the download page of the python website. Click here and download it according to your OS. I have downloaded the Windows Installer as i will be using Windows. Currently there is python 3.1.1 and i am using the same version.

Installing is as simple as installing a software. Just click the installer and it will do the rest for you.

Now we have installed. Let us start Python.

Python requires any text editor to write our code and then later we can execute it through DOS (or terminal).

So which editor to choose?

You can choose any kind of editor, a normal notepad, but it is recommended to try syntax highlighting editors like Notepad++. Well I will be using Pythons own Shell called IDLE (it’s a python GUI shell written in python itself). That’s more than enough. And it comes bundled with Python. I came to know IDLE is not found in LINUX, if so you can download it from this link: http://love-python.blogspot.com/2008/03/install-idle-in-linux.html

IDLE is a kind of IDE. Using IDE really helps us to manage programming in later stages more easier.

As soon as you start IDLE you get this:

Python 3.1.1 (r311:74483, Aug 17 2009, 17:02:12) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] on win32
Type “copyright”, “credits” or “license()” for more information.

This actually tells the version of python and its platform. At the last line you can see “>>>” that notifies you to put some input.

3. Totally Basics

Now we are ready to start writing our first basic code. Let us start our first most used example of every programming language “Hello World”

In the IDLE click File > New Window

A New Window opens up. This is where you actually write your code

Now write this code

# Printing Hello World Text
print(“Hello World”)

Now save it by clicking File > Save and save it as “helloworld.py”. Please note that you have to save the code in .py extension.

Now Click Run > Run Module or (press F5) to run the code and you can see the out put as

Hello World

A little explanation of what the code actually does.

Question: What we need to do?
Answer: We need to display “Hello world”.

Line 1 in the above code shows a comment. Any line which starts with a # is said to be comment. And using comment in any language is very important. It helps us in many ways to identify what the code does and also us for any modifications to be made in the future.

Line 2 is where the actual code starts. We are using the python “print” command, this command is used to display the data (can be on your monitor or printer). As we can see the print command is followed by (‘Hello World’) where the quotation represents the string. We will learn about Strings in the later session. The command tells that it needs to print the characters which are in the Quotes.

Hence forth we are able to output on the screen as Hello World when we run the module.

So we just to learn how to write a simple Hello World programming on python. But this is just a starting point. In this code we learnt a bit about print. But there is much more you will be learning later.

Give a Try:

Now give a try by your own. Write a code to display “I am a fan of Talk on Something”

Printing the same Hello World in separate lines:

In the above Hello World program when we execute it as

Hello World

But now we need to get the output of each word in separate line.

Hello
World

To do this we use escape sequence

Here is the modified code

# Printing Hello World Text in Separate lines
print(“Hello\n World”)

And this result will be:
Hello
World

In Line 2 we can see we have used an escape sequence “\n” between Hello and World. \n helps us to create New Line.

Here are several other escape sequences you need to get to know

Escape Sequence	Meaning
\n	Create New Line
\t	Horizontal Tab, moves the pointer to the next tab stop
\r	Carriage Return
\a	Alert (alarm)
\b	Backspace
\’	Print a Single Quote
\”	Print a Double Quote
\\	Print a Backslash

Now give a try by your own using the above escape sequences and get to know what outputs you get.
