KDE 4.2 Upgrade Begin

So I've begun the upgrade, but I just found out that the network manager plasmoid isn't ready yet... This combined with the fact that I'm having compliation errors with digikam, that I still need the KDE3 libs to run K3B, Quanta, and Kmymoney2, and that it might worth the wait for Gentoo's stable branch to swith to the slot system, may put a hold on my adoption of 4.2...

But it will be easy to restore my 3.9 setup and begin waiting for this summers 4.3 release.

Looks like KDE 4.2 has entered Gentoo's portage. This is what I've been waiting for... I've tried the OpenSuse brand of KDE 4 (I'm a Gentoo user but OpenSuse is faster for a temporary trial) once or twice over the past year, and while i like it's direction, I found it lacking in polish (and apps). KDE 4.2 promises the polish and feature set (with the exception of Quanta) necessary for me to make the leap.

Over next few days I'll give it a go, and perhaps I'll even document the process (I maintain my systems in a slightly different manner than the average install).

You may have noticed that the photo and video sections of this site have disappeared... This is because I've had some compatibility issues upgrading from an early version of Drupal 5 to Drupal 6.9. It may take me a little while to get around to it, but I do plan to restore most of the missing content. I will also be adding a fair bit of new content, and the order of things may change to reflect it.

I must say that I’m happy to be back, and outside of my upgrade issues Drupal 6 is a beautiful thing.

You I never realized the number of sites that have been using drupal: The Onion, Warner Brothers, HarvardScience, SonyBMG's BS Weekly, Amnesty International, Popular Science, and Forbes Office Pranks.

So it's now 2009 and I've got some plans:

Get back into training... it's been a year now since I've done much of anything --I'd like to gear up to run a couple of races this summer.
Make money, save, and invest... I need the money to buy a building in the next couple of years.
Learn the art of frugality, and read more about investing.
Take a course in renovations, and read a couple of books on the subject.
Continue to tweak my attempts to be environmentally sustainable (I love my worm bins).
Get back into blogging.

Christmas Buy 2008

The Souk@SAT is on again from December 12th to the 14th (this weekend) at the SAT (1195 St. Laurent).

And the Salon des métiers d’art du Québec is already up and running until the 21st (Place Bonaventure).

It looks like Yale is offering a variety of it's introductory courses for free:

While it's possible to teach yourself a little about everything, and a lot about somethings online, it's nice to see an ivy league school openly offering some structured courses.

Since it's time to make the sacrificial purchases required by Christmas, it's also tome to lessen the pain by supporting local artisans:

Salon des métiers d’art du Québecruns from from the 7th to the 22nd... it's huge, and you should be able to find something for just about everyone.

souk @ sat runs from the 14th to the 16th... it's young and hip and fun just to go.
