May 29: Deputies arrested a suspect after he allegedly threatened and assaulted deputies during the execution of a misdemeanor warrant and caused significant damage to a BSO vehicle.

May 29: A white 2022 Honda Accord was reported stolen overnight from a Tamarac residence. A statewide BOLO was issued.

May 29: A man over 65 was reportedly struck while sleeping by his domestic partner, who was arrested on a felony domestic battery charge involving a person 65 years or older.

May 29: Someone attempted to use a Tamarac woman’s debit card to make two fraudulent purchases totaling more than $2,100 after she shopped at Walmart Neighborhood Market. The transactions were unsuccessful.

May 29: A vehicle sustained damage to both rear tires in an act of criminal mischief, with repairs estimated at $465.

May 29: A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody after allegedly punching his mother in the face during a domestic disturbance.

May 28: Janeel Jamar Jacobs, 38, was arrested on a cocaine possession warrant.

May 28: Dwight Beckford, 48, was arrested on a felony sexual battery charge.

Tamarac Community Center {City of Tamarac}

The City of Tamarac invites residents to attend a public meeting to learn about and provide feedback on the proposed Northwest 57th Street Roadway Improvement Corridor Project, from Pine Island Road to University Drive.

The meeting will take place Thursday, June 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd.

City officials will present information about a proposed REV grant application intended to advance Tamarac’s long-term vision for the corridor.

The meeting will also provide residents with an opportunity to ask questions and share feedback, both of which are required components of the grant application process.

According to the city, staff will outline the project’s proposed scope and objectives and gather public input to help shape the application.

In a statement, the city emphasized that the project is currently in the planning stage and has not been funded. If the grant is awarded, funding would not become available until fiscal year 2036.

Known professionally as JayCee, the Long Island vocalist has performed nationally throughout her career, appearing at venues including Lincoln Center, jazz and blues festivals, cruise ships, and concert halls. Her performances feature favorites from Etta James and Frank Sinatra to Adele and Billy Joel, showcasing a style that blends traditional and contemporary influences.

Held on Saturday, June 13, at 8 p.m., the show is $10 for Kings Point residents and $15 for guests, with tickets available online and at the venue’s box office before and on the night of the concert.

The new box office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, tickets can be purchased at the Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at the Palace from 7 to 8:15 p.m.

As a reminder, shorts are not permitted in the theater. All attendees must be 18 years or older for all shows. Kings Point Palace is open to the public.

SoFlo Chicken and Grill brings a new restaurant to Tamarac, offering a wide variety of dishes and sides.

The restaurant represents a dream for Amshel Kage, his wife, Shaleah Kage, and Amshel’s mother, Imogene Richards. They opened SoFlo about two months ago.

“I worked for Domino’s Pizza for years, starting as a delivery man and working my way up to a corporate position. After 24 years in the food service game, I realized I had learned what I needed to know and decided to open a restaurant,” said Amshel.

SoFlo offers fried fish, fried catfish, baked salmon, ten flavors of chicken wings, jerk chicken, hamburgers, chicken and fish sandwiches, fried corn, French fries, and many other items.

SoFlo’s first location is in Tamarac, but Amshel wants to grow the restaurant and open new locations in other Broward cities.

At the June 4 meeting of the Tamarac North Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, SoFlo was announced as a new business. Amshel hopes to have an official ribbon-cutting within the next few months.

SoFlo is located at 5201 North State Road 7. Business hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.

A roommate is accused of spitting on and trying to choke a senior homeowner during a fight over a missing TV remote.

According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report, Nicholas Sergei Cheer, 27, of Tamarac, was arrested on May 31 and charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older.

The report shows deputies responded to a 911 call at a Tamarac residence located near the 7600 block of Northwest 73rd Terrance after receiving reports of an assault. 

When deputies arrived, the homeowner told them Cheer had grabbed her by the neck and spit on her during the confrontation. The dispute allegedly began over a missing television remote control.

The homeowner told deputies she confronted Cheer after he was accused of hiding the living room remote. During the argument, Cheer allegedly repeatedly called her a “c*nt,” and became menacing.

The woman said she attempted to retreat to her bedroom and attempted to close the door, but deputies say Cheer rushed in, prevented her from shutting it, and grabbed her throat. 

The victim told deputies she was able to stop him from choking her and that as she sat on a sofa in the living room, Cheer allegedly spat on her.

By the time deputies arrived, Cheer had left the residence.

Cheer was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $3,500 bond.

Joe Britner is the new CEO of HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital in Tamarac.

His priority is to make it the hospital of choice in the community and to be a leader in Broward for safe and effective care.

At Woodmont, the new cardiac catheterization lab means people in Tamarac can now receive minimally invasive heart treatments. Alongside this, the hospital has added electrophysiology services, which expand access to specialized heart care in the community, according to Britner.

“When I first came to Woodmont, I listened to my team. My goal is to create a culture of excellence, and I want people in the community to choose our hospital,” said Britner.

On June 4, Woodmont welcomed the Tamarac North Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce for a breakfast meeting. Britner addressed local business and community leaders during the event.

He shared, “When I first started here, I asked my team, ‘Would this hospital be your first choice for a family member?’ If the answer is no, then we have a lot of work to do. My focus is on patient care,” he said.

During the past year, Woodmont had about 11,800 admissions, 41,000 emergency room visits, and 4,000 surgeries. The hospital employs about 800 people and is one of the largest businesses in Tamarac, according to Britner.

Britner’s background is in supply chain management. He began working at Woodmont in April, after previously serving as the chief operating officer (COO) at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. From 2021 to 2023, he was COO at Woodmont.

Women veterans are invited to a special luncheon in Tamarac celebrating their service to the nation, and attendees will also receive free mobile phones through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Coral Springs and the Coral Springs Veterans Coalition.

The Women Veterans Luncheon, sponsored by Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez in honor of Women Veterans Day, will take place on Friday, June 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The View at Colony West, located at 6850 NW 88th Ave. in Tamarac.

As part of the event, the Rotary Club of Coral Springs and the Coral Springs Veterans Coalition will provide free mobile phones to veterans who attend the luncheon. The initiative is designed to help veterans stay connected to family, health care providers, community resources and support services.

The luncheon will recognize and honor the contributions and sacrifices of women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Attendees will have an opportunity to connect with fellow veterans while enjoying a complimentary meal and special recognition.

A Lauderhill man is facing felony charges after police say he threw liquor and beer bottles at passing vehicles, shattering a driver’s windshield and endangering motorists on West Broward Boulevard.

According to a Lauderhill Police arrest affidavit, officers responded around 2:57 p.m. on May 28 near West Broward Boulevard and Northwest 31st Avenue after multiple 911 calls reported that a man was throwing objects at moving vehicles.

Upon arrival, officers identified the suspect as Quintin Marteen Williams, 43, and a victim, a woman, who was driving on West Broward Boulevard when she saw Williams throw a hard object toward her vehicle. The object struck and shattered the driver’s-side front windshield. Authorities said the impact created the potential for death or great bodily harm.

After being advised of his rights, Williams allegedly admitted that he became upset and threw two bottles—a Smirnoff bottle and a Corona bottle—toward vehicles traveling on the roadway.

Police said a witness at the scene corroborated the victim’s account and positively identified Williams during a show-up conducted by responding officers.

The victim provided a sworn recorded statement and indicated she wanted to pursue charges, according to the report. Williams was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Court records show Williams was being held pending his first appearance hearing.

With animal shelters across the country facing overcrowding, local organizations are joining forces to help more pets find permanent homes.

According to research from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, nearly 73% of government-run shelters report an increase in the number of dogs entering their facilities.

To help address the growing need, Broward County Animal Care and Broward County Parks and Recreation are partnering with animal welfare organizations across South Florida for the Petco Love Florida MEGA Adoption Event on Saturday, June 20, at T.Y. Park in Hollywood.

The free event is part of a statewide initiative aimed at finding homes for 2,000 dogs and cats. Participating organizations will waive adoption fees and offer adoptable pets on-site. Pet registration fees and the park’s weekend gate admission fee will still apply.

“Animal shelters, including Broward County Animal Care, are under tremendous pressure as more pets enter our care than leave through adoption,” said Doug Brightwell, director of Broward County Animal Care. “This event is an opportunity for our community to be part of the solution. Every adoption creates space for another pet in need and helps us move closer to ending shelter overcrowding.”

The adoption event brings together Broward County Animal Care, Broward County Parks and Recreation, Miami-Dade County Animal Services, the Humane Society of Broward County, the Humane Society of Greater Miami and Petco Love.

“Parks and dogs have a lot in common. They reduce stress and anxiety, and encourage an active, healthy lifestyle that includes social interaction among dog lovers and owners, building a sense of community,” said Dan West, director of Broward County Parks and Recreation. “We hope you and your new pet will visit T.Y. Park or one of our other regional parks, which allow dogs on six-foot leashes, or visit our leash-free dog parks at Markham Park and Quiet Waters Park.”

The Bright Futures Back-to-School Backpack Drive will take place on Saturday, June 27, beginning at 9 a.m. at Tephford Park, located at 10003 Southgate Blvd.

According to Patterson, the initiative aims to support local youth while encouraging community engagement and neighborly kindness throughout the district.

Backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Families must provide proof of District 3 residency to receive a backpack. The giveaway is limited to elementary and middle school students.

Residents are encouraged to arrive early, as supplies are expected to be limited.

A woman is accused of leaving her 6-year-old twins, including a nonverbal autistic child, alone for hours at a Tamarac barber shop before allegedly claiming she didn’t remember having kids.

According to a BSO incident report, Shandacia Amari Richmond, 29, of North Lauderdale, faces two felony counts of child neglect without great bodily harm following the May 28 incident at L & B Barber Shop, located at 3886 West Commercial Boulevard.

According to investigators, employees at the barber shop told deputies Richmond arrived at the business with her children around 6:00 p.m. and told a barber she would be leaving for about 15 minutes. Witnesses said Richmond came back briefly, then left again and never returned.

Barber shop employees told deputies they later noticed the children running around the business without adult supervision. They said no one at the shop had agreed to watch the children and that repeated attempts to contact Richmond by phone went unanswered. 

After the shop closed, employees contacted law enforcement. Investigators said the children had been left unsupervised for roughly five hours.

Deputies noted one of the children is nonverbal and believed to be autistic. Witnesses told investigators the child had communication challenges and would have difficulty identifying parents or alerting others to danger.

According to the arrest report, deputies attempted to contact Richmond approximately 20 times before eventually reaching a man who reportedly told them he found Richmond unresponsive at a gas station and woke her up before driving her home. 

During a phone conversation with law enforcement, the man allegedly asked Richmond whether she had left her children at the barber shop, and Richmond responded, “I don’t remember having kids.”

King then drove Richmond back to the barber shop, where deputies took her into custody.

After being transported to the Tamarac district station, Richmond invoked her right to remain silent and declined to discuss the incident with detectives, according to the report. Deputies also noted she had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.

Richmond was arrested and transported to the Broward County Jail.

A 911 call from WoodSpring Suites in Tamarac led to a foot chase after hotel staff found a bloodied woman who told deputies her boyfriend strangled her during a violent domestic dispute.

According to a BSO arrest report, Fakir Hussain Abdullah, 24, was arrested on May 27 and charged with domestic battery by strangulation, battery, and resisting arrest. 

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies responded to a 911 call from the WoodSpring Suites Hotel. Upon arrival, deputies said the victim told them an argument escalated after she became upset that Abdullah allegedly chose not to go to work and instead wanted to spend the day drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana in the hotel room she was paying for.

According to the report, the victim packed Abdullah’s belongings and told him to leave. Deputies say Abdullah then punched her in the mouth while they were inside the room.

A hotel employee who responded after hearing a loud argument in the hallway told deputies the confrontation turned physical. The employee reportedly observed blood coming from the woman’s mouth and witnessed the pair fall to the floor during the struggle. 

Investigators say the employee reported seeing Abdullah place both hands around the woman’s neck, choking her so hard that she later said she could not breathe for an extended period of time.

Deputies later located Abdullah near Hiatus Road. According to the affidavit, when a deputy attempted to place him in handcuffs, Abdullah ran away. Authorities said he ignored commands to stop and fled on foot before a search of the area led deputies to catch and detain him after a brief pursuit.

Investigators noted that Abdullah had no prior battery convictions but was already on probation for resisting an officer with violence at the time of the arrest.

Abdullah was arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail.

Carfi has entertained audiences nationwide with his sharp, clean comedy, appearing on The Ricki Lake Show, Entertainment Tonight, and Comedy Central. A veteran performer, he has shared the stage with entertainers including Kenny Rogers and Michael Bolton. He also hosted a morning radio show on WZZO and wrote jokes for comedy icons Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield.

Joining him is singer and entertainer Leesah Stiles, known for her tribute performances celebrating Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, and Linda Ronstadt, among others. Stiles has shared the stage with Grammy Award-winning singer Maria Muldaur and actor Ed Herrmann. In addition to her live performances, she has recorded radio jingles and appeared in a variety of theatrical and musical productions.

Held on Saturday, June 6, at 8 p.m., the show is $10 for Kings Point residents and $15 for guests, with tickets available online and at the venue’s box office before and on the night of the concert.

The new box office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, and 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, tickets can be purchased at the Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at the Palace from 7 to 8:15 p.m.

As a reminder, shorts are not permitted in the theater. All attendees must be 18 years or older for all shows. Kings Point Palace is open to the public.

Every emergency response begins with a voice on the other end of the line. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Regional Communications Division is the critical first point of contact when seconds matter most, serving as the bridge between crisis and resolution. Behind every call is a highly trained professional who must remain calm under pressure, make rapid decisions and ensure responders are deployed without delay.

As one of the largest consolidated dispatch systems in the nation, this division operates from three Public Safety Answering Points. Our team handles both 911 emergencies and non-emergency calls, dispatches law enforcement and fire rescue units and manages teletype communications across Broward County’s unincorporated areas, 28 municipalities, 15 fire rescue agencies and critical infrastructure, including the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades, Broward County Courthouse and our detention facilities.

Regional Communications Operators are the first point of contact when someone dials 911, guiding law enforcement and fire rescue units to the scene. Using advanced dispatch software, they interpret call data, prioritize incidents and assign appropriate resources. They maintain constant radio communication with deputies and fire rescue units, provide updated information as situations evolve while monitoring responder safety. They also conduct rapid database checks, verify warrants, confirm restraining orders, review driver’s license statuses and access criminal justice information systems at the state and national levels. This is a 24/7 operation with no margin for error.

Each year, our Regional Communications Operators process more than 1.7 million calls for service. That level of service is made possible by approximately 450 dedicated professionals working together seamlessly to ensure every call is answered and every situation is handled with urgency and care.

As your sheriff, I have prioritized the implementation and use of cutting-edge technology and expanded the availability of resources necessary to meet the evolving demands of public safety. We have championed the integration of Text-to-911, providing a vital lifeline for individuals who are speech-impaired or in dangerous situations where a voice call is not an option. Through the implementation of Automatic Resource Locator technology, our radios are now equipped with integrated Global Positioning System capabilities that allow Regional Communications Operators to immediately identify their exact location and deploy assistance faster and more effectively.

While our Regional Communications Operators are trained in high-stakes emergencies, they also manage essential non-emergency calls. We encourage residents to use the BSO non-emergency line at 954-764-HELP (4357) for non-urgent matters such as reporting identity theft, roaming animals or suspicious activity. This helps ensure 911 remains open for immediate emergencies.

June means budget workshop season at Broward County Government. We will hear presentations from departments such as Wastewater Services, Port Everglades, Aviation, and Transportation Surtax, among many others. Also, we will be briefed by constitutional officers such as the Broward Sheriff and the Property Appraiser. All workshops are streamed live via Broward.org and are available to the public. It is my priority to lower costs for residents by working with our departments, the county commission, and constitutional officers to increase efficiency to lower taxes. I will continue to fight for the residents of District 3 and Broward County every day to ensure our community continues to succeed.

Broward County will observe Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, this year. All Broward County offices will be closed as we honor this holiday. This is an opportunity to celebrate freedom for all and gives residents the chance to learn about the vital history of our nation. (I only expected to give a speech to encourage the inductees!)  Congratulations to the NHS Inductees, and thank you again for allowing me to be a part of your special journey!

To everyone who attended the 2026 Business District meeting and the amazing Tamarac Team that participated – thank you!  It was great having current and future business owners networking and learning where to find resources, how to work efficiently and effectively with the City, and the City learned more about business community needs and perspectives.  Communication is the key to success and I’m glad the lines are open!

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 17-year-old girl last seen in Tamarac.

According to investigators, Brisa Velasco was last seen at approximately 4:30 p.m. on May 28 in the 8700 block of Northwest 57th Street.

Velasco is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing all black clothing.

Anyone with information regarding Velasco’s whereabouts is urged to contact BSO Detective Chris Blankenship at 954-321-4268 or the BSO non-emergency number at 954-764-HELP (4357).

Drivers in Tamarac will need to watch their speed in front of schools in the early morning and mid-afternoon hours.

During the May 27 meeting, the commission passed on first reading an ordinance amending the city code relating to motor vehicles and traffic by establishing the use of speed detection systems to enforce school zone limits.

Under Florida statutes, municipalities must adopt an ordinance authorizing the placement of school zone speed detection systems before implementing the detection system program.

The commission must consider traffic data and other evidence supporting the placement and operation of each proposed school zone speed detection system and show that the identified school zones have safety problems, according to city information.

To assess speeding and safety in Tamarac school zones, the city conducted a two-day speed study with RedSpeed Florida on March 23 and 24 at five sites: Tamarac Elementary (NW 80th Ave), Discovery Elementary (North Pine Island Road and West Commercial Blvd.), Renaissance Charter (NW 82nd St.), and Challenger Elementary/Millennium Collegiate Academy (West Commercial Blvd). These locations will receive detection equipment.

The study found significant speeding around these schools, including vehicles traveling more than ten miles per hour above the posted speed limit, according to city data.

A contract has been signed with a speed detection provider, and financial arrangements are still pending. Mayor Michelle J. Gomez said the speed detection system is not a money maker, but will improve school safety.

Captain David Franks, Chief for Tamarac’s Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), said he supports the detection system because it will reduce speeding around schools.

The following is a summary of notable calls and arrests handled by the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Tamarac between May 19 and May 25, 2026.

A bicycle valued at $225 was reported stolen on May 19.

Deputies responded to multiple domestic disturbance calls throughout the week that were determined to be verbal disputes with no physical violence reported.

A shoplifting incident was reported at Walgreens, 6401 W. Commercial Blvd., on May 19.

Another bicycle theft involving a $200 loss was reported May 19.

A Tamarac resident reported vandalism to a vehicle on May 19 in a criminal mischief investigation.

Deputies investigated several death cases during the week, including incidents at residences and healthcare facilities.

A stalking report was filed May 19 involving alleged harassment at a Tamarac residence.

A woman reported being battered by her boyfriend on May 19. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Broward Main Jail.

A man was arrested May 20 for violating a domestic violence injunction after approaching the victim near her residence.

Aibriana Bernabe placed eighth in the high jump, and Janael Legar finished 12th in the 100-meter hurdles.

Seton Ridge Children’s Center is now enrolling for the 2026-2027 school year, offering a play-based, faith-focused preschool program for children ages 18 months through VPK.

Operating as a ministry of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Seton Ridge Children’s Center, located at 1401 Coral Ridge Drive, has served the community for 36 years, welcoming children from 18 months through VPK in a family-oriented setting focused on curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Located in Coral Springs, the preschool offers programs for young twos, threes, and VPK students, with flexible scheduling options including three-, four-, or five-day programs. They are a part-time program with their main hours from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm.

“At Seton Ridge Children’s Center, we fundamentally believe that children are entitled to a childhood that is rich in wonder and discovery,” Maria D’Attile, Director of Seton Ridge, said, adding,  “These early childhood years are when children absorb the world through every experience around them. We want them to explore, investigate, create, and truly enjoy learning.”

Unlike highly structured academic environments for young children, Seton Ridge focuses on developmentally appropriate, child-centered learning, where play serves as the foundation for future success in reading, math, science, language, and social development.

“Our curriculum is hands-on and open-ended because in early childhood, experience is the teacher,” D’Attile said. “Children learn by pouring, building, singing, dancing, imagining, experimenting, and even getting messy. That process is where meaningful learning happens.”

The school follows Florida VPK standards using the Creative Curriculum, and all teachers are certified in early childhood education and trained in CPR. Each classroom includes both a lead teacher and an assistant teacher to support individualized attention and care.

Programs at Seton Ridge incorporate science, art, literacy, music, motor skills, imagination, and social development through interactive activities designed to build independence and confidence.

“We support the development of the whole child,” D’Attile said. “Children need opportunities to take safe risks, solve problems, learn responsibility, and discover the power of communication. Those experiences help create lifelong learners.”

Faith also plays an important role in the school’s culture. Children participate in daily prayers while older preschool classes visit the chapel for age-appropriate talks focused on kindness, compassion, and love.

“We believe children learn best by what they see lived out before them,” D’Attile said. “A loving way of life is what we strive for our children to experience every day.”

One of the school’s most distinctive features is its Imagination Room, where students engage in creative exploration that encourages storytelling, pretend play, and discovery.

Registration is now open for the 2026-2027 school year. The school follows the Broward County School Calendar and offers early drop-off beginning at 8:00 a.m. as well as Stay & Play extended care until 2:00 p.m.

Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac will mark the Jewish holiday of Shavuot this Friday with a free community celebration featuring a public reading of the Ten Commandments and an ice cream party for children.

Rabbi Kopel Silberberg and co-Director Goldy Silberberg are hosting two readings of the Ten Commandments on May 22 — at 11:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. — each followed by a dairy holiday buffet with cheesecake, cheese blintzes, and ice cream.

The evening session will also include a children’s Ice Cream Garden Party from 5 to 6 p.m., with crafts, games, giveaways, and make-your-own ice cream activities.

Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Jewish tradition holds that every man, woman, and child should hear the Ten Commandments read on the holiday, recalling the moment the entire Jewish nation stood together at Sinai.

“Every year, when we hear the Ten Commandments read again, it’s not just remembering history,” Rabbi Silberberg said. “It’s reconnecting to the values and purpose that have guided the Jewish people for thousands of years.”

Three South Florida men were sentenced to federal prison Tuesday for their roles in a scheme that defrauded Medicare and laundered more than $2.2 million in illegal health care fraud proceeds, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Marco Scamarone, 34, of Tamarac, was sentenced to 70 months in prison.
Jose Mendez, 34, of Coral Springs, was sentenced to 78 months in prison.
Renee Vazquez, 33, of Tamarac, was sentenced to 60 months in prison.

According to court documents and statements made in court, the men owned and operated two fraudulent durable medical equipment companies — Braces and Orthotics LLC in Virginia and Stone Oak Durable Medical Equipment LLC in South Florida.

Federal prosecutors said the companies submitted about $6.9 million in fraudulent Medicare claims between January 2022 and February 2023 for medically unnecessary orthotic braces that were ineligible for reimbursement.

Authorities said the conspiracy involved illegal kickbacks and bribes paid to an offshore marketing company in exchange for beneficiary referrals and fraudulent doctors’ orders.

Investigators said the men then laundered the proceeds through shell companies controlled by them and their associates, ultimately laundering more than $2.2 million for themselves and co-conspirators.

All three defendants pleaded guilty in December 2025 to conspiracy to commit money laundering.

At sentencing, Scamarone and Mendez were ordered to pay $2,217,840.35 in forfeiture and $3,016,324.20 in restitution. Vazquez was ordered to pay $1,723,773.18 in forfeiture and $2,249,392.09 in restitution.

The announcement was made by the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, the FBI Miami Field Office and the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Tamarac responded to various incidents from May 12 to May 18, 2026. Below is a detailed account of the incidents and arrests handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Incidents

Aggravated Assaults

A man was arrested after allegedly threatening another person with a firearm on May 12 in the 0704 zone. Deputies identified the suspect as Adler Telfort.

Another aggravated assault occurred on May 13 in the 0705 zone when a woman allegedly attempted to stab a man with a screwdriver during a domestic violence incident.

Retail Thefts

An unknown man stole approximately $97 worth of merchandise from Walgreens on May 12.

On May 13, a suspect reportedly ran out of a CVS store with six containers of Tide Pods valued at $125.

Robbery and Theft Cases

A woman reported her purse was snatched from her shoulder by an unknown man while she was walking on May 14. The estimated loss was $1,050.

Three computers valued at approximately $3,600 were stolen from the Kings Point Clubhouse in a delayed theft report.

A resident reported a firearm stolen from a vehicle parked in Tamarac on May 13. The gun had reportedly been left inside the glove box.

Two bicycle thefts were reported during the week, including one valued at $600.

In another unusual theft case, a man told deputies he believed his roommate stole his cat, “Simba,” while he was away from the residence.

Batteries and Domestic Incidents

Several battery and domestic violence incidents were reported throughout the week, including a May 15 case in which a woman told deputies her husband pushed her backward onto a bed.

At an IHOP on May 15, an employee reported that a DoorDash driver slapped her hand during an order dispute.

Deputies also responded to numerous verbal domestic disturbances where no arrests were made and no injuries were observed.

Baker Acts and Mental Health Calls

Multiple Baker Act cases were reported during the week involving individuals experiencing mental health crises or suicidal thoughts. Several subjects were transported to behavioral health facilities for evaluation.

Death Investigations

Deputies investigated several deaths during the week, including incidents at residential facilities and private homes. One investigation involved a 75-year-old woman whose death was determined to be from natural causes.

Arrests

Nigel Paul Bonner, 28, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery.

Adler Telfort, 29, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Christian Caleb McCullough, 26, was arrested on a fraud charge after allegedly leaving a restaurant without paying.

Anderson Ductan, 23, was arrested on a firearm-related warrant charge.

Justice Tatiana Strong, 25, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon related to domestic violence.

Ronald Edward Pohl, 79, was arrested on a felony battery charge involving a person 65 years or older.

Michael George Vassell, 66, was arrested for violating a domestic violence injunction.

Broward County Animal Care has activated code HOME after exceeding dog shelter capacity. The shelter currently has 152 dogs in its care, but only 148 available kennels, prompting the emergency community response campaign during one of the busiest times of the year.

Adoption fees have been waived, although pet registration requirements still apply.

Residents can view adoptable pets through Broward County Animal Care’s online adoption portal.

“Every kennel matters, and every member of our community can be part of the solution,” said Doug Brightwell, director of Broward County Animal Care. “Because we are an open admission shelter and the County’s official animal welfare agency, our doors remain open to animals that need protection and care. Right now, we need Broward County’s help through adoption, fostering, and reunification efforts.”

As Broward County’s official animal welfare agency, Animal Care is required to accept animals in need and investigate cruelty, neglect, dangerous dog cases, and public safety concerns throughout the county.

Officials are urging the public to help ease overcrowding by adopting, fostering, or helping reunite lost pets with their owners.

Animal Care said that adopting a pet creates space for another animal needing shelter, while temporary foster homes can reduce kennel stress and improve dogs’ well-being outside the shelter.

Officials also noted that many animals entering the shelter are lost pets with families searching for them. Residents are encouraged to review found-pet listings and visit the shelter to help reconnect pets with their owners.

Daniel’s “BBQ for Our Teachers” will take place on Saturday, May 23, at Tamarac Park. The free event is designed to honor educators for their dedication and service to the community.

According to the event listing, attendees can enjoy a barbecue, live music, games, and entertainment as part of the celebration, which recognizes the hard work teachers provide throughout the school year and gives them an opportunity to relax and connect with the community.

Tamarac will continue to participate in the interlocal agreement with Broward County for solid waste disposal.

During the May 13 meeting, the commission passed a resolution to approve the first amendment to the Interlocal Agreement (ILA) with Broward County for the Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority.

This agreement was established to provide the county and participating municipalities with a coordinated regional approach to solid waste disposal, recycling processing, waste reduction, and long-term system planning, according to city information.

The resolution states that the City first entered into an ILA on August 23, 2023, which created the Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Authority of Broward County, and that this agreement is the first amendment to that.

Through regional cooperation, the authority will promote cost efficiency and reliable solid waste services for county residents. The agreement requires the adoption of a master plan and any necessary amendments to the facilities to ensure the continued operation of the authority, according to city information.

The city’s annual solid waste program consists of three primary service components: Collection, Disposal, and Recycling. Based on 2025 operational data, the city managed approximately 35,769.45 total tons of material through its residential programs at a cost of $88,400, down from $88,582 for FY2024.

According to the city, Tamarac’s participation in the authority will mean lower, more predictable waste-disposal costs, joint planning with neighboring cities, and access to more efficient recycling and disposal services. The agreement also provides for ongoing improvements in waste management through regional collaboration, resulting in enhanced service reliability and the ability to shape policies guiding future waste reduction and system upgrades.

A couple has officially taken over ownership of Allbrite Pool Supplies and says they are proud to continue the longtime business’s legacy of serving the community.

Edward and Giselle Paula of Paula Pools LLC recently acquired the family-owned pool supply and service company located at 8036 Wiles Road, taking over a business that has been owned and operated by the Eagan family for two generations.

For the Paulas, the acquisition is both professional and deeply personal.

Giselle grew up in Coral Springs and lived across the street from Allbrite from the age of five. After graduating from Coral Springs High School, she and Edward returned to Coral Springs more than nine years ago to raise their family and further establish roots in the community they love.

The couple said they immediately recognized the strong reputation and trust the Eagan family built over nearly four decades in business.

“We immediately saw the impact the Eagan family had on the community through Allbrite,” the Paulas said. “It’s an honor to continue that legacy while helping the business grow for future generations.”

Both Edward and Giselle come from family business backgrounds and bring experience in distribution, warehousing, logistics, operations, and customer service — skills they believe position them well to continue the level of care and reliability Allbrite customers have come to expect.

For customers, the transition is expected to feel seamless.

An off-duty FBI agent assisted Broward deputies in chasing down a Tamarac man accused of pointing what appeared to be a firearm at passing drivers along University Drive.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest reports, Adler Telfort, 28, was taken into custody on May 13 and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer.

Deputies were first dispatched around 10:20 p.m. on May 12 to the intersection of North University Drive and Northwest 61st Street after reports of a man on a bicycle “yelling to himself and pointing a firearm at drivers passing by,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

Investigators said deputies had already been responding to multiple calls involving Telfort earlier that night near his Tamarac residence on Northwest 63rd Court. Deputies described him as appearing to be carrying what callers described as either a Glock firearm or a black BB gun.

One deputy reported seeing Telfort riding away on a BMX-style bicycle moments before the aggravated assault calls came in.

Two victims later told deputies they were driving south on University Drive when they saw a man matching Telfort’s description screaming to himself before allegedly pointing a firearm at their vehicle and another nearby car. The victims told investigators they feared they were about to be shot at.

The following day, deputies attempting to locate Telfort spotted a man matching the description riding a bicycle near West McNab Road and North University Drive. Deputies attempted to stop him, but Telfort allegedly fled through traffic, crossed medians, and rode through shopping plazas as deputies pursued him.

Deputies said an off-duty FBI agent assisted during part of the chase. Authorities ultimately took Telfort into custody near HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital after a second foot pursuit.

Court records show Telfort was booked into the Broward Main Jail following the arrest.

This is not the first time Telfort has faced allegations involving weapons and dangerous behavior on South Florida roadways. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Telfort was previously arrested in 2024 following a high-speed chase on Interstate 75 along Florida’s west coast.

Troopers said the incident began after authorities received a report that Telfort allegedly displayed a gun to another motorist in Lee County. FHP located Telfort driving and attempted a traffic stop, but investigators said he fled at speeds reaching 120 mph while passing vehicles on the shoulder of the highway.

The pursuit ultimately ended after troopers performed a PIT maneuver, taking Telfort into custody. Authorities said they later discovered several toy guns inside the vehicle.

Residents in the vicinity of Northwest 77th Street and Greenwood Boulevard can expect improvements as part of the approved crosswalk project.

During the May 13 meeting, the commission passed a resolution to approve a contract with Alexander and Johnson Project Management and Development for the construction of the NW 77th Street crosswalk project for $221,427.

The project will provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and aims to reduce accidents at this busy intersection. The upgraded crosswalk signal system is expected to make it easier for people to access nearby amenities and support smoother traffic movement in the area.

Other work will include concrete and curb removal, sidewalk improvements, brick paver installation, new pavement markings, and landscaping, according to city information.

The NW 77th Street and Greenwood Boulevard intersection is the access point to the Tamarac Sports Complex.

During the May 13 meeting, Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton presented a community hero award to mothers who care for autistic children.

Then Bolton announced he would create the Circle of Love Initiative, a program to support families of children with autism. He said meetings will be held so mothers can discuss what Tamarac can do to help them.

“We will focus on autism. I want to hear directly from mothers who are caring for autistic children about what we can do to help them. I want to provide them with resources and support,” said Bolton.

He said the date and location for the first Circle of Love meeting will be finalized and announced in early June.

Residents can learn about stroke prevention, receive free health screenings and enjoy family-friendly entertainment during the 12th Annual Stroke Awareness and Prevention Health Fair and Family Fun Day in Tamarac.

Hosted by Commissioner Morey Wright and the Smiley’s Voice Foundation, the free event is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tamarac Recreation Center, 7501 N. University Drive.

The event will offer a variety of free health care screenings, including cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, balance and strength screenings, as well as medication management education.

Medical professionals and health experts will also provide educational sessions focused on stroke prevention, treatment and overall wellness. Featured speakers include Dr. Norman Ajiboye, neurointerventional surgeon and medical director of stroke programs at Memorial Hospital Miramar and Memorial Hospital Pembroke, along with representatives from Broward Health North Medical Center, Catholic Hospice and Palliative Care Services, and other health organizations.

Attendees can also take part in CPR demonstrations, a nutrition workshop presented by the Sickle Cell Foundation, and mental health discussions.

In addition to health resources, the family event will feature live music by Crowd Pleasures Entertainment, free food, massages and giveaways. Children’s activities and bounce houses will also be available throughout the day.

Fitness demonstrations and dance sessions are planned, including Zumba, Reggaerobics, Socarobics and hip hop dance classes.

Broward County Animal Care is teaming up with Best Friends Animal Society and Walmart for a free pet adoption event in celebration of National Pet Month.

The “Give Love. Save Lives.” event is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, at the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Dania Beach. Broward County Animal Care will bring adoptable dogs to the event and waive adoption fees to help more animals find permanent homes. Broward County pet registration fees will still apply.

According to Broward County Animal Care Director Doug Brightwell, the event aims to increase lifesaving outcomes for animals while encouraging responsible pet ownership throughout the community.

“Every adoption creates space for another animal in need and gives a deserving pet a second chance,” Brightwell said in a statement. “When the community shows up to adopt, foster, volunteer, or advocate for responsible pet ownership, it helps us move more animals into safe, loving homes and strengthens our collective responsibility to animal welfare.”

Animal Care staff and volunteers will be on-site to help prospective adopters, answer questions, and provide information about pet ownership resources and services available throughout Broward County.

The event is part of the national “Give Love. Save Lives.” initiative, which focuses on increasing pet adoptions and reducing shelter overcrowding through community partnerships and public involvement.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walmart Neighborhood Market, 401 E. Sheridan St. in Dania Beach.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Tamarac responded to various incidents from May 5 to May 11, 2026. Below is a detailed account of the incidents and arrests handled by local law enforcement during this period.

Incidents

Aggravated Battery

A man was arrested after deputies investigated a physical altercation involving a male and female in Tamarac on May 5. Deputies determined the man battered the woman and transported him to the Broward Main Jail.

Retail Theft

A suspect was arrested after allegedly shoplifting approximately $91 worth of merchandise from Publix at 4121 W. Commercial Blvd. on May 5.

Deputies said a suspect stole approximately $445 worth of uncooked steak from Publix at 8245 N. Pine Island Rd. on May 5. Surveillance video and receipts were collected as evidence.

A suspect allegedly stole two bottles of shampoo valued at about $18 from CVS at 3914 W. Commercial Blvd. on May 8 before fleeing on foot.

Two pairs of shoes valued at approximately $140 were reported stolen from TJ Maxx at 4197 W. Commercial Blvd. on May 8.

Fraud and Financial Crimes

A Tamarac woman reported that three businesses fraudulently withdrew approximately $605 from her bank account between November 2025 and April 2026.

A Tamarac resident reported that stolen checks totaling $20,321 were fraudulently deposited into a Chase bank account after being taken from her mailbox.

A woman reported that an unknown person used her identity to open two fraudulent credit card accounts in March.

Threats and Assaults

A man reported receiving threats from another individual on May 5.

A woman reported an employee intentionally struck her with a door on May 8. The employee reportedly received disciplinary action.

Deputies responded to a battery investigation May 9 after witnesses reported a woman was punched by a man. The victim was heavily intoxicated and later Baker Acted after making suicidal statements, according to deputies.

Drug Arrest

Deputies responding to a fight call on May 6 arrested a suspect after a foot pursuit. Deputies said the suspect possessed 23.2 grams of marijuana and was charged with resisting without violence and drug offenses.

Death Investigations

Deputies responded to a medical emergency involving a 64-year-old woman who was pronounced dead on May 5. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded.

A woman was found deceased May 6 in what deputies said appeared to be a natural death related to health conditions.

Deputies also investigated the death of a Tamarac man May 6 after he was found deceased in his bedroom during a routine check. Authorities said the death appeared natural.

On May 7, Tamarac Fire Rescue pronounced a man dead after deputies responded to a cardiac arrest call. Deputies reported no signs of foul play.

Baker Acts

A woman was Baker Acted after texting her mother suicidal statements on May 5.

A woman was Baker Acted and transported to Florida Behavioral Center on May 9.

A man who allegedly attempted suicide by overdosing on pills was Baker Acted May 10 after Narcan was administered. Deputies also secured a firearm belonging to the subject.

Animal Abuse Investigation

Deputies responded to an animal abuse call involving three dogs on May 8. Animal control opened an investigation.

Arrests

Bonnie Machata, 61, was arrested on a warrant May 5.

Craig Frazier, 23, was arrested May 5 on a charge of aggravated battery involving a pregnant victim.

Jacquelen Beard, 35, was arrested May 5 on a petit theft charge.

A 38-year-old man was arrested May 5 on a domestic violence assault charge.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested May 5 on a domestic violence battery charge.

Meaghan Hernandez, 26, was arrested May 6 on a drug possession charge.

Micheal Adwar, 21, was arrested May 8 on a theft charge.

Shawniel Smith, 36, was arrested May 8 on charges involving criminal use of personal identification.

Ali Exalien, 32, was arrested May 8 on a domestic violence battery charge.

Wael Ghali, 53, was arrested May 8 on a battery charge.

A 23-year-old woman was arrested May 10 on a dating violence battery charge.

A 25-year-old man was arrested May 11 on a domestic violence battery charge.

A T-Mobile employee was arrested after authorities said he allegedly sent himself a sexually explicit video from a customer’s phone while helping transfer data to a new device.

According to court records, Murray Jahmeke Nivens, 22, of North Lauderdale, was taken into custody on May 10 by Lauderhill Police at 1200 North State Road 7 on a Broward County warrant. 

According to a probable cause affidavit, the alleged incident occurred on March 12 at the T-Mobile located at 295 Southwest 26th Avenue in Pompano Beach. Investigators said the victim went to the store to buy a new cell phone and asked for help transferring data from her old phone to the new one. Authorities said Nivens requested the victim’s passcode and told her the transfer would take about an hour.

While he had the phone, deputies alleged Nivens accessed the victim’s photo gallery without permission and sent an intimate video from her phone to his personal cell phone by text message.

Investigation records show the victim returned to the store later that afternoon to pick up her phone and noticed a message she did not recognize. Investigators said she then recognized the profile photo connected to the number as belonging to the employee who had helped her earlier.

According to the affidavit, the victim called the number and confronted Nivens. Authorities said Nivens admitted sending the video to himself, apologized, and told the victim he had deleted it from his device.

Nivens was arrested and charged with fraudulently accessing a computer without the owner’s knowledge. He was transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released after posting a $2,500 bond.

A 23-year-old Tamarac man is now facing a murder charge after the victim in a May 3 shooting died from his injuries, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO deputies responded shortly after 6 p.m. on May 3 to reports of a shooting in the 7600 block of Northwest 74th Terrace in Tamarac. When deputies arrived, they found Vernon Roe, 66, suffering from a gunshot wound, and the suspect, Xavier Mojica, 23, still at the scene.

Roe, who lived at the residence, was transported to Broward Health North for treatment. Detectives with BSO’s Violent Crimes Unit later determined that Roe and Mojica became involved in a verbal dispute over rent payment issues when Mojica allegedly fired a weapon, striking Roe.

According to investigators, Roe died from his injuries on May 8 while hospitalized.

Mojica, of Tamarac, was previously arrested on an attempted murder charge. Following Roe’s death, detectives upgraded the charge to second-degree murder, according to BSO.

The Tamarac city commission on Wednesday will discuss how to allocate $315,195.02 in funds the city received as its net share of a national class action settlement over contamination of public water systems with PFAS, a group of synthetic “forever chemicals.”

The agenda item, requested by Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton, is titled “Discussion and Consensus on Allocation of a Portion of the $315,195.02 Settlement Proceeds Related to the PFAS Water Quality Class Action Lawsuit to Commission Members who Elect to Opt-In for the Benefit of Tamarac Residents.” The item calls for discussion and consensus rather than a formal vote.

The $315,195.02 represents Tamarac’s net proceeds from a settlement with BASF Corporation in Tamarac, Florida vs. Tyco, et al., a class action suit, city records show. Numerous municipalities, including Tamarac, have alleged that they have suffered harm resulting from the presence of PFAS in drinking water and/or the need to monitor for the presence of PFAS in drinking water, and that Tyco is liable to them for damages and compensation. 

BASF’s gross contribution to Tamarac was $338,919.38, city records show. Ferraro Law, which represented the city in the litigation, deducted seven percent in attorneys’ fees — amounting to $23,724.36 — under a retainer agreement, leaving the city with $315,195.02 from that settlement.

On April 22, City Attorney Hans Ottinot wrote to commissioners to notify them that the check had arrived. 

“Please note that the City recently received a settlement check in the amount of $315,195.02 relating to the PFAS or water quality class action lawsuit,” Ottinot wrote in an email.

PFAS — polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly called “forever chemicals” — are a family of man-made chemicals that last indefinitely in the environment and the human body. They have been linked to health risks including thyroid disorders, certain cancers, and immune system effects. 

The chemicals have entered the water supplies of numerous U.S. municipalities through the widespread use of aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF, a firefighting chemical manufactured and sold by several major companies. 

BASF Corporation’s liability in the case stems from its 2009 acquisition of Ciba, a chemical company that had manufactured AFFF containing PFAS. BASF agreed to a $316.5 million national settlement with public water systems, which received final court approval in November 2024. 

The BASF settlement was one of two in the same litigation. Tamarac separately received $749,737.37 — minus legal fees — from a $750 million settlement with Tyco Fire Products. Combined, the city netted $1,064,932.39 from the two settlements. Wednesday’s agenda item apparently concerns only the BASF proceeds.

The agenda item drew immediate criticism from at least one resident. 

“This is insane! It’s a settlement for the city, not commissioners,” Kate Johnson, a Tamarac resident and good government advocate, wrote on Facebook. “All they want is money money money to buy votes. This has to stop.”

The city declined to respond with additional information or comment for this article.
