St.Francis of Assisi Church, Karumandurai is located in Salem main road near Chinnakalrayan Hills. Karumandurai is crowded with beautiful forest and Hills. History takes us to 1980, Bishop Micheal Bosco Duraiswamy has taken steps to drain the Illiterate, Ignorance and to enhance the life of people in and around Kalrayan Hills. He started a "Assisi institute of development" in 15/09/1980 to cater the needs of people by extending the support he started Assisi Medicals in the same year.

On 04/03/2000, St.Francis of Assisi Church was constructed and given to Karunmandurai Christians by Fr. Victor Sunderraj and acted as a branch of St Lourde Church. Later in 08.06.2008 St.Francis of Assisi Church bifurcated from St Lourde Church and Fr. Alex Prabhu was appointed as the first Parish Priest. During Fr.Alex Prabhu period , St Lourde Kebi was constructed and opened by Rev Fr. Singarayan.

St. Micheal Church Alagapuram, Salem was created by Bishop Micheal Bosco Thuraiswamy on 27.05.1997. First Parish Priest was Fr.Pilavendran. St Mary's Church - Mulagumoodu

Church of Our Lady of Nativity is also called as St Mary's Church situated near Mulagumoodu in Trivandrum - Kanyakumari National Highway. St Mary's Church stands for its tradition and cultural values. The main people behind Mulagumoodu is Fr. Victor and his brother Fr. Eugene. They have made this place as what it is says today.

History of St Mary's Church

Fr. Victor OCD was sent to support and preach Christianity in Thiruvithancode , the head quarters of Tranvancore Kingdom. Placing Infant Jesus as the head and Mother Mary as Queen and Heaven , he proclaimed the gospel to the people.

In 1862 he started an orphanage for the people who became orphans through a deadly disease Cholera. The bacterial disease that transmits through contaminated water and foods had affected1000 of people. Fr. Victor had opened the doors of his orphanage to accommodate the people without any hesitation. Days passed, the people coming to get shelter in orphanage increases, so Fr. Victor had sought Augustinian mission, Belgium and brought Sis. Marie Louise and Sis.Maria Ursula and founded Immaculate Cordis Maria (ICM ) Convent.

Jeusus in Altar

Fr.Victor had made boundless improvements in Mulagumoodu and broke the untouchability act. The untouchables were forbidden from wearing sandals, use umbrella, wear dress and jewels of their choice. They were not allowed to live in houses with tiled roofs. They were not expected to ride their own vehicles. In that scenario he treated everyone equal, that was one of the remarkable stand he made and literally erased such untouchability concepts from the minds of the people. After all this tiredness work, Fr.Victor was taken by god on 27-07-1987 and buried in St Mary's Church. Some of the amenities laid out by Fr. Victor.,

Old Church - Mulagumoodu

New Church

As the devotees increases, the old church has not enough space to accommodate. So a new church was started in 1910 and has completed in 1912, the church stood at a height of 85 feet. Roman's Arch shaped architecture was used in the church. After the Dimond Jubilee celebration again the church was reconstructed and now standing at a height of 100 feets.

Church Bell

The Bell using in St Mary's church was bought from France by Fr. Victor in 1891. The sound of this church bell is very peculiar among the other churches. Also the statue of Virgin Mary placed in Chair car was brought from Belgium by Fr. Victor.

Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus - Kadayal

Sacred Heart Church is situated in Kadayalmoodu, a beautiful village which is bundled with high mountains, low valleys, highlands, and plains. The people of Kadayal have a long standing tradition, rich heritage and conservative practices that still keep many of the vanishing Christian traditions alive.

History

During 18th century, missionaries from European territory had travelled miles to teach and guide Kadayal people that gave themselves confidence, Consolation and Protection. European missionaries made their way through Palliyadi Catholic Church. People have embraced Christianity, largely because of their humanitarian work.

Mr.Elias K (Kutty Bhuttan) had played a major role in the early stage. He had given place in front of his house to conduct the Holy mass. As Christians grow, devotees were in need of church, at last with the effort of Rev Fr Stanislaus OCD and the generous support from people, Sacred church was completed in 1925. The church bell was brought from Belgium.

Old Sacred Heart Church Kadayal

In the history of Kadayal Church, Rev Sister Marie Emin rendered a great service to the people. Staying in Ursulla's convent, she came by walk and spread God's words to Kadayal people. She was affectionately called as 'Mother' by all regardless of caste and creed.

Sacred church was a part of the parish of Kulasekharam and it was raised to the status of independant parish in 1965.Rev Fr.M.Mathias was appointed as the first parish priest of Kadayal.

Manjolai Hills

Manjolai Hills is one of the enchanting hills in tamilnadu. Manjolai Hills is concealed profound in the radiant Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats. The hills rose to a height of 1000 to 1500 feet above sea level . Most of the hills are wrapped by tea plants. Majolai Hills is landed over Manimuthar Dam and Manimuthar Water fall, which is a 70 km ride from Tirunelveli.

Manjolai hill is a great destination to keep yourself relaxed. Here your can unpack your hectic work pressure for sure. The lovely greenery surrounds the hills soothe your mind and heart. Various view points help you enjoy the real beauty of the hills where you can click in different angles.

Manjolai is placed at the height of around 1162m. It is noted for tea plantations and is compared to Ooty in all aspects. Manjolai Tea is a remarkable one,it remains in the mind of the people whoever taste it. For more Green you can visit nearby places of Manjolai namely Kakkachi and Nalumukku.

The area around Manjolai hills comprises tea plantation, Upper Kodayar Dam, a view point named Kuthiravetti. Manjolai itself has three tea estates. There are many small waterfalls amidst lush greenery all the way to the top. Manjolai has not been stepped by more humans, so you can find variety of birds and animals while trekking. Manjolai is also called the poor man's Ooty.

You need to get permission from Forest department to ride in private vehicles. Government Buses are also there to take you to hill top but check with the transport for timings. For trekkers Manjolai is a good spot for treckking with deep routed trees which are densily grown. After get digested from the beauty of Manjolai, one should definitely visit Manimuthar Falls and watch the entire scenery view using the view point mounted in Kuthiravetti.

People coming from Manimuthar should enquire about Dasan Pool and should make a halt to checkout the clean fresh water and the greenery. It is a lovely place to breathe in some chilled, fresh mountain air. Check out both the Manimuthar Dam and Papanasam Dam. Enjoy a boat ride at Vana Theertham.

Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is a lovely place and will fascinate wildlife lovers. You may also be lucky to catch a glimpse of elephants, bears, bison, wild boar and Sambar deer. However, do remember that this is a reserved forest so you will need permission from the Forest Department.

Accommodation at Manjolai is taken care by Tamilnadu Forest Department in a place called Singampatty Zamin. Another guest house is at Kuthiravetti. The ideal place to stay is the Forest department guest house in Kuthiravetti, TNEB quarters in Kothaiyar and Police quarters in Manjolai Estate. But these places are to be booked in advance and it is extremely off to the tourists as these accommodations

Travel Advisory

Permission from the Forest Department is required for going to Manjolai estate and Kuthiravetti. This can be arranged with the State Tourist Department. There are monkeys at Manimuthar Falls and visitors have to be careful of their belongings. Plastic carry bags are frowned so better to carry food in packing containers. Its our nature we should only preserve it. To visit Kodayar Dam, permission has to be availed from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials.

How to Reach

By Air: Nearest domestic airports are Thoothukudi and Madurai which a distance of 113 km and 239 km away from Manjolai Hills. Trivandrum(Kerala) is nearest International Airport which is 210 km away from here.

By Rail: Kallidaikurichi (43 km) and Veeravanallur (47 km) are the nearest railway stations. But Tirunelveli (77 km) is major Junction which is well connected with the major cities of Country.

By Road: Manjolai Hills is well connected by road from Thirunelveli, Manimutharu, Kallidaikurichi, Ambasamudram, Papanasam, Veeravanallur, Thirunelveli, Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram. Tirunelveli is located on the National Highway no. 7. It is well connected to all the major cities of Peninsular India by National as well as state highways. Thirunelveli is a two hours drive and 70 Kms away from Manjolai Estate. There are buses from Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram and Manimuthar. Local taxis are available and these operators will have the necessary passes and permits.

Matur Hanging Bridge

Mathur Hanging Bridge or Mathur Aqueduct or Mathur Hanging Trough is an aqueduct built between two villages for irrigation purposes. Its is located in Mathurr , a village in Kalkulam Thaluk Kanyakumari. The aqueduct was built over the Pahrali River. Pahrali River is also called as Parazhiyar. The Hanging Trough took the name from the place where it was built. Apart from its unique beauty it also the recrord of highest (115 feet) and the longest hanging bridge not only in India but also in Asia, with a length of around 1 km.

From the center of the Aqueduct, one can see a vast expanse of greenery, with rolling hills of the Western Ghats in the background, and the meandering Pahrali river flowing below. Peaceful atmosphere when accompanied by mesmerizing nature, creates a setting that will leave you awe struck.

Purpose of Mathur Hanging Bridge

Mathoor Aqueduct was constructed in 1966 by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,Honorable Chief Minister Kamarajar , as a drought relief measure across the river Pahrali. Its purpose is to carry water for irrigation from an elevated level of one hill to another. The irrigation water feeds the taluks of Vilavancode and Kalkulam.

Construction

The aqueduct is built across the Parali river, a small river that originates in the Mahendragiri Hills of the Western Ghats. Mathoor Aqueduct itself carries water of the Pattanamkal canal for irrigation over the Parali, from one hill to another, for a distance of close to one kilometer. This aqueduct is needed because of the undulating land terrain of the area, which is also adjacent to the hills of the Western Ghats.

Mathur Aqueduct is a concrete structure supported by 28 huge pillars, the maximum height of the pillars reaching 115 ft. The trough structure is 7 ft in height, with a width of 7.5 ft. The trough is partly covered with concrete slabs, allowing people to walk on the bridge and to see the water going through the trough. Some of the pillars are set in rocks of the Pahrali river, though some of the pillars are set in hills on either side.

There is road access to one end of the aqueduct and to the foot of the aqueduct (the level where the Pahrali flows) on the opposite side. There is a huge flight of stairs, made more recently, that allows one to climb from the level of the Pahrali river to the trough.

Tourist Season

Tourist can visit the Aqueduct throughout the year, except February to May. Since there is no rainfall during summer, so water for irrigation was stopped during that period.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

Travancore Palace is a 16th century Palace also called as Padmanabhapuram Palace or Kalkulam Palace is situated in a small village Padmanabhapuram, earlier called as Kalkulam in Kanyakumari District. Padmanabhapuram Palace was the capital of Venad Kingdom later the Capital was moved to Trivandrum.

Entrance

Padmanabhapuram was not the first stronghold of the Venad rulers in the South. The nearby Valliyur, Veerakeralaeswaram (also known as Veerakeralapuram), Thiruvithamcode, Charode, Puliyoorkurichi (Udayagiri), and Eraniel still have remnants of settlements, palaces, old fortifications and major temples that predate the foundation of Padmanabhapuram. Today there is no trace of the old palace in Keralapuram and Charode, but the ruins of a palace can still be seen in Eraniel. Kalkulam was probably chosen as an apt place for constructing a palace due to its strategic location and proximity to the rugged mountain ranges of the Western Ghats which provided natural protection to the palace and the settlements. The abundance of fertile farmland and plentiful supply of water were the major attractions that invited the royals and other settlers to this region.

Mani Medai

Within the ancient Kalkulam fortification is the sprawling Padmanabhapuram Palace complex, an early administrative headquarters of the erstwhile Venad rulers. When searching for the roots of the fort and palace at Kalkulam one cannot overlook the Mudaliyar records which hint that the forts in Kalkulam and nearby Udayagiri came into existence just before 1600 A.D., during the reign of Iravi Varma Kulasekharan (r.1592-1609). John Nieuhoff, the seventeenth century Dutch traveller recorded: "Kalkulong (Kalkulam) is a very large city…being on one side strengthened by inaccessible mountains, on the other by wall, the under most of it is of stone, the uppermost of brickwork, in all 24 feet high, the royal palace stands at the west end, being surrounded by a stone wall."

Architecture

Over 400 years old, Padmanabhapuram Palace is considered to be the largest wooden palace in all of Asia. Spread over an area of 6.5acres with over 15 edifices every bit of this magnificent complex boasts of intricate woodwork that highlights the outstanding skills of the artisans of yore. Nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats this ancient architectural marvel portrays the cultural opulence of God’s Own Country.

The sprawling palace complex, secured by a stone fortification, had a moat running all around the fort walls. A mukhya vāthil, the principal gateway, located on the western side of the fort wall acts as the main entrance to the complex. The palace complex is constructed using locally available materials and techniques. Stone, quarried from nearby regions, was used to build the foundation and also for the pillars on the ground floor. The records associated with the construction of the fortification indicate the use of laterite for fashioning the battlements atop the double layered stone, however, burnt brick and lime mortar was mostly employed to build the structures within the palace complex. Lime, mixed with various herbs and secret ingredients, were used to lay the floor, which was polished to a mirror-like finish.

The exquisite craftsmanship of the local carpenters is best exhibited in the timber elements seen in the palace. Timber is used for constructing the walls, the roof frame, and also the structural elements such as pillars and beams. The humid tropical climate and the heavy Monsoons have an important role in the evolution of a particular architectural style in Kerala. The many internal courtyards served multiple purposes – as light wells facilitating better lighting and ventilation in the interiors as well as the core around which everyday life revolved in the olden days. A unique feature of the complex is that the vast pile of buildings are interconnected by means of covered corridors and overhead walkways that provide easy access to different sections of the palace complex.

A symphony created by brilliant artisans in wood and stone, the Padmanabhapuram Palace is an artwork in itself and it is no wonder that this monument of outstanding engineering has withstood the test of time.

Holy Mother of Good Health - Velankanni

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health (Velankanni Matha Church ), also known as Sanctuary of Our Lady of Vailankanni, is a Marian shrine located at the small town of Velankanni in Tamil Nadu, South India. The Roman Catholic Latin Rite Basilica is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health. Devotion to Our Lady of Good Health of Velankanni can be traced back to the mid-16th century, and is attributed to three separate miracles at the sites surrounding the Basilica: The apparition of Blessed Mary and the Christ Child to a slumbering shepherd boy, the healing of a handicapped buttermilk vendor, and the rescue of Portuguese sailors from a deadly sea storm. These accounts are mere oral lore with no written record or attested sources to support them.

More than 500 years later, the nine-day festival and celebration is still observed and draws nearly 5 million pilgrims each year. The Shrine of Our Lady of Vailankanni is also known as "the Lourdes of the East" because it is one of the most frequented pilgrimage centres in India.

History

The first Marian apparition is said to have occurred in May 1570, when a local shepherd boy was delivering milk to a nearby house. Along the way he met a beautiful woman holding a child, who asked for some milk for the little one. After giving her the milk, he continued on his way, and upon making the delivery discovered that the jug was now completely full of fresh, cool milk. A small shrine was built near the site where the boy encountered the woman, a location that came to be called Matha Kulam, which means Our Lady’s Pool.

The second Marian apparition is said to have happened in 1597, not far from Matha Kulam. A beautiful woman with a young boy in her arms appeared to a young crippled boy selling buttermilk. The little boy asked for some buttermilk, and after he drank it, the woman asked the boy selling buttermilk to visit a gentleman in the next town and ask him to build a chapel in her honor at that location. The boy set out quickly and realized that he was no longer lame. A small thatched chapel was quickly built in honor of Our Lady of Health, called in Tamil “Arokia Matha”.

The third incident occurred when a Portuguese ship sailing from Macao to Sri Lanka was caught in a storm in the Bay of Bengal. They invoked the help of the Blessed Virgin under her title "Star of the Sea". The storm subsided and the 150 men on board were saved. It was September 8, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. In thanksgiving, the sailors rebuilt the Shrine to Our Lady of Good Health, and continued to enhance it whenever their voyages brought them to the area.

The shrine that started as a thatched chapel in the mid-sixteenth century became a parish church in 1771 when Catholics in India were under persecution from the Dutch. Later in 1962 it was granted a Special status of a Minor Basilica by Pope John XXIII.

The shrine of Vailankanni was elevated to the status of 'Minor Basilica' and merged with the Major Basilica of Mary (Mary majore) in Rome on 3 November 1962 by Pope John XXIII.

Significance and Pilgrimage

For Goan and Konkani people, she is called "Shantadurga" (most compassionate one). This especially includes use of Kotimaram, which has been described as an extended influence of Hinduism on Catholicism, thus making the Basilica a meeting point of two of the major religions of the world.

Being a Roman Catholic Marian church, it is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health. Virgin Mary is depicted wearing a sari. The usual time for pilgrimage is during the annual festival between August 29 to September 6 and Christmas. Some pilgrims, instead of using a mode of transport, perform "walking pilgrimages" to it. They attend mass, novenas, flag-hoisting and carry a palkhi of Mary in a procession. A major event is the procession, where only women are allowed to pull the first car and a statue of Mary is in the last and most decorated one. People of other religions also take part. The pilgrims sometimes shave their heads as an offering and perform ear-piercing ceremonies, both being Hindu traditions. Another ritual considered sacred is dipping oneself in the pond. There is a holy flag which is lowered to signal the end of the festival.

Due to the number of pilgrim visits during festival season, the Indian Railways introduced special train services to the town of Velankanni.

Architecture

The Basilica is built in the Gothic style of architecture. The southern side was extended in 1928 and the northern in 1933. The Shrine Basilica contains three chapels, as well as Our Lady's Tank, Church Museum, Priests' Residence, Offering Center, Stations of the Cross, Stations of the Rosary, Shrine Mega Mahal and Vailankanni Beach. The building is painted in white, except for the roof that is made of red tiles.

The early part of the 20th century marked rivalry between Jesuits and Franciscans regarding their influence on missionary work in Velankanni. In 1928, the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (managed by the Jesuits) was demolished and the statues were brought to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Health; in 1933 the Shrine was expanded with two new wings, to the right and to the left of the 'Main Altar', meeting the nave at right angles.

A spacious vestry was provided immediately behind the altar. Thus the entire sacred edifice began to assume the shape of a Latin Cross. Right over the center of the ancient main altar was the miraculous image of Our Lady of Good Health.

Velankanni Matha Pond

In 1956, a new welcome arch was blessed and opened by Bishop Sundaram. The illuminated arch stood to show the way to eager pilgrims who sought the protection of Mary. In January 1961, a new central altar, executed in white marble, replaced the former one made of cement concrete. In 1974-75, an extension of the basilica was built behind the existing central altar to accommodate the multilingual pilgrims. The extension included a two-storied church with 93 feet (28 m) high dome and 82 feet (25 m) high gothic spirals. It was designed to resemble the Basilica in Lourdes, France.

History

Kurusadi

Our Lady of Fatima Church, Kallukoottam, traces its humble origin as a Bhajan Kurusady (a thatched shed for carols during Christmas) in 1951. After a decade of coming together to exercise their simple faith, the community of 18 families, under the leadership of Mr Anthony Muthu, was raised to the status of substation of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Mankuzhi, in 1960. From then on the Eucharistic celebration for wedding and funeral was conducted. To bring the children up in the Catholic faith, rudimentary catechism classes were organised on one of the week days. The Eucharistic celebration at Christmas and Easter was introduced from 1963.

The administration of the substation of Our Lady of Fatima Church was shifted to St. Francis Xavier Parish, Konamkadu, in 1964. With the new administration, it gained the status of substation with Sunday Masses. To cater to the spiritual development of the adults, the Christian Life community for women and for men were started respectively in the years 1965 and 1978. In order to help the sick and the poor, the St. Vincent De Paul Society was started in 1979. As part of spiritual reformation, Basic ecclesial communities (anbiyangal) were introduced in the substation in 1994. There was no practice of individual tax in the church until 1988 but then the majority of the people felt the need of paying an affordable tax, agreed by the faithful, for the maintenance and upkeep of the church. Over the years the physical structure of the church too got transformed from a simple thatched house to a concrete church that could accommodate about 400 parishioners. In 2008, the substation of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Kallukoottam, was raised to the status of an independent parish and Fr Mariadasan was appointed as the first parish priest of the newly formed parish. Under the leadership of Fr Andrews, the second parish priest of the parish, a community hall and a new presbytery were constructed in the years 2013 and 2014 respectively. From 23rd May, 2018 Fr. Jokens is serving as the parish priest of this parish. Every Last Friday of the month charismatic prayer service with Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament is conducted. Now, Kolping Society is promoting natural home garden where vegetables are cultivated without any chemical manure, which is flourishing. Many families participate in the event.

St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica, Chennai

Santhome Church in Chennai also known as Santhome Cathedral Basilica and International Shrine of Saint Thomas Cathedral Basilica, sits on the tomb built over the mortal remains of one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. Saint Thomas had come to India in A.D.52, was martyred in A.D.72 and buried in this very site then known as Mylapore. “San Thome” assumes its name from Saint Thomas.

It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. In 1893, it was rebuilt as a church with the status of a cathedral by the British. The British version still stands today. It was designed in Neo-Gothic style, favoured by British architects in the late 19th century. This church is one of the only three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two being St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain.

History

According to legend, Saint Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, arrived at Muziris in present-day Kerala state in India from the Roman province of Judea in A.D. 52 and preached between A.D. 52 and A.D 72, when he was martyred on St. Thomas Mount.

It is claimed that St Thomas' apostolic ministry in India took place specifically at Cranganore along the Malabar coast from 52 A.D to 68 A.D. His journey through Kerala is said to have resulted in numerous conversions. After spending 10 years on the Malabar coast he is said to have travelled Eastwards across the Deccan Plateau, arriving in Mylapore in 68 A.D. The cave at little mount is claimed to be his favourite preaching spot. A 2000 year old never drying, a miraculous stream of water on a rock face are said to be examples of the apostle's divine exploits. A church atop St. Thomas mount was built by Portuguese in 1547 to mark the spot. It was on this St. Thomas Mount that the apostle was said to be killed by a lance which pierced through his back.

Main Altar of St Thomas Basilica, Chennai

His mortal remains were believed to be buried in the location over which the present day Santhomes Cathedral Basilica stands. Sometime in the 10th century A.D a group of Nestorian Christians from Persia founded the Christian village of San Thomes and proceeded to build a church over the burial site of St. Thomas. This structure fell to ruins between 14th and 15th century. In 1522 the Portuguese moved the apostle's remains to a new tomb and church which attained the status of Cathedral in 1606.

Pope Pius XII honoured the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore raising it to the rank of Minor Basilica by apostolic brief dated 16 March 1956. Massive followings and the immense devotion of people to a very ancient image of the Blessed Virgin also known as “Our Lady of Mylapore” was among the motives that prompted the Pope to bestow this honour.

There was 118 years of insecurity and uncertainty from the time the Golconda’s occupied San Thome in 1662 to 1780. No considerable changes happened to the original structure of the church built in 1523. It was only in 1893 that his Excellency Dom Henrique José Reed da Silva, Bishop of Mylapore resolved to build a new church with the tomb of the apostle in the centre. The second small tower in the centre of the existing cathedral points to the exact place where the apostle was buried. The present Gothic style church was completed in 1896 and duly consecrated by Rt. Rev. Dom Henrique José Reed da Silva, the first Bishop of the diocese. In 1956 the church was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica.

San Thome Basilica is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. In 1956, Pope Pius XII raised the church to the status of a Basilica Minor, and on 11 February 2006, it was declared a national shrine by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. The San Thome Basilica is a pilgrimage centre for Christians in India. The church also has an attached museum.

St. Stephen's Church, Ooty

St. Stephen's Church is located on the road to Mysore in Ooty, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the oldest churches in the Nilgiris district.The St Stephens Church, Ooty is one of the architectural marvels that the British left for us. A very old church, which dates back to the 19th century, it was build to coincide with the birthday of King George IV. The main beam and all the required timber were taken from Tipu Sultan's palace after the British defeated him in the Mysore War. The timber was bought all the way down from Seringapatanam and carried through the Sigur Ghat. The marvel of British architecture is clearly visible in the church and it also has a painting of the Last Supper.

Foundation Stone of St. Stephen Church , Ooty

History

The foundation of the church was laid down by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, the Governor of Madras, on April 23, 1829. Captain John James Underwood was in charge of the construction and designing of the entire church, and he ensured that only high-quality wood was used for the building of the St Stephen's Church. It would be interesting to note that the timber that was used in the construction process was brought from Tipu Sultan's palace after the British had successfully defeated him.

The St Stephen's Church in Ooty is a symbol of the rich history of the place and dates back to the nineteenth century. Stephen Rumbold Lushington, who was the then Governor of Madras, was keen on building a church in the area since he felt that there was a need to construct a church that was exclusively for the British.

The Governor laid the church's foundation on 23 April in 1829. The date was so chosen that it would coincide with the birthday of King George IV. On 5 November 1830, the church was consecrated by John Matthias Turner, the Bishop of Calcutta. The St Stephen's Church was finally opened to the public communion on Easter Sunday- 3 April 1831. Following the independence of the country, the church came under the CSI or the Church of South India.

Architecture

The St Stephen's Church is famous not just because it is a site of great religious importance and value, but also because it is one of the best known colonial structures that exist in the country. The spectacular Gothic architecture of the church is worth mentioning, and the church is renowned for its beauty, elegance and charm.

In charge of the architecture and design of the St Stephen's Church was Captain John James Underwood. A total expense of INR 24,000 was incurred to build the church, which is a tremendous amount in the context of those times. The primary beam of the church and all the timber that was required were both taken from Tipu Sultan's palace after the British had successfully defeated him in the Mysore War. The wood was brought all the way down from Seringapatanam and carried through the Sigur Ghat.

Noteworthy attractions of the St Stephen's Church include its superb wooden architecture and the grand painting of the Last Supper on the western wall. Gorgeous stained glass windows that portray various scenes, like the crucifixion of Christ and the image of Mother Mary holding baby Jesus in her arms, adorn the eastern wall of the church. An ancient graveyard that is located at the back side of the church is also particularly appealing to the visitors.

This church also has an unusual and interesting feature of four hammer like structures. This structure is tied on some inverted-V shaped wooden planks using wires. When these wires are pulled from the floor, the hammer-like structures produce an amazing and magical musical sound.
It is also intriguing to note that even after all these years, the St Stephen's Church shows no sign of wear and tear and has bravely battled all ravages of time.

The Solaiyar Dam is part of the Solaiyar Hydroelectric Project (HEP). The project comprises the main Soliayar Dam, the Solaiyar Flanking, and the Solaiyar Saddle Dam.

Upper Solaiyar or Upper Sholayar Dam is located 20 km (12 mi) from Valparai, a hill station in the Anaimalai Hills of the Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu India. As it is a part of the hydroelectric project of Tamil Nadu, special permission is required to visit the dam.

Valparai is located 64 km (40 miles) from Pollachi and 104 km (65 miles) from Chalakudy, Kerala. The nearest railway station is Pollachi.

The Solaiyar dam is a vital reservoir under the Parambikulam Aliyar Project and has a water storage capacity of 160 ft (49 m). The reservoir's overflowing waters are let into the Parambikulam Reservoir through the saddle dam.

It was constructed by a team working under K. Gopalswamy Mudhaliar[citation needed], the most popular engineer in that area. Solaiyar Dam was officially opened in 1965; the Solaiyar Flanking was built in 1964 and the Solaiyar Saddle Dam in 1965.

The area of the reservoir is 8.705 square km. The height of the main dam is 66 metres, its width is 430 metres, and length 430.60 metres. The Solaiyar Flanking has a height of 28 metres and width of 19 metres. The Solaiyar Saddle Dam is 259 metres high and 109 metres wide

A Grizzled Squirrel in Srivilliputhur Wildlife Sanctuary

The Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Srivilliputhur Wildlife Sanctuary, was established in 1988 to protect the Near threatened grizzled giant squirrel (Ratufa macroura). Occupying an area of 485.2 km2, it is bordered on the southwest by the Periyar Tiger Reserve and is one of the best preserved forests south of the Palghat Gap.

The sanctuary covers 485 square kilometres (187 sq mi) in western Tamil Nadu, South India in the eastern water-shed of the Western Ghats and consists of high hills and valleys, with a number of peaks reaching up to 1,800 metres (5,900 ft).

The Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary is located from 9° 21' to 9° 48' N and 77°21' to 77°46' E. The sanctuary lies mostly in Virudhunagar district especially in Srivilliputtur and partly in Madurai district. The sanctuary is bounded to the north by the Andipatti hills, south by Tirunelveli District, east by Srivilliputhur and Rajapalayam towns and west by Theni town and Theni District. It is the eastern boundary for the Periyar river watershed. This sanctuary is contiguous to Periyar Tiger Reserve on the south western side and the Megamalai Reserve Forest on the north western side and Its southern limit is contiguous with the Sivagiri Reserved Forest of Tirunelveli Forest Division.

Lion-tailed Macaques

The elevation ranges from 100 metres (330 ft) in the plains and rises to the highest peak, Kottamala, at 2,010 metres (6,590 ft). Average annual rainfall 849.1 millimetres (33.43 in) varies between 800 millimetres (31 in) - 2,300 millimetres (91 in) in different areas of the sanctuary. Water sources for the sanctuary are the Kallar and Mullaperiyar Dams and the Periyar, Naragaiar, Pachaiar, Mangar, Kovilar and Pairakudraiar rivers.

In addition to grizzled giant squirrels, other animals seen here are Bengal tiger, bonnet macaque, common langur, elephants, flying squirrels, Gaur, Indian giant squirrel, leopard, lion-tailed macaques, mouse deer, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri Tahrs, palm civets, porcupine, sambar, slender loris, sloth bear, spotted deer, tree shrews, wild boar and wild cats.

Resident and migrating elephants are common. The wildlife census in 2002 counted 156 elephants. There were more grizzled giant squirrels sighted in 2009 than in 2008. In 2008, a group of 30 lion-tailed macaques were sighted during the annual census, but in the 2009 census more than 45 lion-tailed macaques, including a sizeable number of young macaques, were sighted in a single group between Nagariyar and Periyakavu patch. Nilgiri Tahr have been sighted in the entire division starting from Kottamala in Rajapalayam to Perumal Malai in Sathuragiri Hills near Sundara Mahalingam temple in Saptoor. A tiger was also seen in Sathuragiri during the 2009 census.In recent years there has been a significant increase in the population of the tahrs with the census in 2011 putting their numbers at 220 individuals.

Recognised as an Important Bird Area,over 275 species of birds are seen in this sanctuary including 14 species of birds endemic to the Western Ghats, such as the critically endangered Oriental white-backed vulture and the long-billed vulture, vulnerable species Nilgiri wood-pigeon, broad-tailed grass warbler, red-faced malkoha and the white-bellied shortwing (Brachypteryx major) and near threatened species like the great pied hornbill, Nilgiri pipit, black-and-orange flycatcher and the Nilgiri flycatcher. The Malayan night heron is of lesser concern. The primary raptors here are the serpent eagle, hawks and black eagle. A bird survey in 2013 observed in the sanctuary rare endemic species including Sri Lankan frogmouth, mountain and rufous-bellied hawk-eagles, great Indian and Malabar pied hornbills, mountain and green imperial pigeons which are all species found only in the higher altitudes of Western Ghats. Some of the rare migratory birds spotted included the steppe eagle, Eurasian sparrowhawk and bluecapped rockthrush.

Mouse Deer in Gizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary has numerous reptiles including king cobras, Indian rock python and many endemic species namely pit vipers, ornate flying snake, Draco or gliding lizard, large-scaled calotes and Monilesaurus ellioti and amphibians including endemic ones like Micrixalus, Indirana, Nyctibatrachus, Ramanella, Rhacophorus malabaricus, Raorchestes and Pseudophilautus.

There are over 220 species of butterflies documented in the sanctuary including many rare and endemic species. Some of the rare butterflies spotted here include Evershed's ace, silver royal, orange awlet, and Hampson's hedge blue

Flora

The sanctuary is a mix of tropical evergreen forests and semi-evergreen forests (69.32 square kilometres (26.76 sq mi)), dry deciduous forests and moist mixed deciduous forests (51.66 square kilometres (19.95 sq mi)), grassland (152.18 square kilometres (58.76 sq mi)) and cultivated (121.07 square kilometres (46.75 sq mi)) km². The sanctuary has one Medicinal Plant Conservation Area (MPCA) located at Thaniparai. 69 plant species belonging to 58 taxa and 42 families are used by the Paliyar tribal people, living in the sanctuary, to treat 15 ailments.

How to reach Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is 45 km away from Virudhunagar town and about 75–80 km away from Madurai city. Srivilliputtur railway station is situated 5 km way from the sanctuary. Forest rest houses are available at Mudungiar, Pudupatti and Mudaliaroothu. There are many private lodges near the sanctuary.

There are no roads inside the sanctuary and hence visitors must cover it on foot. Guides are available on request from the sanctuary office to accompany tourists on treks.

Meghamalai

Meghamalai popularly called the Highwavy Mountains or Paccha Kumachi" which means green peak, is a mountain range situated in the Western Ghats in Theni district, Tamil Nadu near to Kumily, Kerala. It is dotted with cardamom plantations and tea estates. The place is situated at an elevation of 1,500 m above sea level and it is rich in flora and fauna. This area, now mostly planted with tea, includes Cloudlands, Highwavys, Venniar and Manalar estates, the access to which is now largely restricted. It still includes large untouched remnants of evergreen forest.

Vegetation ranges from scrub forests at the foothills, up to ubiquitous expanses of tea and coffee estates, to pepper, cardamom, cinnamon plantations and finally to the dense evergreen forests at the top.

Meghamalai forest area hosts a variety of birds namely, Rare Indian hornbills are found here.These great Indian hornbill is one of the largest hornbills and these are found from sea level up to 5,000 feet (1,500 m). Hornbills are famous for their nesting ritual. They are becoming rare, mainly due to their hunting for their meat and destruction of their habitat. Protection and restoration of destroyed forest areas will aid the conservation of hornbills in the region.

Like the Indian Hornbills, another endangered species also found in Megamali forest, the Grizzled giant squirrel is brown in color and it resembles the size of a small cat.It jumps from one tree to another and its looks like flying animal.

Resident and migratory elephants are common. Other animals sighted are tiger, leopard, Nilgiri tahr, gaur, spotted deer, barking deer, sambar deer, wild boar, porcupine, Nilgiri langur, lion-tailed macaque, common langur, bonnet macaque, sloth bear, grey junglefowl, smooth-coated otter and flying squirrel.

Bird like red-whiskered bulbul, common iora, white-browed wagtail, grey wagtail, pied bush chat, Blyth's reed warbler, barn swallow, spotted dove, Asian paradise flycatcher, brahminy kite, long-tailed shrike and over 100 species of birds have been identified.

Tea estates and Coffee

The Highwavys afford a view of the entire mountain range of Varusanadu Hills. There are large private tea, spices and coffee plantations all around, notably the Highwavys Estates owned by the Woodbriar Group, Ananda Plantations, Ponsiva Plantations and Fieldmede Estate, which has the largest holdings of plantations in Meghamalai, an artificial lake and plenty of scope for making leisurely walks. Kardana Coffee Estate is situated in the High Wavy Mountains at 9°42′N 77°24′E.

Falls

Dams

Six dams on the hill and originating place of Suruli Theertham (Suruli falls near Cumbum town) are popular attractions for tourists. From Manalar dam, one can view the deep Cumbum Valley and the villages of Theni district. The Department of Tourism has planned to introduce a boat or ferry service to enable tourists to access the area.

Vellimalai

The Vellimalai (Silver Mountain, 1,650 m) area is a heart of Meghamalai. Silver-lined clouds seem to rest gently on green hilltops; nestled in this region is the place where the river Vaigai originates. This place offers an opportunity to see wild animals and aesthetically and scientifically managed tea gardens.

Meghamalai Falls (also called Suruli Falls) is on the Suruli River originating in the Meghamalai Hills. Water flows down 190 feet through the twin falls year-round. There are frequent visits by elephants, spotted deer, gaur and other wild animals at dawn and dusk. Forest Department officials have plans to assist tourists in viewing these wild animals.

How to Reach Meghamalai

The Meghamalai mountain range can be approached two ways from Theni via Chinnamanur, and from Andipatti via Kandamanayakkanur. Both Theni and Andipatti can be accessed by road from Madurai and Dindigul. Theni is 76 km from Madurai. The approach via Chinnamannur has more scenery. Only forest lodges and panchayath rest houses are available at the hill top. Day trippers may stay in hotels in Theni, Chinnamanur and Andipatti. The distance from Madurai is 130 km.

Visiters Tips

Although the entire place is referred to as "Megamalai", the real beauty actually lies in the areas beyond the Megamalai. They are Highwavys, Lower Manalar, Upper Manalar, Vattaparai, Maharajamettu, Iravangalar dam, Thoovanam dam, Vanniar dam, Thekkady dam etc. It requires a little trek it seems to reach those places.
The entire Megamalai hills was under private control till 2009. It was during 2009 that the place was declared as a Wildlife sanctuary after which it was opened up for public access. Its probably owing to this long deniance of public access, ill-maintained roads and not being in the radar of tourism, that Megamalai manages to retain its pristine beauty. The Govt. has plans of promoting this place for tourism. Roads being repaired, boat services in the lake etc. Hence before it becomes one more commercial pot boiler like an Ooty or Kodai and gets spoilt, ensure you make it to this place.
The roads leading from the foothills till the upper manalar, all the way is completely ravaged. Do not take a chance with your family car. It requires a SUV or a 4X4 drive. Bike might be an option if you are willing to bear the back-breaking bumpy ride. However considering the remoteness of the place, its better not to find yourself caught in the middle of nowhere with tyres punctured. Public buses do ply every 3 hrs from Theni. But it won't let you have the fun of stopping at your own leisure and enjoy the surroundings. Hence its ideal to book a cab. It not only gives you the flexibility of visiting places of your choice, it will also save you from a gruelling drive behind the wheels.
In most places you will not receive mobile signal except for BSNL users. So people who are fussy about it, better carry a BSNL sim. Others, who like me, prefer to stay disconnected to the world back home and get connected to the nature here enjoy the detachment!!
People who are keen on animal watching can opt for a early morning walk at 6 am towards the Vattaparai or Maharajamettu. If you are lucky enough, can sight the odd wild animals or the elephants visiting the lake for a drink.
The place is infested with leeches. A few seconds of landing your feet on damp grass and the next moment you will have half a dozen uninvited visitors creeping up your legs. Better to wear a 3/4th and sandals so that it will help you notice that these blood suckers are on their way up. Carry a bottle of concentrated salt water to remove them off your body incase they stick to you.
The route via Chinnamanoor is worth taking for its scenery
Some of the options before (or after) visiting Megamalai are Chinna suruli falls in varusanadu, Suruli falls near cumbam, Kumbakkarai & Sothuparai falls in periyakulam. All these are less than a couple of hours drive from Theni
There are only 3 food outlets in Megamalai. Senthil Mess, Murugan tea shop and another one.

A View of Kiliyur Falls - Yercaud

Kiliyur Water Falls is a waterfall in the Shervarayan hill range in the Eastern Ghats Tamil nadu. The waters overflowing the Yercaud Lake fall 300 ft (91 m) into the Kiliyur Valley. The falls is situated at a distance of 2.5 km (1.6 miles) from the Yercaud Lake. The final 500 m (1,600 ft) or so consist only of a rough unpaved steep pathway. But it is a breathtaking sight in the monsoon time when the water levels are at the maximum. The best time to visit this place is immediately after the monsoons.

These falls drop from a height of 300 ft and are famous for its activities like boating and swimming. The surplus water of the Yercaud Lake and the water from the Shevaroy Hills fall deep into the Kiliyur valley from a height of about 91 meter. The view of the fall is indeed spellbinding and eye catching.

A hardcore trekker can trek through the woody forests from the lake to the bottom of the falls in about an hour. When you commence walking towards the fall from the Yercaud Lake, you shall experience the final 500 meter distance only of a rough unpaved steep pathway.

It is essential to be properly geared up to visit the Kiliyur Falls. Trekking shoes, food supplies and lots of water or glucose are a must. Due to its discreet location, not many families prefer to visit the place unless they are really enthusiastic. The stone and iron steps, tall and short, uneven, can make the ascent very difficult and tiring. In case of a mishap at the falls, there is no rescue team at the aid of the tourists! One can however visit the falls with caution and spend an inexpensive weekend in the lap of Mother Nature, in her true and unexplored form.

Trekking

The trek to Kiliyur is short, but makes up for what it lacks in distance with adventure. This action-packed trail takes you to the seasonal Kiliyur Falls, located a couple of kilometers from Yercaud Lake in Tamil Nadu. Being extremely easy to identify, this is the kind of trail that is perfect for trekkers with any level of experience. Trek over bare metal staircases that seem to endlessly descend into the depths of green valleys, stern-looking rocks that form the forest floor, estates of coffee and a queen’s royal bath.

To begin this trail, find the Yercaud Lake and the sign near it that points in the direction of Kiliyur Falls – 3.2 km to be exact. From the beautiful lake among the hills, a narrow path leads you onward.

You can experience Kiliyur in two ways, depending on time constraints and how deeply you want to explore. Since most of this hilly land has been converted to coffee estates that are under private ownership, you will need a guide for the more intricate trails. Do not attempt these on your own as the estate owners barely hesitate to call the police on trespassers.

If you want to trek to Kiliyur Falls on your own, you can follow the general trail of 4 kms that is open to the public. Employing a guide means that you can visit the viewpoint for a more stunning view of the falls, or go all the way to the bottom where they crash onto strong rock. A local guide can also take you to other wonderful trekking destinations in the Shevaroy range of hills.

Our lady of Ransom Church Kanyakumari Tamilnadu

Our lady of Ransom Church of is located in Kanyakumari the southmost part of tamilnadu where Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal meet. The Kanyakumari Parish almost coincides with the civil village of Kanyakumari. It is closely associated with the mainstream Catholic faith in India. St Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ had visited this place.

History

The tomb stones unearthed at Kumari Muttom, near Kanniyakumari contain evidences to show that Catholics were living there for many centuries. The tomb stones dated 1496 contain the edict of the local ruler granting tax exemptions to the residents of Kumari Muttom and authorizing levy of a cess from the fishermen in Kumari Muttom. The aggregate income thus generated had to be used to keep the lights of the church burning.

In 1542 when St. Francis Xavier came to Cape Comerin (Kanniyakumari) he found ‘Our Lady of Delights Grotto’, at Kanniyakumari. Then it became a center for mission activities of the Jesuits from Thoothoor to Ramanathapuram.

It is believed that Our Lady of Delights Grotto, in which St. Francis Xavier prayed, later became the church of Our Lady of Ransom. Our Lady of Ransom is the Patron of the congregation in Spain which redeemed the Christians from the Muslim invasion in the year 1218. The people of Kanniyakumari combined the name Ransom with Delight and call their patron Alangara Upakara Matha.

An 18th Century Old Church

A small thatched church was upgraded to a big church of Roman architecture was constructed in 1700 AD. A statue of Mother Mary made during 16th century derived from Rome to Kanniyakumari. A golden altar was developed and the statue of Mother Mary was placed in the center of the altar and venerated by the name of Alangara matha. The statue of St. Joseph and St. Francis Xavier were placed in the right side and left side respectively. There are wooden carvings depicting the coronation of Mary as queen of heaven and earth. Intricately carved depictions of angels playing the musical instruments like violin, flute and drums in the upper and side adorn the altar. Jesus Christ inviting his disciples for ministries and forgiving Mary Magdalene were depicted in the side of the altar. Cardinals, a Pope, and soldiers having foliage in their hand are depicted. There are carvings of 12 disciples of Jesus Christ. A lamb lying on the Holy Bible is depicted in the lower portion of the altar. The old church remains part of the new church.

In 1917 a foreign merchant ship got struck to the sand shore of Leepuram, Kanyakumari. The strenuous efforts of the crew and other experts to restore it did not help them. Hence they decided to abandon the ship and put it for an auction.

Mr. Kayathan Villavarayan a merchant from Tuticorin paid the highest bid and assumed the ownership of the abandoned ship. He had donated the iron mast to Our Lady of Ransom Church, Kanyakumari. The kattumarams of Kanyakumari were brought to Leepuram to take the mast to Kanyakumari. It is said that as soon as the mast was loaded on the kattumarams, the mast together with the kattaumarams sunk into the sea water. After a few minutes, the kattumarams and the mast began to float. The bye standers were astonished to see the grace of Our Lady of Ransom. Then they took the mast to Kanyakumari by road.

When the mast was taken to the church yard, another major difficulty was faced regarding the erection of the mast. They consulted the experts and engineers and came to the decision of inserting it into a hole cut out of a large stone. The stone cutters were approached and they searched for such a huge stone that could serve this particular purpose. In spite of rigorous search, they could not find out any suitable stone. It is believed that Our Lady of Ransom appeared to a stone cutter in dream and indicated the location of a suitable stone. The stone cutter accompanied by the people of Kanyakumari reached the location indicated and they were surprised to see a big stone, befitting the purpose.

They took the stone, made a bore hole and inserted the mast into it. To make the fitting more concrete and long lasting, they poured molted led and erected the mast.

New Church

The foundation stone for the new church was laid on 31 May 1900 by Fr. John Consolvez. Mr. Pakiam Pillai of the Vadakkankulam was the architect of the new church. It is the model of ancient Gothic Art and culture. The length of the new Church is 153 feet, breadth 53 feet and height is 153 feet. All these depict the breads of the Holy Rosary.

This entire dimension depicts the beads of the Holy Rosary. There are 12 towers in the church which depict 12 disciples of Jesus Christ.

The porch ends with a pointed arch. The church contains totally 7 doors, 3 as porch and 2 doors facing north and 2 doors facing south which depict the 7 fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Several clustered Gothic piers provide support to the main tower. Inside the church, there are compound pillars which resemble vertical shafts that provide support to the ceiling which is made with nave vault and transverse arches.

Two side towers attached with the main tower act as belfry containing the church bells which have been imported from Italy in 1900 AD. The bell was used for several decades to signal time.

Gigantic statues of St. Thomas and St. Francis Xavier are placed on the main tower. The veneration of Mother Mary is celebrated every year from May 1–31.

In 1914 Msgr. Vincent Fdo celebrated the First Mass in the newly built Church. In 1956 Rev. Fr. Josaphath Maria completed the front elevation and the pinnacles.

In 2006 the parish celebrated the golden jubilee of the erection of the golden cross and 106th year of laying the foundation of the church.

When entering to the church one can see a beautiful statue of Mother Mary got from Italy and clad in a sari – like in most [South Indian] churches and a little Cross on the altar. The beautiful paintings of four disciples of Jesus Christ and writers of New Testament of the Bible namely Mark, Matthew, Luke and John are exquisite on the main altar and the Mother Mary statue is located in the middle of the main altar. The colorful light patterns thrown by the stained glass windows on side of the church gives a rainbow appearance inside the church. The Mother Mary statue situated in the old Church and is from Rome and is the main attraction of this church.

Annual Feast and Golden car procession

Every year the feast of Our Lady of Ransom is celebrated for 10 days in the month of December. The feast of Our Lady of Ransom begins with the flag hoisting on the following Friday immediately after the feast of St. Francis Xavier, Kottar which falls on 3 December. The first day of the feast begins with the flag hoisting. During the festival, every morning festival mass is celebrated and in the evening there will be benediction with special prayers and preaching. On the eight day evening Corpus Christi Procession is held. The ninth day evening has special vespers and celebrations held. The culmination of the feast is the golden car procession: two golden cars are taken on the 9th and 10th days of the feasts. Our Lady of delight is taken in procession in the 1st car, which was made in 1798. St. Joseph, the spouse of Mary is taken in procession in the 2nd car, which was made in 1833.

Car Festival Our lady of Ransom Kanyakumari

Two golden chariots dedicated to Our lady of Ransom and St. Joseph have been constructed during 1798 AD and 1833 AD respectively. The Golden car procession on the main street around the church is convened during the annual festival of Our Lady of Ransom. During the golden car procession, the traditional Nathaswaram music and peculiar praising of Mother Mary by an art of pala padal. Pilgrims from different places of the country and the state visit the church during the annual feast.

At present Kanniyakumari parish has 2,850 Catholic families, which are organised into 88 Basic Christian Communities. The total Number of the Catholics amounts to 12,839. There are 21 pious associations. The parish established an elementary school in the year 1882 and now 540 children are studying in the vernacular language. The parish has a Higher Secondary School established in the year 1921, where 1350 students are studying.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church Tiruchirapalli

The Our Lady of Lourdes Church is located in the city of Tiruchirapalli in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The Church is devoted to Our Lady of Lourdes.

The church is decked out in Gallo-Catholic design, from Neo-Gothic spires to anguished scenes of crucifixion and martyrdom painted inside. In a note of cross-religious pollination, icons of Virgin Mary are garlanded in flower necklaces. It was constructed in the year 1890 AD. The church is situated near the rock fort. The main tower is 220 feet in height, and the small tower is 120 feet in height. The statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis Xavier and St. John de Britto are placed at the center of the tower. The church bell is set at a height of 90 feet.

Our Lady of Assumption Church, Kamanayakkanpatti, Kovilpatti,Tuticorin

Kamanayakkanpatti played an important part in the former Madurai Mission and might be considered as the Mother Church for the southern region. It was also the center of evangelization in the Tirunelveli inland territory at the end of the 17th and 18th centuries. It had covered up Srivilliputhur (north-west), Vadakkankulam (south), Tenkasi (South-west) and the inland areas in the East.

In 1664 Fr. Freyre visited this area and found that there were Christians already here. In 1684, a small church was built by Rev. Fr. John De Britto, when he visited and made this place as the center for the missionary activities. Fr. Xavier Porgheese was the first parish priest who resided here and administered the Sacraments.It was the first time that K.N.P. was mentioned in the records of the history.Around the year 1690, it is said that a girl fell into an open well and died, while the parents and the villagers pleaded to Our Lady, she was miraculously brought back to life. Fr. Beschi came over during 1712-1715 and stayed here to learn the local language. It was at this time that he inculturated the Christian faith into the Indian culture. It was at his time that the Church was named as the Our Lady of Assumption.

In 1728 the Church was several times visited by thieves and plundered the village. It is said that a thief, stealing the image of Our Lady and was about to carry it away, when all on a sudden, he became blind. Around 1748 the old Church of K.N.P. was completely burnt down by some evil forces against the Christian faith, yet the statue of Our Lady remained unstained and was saved. Though it was a time of severe famine, the Christians rebuilt it against the thought of their enemies and with divine providence. Fr. Lawrence de Almeyda in charge of Mannargudi or Mannarcoil, falling sick on his way to the Coast, died at K.N.P, on the first of February 1748 after receiving the last sacraments. He was known as Rajendra swami, and his tomb can be seen even today at K.N.P.

There was an interval of 82 years from 1756 to 1838. During this time there were no priests, sacraments, Eucharist.etc, yet people stood firm in their faith by their popular devotion to Our Lady, with the help of the local catechists. Then Fr. Alexander Martin, known as Visuvasanandarswami accompanied by Fr. Mousset M.E.P., was the first Jesuit to visit K.N.P. Both celebrated the feast of the Assumption in 1838. Fr. Alexander was firm in removing the discrimination on the basis of caste and getting settled in the beginning of the twentieth century. After him Fr. J. Maria Dass extended the Church and built the present one with much elegance and style. It has a beautiful sanctuary, altar and stands on twelve pillars signifying the twelve apostles.

Kamanayakkanpatti Our Lady of Assumption Church

As the beginning of the jubilee year (325) and an honor to Our Lady, the ROSARY GARDEN was built with leading of Rev.Fr. Arulambrose (2005-2010) and it is convenient for people to pray the rosary at all times. It is slowly gaining its lost importance. This parish is known all over for its significant and unique devotions to Our Lady called “Kumbidu Sevai”, which tells the emptiness of human before God. This has got very many cultural impacts among the people and still holds the faith of the people. This is the first place where the practice of Car procession was introduced by Fr. Beschi.

Now many people flock to this place of grace and also experience the hand of God in their prayers and give thanks to God the Almighty through Our Lady. Last year, this mission has celebrated 325th jubilee year, many are visiting and honoring Our Mother. People from all over the country come over here through out the year and worship Our Lady.

Coronavirus COVID -19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause disease in animals. Seven, including the new virus, have made the jump to humans, but most just cause cold-like symptoms.

Occurrence of Conona Virus

The source of the coronavirus is believed to be a "wet market" in Wuhan which sold both dead and live animals including fish and birds.

Such markets pose a heightened risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans because hygiene standards are difficult to maintain if live animals are being kept and butchered on site. Typically, they are also densely packed.

The animal source of the latest outbreak has not yet been identified, but the original host is thought to be bats. Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market but may have infected live chickens or other animals sold there.

Bats are host to a wide range of zoonotic viruses including Ebola, HIV and rabies.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

The Madonna of Vailankanni is the Mother of God. The Glory of the Blessed Mother is seen and experienced all over the world. Remember what she said at Cana, “Do whatever He tells you” and Her Son’s word she echoed at Fatima: “The time is fulfilled…repent and believe in the Gospel” and again the words: “Come to me all you that labor and are overburdened and I will give you rest” (Mt 11: 28). We the suffering who feel attracted by the perspective of “relief” which the Divine physician offers should respond with hope through Annai Vailankanni. Sometimes it is physical relief. More often it is spiritual healing too. As we have crossed the threshold of Silver Jubilee year, our hearts are filled with thanksgiving for all the showers of blessings through the intercession of Our Heavenly Mother.

Besant Nager Annai Velankanni Church Front View

In 1971, this Church was a substation of St Louis Church, Adyar.Fr PT Arulappa, the then Parish Priest, St Louis Church, Adyar and a great Missionary started Our Lady of Vailankanni Church under trying conditions.The Archbishop of Madras Mylapore, Most Rev Dr R Arulappa, erected it as a separate Parish in 1973. The imposing 97 feet belfry was declared open by the then Chief Minister Dr M Karunanidhi 27th August 1972.

On 15th August 1985 a bigger Church was blessed and consecrated by Archbishop Most Rev Dr R Arulappa. By the efforts of Rev Fr PJ Lawrence Raj, several extensions and renovations were made to this Shrine. A beautiful community hall, stalls, Museum and class room blocks were constructed. In May 2000, nearly 8 grounds were purchased and a beautiful stage was erected and dedicated to Jubilee 2000.

In 2001 a small Chapel for the blessed Sacrament was built. In 2002 a grotto depicting the miracles of Our Lady of Good Health was created. In 2003, Mother Mary’s Square and Reconciliation Chapel was constructed. From 2000 to 2003, 3 grounds were purchased in which the new Convent building stands. On 8th September 2005 this Church was decreed as a Shrine of the Archdiocese of Madras ‘ Mylapore by the Most Rev Dr AM Chinnappa SDB, Archbishop of Madras ‘ Mylapore.
