Twenty-two educators from communities in which the company operates have been selected to participate in an Earthwatch expedition focused on climate change or oceans preservation. This is an invaluable experience intended to be transferred to the classroom and shared with students year after year. “There is a growing concern regarding the number of students in the United States entering science, technology, engineering and mathematic careers,” said Sandra Evers-Manly, president of the Northrop Grumman Foundation. “One way to reverse that trend is to make science and math fascinating and applicable for students. We are proud to partner with Earthwatch to offer this educator program to our 2009 participants.”

To accomplish that goal, the Northrop Grumman Foundation partnered with Earthwatch Institute to develop two expeditions that will provide educators with a hands-on professional development opportunity, which will ultimately impact students’ math and science education and help create the next generation of environmental ambassadors.

Eleven of the teacher awardees have been assigned to an expedition that will help preserve coastal ecology in the Bahamas, while 11 others are joining an expedition that will monitor climate change at the edge of the Arctic. The Bahamas expedition teams will focus on research sites at the archipelago’s southern islands of Long Island, Great Exuma and Great Inagua. The Arctic project will take teachers to Churchill, Canada, on the coast of the Hudson Bay near the geographical center of the North American continent.

The scholarship recipients were selected through a competitive application process. All middle school teachers from respective communities were eligible to apply. The applicant’s geographic region, potential contribution to the research, and follow-up curriculum plans were all taken into consideration. Criteria used to assign educators to expeditions included interests, skills, and availability, along with project need.

The Northrop Grumman Foundation supports diverse and sustainable programs for students and teachers. These programs create innovative education experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Further, 47 percent say college plans are a higher priority than retirement savings (41 percent).

This marks the first time in three years a majority of parents are putting their children’s college ahead of their own golden years. In fact, last year parents favored building their nest eggs (47 percent) over education funding (42 percent). The survey also reveals men are more likely to put their children’s education (50 percent) ahead of their retirement (38 percent) than women.

“While saving for near-term financial goals may seem like a good idea in uncertain times, be sure you are not doing so at the expense of your retirement,” says Keith Brannan, vice president of financial security planning for COUNTRY Financial. “You can borrow money for college, but you cannot borrow for retirement. Balancing your nest egg with the rising costs of college is a concern for many, so review and update your financial plan as your family’s needs change.”

College Cost a Greater Concern than Children Leaving Home

Despite the rising costs, 79 percent still think college is a good investment. However, the high price tag causes anguish among parents. In fact, 65 percent say the cost of college causes more of a concern for them than the thought of their child leaving home (24 percent).

While the cost of college might cause a great deal of concern for parents, it may not be top of mind for their children. Two-thirds (67 percent) of parents say their kids do not have an understanding of how much college will cost.

“This is a reminder of how important it is to teach our children about finances as early as possible,” says Brannan. “Getting our children to understand the cost of their education early on will help them develop good financial habits later as adults.”

Tips for saving for college in this economy:

    * Maintain a well-diversified portfolio. Because of the short window to accumulate funds and the shorter window to distribute them, try to invest at the proper risk level for the age of your child. Many college investment methods offer age-based models which are tailored to when your child attends college.
* If you had been investing too aggressively and lost a significant amount in these tough financial times, now is not the time to get more aggressive. Instead, try to find other ways to pay for college, like grants or low-interest loans. Starting today, the company will begin featuring “Trainee Profiles,” which showcase the successes people obtain when they attend the Training Program.

The Profiles, published on the company’s website, will offer brief case studies from students and graduates of Somatic Systems’ Professional Training Program, describing the ways in which the training program has benefited them. Several Profiles will highlight how much or how quickly students recouped their investment of tuition. The Professional Training Program is Somatic Systems’ highest priced service, but is considered to be of great value: At $12,000 per student, it offers a complete career retraining (or can serve as a supplement to an existing healthcare practice or other career) at a price much lower than most other similar or lesser opportunities — and it does so in the $90 billion per year and growing industry of pain management.

“In today’s tough economic times, some are naturally hesitant to leap into a new endeavor. However, it is exactly in these times that Somatic Systems’ Professional Training Program is a stronger value than ever,” stated CEO Steven Aronstein. “Professionals, aspiring professionals, those seeking career changes, and even those looking to supplement their current situations who have attended our program know this well, and we are pleased to be able to share their stories of success with others who could also benefit from our Professional Training.” The company has recently been working to increase the value of their career training further, through television coverage as well as work with the US military towards providing pain care services and obtaining coverage by Tricare military health insurance, which covers over 70 million soldiers, veterans, and families.

The Trainee Profiles section can be found on the website starting today, at http://somatics.org/training/profiles.

The first Profile features David Bilyeu, a professional Toy Designer who easily made a successful mid-life career change to Somatics by taking the Somatic Systems Institute Professional Training. Other students’ stories will follow later this season.

In addition to the relatively detailed Profiles, shorter testimonials from students about their experience of the quality of Somatic Systems’ Training Program can also be found on the company’s website at http://somatics.org/training/cse/testimonials.

INTELECOM was also recognized as a Finalist in the Best Education Solution category.

“We are very pleased to receive a CODiE award which represents a milestone in our 40-year history in distance education,” said Glenn Kammen, president of INTELECOM Intelligent Telecommunications. “It validates our strategy and approach to both content development and delivery in the age of online and mobile learning.”

The INTELECOM Online Resources Network is a digital content repository and searchable database of short academic video clips. Made available as a subscription streaming service, the INTELECOM Online Resources Network is designed to meet the growing need for rich media in support of online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes offered at post-secondary institutions and virtual high schools. Without such a service, educators wishing to use media must undergo a lengthy process of Internet searching in which results are far from guaranteed. Additionally there are usually ambiguous copyright as well as captioning issues to worry about, and links that clearly feature another institution and that can become obsolete.

“There is so much demand for rich media in support of learning and lots of ways to serve it up. The challenge we faced in developing our service was how to do so in a way that has real value to educators,” said Cameron Cox, Vice President at INTELECOM. “To receive the CODiE award from our peers, many of whom are in education, is just a tremendous honor.”

The CODiE Awards hold the distinction of being the industry’s only peer-reviewed awards program, which provides member companies with a unique opportunity to earn praise from their competitors. Now in its twenty-fourth year, the CODiE Awards program has raised the standard for excellence and serves as prestigious representation of outstanding achievement and vision in the software and information industry.

“Now in its 24th year, the CODiE Awards continue to recognize those companies providing the best new technology products and services across a broad array of industries,” noted SIIA President Ken Wasch. “In addition, its winners are a prolific testament to the power of technology to deliver innovative solutions to businesses and consumers. SIIA warmly congratulates all of the winners and nominees of the CODiE Awards, whose innovation is essential for continuing America’s leadership in the global knowledge economy,” Wasch continued.
