Incep prin a spune ca sunt un liberal convins. Prin aparitia unui nou partid care se proclama a fi liberal voi avea de ales la alegeri intre PNL si PDL.

La prima vedere mi se pare extrem de dubios sa votez un partid care este si liberal si democrat. Pentru ca nu mi se pare o alaturare naturala. Pentru ca mi se pare ca singurul scop al acestei alaturari este ca mai multi oameni dintr-un anumit cerc sa ajunga in parlament si administratia publica locala. Vad numai avantaje pentru ei, nu si pentru mine. Am avut exact acelasi sentiment si cu Alianta DA. Numai ca atunci nu prea aveam de ales.

Nu mi se pare corecta atitudinea d-lui Stolojan de a arata cu degetul la "petroliberali". As prefera sa sublinieze meritele si programele sale. Mai ales ca are o mare datorie. Inca nu a clarificat episodul retragerii din cursa prezidentiala din 2004.

In acelasi timp PNL pare afectat de o grava criza de oameni. Cel putin asta inteleg din faptul ca sunt unsi ministri fara niciun fel de experienta gen Chiuariu sau Adomnitei, sau personaje dubioase gen Remes (nu stiu cum a aterizat omul asta in PNL). Imi vine greu insa sa le reprosez asta din moment ce eu stau de-o parte. Multi altii fac la fel si de-aia nu mai avem de unde alege.

Sunt curios ce urmeaza.

Hai sa vedem jumatatea plina a paharului: daca era campionat modial era si Brazilia in grupa. :)

Repetitii pentru parada de ziua nationala

Pentru a doua oara in saptamana asta m-am blocat aiurea in trafic din cauza repetitiilor pentru parada de ziua nationala.

Nu stiu altii cum sunt, dar mie imi creste tensiunea ca astia isi bat joc de mine pe banii mei. Dupa ce ca tot orasul e un santier si abia se circula, se mai gasesc si ei sa inchida strazi 3 zile intr-o saptamana pentru o parada militara de care nu-i pasa nimanui.

1. Desteptii care isi iau gipuri si mertzane si bemveuri sh sa faca bine sa isi cumpere si becuri pentru semnalizare si stopuri. Nu de alta dar poate intru in ei cand schimba banda ca idiotii si nu cred ca au CASCO.

2. De ce politistii care dirijeaza intersectiile nu dau din maini asa cum scrie la lege? Oare stiu?

3. Gardienii publici au voie sa dirijeze circulatia?
3b. Mai exista gardieni publici? Parca se transformasera in politie comunitara
(Azi dimineata era un nene cu sapca de gardian public care dirija circulatia pe Stefan cel Mare).

Robotul de cautare a baut prea mult ieri (probabil de bucurie ca a inceput sa creasca traficul) si a indexat doar jumatate din site-uri in noaptea asta. L-am pus din nou la lucru dar rezultatele se vor vedea abia diseara.

Sapatamana aceasta am lansat in sfarsit blogrank.targetit.ro. Nu am facut mare valva, sper sa fie descoperit treptat si sa fie gasit util.

Am gasit o groaza de bloguri, am vazut care cu care se leaga, am numarat, am facut clasament si acum il arat la toata lumea. :)

Acum sunt aproape 10 000 de bloguri in top si inca vreo 5 000 de site-uri in lista de asteptare.

Mi-am pus multe sperante in acest proiect, acum vreau sa vad daca prinde. Daca da, voi mai adauga functionalitati. Daca nu, cred ca ies la pensie.

Copiii au facut un an

Ieri, 23 august, Vlad si Horia au implinit un an. A fost o perioada grea pentru noi, dar acum lucrurile incep sa se aseze, ei au inceput sa mai inteleaga cate ceva, incep sa si vorbeasca.

Duminica ii ducem pentru prima data la mare, la Eforie Nord. Sper sa se comporte OK. Incerc sa pun niste poze aici cand ne intoarcem.

Fixing urpmi database locked on Mandriva Linux

I am running Mandriva Cooker and I am updating my system very often using urpmi --auto-update. While doing that this evening, I got this:

# urpmi --auto-update
urpmi database locked

urpmi creates a lock file to make sure that only one instance is running at a time and that the rpm database is not corrupted. However, as I just booted the system I'm very sure that no other instance of urpmi is running and the lock file is safe to remove.

I solved the problem by issuing the following command:

# rm -f /var/lib/urpmi/.LOCK

Gmail for your domain

"Google is your friend" is a very common thing to say for the average computer geek. Somehow I feel this is about to change.

Google just launched Gmail for your domain (limited beta as of now) for free at www.google.com/hosted

Besides the stangard 2GB email storage for every user, this service also gives users access to Google Talk, Google Calendar and a Control Panel where users can edit email addresses for their domain, create mailing lists and so on.

Let's get back to the "Google is your friend" story. This move hits hard in many small consultancies that were making money just from offering this kind of service to other small companies. These small companies will be very tempted by this new free offering and I expect it will be very hard for common geeks to compete their friend.

I think the secret for small consultancies is to offer a great level of customization and very good human support, where you can call at any time and a familiar voice answers and assures you that your problem is being taken care of. That's where Google can be beaten. It's all too cold.

I don't know what's the reason but I've been very lazy about updating this blog.

I will try (again) to change this from now on.

So, here's what happened lately

- we are expecting two boys; they will come in late september
- we had a nasty car accident past month; we are getting better now
- we bought a new appartment and moved there (Pantelimon street in Bucharest)

I am still working on the upcoming XHP CMS release (0.6). I will try to post more technical articles soon.

Iri gave me the great news a few days ago.

It seems we'll have a baby this autumn. This was great news for everybody. I'm still very excited about this... don't know what to say... I'll be a father. :)

Finally upgraded to XHP 0.5

I finally made some time to upgrade my home page to XHP v0.5.

Lots of things changed in XHP lately but I didn't have the time so far to update my blog. But now here it is.

I preserved the old blog entries in the Personal blog. I also created a new blog for Web Development and I will probably start others in future.

Steaua beats Valencia and enters the UEFA Cup last 16

Last night my favourite soccer team, Steaua Bucharest [ http://www.steauafc.com/ ] managed to beat Valencia [ http://www.valenciacf.es/ ] in the UEFA cup and qualified to the last 16. It's been a very exciting game to watch, being decided only after penalty shoot-out.

The hero of the game was Cristea [ http://www.steauafc.com/nou/personal.php?id=182&l=ro ], who scored two breath-taking goals.

I also liked a lot Dorinel Munteanu [ http://www.steauafc.com/nou/personal.php?id=178&l=ro ], the oldest player of the team, who's experience was very important. Dorinel played the whole game (120 mins) even if he is 36 years old. Great game!

This is the best Romanian soccer performance from 1990 and I hope this is only the beginning. ;-)

Passing arrays in PHP through the URL

This is a PHP feature I just found. I bet there are lots of PHP developers out there that don't know about it so I had to put it here.

You can pass your array through the URL (or the $_GET variable) like this:
http://your.host/yourscript.php?names[]=John&names[]=William

If in yourscript.php you do a print_r($_GET['names']) you end up with this:

Array ( [0] => John [1] => William )

That's it! I'm sure you can handle from here. ;-)

Loading an SQL file with a PHP script

While writing code for letting XHP users upload custom modules, I had to import an SQL file in MySQL using a PHP script.

In a completely ignorant move, I read the whole SQL file in a string and then passed the string as an SQL query to mysql_query(). Obviously this resulted in an SQL syntax error.

So it became obvious that I need to split the SQL file in separate queries and execute them one by one.

After a Google search on how could I perform the split, I found way too many ignorant articles stating that this can be done with a simple split() PHP function. They do something like this: $queries = split(";",$sqlstring);

The problem with this approach is that will result in invalid queries for most of the real life SQL files. Think columns in comments and in strings.

It's clear that some checks need to be made. And the thought of figuring out all those checks that need to be made may be scare for an average PHP developer (like myself ;-) ).

Fortunatelly, I found the solution to my problem looking in the phpMyAdmin source code. Take a look at this:

The function PMA_splitSqlFile does exactly what we need. So the simple solution is to include the read_dump.lib.php file in your project and use the function. Be carefull with the licencing issues though. phpMyAdmin is covered by GPL, so make sure your project is GPL compatible. Don't forget to give credit for people's work!.

I just added Google AdSense to my homepage. The idea is to test the product as a solution for the future XHP homepage.

All those night spent coding for XHP need some reward. So I'm thinking on moving the XHP homepage away from Sourceforge.net to a commercial hosting and setting up AdSense on it. It all depends on how it will perform here.

As I need more visitors to my homepage now, I plan to have a technical blog where I will explain the coolest technologies used in XHP and probably other interesting things too.

Nothing much happened lately... I did write lots of code for XHP though and I will release a new version soon. I'm very proud that WYSIWYG editing finally works. I also have multilevel menus. The are some other things I want to add and then I'll release.

Working on XHP in almost all my spare time kind of transformed me into an anti-social geek. :-D So it's time to change that and tonight it's party time.

Wicked news: Man married wrong twin

First of all I must say that I'm alive and well after the earthquake. Things like this make me think that living on the 10th floor may not be such a good idea after all.

It seems this news is so cool that the source site has been killed by the visitors. I hope it won't happen to my site too when the source site will be up and I can get the article. Just waiting for now...

It seems I can't access the full story for now, so here's the start:

"A Romanian man is demanding a divorce after finding out he married the twin sister of the woman he fell in love with. Vladut R, from Constanta, lived for three years with his wife Monica but says he couldn't go on with the "ordeal" because he loved her sister."

I'll try to get the rest of the story and put it here. I only hope they were identical twins. :-D

Iri got her first job

Great news folks! My wife, Iri, got her first job last week. She\'s working for Sensiblu, one of the biggest Romanian pharmacy chains. She\'s very happy there and I am very proud of her.

For those who wrote us (and specially Iri) lately and didn\'t get an answer... it seems we\'ll have an ISP in our area in a few weeks and we\'ll be able to reply for all the messages.
