Mansions On the Moon are officially one of my favorite projects of 2010. So fucking dope. I always have conversations with people regarding authenticity of music, and what constitutes a dope record. I don't care how many times you say it, ~~Lady Gaga~~ is not good, her music is not liberating, there's nothing mind blowing about it, matter of fact, I'd rather listen to the racket my crackhead neighbours down the street on Sherbourne are making. If you don't agree with my opinion, that's fine, I probably never cared about your opinion either. Music Should be created to withstand the test of time, and lets face it, a lot of is not.

But, there'll always be a handful of artists who aren't willing to compromise their sound for the sake of popularity and fad, and I applaud you. Everyone else, go play on the railroad tracks.

Few shows excite me anymore; shitty plot structure, regurgitated actors, horrible soundtracks, the list can go on, & trust me I would love to sit here & attempt to rip Hollywood a new one but that's besides the point.

I'm quite content with not being that asshole blogger that thinks the the world he lives in is not as infinitely amazing as his blog is.

This is why I want to dedicate a post & applaud HBO (& association) for creating 'How to Make It In America'. This show doesn't necessarily have anything outstanding;& partially this is why I think it works. No large ass budget, no A-list actors, hardly any blatant cameos, and no corn fillers. I can personally say that I found a definite connection to the show. We all know what it's like to have a few hours of sleep a night, what it's like to repeatedly get shut down, and how difficult it is to find perseverance after months, sometimes years of the same old bull. I can't believe I'm saying this; I found inspiration in a TV show.

So before I leave you with my two cents, hear me out. Have a good time while you're young. You'll never be 24 again. Go travel, chase women, have a one night stand, read Tolstoy, create a clothing line, put out an album, run for Mayor. Don't let life's intricacies hold you down because your day to day seems to be kicking your ass. Pain is temporary; so is heart break, & sometimes crabs, so watch the fuck out.

Success is a journey, not a destination.

Spotlight: Slakah the Beatchild

We're starting a new weekly on the blog. Every week there will be a write up dedicated to an artist we feel is providing some sort of nourishment & backbone to today's music.

There is no better person to start this off than Canada's music extraordinaire, Slakah the Beatchild. I was lucky enough to meet this dude a few years back, and over the years he's proven himself to be a dependable, consistent, and over all great dude.

The tricky part about being a producer, artist, engineer & video director is that you have to manage multiple careers. I came up in the game as a producer, but I enjoyed writing songs & performing so much that I slowly made my voice heard on recordings, I then developed a strong interest in audio engineering. I’m a big audio geek, I love talking studio talk.

I spent many years learning the ropes working at Phase One Studios. While there I had the privilege of meeting so many great artists & engineers such as Bono (U2), Sting, Mos Def, Randy Bachman (The Guess Who) & so many more. That period of my quest in all of this was essential to knowledge of the music industry.

Built up in a very grassroots manner, Slakah has etched his way into music's sometimes seemingly tough exterior. No large studios, no record budget, no allocated marketing expenses, just a consistency and pureness which is instantly evoked through his music.

Kudos Slak's, you are this week's spotlight artist.

Babble Goons - The Goon, The Bad, and The Ugly

The year is 2004. End of June. It was a hot day and the beer had to be really cold as we're awaiting for the arrival of HighDuke and a collective he only referred to as "the Russians". As they pull up to Scribe's house (then a frequent gathering place for the goons in Hamilton) and he gets out of the car he's holding a brown paper bag and inside was a bottle of... well I never found out as he never took it out of the bag.

What happened after that are fond and fading memories, and they include the first of many collective recording sessions in a makeshift studio in Scribe's bedroom (using his closet as a 'soundproof booth'), and lots of various drunken debauchery worth only mentioning in the presence of the involved.

Around that time Scribe and HighDuke formed the Babble Goons. They called it hooligan hip-hip. Lots of liquor, inappropriate behavior (i.e. HighDuke lectures me on black holes and quantum physics while intoxicated... true story), an album, more booze and quite some time later, the line-up has changed.

In no particular order:

HighDuke got promoted, respectively only answers to HighDuke Don Fakaroun;
That nice Irish fella, DJ Grusm, made some cuts on the album and never left;
Scribe went solo, quit rap, then records few dope tracks, then quits (more on him later);
Lits draws a nice logo, and Babble Babes proudly display it on their boobs, I mean t-shrits;
Came Earthquake Slick (also a very cheerful guy, seriously);
Surge Bigavac quits soccer (not really) and joins the team Goons.

I have to admit, I'm a late boomer when it comes to the internet. To me it was a lot easier to make a mixtape using two cassette players and to go crate digging with friends at garage sales and the few record stores in the area than it is to find the next big thing before it tours the world via the internet. Even beating my 17 year old sister and her friends to it is hard enough. Well, most of the time... considering their questionable taste in music.

Same goes for Milan Stankovic (sevdahBABY) an architect by trade, who already performed at the before mentioned EXIT Festival in Novi Sad in 2007 and 2009, got hundreds of thousands hits on YouTube, and received massive airplay in the Balkans before I got the news... DJ Scuffs presents Local Sounds depicted what amazing talent our city,

Toronto, has to offer. Polysh and I decided to go and we enjoyed every

minute of it. Every aspect of this event was well-executed. The crowd was

supportive, friendly and everyone was there to have a good time. The venue,

the College Street Bar was perfect as it provided an intimate setting for

Toronto talent to truly shine. Dj Scuffs on the turntables was also the

host of this event.Now for the talent. Shi Wisdom is an up and coming

songstress that you definitely need to look out for. With a voice that

can be described as a cross between Teedra Moses, Jasmine Sullivan and

Chrisette Michele, she reminds us of that soulful, feel good music that

we so rarely hear. Toronto rapper, Element, performed and I can say that

i was truly impressed. Before he started rapping and they announced that

he would be coming on, everyone that was sitting, stood up and came to the stage.

At this point, i was really impressed with his following, and this guy

almost knocked me down to get to the front of the stage. He is extremely

talented and reminds you that Toronto has many talented local lyricists other

than Drake (whom we love btw). Other noteworthy performers include Teddy F. House,

Wolf J. McFarlane and Carmela Antonio. Special thanks to Dj Scuffs as he showed us

tremendous love and respect.
