Network aspects of virtualized small cells

This report explores network impacts associated with virtualization of small cell base stations.

The approach is to evolve the NFV concepts that have been used to propose a virtualized small cell core network defined in SCF154: ‘Virtualization in Small Cell networks’ and apply those concepts to virtualization of the small cell base station functions.

Only 4G (LTE) small cell base stations are considered.

Despite losing out in Thailand's recent 4G auctions, Telenor has no plans of exiting the Thai market, according to the company's CEO Sigve Brekke.

In an interview with the Bangkok Post, Brekke said Telenor's Thai unit Dtac remains the company's most lucrative subsidiary. Dtac contributed 14.4% of Telenor Group's total revenue in Q315.

Underlying Telenor's commitment to Thailand, Brekke said the company plans to invest 20 billion baht ($551.8 million) in network expansion this year.

Optimization to dominate RAN budgets in 2016

Mobile operators will devote the majority of their RAN budgets in 2016 to optimization, followed by SON, according to Rethink Research.

Operators are expected to spend a combined $1.65 billion on RAN optimization over the year, more than twice the projected $758 million that will be spent on SON, the research firm has predicted.

One motivation for investing in RAN optimization is the goal of being able to track a user's location and relate that to the condition of the cells they need to use.

This would allow operators to cross reference problems found with...

Last year, I wrote in this space how trendy it is for analysts and journalists to look into their crystal balls and tell you what to expect in the coming year. For me, it makes more sense to look back on the past year and see what failed or otherwise made no sense, in the faint hope that we can jettison the silly stuff and remedy the situation for next year.

My opinion on this has changed little since last year’s column. Sadly, the same is true for the telecoms world. It’s like an old steam engine - it just keeps going along on its merry way, needing a little fuel and water to keep...

In this space last year, I wrote about how the Internet of Things, while overhyped, was still pretty cool, not to mention inevitable, and that 2015 would likely see a lot of IoT activity.

And we did. Unfortunately, some of that activity didn’t come from telcos, service providers or “things” manufacturers, which brings me to one important aspect of the IoT I neglected to mention last year: security.

Put simply, when you enable something with an internet connection, it is beholden to the same internet security issues as a server, laptop or smartphone. Put even more simply:...

A new wireless standard that extends Wi-Fi's reach down into the 900MHz band will keep the 802.11 family at the center of the developing Internet of Things, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced this week.

Thailand’s newest cellco Jas4G has launched a crowdsourcing initiative asking its 3BB broadband customers if they can host cellsites. CEO Pete Bodharamik said he was in talks with CAT Telecom on tower sharing, but complained that CAT was charging five times the actual cost of a new site in rental fees.

Jas has also opened reservations for its SIM cards and aims to launch within two weeks, though whether it is a skeleton network or using one of its two MVNO licenses remains a mystery.

TrueMove has said it would consider allocating Jas4G bandwidth on “its” 850 network for...

With 2015 just about wrapped up, Asia’s telecoms players are already looking ahead to 2016 with vigor and enthusiasm. We know this because Telecom Asia has conducted its fifth annual Business Outlook Survey, in which we ask the region’s telecoms players to tell us their hopes, dreams and expectations for the next 12 months. And the results reflect more enthusiasm and optimism than fear and uncertainty.

According to this year’s survey - conducted online in October and November - most respondents are expecting healthy market growth and financial returns in 2016, driven primarily by...

It’s time to predict the future again. Telecom Asia presents six visions of 2016 from top telecoms/IT analysts, consultants and pundits. And perhaps unsurprisingly, you’ll be hearing a lot about digital disruption and digital transformation, as more telcos take decisive action to transform themselves into digital service providers and take a lead in the digital disruption all around us.
Not all at once of course. To paraphrase William Gibson, the future won’t be evenly distributed - the Digital Era will happen in phases, and in some markets may not happen for a few more years....

In last year’s Visions report, I highlighted falling revenues and net neutrality as being major issues CSPs would face in the year ahead. But neither became the big issue I anticipated.

The telecoms industry has an uncanny ability to weather storms, and even if voice revenues are down, overall revenues appear to be holding - with most of the pressure being felt in sustaining margins. This is likely to continue as CSPs offer an ever-burgeoning cornucopia of third-party products and services.

On the other hand, net neutrality seems to have fizzled as an area of concern for...

2016 will be a critical year for telcos and service providers to improve their ability to serve digitally savvy, empowered customers. To thrive in the age of the customer, they must internalize the concept of customer obsession and accept that digital innovations have disrupted their business models and created customers who are not only empowered, but entitled. Current marketing organizations need restructuring to ensure that the marketing team possesses increased control and responsiveness in the face of growing customer expectations.
