I've got the key to NYC

I took a little jaunt to New York City last weekend to visit some of my closest friends. NBD.

Oh, silly, you thought I meant "no big deal" with that abbrev, didn't you? Well, no. I meant "no bleeping discounts."

Precious money was spent, mostly on the following:

Gourmet pizzas.

Spinach artichoke pizzas.

Pretty beverages.

Cake -- with sparkles.

Ouch. For a while I worried I'd come home with nothing to show for my vacation but artistic greeting cards and a renewed need to work out.

Then Brooklyn came to my rescue. The storied flea market there is real, y'all, and it's so much fun to browse the crafts, art, clothes, furniture and food.

Mostly because you get to see things like this. Meow.

When I recovered from the glory that is this tri-kitty leotard I spied my take-home treasure: the perfect key charm, swiped from a table of antiques for just $5.

Like?

"Where did it come from?" I asked the sales duo.

"Sorry, there's no story," they said.

Just know it's old. It's authentic, which is more along the lines of my style than a decked-out (and $$$) Tiffany's number. I mean, that would be nice, but $$$.

My key came sans strand. So how do you think I should I style it?

Gold strand?

Leather strand?

Or something else?

Dress for Success needs plus-sized clothing, toiletries

I spent yesterday at the Dress for Success boutique on North Howard Avenue in Tampa to cover this story. Kim Washington, who works with Thirty-One Gifts (those personalized tote bags you see everywhere), got her team to collect hundreds of purses to donate to Dress for Success.

The mission of Dress for Success is to help disadvantaged women get free outfits and interview skills they need to land jobs. Women are referred through various agencies and make appointments with a personal shopper. They come in with their heads down and leave a little more confident.

It was the first time I'd ever been in the boutique. It's an old police substation that has been totally remodeled, with a cute waiting room in the front that has magazines and snacks. Around the corner are racks of suits and blouses and tops, pants and skirts. In a little room off to the side are shoes, purses and accessories.

The women each get two suits for interviews, plus toiletries like deodorant and hair dye. If they get a job, they get to come back and get some additional pieces to wear to work. So, if they're working in a medical center they can get scrubs, or if they're working at Wal-Mart, they can get khakis, and so on.

I met some great volunteers, and they pointed out the plus-sized rack. It was very depleted. They get plenty of small and average suits (hypothetically because people tend to expand out of them), and they're grateful for all of those, but they really need items for women size 20 and up. If you have plus-sized clothing you're willing to donate, Dress for Success would be a great choice. They also always need toiletries.

Which is best for those rainy Florida days - coat or umbrella?

There I was, first day of the new job, with my new-job-outfit on, and my new-job pen and notebook out, and what should happen?

The skies open up.

Total fail.

Luckily it was only a light sprinkle, but still enough rain to make me wish I'd remembered to grab an umbrella on my way out.

OR, to have a swanky yellow rain coat like this.

Isn't she gorgeous? And, unfortunately, way out of my budget. ModCloth is selling it (dubbed the "Rain or Shine Coat") for $189.99 on its website. Yikes.

But maybe there are some similar alternatives out there?

What do you guys think? Do you find yourself rocking a raincoat in the Florida heat, or just stick to unbrellas?

ModCloth says this baby is 100 percent cotton and only ratea a 2 out 5 on the "warmth scale," so maybe it'd be light enough.

And if you do go the raincoat route, where's the best place to fine affordable ones? If you have any tips, leave a message in the comments!

The Queen and Her Hats: A Retrospective

Queen Elizabeth II is grinning all over town this year, celebrating her Diamond Jubilee. For those who don't know, it's basically a massive party marking her 60th year in the throne. Folks across the commonwealth will celebrate the jubilee's so-called Central Weekend Saturday through Tuesday with a host of pageantry and picnics and concerts. It all sounds like a gas.

The Queen is likely to roll out some legendary headgear for the events, as she always does. To note the occasion, we thought we'd take a fashiony look back at Liz's most famous hats.

This hat not only employs a chic pastel color combination, it serves as a holster for emergency sushi chopsticks, or, if a kerfuffle should arise, a pointed weapon to stab royal naysayers in the jugular. She only looks nice.

Listen, you WILL be noticed when feathers burst from the central-most point of your cranium. She is a glorious ostrich who has just spied a hyena across the plains. Thankfully, her blazer provides natty camouflage. NOW RUN.

That is one tall chapeau. Come to think of it, she could be using that puppy to hide snacks. Just imagine the cheese on toast, potato crisps and Scotch eggs you could stash under there. Those official tours are long, you guys.

Help me solve my bra-lemma

Before I go further, let me just announce that you still have a few days left to check out Nordstrom's half-yearly sale for women and kids. Can't believe we haven't talked about this yet.

I was able to pop into Nords yesterday to check it out. (Full disclosure: my sister/ personal shopper works there) I left with a few great staples (this basic tee in blue and black, and this sporty chambray skirt), but I also left with a problem.

I fell in love with this orange open-back dress. Perfect for summer, perfect for early-fall Gator football games. Easy, breezy and bright.

But, ahem, I guess it'd be more accurate to say that I have two problems.

Please explain where a bra fits into this picture.

A regular or strapless, even in nude, wouldn't do -- not with the keyhole putting the strap right there on display. And the silky polyester doesn't exactly make it possible to go without... not without the potential for an indecent exposure arrest, that is.

Options:

- Those chicken-cutlet sticky-cups everyone wore to prom.

- Those petal pasties

- Duct tape

All I remember about the chicken-cutlets is that they slid off everybody on the dance floor. So, you know, there's that.

The petal stickers would cover the crucial elements, but don't seem like they'd offer nearly enough support that this flimsy fabric warrants.

As for the duct tape, the serious suggestion of a friend, ouch.

A quick Google search comes up with variations of those, with some of the adhesive cups running upwards of $70, making the duct tape option look pretty attractive.

But seriously, how would you wear this? Help!

Mark Albright recalls 25 years of Tampa Bay shopping

You guys have to read this story from Tampa Bay Times' retail reporting legend Mark Albright, who retires this week after a 38-year career, 25 spent covering retail. He has watched stores come, go and change, creating the rich Tampa Bay shopping landscape we all know (and frequent) today. Mark writes:

A parade of department stores disappeared: Maas Brothers, JByron, Burdines, Robinson's, Maison Blanche, Gayfer's, Ivey's, Montgomery Ward and Jacobson's. They were replaced by midmarket Kohl's, Dillard's, Macy's and high-end newcomers Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. That, plus the arrival of Gucci and Louis Vuitton, shut up the "we're not worthy" naysayers convinced Tampa Bay was some fashion backwater. Saks left Denver and San Diego but has been in Tampa for 14 years.

My Outfit Monday: Same clothes, new setting

Happy Memorial Day!

If you're not working, I hope you're having a lovely holiday off. If you are working, well, we feel your pain.

I know everyone probably has plans today, so I'll keep this one short. Take a look at my outfit:

Pretty basic, huh? What can I say - I wasn't too inspired when I woke up.

I stuck with black jeans ($15 from Forever 21), a white blouse with ruffles (I think it was like $6 from Revolve Clothing Exchange in St. Pete a couple years ago) and no shoes--yet.

I kept the accessories to a minimum as well.

I got the necklace AGES ago from a store called Maurices up north. (Anybody know if they have them down here?).

And the beaded black bracelet cost 50 cents in a thrift store bin.

I was in a hat kind of mood, but didn't have anything that was just right. So, using a technique my mom taught me when I was little, I wrapped my hair in black fabric.

I apologize if the photos seem a little fuzzy. I was solo this morning and had to use my laptop's camera to get the job done.

I also was trying to get used to new surroundings. I moved a couple days ago (this Deal Diva is a homeowner now!) and the house came with a bigger and better photo studio---er, porch, I mean.

New TJ Maxx opens in St. Petersburg

Soooooooooooooo ... guess where I was this morning? St. Pete's newest shopping hotspot.

Remember the old Circuit City near Tyrone Quare Mall that closed some time ago? Well, it's no longer vacant. In its place is a new, shiny TJ Maxx!!!

Today is the grand opening.

Naturally, we Deal Divas had to check it out. Anything for our readers, right?

I got there before 9 and the parking lot was PACKED. I took a deep breath, tightened my grip on my purse and headed in.

The first thing you need to know about this store is that it's CLEAN. Hallelujah, right.

Don't know how long it'll stay that way with the amount of people in there this morning, but really, this is TJ Maxx.

You know what you're getting into when you go.

But still, this one is nice you guys. Still has that "new store" smell.

The finishes seem to be an upgrade too, evidenced by sleeker signage and a bigger emphasis on the red and white theme.

Workers, many who dressed up for the occassion, tell me its actually a prototype of what all new future stores will look like.

Hands down, the biggest difference you'll likely notice between this and other stores is the revamped dressing rooms.

The floors are a wood (or at least a wood-looking laminate), there's a soft yellow wallpaper and there's cushioned ottomans rather than a hard bench. Outside the dressing room, there's a handy section dedicated to parking your cart.

Of course, there's plenty of not-so-subtle marketing too, like this sign mounted on the inside of every dressing room door. A little enabling never hurt anyone, right?

The only downsides?

Since this is a new store, there were no clearance sections yet (and you KNOW how much we Deal Divas love us some clearance racks).

Also, I was surprised that for the size of the store, there weren't MORE dressing rooms. (I counted nine on the Ladies' side).

But in this case, quality seemed to make up for quantity. These dressing rooms actually have working locks! That might sound crazy, but just a couple weeks ago I was at a different TJ MAXX and, no lie, at least half of the doors in the dressing rooms had "door broken" signs taped to them. Classy.

So if you've got some time to kill today, or this weekend, head over to check out the store, which is tucked in the back of the Crossroads Shopping center off 22nd Avenue N, between Tyrone Boulevard and 66th Street N.

The crowds might be intense, but if nothing else, they might still have some free totes, like this one I snagged on my way out:

Every time I go nightclubbing, it’s the same story. I’m either stuffing my credit card, ID, cash, lip gloss or other small necessities into my male friends’ pockets.

Or, more likely, stuffing them into my bra.

After all, who wants to be bogged down on the dance floor with a bulky purse that slaps all the potential male suitors away?

That’s why a handy product that just hit the market makes me shout inside my head, “Why didn’t I think of that?!?”

Introducing: The JoeyBra.

The bra – which is sized small, medium or large – has a kangaroo-like pouch sewn into the band where the wearer can stash items as large as a cell phone.

It’s cute. It’s functional. What's not to love, right?

Sure, friends would still tease me about feeling up my own goodies and strangers might still openly gawk or sneak confused looks as I reach inside my unmentionables.

For the record, I always attempt to be discreet and turn away to pull money or credit cards out before I know I’ll need them. But sometimes things just get lost in there.

Hopefully, the JoeyBra’s pouch would keep everything contained in one space, making the reaching motion much less noticeable and reducing awkward conversations with cashiers, bouncers and TSA officials (true story: a well-meaning agent once lectured me about the dangers of letting dirty money touch my skin) to nearly zilch.

Plus, it would give me peace of mind knowing that my valuables are cozily nestled in a safe place.

Still, I'm debating whether it's a good investment. The creators vow that the underarm pocket is spacious, yet unnoticeable. I'm not so sure I'm convinced.

Is it pathetic that I purposely walk my dog along a route that leads me past the Hyde Park Anthropologie store -- just so I can salivate in the window? I always walk away wanting to cry a little, knowing there's really no reason for me to go inside. Resigning to the sad truth that I'll never really be able to justify buying, oh I don't know, maybe this tank top that for some reason is $50...

Until...

Happy birthday to me! I guess I must've signed up for a mailing list or something at some point, because on May 13, the folks at the boho-clothing heaven sent me a lovely card with an offer for 15 percent off anything in the store through the end of May.

What perfect timing: the store is now having its semi-annual clearance sale! Let's have a look.

This subtly polka-dotted number is $50, but it WAS $188. Take 15 percent off and that's $42.50. Worth it?

Maybe accessories would be a better buy.

I want to wear this scarf every day, with every outfit. On sale for $30, reduced from $48, and down to $25.50 with my B-day discount. Okay, seriously I need this.

Haters gon' hate, but I think these shoes are awesome. I'm drawn to anything Navajo-inspired, and I love the colors. They're on sale from $78 to $48, and $40.80 with my discount.

Soo, now I've theoretically spent $108. Happy birthday to me?

The Divas guide to blazering through RNC

Saturday marked the 100-day countdown for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and officials are working really hard to nail down plans for security, transportation, construction and, oh yeah, that SWELTERING, SUFFOCATING August heat.

I'll leave logistics to the electeds and the Secret Service. But Divas, we need to talk about those feels-like-it's-100-degrees-out-here-why-God-why temperatures. It's important. You see, RNC is synonymous with blazertime, and I am both attending the event (working journalist, y'all) and obsessed with blazers.

I'm definitely not the only one.

That's Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain at the 2008 RNC in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Remember? Yes? Good, I was worried.

Democrats also love blazers, of course, but they're not coming to Tampa.

We, THE PEOPLE, must fight for our right to fight heat-related illnesses. We must secure lightweight options to counter the threat of our oppressor, Mother Nature. And unlike some burned by extravagant spending on campaign clothes, haircuts and jewelry, we won't be embarrassed by the receipts of our transactions.

LET'S VET THE CANDIDATES.

Seersucker, you're the obvious choice. Light, airy and playful, you're the fabric we welcome when it's hot as Hades.

And you look really pretty here in blue stripes on top of a pink pant at Banana Republic. For $130, though, I'd definitely have to wait to buy you until a Wednesday, when I can get 40 percent off one full-priced item.

Linen blend, you were second in my head, I swear it.

Forever 21 offers you for $19.80. Reviews are mixed, but you might just be worth the plunge anyway. Back-up blazer?

Ye jackets of three-quarter and shorter sleeves, thank goodness for you. You're fun, bright and downright patriotic in some variations.

Especially this buttonless number from Zappos, $69.99.

Forever 21, $29.80. We know it's going to be hot, and that we're about to sound like your mom, but you should wear a PC shirt under this for RNC.

I salute you, bright green blazer. What you lack in form you make up for in eye-popping color. I'm concerned by one thing on your record, though, which is that you are 100 percent rayon and thus not suitable for dealing with sweat. My Outfit Monday: Fun Midwest finds

I popped up to Ohio recently for a quick visit. I'm originally from the Cleveland area, (Lorain County, for Ohio nerds), and most of my family is still there. This visit was not about shopping or coming back with lots of great finds. It was about seeing loved ones and spending as much time with them as possible.

Naturally, since I wasn't trying, I came back with lots of great finds! Isn't that always the way?

Find 1: SPARKLY GOLD JACKET.

Feast your eyes on this baby. While I was visiting my grandparents, I noticed a sleepy little garage sale across the street. Up north, garage sales go all day. It's not like Florida where you have to start at 5 a.m. and shut down by noon to avoid sun blisters and heat exhaustion.

I wandered over with a few bucks in my pocket. There were a lot of ceramic bunnies and old board games. Then, I saw this gold glittering thing straight up out of the 1980s, shoulder pads and all. It was $1. A DOLLAR. I had to have it.

I wore it with a Target tank and Old Navy flare jeans, hemmed with love by the nice lady at Hana's Tailor-Made in Tyrone Mall. You can barely see my shoes (I am so, so, so short), but they are nude pumps by Gianni Bini. Bag is Betsey Johnson, necklace is Forever 21, cup is from a Starbucks in Seoul, South Korea (another vacation find!).

Find 2: MASSIVE ART.

I went down to snoop in my grandpa's basement, which is a wonderland of old signs and treadmills and lamps and paintings and tools. Tucked away in a dusty corner was a huge framed print by pinup artist Edward Runci. I immediately fell in love.

"TAKE IT!" Grandpa said. He loves to give us stuff, like most grandparents. He said it belonged to his mother, and all my aunts and uncles remembered it hanging up in her house back in the day. Apparently she bought it at Sears. Another Deal Diva in the lineage!

Here I am at the UPS store with my new art, trying to figure out how to get it back to Florida.

You'll noticed the repeat bag and necklace from above. I tend to get hooked on certain items. My shoes are new favorites from Old Navy, scored at 40 percent off. The black top is Forever 21, and jeans are New York and Company. (They're supposed to be "ankle length" on regular-sized people. Sigh.)

And yes, my hair is pink in parts. Well, it was. I took a bucket list gamble on the Lauren Conrad color we chatted about, but it has already mostly faded after a few weeks. I loved it at first, but now it just looks like a Care Bear spit on me. My hair, I guess, will not hold any color other than EXTREME YELLOW. Sad.

I spent my life savings to get that painting home. Good thing the gold jacket was only $1.

Goodwill's Wedding Gala scheduled for June, hundreds of new dresses starting at $100

Here's the most important save-the-date for all you summer brides out there.

Goodwill’s Wedding Gala, a major annual wedding gown sale, is scheduled for June 9 in Brandon and June 16 in Spring Hill. The two Goodwill stores will offer more than 400 brand new wedding gowns in sizes from 2 to 26 with prices starting at $100. We're not talking poof sleeves and bad appliques. We're talking fresh off the design line. Proceeds benefit Goodwill's programs for people with disabilities.

The stock of dresses will be split between the two stores, about 200 gowns at each event. Brands include Priscilla of Boston, House of Wu and Melissa Sweet. These dresses were donated by Athena’s Bridal, CC’s Boutique, Diana’s Bridal, Olga’s Bridal Boutique and Priscilla of Boston. Some of the original price tags go up to $4,350, people. You heard right. We should warn you, the blushing brides are friendly and orderly, but they tend to camp out and line up for this event. Make sure not to lollygag if you want to get a good spot in line. Goodwill suggests campers bring lawn chairs so your bridal bums are comfy. Once you get inside, there will be drinks and snacks donated by Publix, music, dressing room areas, full-length mirrors and pedestals. Bonus Deal Diva advice? Wear your wedding shoes if you have them (or pick up a pair at the sale!), plus the proper undergarments and something you can slip in and out of easily. You don't want to be unbolting your favorite boned corset and leather pants while some chick in a sundress is beating you to your dream gown. Just saying.

Doors open at 6 a.m. June 9 at the Goodwill Superstore at 1106 E. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon, and at 6 a.m. June 16 at the Goodwill Superstore at 4750 Commercial Way in Spring Hill. If you don't find something at the first sale, you can always try the second.

I wear wedges a lot. Like, a lot of lot. Like, so much that I get teased for it.

But I can't help it. Those of you ladies out there -- especially my fellow vertically challenged sistas -- know the comfort a wedge can offer. No lie. It's all the benefits of a high heel without the sometimes-pain that comes along with those.

But, everything has its time right?

Which is why when I slipped on a pair of my go-to wedges earlier this week, I just KNEW.

The grip was off, the heel long chipped and grinded down to something totally unrecognizable from its former self. Discolored. Not even worth the cobbler's time.

They were done. Finished. At the end of their life.

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I should have taken a picture, but they're THAT embarrassing.

There must be something in the water. First Deal Diva Katie's jellies, now my wedges...be careful out there people. The grim reaper of footwear is on the prowl!

So, I'm in the market for some replacements, and I'm hoping you guys will help.

These, on sale for $24 at Target, seem nice and summery.

Kohl's has these for $39.99. Would probably look good with a casual dress...

Forever 21 expands inside Westfield Countryside

I remember when Forever 21 opened inside Westfield Countryside mall in 2000. It was SWARMING with people who had never before seen this level of cheap-o fashion in such great supply. I still remember seeing a mean girl from my high school (who shall remain unnamed) barking at her mom to grab just about everything in the store.

It seemed massive and exciting back then, but years have passed and that Forever 21 has paled in comparison to bigger versions, including the more expansive sophisticated Forever XXI (Roman numerals, so you know it's good) at International Plaza.

It won't be a kid sister store much longer. If you walk through Westfield Countryside upstairs between the food court and JC Penney, you'll notice a HUGE section of stores walled off, destined to become Forever 21's new home. It even wraps around the corner where the old yogurt shop used to be.

A store clerk told me they're scheduled to open in the new location on June 30, and things will be on sale leading up to the switcheroo. I was mostly interested to know if the chandeliers and store fixtures were included since I'm getting ready to move into a new house, but she wasn't sure. If you see one of those big, twisty lamps on sale, totally let me know.

Another reason to love Target: the new "Shops"

Target has found a way to make us love it even more. I'm talking about "The Shops at Target," a campaign featuring partnership collections with smaller specialty stores around the country. Rolled out last month, the Shops now include a handful of retailers from New York to San Francisco.

One of the recently announced partners is Kirna Zabête, a clothing boutique featuring the likes of Lanvin, Thakoon, and Proenza Schouler. Then there's the hip Curiosity Shop in San Francisco, selling cool home and office wares that would make awesome gifts. There's even something for the pups in our lives at Polka Dog Bakery, which has Peggy and me both drooling over its colorful bowls, leashes and plastic go-fetch sticks.

Seriously, I may spend my entire day browsing through this stuff.

My favorite, for now, might be the Miami-based Webster shop at Target. Please, just see for yourself:

Hello, high-low!

I can't get high-low skirts off the brain after catching a glimpse of one at the mall last weekend.

(Unfamiliar? You may know them better as mullet skirts, a look pioneering Deal Diva Stephanie introduced unto us last year.)

The one I liked resembled this effortless, slightly Boho skirt from dELiAs.

See? Flirty, accessible, breezy. And it makes me think about bell curves, and other mathematical things I long abandoned for word devotion. What could be so wrong?

Arden B., $79. I heart this sweet one-shoulder dress, bearing many trends in a single look. Color-blocking: HOT RIGHT NOW. And it seems like a flattering, flowy fit for girls with curves and without 'em. But, $$$.

I'm admiring the tumbling chiffon raked in by a thin belt. But $59.99? Yeah, I just checked, and none of my friends are getting married this summer. There will be no attempts to justify excessive purchases today. Not here, not now. Next.

Dillards, $29.40. I loved so much about this dress -- the stripes, waist tie, simplicity, etc. -- until the critical high-low part, stained with Kool-Aid, I guess. Why did it have to be this way?

Target, $24.99. I see a chunky leather waistbelt to offset the ruffles. Strappy sandals. A breezy lightwash denim jacket, sunglasses and a picnic basket for the beach. With a baguette.

We could try it with this cheerful tangerine take from Forever 21 ($22.80). (And think of the much-needed tanning opportunities!)

Forever 21, $19.80. This curve is as modest as it gets -- perfect for ladies who just want to nibble at the trend without ringing alarms. I would add a chunky necklace.

These dresses are everywhere, folks. Has anyone else taken a dip? And don't be shy if you don't like the business-in-front, party-in-back fad.

Trash becomes teen's prom night treasure

Prom checklist: Dinner. The limo. The corsage. The makeup. And, of course, the perfect dress.

With prom just around the corner here and elsewhere, teens and their parents are preparing to dish out some serious cash making sure the night they spend dancing away with longtime friends, possibly for the last time, is an unforgettable one.

Cue one ingenious teen from Michigan, who not only ensured the night was memorable, but no doubt also cut down on expenses.

Her secret weapon? Diane McNease created her prom dress out of 18,000 Starburst candy wrappers.

Gives a new meaning to the phrase "eye candy"!

The young DIY Diva, who says the project took nearly two years to complete, says friends helped her eat the candies and donated wrappers to her cause.

Homemade prom dresses and even those made of Starburst wrappers, media reports show, are nothing new. But Diane's work has been compared to the runway fashions of Italian designer Ottavio "Tai" Missoni. More photos of the dress are here.

No word on the actual cost of the dress and matching headband and purse, but let's hope the project didn't instead result in higher dental bills for Diane and her friends.

My Outfit Monday: Am I on the air?

The chance of doing a TV interview today made me step up my fashion plan this morning. Unfortunately, it didn't work out due to scheduling conflicts.

On the bright side, it makes for a very prepared My Outfit Monday dispatch. So, uh, live from the Times' Tallahassee bureau, it's me!

To answer your first question, no, I am not wearing white tights. Why yes, that question did come from my own mother last night. Moving on.

I snagged the year-old tweed skirt from Banana Republic's Mad Men collection when it went on sale. I love the retro look and the curvy fit.

The fuschia shirt is a gift from a couple Christmases ago, and it comes from Express. A wise woman (OK, Deal Diva Stephanie) once advised me to wear jewel tones when on camera, advice I heeded to nice results for a December interview but didn't need today. I love the puffy, silk sleeves.

The multi-strand necklace is where things get redundant. Not only did it come from Banana Republic, but it was also a Christmas gift. I noticed it on sale this weekend as I shopped for ma mere.

I saved the best part for last: my new suede heels. BAM, they're high -- unlike the price I paid for them (wordplay high-five!).

These were $19.99.

Remember when Deal Diva Kim told us about Beyond the Rack, the site that distributes daily emails about soon-to-expire designer deals? I've been getting the alerts ever since but didn't open one until I realized my dire need for new heels. The brand is Bucco Capensis -- heard of it? With built-in platforms, they are as painful as they look.

Is anyone out there a fan of Beyond the Rack? I love the shoes but not the $10 shipping fee (though it obviously wasn't a deal-breaker).

Still need a gift for mom?

It's impossible for me to forget Mother's Day. That's because it usually falls on or around my birthday, May 13. Every year Mom gets a better gift than I could ever buy: ME!

But seriously, because the date seldom sneaks up on me, I usually get crafty and make my mom her gift. Last year I painted her a vase at Color Me Mine in Hyde Park. The year before, I went overboard decoupaging a 12-by-16-inch framed photo of the two of us.

This year was different. Out of nowhere, it was May. Then it was May 5. Then, OMG, the week of?!? What to get Mom? (See said mother to left, looking naturally gorgeous as usual.)

Luckily, I found the perfect gift for her at the mall the other day (I won't tell you what it is, in case she's reading.) But my frenzy forced me out of my home-made comfort zone, opening a new world of Mother's Day sales. A perfect segue into Memorial Day sales, just when we'd finally gotten over the buyer's remorse of New Year's sales.

Vogue no longer putting too young or unhealthy models in its magazines

Here's some good news.

Vogue says it will no longer use too-skinny or underage models in its magazine. The change -- who knows why it took so long to come p with such an obvious policy? -- is to start with next month's issue.

Anna Wintour, editor in chief of American Vogue, told Showbiz Tonight this the other day: "We're just very concious that we do not want to put anyone in the magazine that might have some sort of eating disorder, so we're really doing our best to be careful."

Word is that casting directors will even be asked to start checking IDs at things like photo shoots and fashion shows, according to the Associated Press.

Hair pioneer Vidal Sassoon dead at 84

Vidal Sassoon has died at 84. So sad. My mom used his shampoos in the 80s, and they're one of the first things I remember seeing as a kid in the bathtub.

He is largely responsible for the way many women wear their hair today. Thanks, Vidal.

Deal Diva Review: Shellac and gel manicures

When my hands were on the gym floor in push-up position, my friend said, “Wow, your nails look great.” I cackled knowingly inside. I had a hard-living beauty secret.

It had been almost a month since I’d had a manicure, yet my nails looked pristine, at least to a fuzzy, far-off eye. This manicure was serious. It was legit. I had sexy Wolverine adamantium nails. And they were mine!

I’m a recovering acrylic nail addict. I wore the fakies for 8 years starting in high school. They were long and gaudy and over the top. I would sit for an hour while a nail tech drilled my real nail down to the thickness of rice paper, built fake ones on top then topped them with polish that took forever to dry. Within two weeks they were frequently broken, but my nails looked so bad underneath that I went back again. It was a money suck, a time suck, a sophistication suck.

Giving it up was liberating. I was able to enjoy manicures without drills again. Turns out, the nail tech does nice things like massage your hands and wrap them in heated towels. The glory! But within days, the polish would chip and peel. The money and time felt wasted.

When I heard gel nails were getting popular, I was cautiously optimistic. Shellac, or gel manicures, were supposed to last up to two weeks in perfect condition, and women everywhere were running to salons to get them. I was wary of going back to something that might hurt my nails again, but it seemed worth a try.

It was. I’ve been getting gel manicures at my favorite nail salon, New York Nails in downtown St. Petersburg, for a couple months now. I swear it’s the most relaxing place in the city. It’s not ornate or upscale, but it's calm with soft, twinkling music, and after your manicure the techs give you a back rub. No, really. A back rub.

But back to the Shellac. New York Nails has dozens of colors from CND’s Shellac line, the brand that set off the frenzy, plus OPI’s Gelcolor. A plain gel manicure is $30, and you can add $5 for French.

The nail tech trims your nails, then files them, then pushes back your cuticles, moisturizes your hands and does the hot towel drape. Ahhh. Then she starts to layer a gel base, several coats of color and a gel topcoat. Between each step, you stick your hands under a UV lamp to harden the materials. When you’re done, the nails are immediately dry. No performing the celebrated Get the Keys Out and Wreck Your Polish Shuffle.

Voila!

My French manicure held up like nothing I’d ever experienced. Since the color was so light, you couldn’t see the nail growth unless you were awkwardly close. I did dishes, typed, picked up dog poop. I even participated in a 5K race and obstacle course in which I scaled rope walls and swam through mud. See? Here are my shoes after, and you can see the nails in the corner.

I didn’t have a single nail break and they cleaned right up. Here they are after a month. A month!

The removal process was a little Space Age. She dipped cotton swabs in nail polish remover, put them on my nails and wrapped each finger in tin foil. I looked like ET after a Pillsbury biscuit bake-off.

After a few minutes, she was able to scrape away the polish and my nails below were in good shape.

My next mani at New York Nails was slightly less successful. I opted for OPI’s teal shade, and it just seemed to keep sucking up the topcoat. The nail tech wasn’t thrilled with it either, but she gave me my back rub and I became mellowed into happy submission.

It was thicker than the French, and it betrayed growth more easily because of the dark color. Two weeks and I was ready for a replacement set, hardcore.

Gross. You know I love you guys since I'm showing you this hot mess.

I decided to try Tiffany Nail & Spa inside Westshore Plaza. It was busy at lunchtime, and loud and small. The nail tech didn’t employ the gentle cotton swab technique. She just soaked my fingers in a big bowl of nail polish remover and then scraped at it with her own fingers until it came off. She even pulled out the dreaded drill for the last stubborn bits. I have to say, this wasn’t the most pleasant thing in the world.

The rest of the manicure, though, was speedy and well-done. I was gone in just over a half hour. And, it was cheaper at $25 for solid pink CND polish.

I loved the result. I noticed no one in the shop getting the old-school acrylics. They do half and half now, my tech said, in terms of business.

If you do opt for shellac, be aware that your hands must sit under a UV lamp in spurts that can total up to 10 minutes. Some doctors have raised concerns about this, comparing it to tanning beds or sun exposure. The nail companies say it’s low-risk, but of course, they have an interest. The FDA has worked to ban fishy chemicals in nail polish, but if you have a bad feeling about a product or can't get a straight answer about what's in it, never be afraid to leave a nail shop.

After reading up, I think I’m going to start wearing waterproof sunscreen on my hands before I go, like many doctors suggest. I don’t want a disease or premature hand wrinkles. Not even for awesome Wolverine nails.

UPDATE: My friend wise Amanda informs me that you can buy all the Shellac products on Amazon.com, including the UV lamps. It'll set you back quite a few bucks at the outset, but it might pay off in the long run if you're interested in doing your own gel manicures at home. Check out the products here.

Find of the week: Charming Charlie sparkly lanyard!

Have you guys been into Charming Charlie at Westshore Plaza yet? I went into the sprawling accessories wonderland for the first time last week and was immediately overwhelmed. There is SO. MUCH. TO. SEE. All the baubles, shoes and bags are categorized by color, displayed on walls and dressers and racks and hangers. Prices are pretty low, nothing marked much over $30 based on my quick scan.

Now, I am very self-aware when it comes to these situations. I knew I would leave with at least one item I didn't need. I only had to choose.

I considered a pink cluster necklace, some long blue beads, some fuscia drop earrings, even a pair of leggings. But when I turned a corner by the register I didn't care about any of that. I knew what really I wanted.

SPARKLY LANYARD. $15.

See, every day I wear this ID badge to work both to get into the office and to alert people that I will be asking a variety of annoying questions and possibly publishing their answers. My last lanyard was a green St. Petersburg Times number, which was all good until we changed our name this year. It was nostalgic, but also inaccurate. It had to go.

Charming Charlie's selections included hot pink and green and white, but I figured black sparkles were just interesting enough while still being a little subtle for work, and it would hide reporting grit and grime pretty well. Here's the full selection of lanyards.

We all know the bones of a good bargain equals cost to usage ratio. So $15 divided by at least five days a week until then end of time? I think I broke the Cost Per Use Sound Barrier.

Broken-hearted over broken jellies

Tragedy struck this Sunday right before brunch. One of my trusty, trademark, nostalgic, flat-out-adorable-I-don't-care-what-anyone-else-says jelly flats ripped at the widest part of my right foot.

Oh, I wore them anyway, like a good pauper without options, planning to use the "WHAT?! I didn't even notice" routine if called out for tear. (I ended up using Plan B: calling yourself out right away, thereby evoking sympathy before judgment). I know that routine isn't sustainable, so what should I do? Is it time to finally say goodbye to childhood fashion?

Bsh, no. Must. Have. Jellies. Here are some options.

I got really excited when I spotted these sparkly, bright jellies on Pinterest. Turns out they're for toddlers. Moms, you can get these at The Children's Place for $8.

Ah, more like it! I love these grown-up, chic, poppy jelly flats from KG by Kurt Geiger -- on sale for $21.81. Unlike my worn-out grey flats, they wouldn't go with everything. But peeps best watch out when they do.

Same goes for this gladiator-jelly hybrid. BONUS: DSW claims "each color has a delicious, different scent." For $15 it might be worth seeing what happens, no?

These look pretty close to my originals but have the sparkles. They also cost twice to three times as much on Amazon.

These strike me as the Crocs of jellies. I can't figure out where you get them, and that's probably for the best. Discuss!

I'm trying to buy a house right now, so I'm especially intrigued by Angela's suggestion to use Polyvore as a home decor tool. Take it away, Ang! -- DD Stephanie

I can’t believe I am just discovering the glory of Polyvore. Polyvore is a fashion paradise for those who are stylists to the most important customer: themselves. You can create style boards for any theme or mood you can imagine, then grace your Pinterest or Facebook with them.

The site includes pre-installed clothing, accessories, makeup, shoes and bags, and magazine and newsprint patterns to create your board. You also have the option of “Clipping” items from your favorite online stores into your account. From there you can create your dream outfit, or let your friends know what you will be wearing to the movies this weekend.

Apparently, this gem has been around for three years now, but is becoming more relevant now that blogging has really taken off. It isn’t just for clothing; you can create boards with furniture to design a future room. The options are endless.

The site has numerous contests which offer themes for creating boards. I get so excited browsing through other users' boards and envisioning exactly what I will pair on my board. The site allows you to follow and like other members just like Pinterest. You can browse through popular boards and recommend items for your boards. How simple or intricate you want your board to be is up to you.

The site is insanely organized. If you know you want a coral themed outfit, just click on the coral color block and you will see everything Polyvore has in that shade. When you find the coral dress you just can’t live without for your board, you can find out the price and store that sells it, so pretty much you get styling and online shopping in one spot. You can also search by key words or brands if you know exactly what you are looking for.

I have spent hours on this site trying to create the perfect boards to send to Facebook and Pinterest. There are contests to enter, board templates to follow and inspiration items to help get your creative juices flowing. So, if you have time to indulge in one more online addiction, I suggest checking out Polyvore.

My Outfit Monday: Old Faithful

So, I admit I kind of freaked when I was told that my first Deal Diva post would also double as my "My Outfit Monday" debut.

That being said, I decided to abide by the journalistic principle "KISS" (keep it simple, stupid) and stick with an old reliable.

And I do mean "old."

My top is a leftover from my college days of yore. I can't remember where I got it, but I'm guessing JCPenney.

I paired it with white capris. (Does that old-fashioned rule about not wearing white before Memorial Day really apply in sunny Florida? Eh, the holiday is close enough, I say). To battle the office chill, I threw on a lightweight black sweater, a thrift store purchase that I've also had for years.

I'm one of those self-described "unfortunate soles" wtih narrow feet, so I swear by my Mary Janes, which allow me to wear a heel but have a strap to keep me from literally walking right out of my shoes. I scored these for about $20 or $30 at Kohl's a few years back.

For color, I added a Payless watch with a pink face. I also decided to finally pull out a big pink New York & Company bag that's been hanging on my closet door since I purchased it circa 2010 during a half-off sale. The size makes it great for stashing a notebook, papers and, of course, snacks.

Our more astute readers (I'm looking at you (@KMT9) may have noticed a fresh lineup in our cartoon banner. That's right -- Deal Diva Emily, our beloved friend, left for a glam job in public relations at Bayfront Medical Center, leaving an opening in the Deal Diva lineup. We added one. And while we were at it, we got a little carried away and added two new Divas! We're hoping to bring you even more academic-level discussions than you already enjoy about hiding your credit card in your bra and getting your bangs to stay straight.

I've spent the morning trying (and failing) to mentally picture what's in my closet. I need something red, like, now.

Tomorrow, I'll be serving as a guest judge at the American Heart Association's Go Red Luncheon at the Al La Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa. I'll be judging the best dressed people in the house alongside Ronda Parag, editor of Tampa Bay Metro Magazine, and Bobbie Kingsbury, a local fashion maven who lost her mother to heart disease. I wrote a story about her last year.

At the luncheon, folks can stop by the best dressed booth, get their photo taken, enter the contest and be subjected to our judging (mwhahahaha). The winner will be crowned Go Red Fashionista and get a red Nine West bag.

St. Pete shop holding sale on vintage Coach purses

You know we Deal Divas are suckers for Coach, even if it takes a little encouragement, prodding and a killer sale to get us to part with the cash needed to pay for one.

I consider this next announcement the best of both worlds.

Misred Outfitters, a hip little vintage shop inthe famed 600 Block of Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete, is launching a collection of vintage Coach purses.

The sale begins TOMORROW, and you'd better run over -- there's no word on how many they actually have.

(I want dibs on the chocolate brown one on the top right, or the satchel on the bottom left. Love.)

The store says prices will range from $48 - $89. (Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less than the re-launched "classic" purses Coach is currently selling.)

Holy shorts!

I wore a pair of pants yesterday and felt the sun cackling at me as I walked out the door, immediately dripping sweat. I know we just hit May, but if you live in Florida, clearly summer has begun.

The problem? I find it hard to not look like I'm headed to the beach when wearing a pair of shorts. Even the most sturdy ones seem to scream for flip flops and a Frisbee game. So I've been looking around for some more dressy options.

That brings me to the crochet trend.

I know these are not exactly a new concept. We've been seeing people in crocheted shorts since at least last summer. But I haven't been able to bring myself to try them.

Even with serious wedges and a dressy shirt, like this Zara ensemble, they still give me a slight pajama-vibe.

But maybe I'm being too harsh. Have any of you bowed to the holy shorts?

My Outfit Monday: Footwear for your next existential crisis

I was home one day last week with a pretty bad migraine. About 7 p.m. the gnashing of teeth eased, and my head started to clear. Things were looking up! I made dinner and flipped through the On Demand shows to find something happy-go-lucky and quiet to watch. I settled on a short documentary on HBO called God is the Bigger Elvis. It's about nuns, in particular, one nun who left a flourishing career as a Hollywood actress to join a monastery. How delightful that would be!

AHHHHHHHH.

I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say that as the film credits rolled, I sobbed alone on my couch, shoveling pasta into my maw, plummeting into a full-tilt existential crisis. Thanks to HBO's compelling storytelling, life had no meaning. Even nuns don't know what they're doing. How was I supposed to know? I was destined to fail. Fail, fail, fail. I shoveled more pasta.

What followed was three days of tortured navel-gazing, after which I arrived at no applicable results or solutions. So Sunday, rather than actively deal with salient questions about our existence on this blue orb, I did what any of us would do.

I bought a new pair of shoes.

They're Mossimo's Perri espadrille from Target, of course, $29.99. I wanted a new pair of black summer wedges, and I liked these because they contain the foot pretty well. My feet run a tad wide, and spilling over the sides of shoes makes me feel like a pelican.

My shirt is also from Target. It is my favorite shirt because it's essentially a black tent. I already wore it far too much before the existential crisis. Now, you'll probably never see me in anything else again. My skirt is from New York & Company. Accessories are trusty Forever 21, including this color-blocked beaded bracelet for $6.80. The sparkle distracts from our innate and inborn suffering, no?

I'd show you a close-up of the shoes, but honestly, I should have dealt with my existential crisis by getting a pedicure. Here is a nice, neat product shot instead.

Now you all go home and watch that documentary, then report back with your shoe purchase.

Free People opens Friday in International Plaza

Fringe, denim and mesh-loving chicks rejoice! Free People opens Friday in International Plaza in Tampa. It's the first store for the Urban Outfitters-owned chain to open in Florida.

The opening will include live music, raffles and giveaways, plus snacks and drinks from local restaurants. The Rose and Zeb Duo will do a live acousinc set from 3 to 6 p.m. And if you spend more than $250 at the grand opening (then you probably don't read Deal Divas, but) you'll be entered to win a gift basket from Lush, Origins or Sweet Harvest Farms. Every now and then, I get the urge to have pink hair. The more sensible angel on my shoulder dressed like a bank president always talks me out of it, with reasons ranging from, "It would clash with certain outfits," to, "People would take you even less seriously than they do now, if that's possible." And then I see people who have tried and failed. Pink done bad can look wishy-washy and pale and sad. You have to commit to it or not do it at all, kind of like super short hair.

But lately, the Pink Hair Bug is IN THE AIR. I went to a new doctor this afternoon, and she was rocking cute little pink streaks in her hair. A doctor! Someone who tortured through years of medical school! And then I got back to work and saw that reality starlet Lauren Conrad dyed the ends of her ponytail hot pink for a stop on her book tour this week. She tweeted a picture of it and then blogged about it the next day.

I LOVE it (not to mention her winged eyeliner). I think it's just right. Bold enough to look intentional, but not so all-over that it's shocking. Man. Now I'm really high on the idea of pink. Maybe when I'm through growing out my pixie cut I'll revisit it. It's at an akward stage now, and I'd hate to end up looking like Frenchy from Grease.

Or... maybe I'll just try it! I have an appointment next weekend...

Are you going on a trip this summer? Taking a cruise? Flying somewhere, anywhere?

Yea, me neither. It's "Stay-cations" from here on out :-)

BUT, on the offchance that you ARE one of those people who might be going somewhere cool in the next few months, lets talk packing.

*Insert Groan Here*

I know, I know. Packing for some people is about as fun as finding the perfect pair of shoes and then getting to the store and finding out they don't have your size. But I never really minded it, even thought I was pretty good at it.

Until SHE came along.

"She," is my older sister, who visisted last week from Chicago. She stayed for a week. She vacay-ed. I stay-cayed.

I was a little confused though, when we picked her up from the airport. Where were her bags?

"Oh, I only brought one," she said.

Hold up, what? WHAT?! One bag?

This can't be, I thought. Two years ago I went back to Michigan for a three-day trip and had a large suitcase, a carry-on, a big purse, a laptop and a dog. No joke. I'm one of those chicks who has to have "options."

Sure enough, though, my sister really did only bring one bag. But she got a LOT in there.

In fact, I saw with my own eyes how she magically turned THIS:

into THIS:

She was kind enough (OK, I begged) to share with me her secrets, which I'm passing on to you guys. And in a time when it seems like the cost of travel is going up, hopefully some of these tips will be helpful.

Tips for the Traveling Diva

1. Choose your luggage wisely - Honestly, this really comes down to where you're going. But my sis had two objectives: something small enough to double as a carry-on, yet roomy enough to hold a lot of stuff. She ended up with this blue, 21" upright bag you see above. It's available at Target for about $65.

2. Choose your clothes even wiser - This is where I slip up. My sis suggests grabbing EVERYTHING you think you might need a few days before your trip (instead of the few hours before like I ususally do). Put it in one spot. Then, start purging.

3. Fold, and refold - Those of us who worked in retail are at a little of an advantage here, but the general idea is simple: Try to get your clothes as tiny as possible. This doesn't mean you have to roll your socks, but it won't help anything to just chuck piles of jeans in there.

4. Map it out - Think of your bag or suitcase as having "zones." My sister swears by this formula: pants, T-shirts and other clothes on the bottom, easily foldable things like blouses, tank tops and some skirts and dresses on the sides, shoes on top, socks and underwear in the mesh pocket, and accessories and other small tems in all the rest of the nooks and crannies.

5. Think ahead for future purchases - Because what are the chances that you'll leave vacation with LESS stuff, right? To prepare for this, my sis suggested not only trying to leave a little room in your suitcase for anything you might buy, but also perhaps investing in a large purse for double duty, since most airlines will let you bring a carry-on plus a purse (or laptop bag) on the plane at no charge. My sis ended up going with this $30 tote from Target. When she came down, it was largely empty. By the time she left, she used it to tow small things that no longer fit in her suitcase, like small accessories and some souvenirs she bought.

6 Use someone else's bag - No, I really don't mean go out and commit a crime by taking someone else's bag. But, there's no shame in asking your traveling companions if the have extra room in their suitcases. I know that whenever my boyfriend and I go places, he always has WAY less stuff, and what's the harm in lending some of that extra space to us who REALLY, TRULY NEED IT?

7. Have fun on your trip and make your host ship you the extra stuff you said you weren't going to splurge on but did anyway. - OK, this wasn't one of my sister's tips at all. I just made this one up for me. ;-)

Looking for shoes to walk down the aisle

Don't get too excited. It's my best friend who's getting married, not I.

But as a bridesmaid, I'll be walking down the aisle too. And with the wedding just a couple weeks away, I'm now on the hunt for the perfect shoes. Our bride has requested we wear silver or gold with our beautiful moss colored dresses.

My dress is just on the edge of being too long, so I either need to hem it or go high on the heels. I think I'll start looking for high heels and if I can't find the right ones, go for lower and a hem. I'm leaning more toward gold than silver, but I'll look at both options.

DSW, let's see whatcha got.

There's a chance I may be drawn to this pump because it's named "Barbie." I love it, and would definitely wear it again, but is it too flashy for the occasion?

This straps on this sandal almost mirror the pleats on the top of the dress, no? Plus I love the subtle rhinestone detail. This pair would definitely solve the hem-length problem.

These would require the hem, but they do look more comfortable. They come in silver or gold. I love a good T-strap.

Hot pants for packin' heat

Given the recent rise in concealed weapons permits, perhaps this was only a matter of time. Fashion is now catering to those packin' heat.

The clothing company Woolrich is now adding a second pocket to its $65 chino pants, behind behind its traditional front pocket, to hold a weapon. They're also adding a stretchable waistband for those who prefer to use a holster, the New York Times reported.

< This guy's all like, dude, I need those pants.

My Outfit Monday: All dressed up and nowhere to go

The headline sounds pathetic, doesn't it?

But that's where I found myself yesterday, when the rainy weather this past weekend pretty much killed my beach plans.

Boo hoo.

But I wasn't going to let a little rain ruin all my grand wardrobe plans. I got this hat the other day from JCPenney ($14) and I had my heart set on wearing it to the beach along with my new swimsuit.

Instead I ended up just wearing it -- the hat, not my bathing suit -- around the house like a crazy woman.

What do you guys think?

I paired it with one of my favorite pairs of jeans (I can't remember how much they cost), and my "Barbie dumped Ken," T-shirt that I got on a trip to Tally some months ago for $4.50.

You can't see my feet, but I didn't have any shoes on anyway, so you're not missing much.

Pinellas high school students paint Vans shoes, are awesome, etc.

When I was in school art class, the only things I could conjure up were construction paper greeting cards and pieces of pottery full of thumbprints. It seems the kiddos have stepped it up these days.

Some super-artistic students from St. Petersburg, Largo and Osceloa Fundamental high schools competed in the Vans Custom Culture art contest, designed to spotlight the importance of art programs in schools. Vans sent shoes in four styles (106, Sk8-Hi, Slip On, and Authentic) to the first 1,000 schools in the country to enter, and students designed custom works in four themes -- action sports, music, art and local flavor.

Vans whittled down the entries to a top 50, and it looks like our neighborhood schools did not make it (BOOOO). But if you want to go online and vote for the ones who did, do it here. The top five finalists will fly to Los Angeles for an art showcase with celebrity judges who will determine the winner of $50,000 for their school art program.

So the other night some girlfriends and I went to see American Stage in the Park's production of Rocky Horror.

It was gobs of fun. HIGHLY recommend.

But it didn't take long for us to realize someone was watching us. A nice-looking couple in the row ahead of us. Sure enough, several minutes later, the woman came over with her phone in her hand. She flipped it around for me to see. "Is that you?" she asked.

I was flabbergasted. It WAS me. Or at least, a picture of me on the blog.

Meet Caroline Calcote, a 42-year-old stay at home mom of two boys. Calcote told me she's a huge fan of Deal Divas, which made my night and was a great start to this week's staycation.

Calcote, a former lawyer who also blogs about life, kids and maintaining a 100 pound weight loss from about 5 years ago (you GO girl!), looked great and relaxed and way more prepared than me and my buddies. (Note to self: bring beach seats next time.)

Rock ombre hair without looking like a skunk

And now, we bring you a special guest post from a junior Deal Diva, Katie Lamont from our friends at tb-two*. Take it away, Katie!

Ombre (oum-bray) is the style for lazy people. I fully embrace that fact. The look, whose name comes from the French word for “shaded” or “shading,” is captured usually by lightening the ends of the hair to about mid-shaft, slowly blending into your natural (darker) roots color. The lazy part is, unlike most color jobs, you don’t have to worry about touching up the roots.

The trendy style has been seen for the past year or so, and isn’t dead yet. In fact, my venture into the ombre world was due to Miley Cyrus’ effortless locks at the LA premiere of The Hunger Games last month (right). Of course, as I sit here resembling a skunk, maybe Miley is the only one who can pull this off. Ombre is simple, low-maintenance and also cost-effective (no touchups), if it’s done right. To avoid skunk hair, listen up.

OMBRE DO

Find a stylist who has done it before. It pays off especially if you don’t totally understand how to achieve the look yourself.
Google-image until you jam your hand from clicking. Ombre can be natural-looking, or more dramatic, and finding an image of exactly what you want is a lifesaver.
Get your hair trimmed BEFORE, not after the coloring, because you don’t want to cut off the lightest ends and ruin the impact.

OMBRE DON’T

Don’t think you can DIY this tricky style. The gradation is important, and difficult to do.
Don’t assume the stylist knows what you want. Talk it out and take the time to make sure you are both on the same page, referring to the picture of your wish.
Don’t penny-pinch. You get what you pay for, and to look good is worth a price.
So, even though I’m not so happy with the outcome of my ombre experiment, I haven’t gone back to get my hair redone (after all, the stylist thought I looked “so great”). That’s partly because if I wear it curly, the less than gentle color line between the Lizzie McGuire blond and my regular brown is not so obvious. And, as I said earlier, I’m lazy.

My Outfit Monday: a floral feeling

Walking my dog lately, every few blocks I'm overcome with the smells of blooming flowers -- jasmine, gardenia, roses. Spring, it seems, has sprung! I figured I'd do my part with my outfit today.

My floral patterned shirt is a thrift store find from way back when. It's a trend that's timeless.

I got the black pants on sale at the Michael Kors outlet at the Ellenton Outlet mall.

My black wedges are a recent Target spurge, and my beaded necklace was bought on a post-graduation trip to Paris.
