In recent weeks Google and Apple brought the eSIM into the spotlight by including it within their latest product launches, the Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL and the Apple Watch Series 3 with Cellular.

The eSIM gives us an improved and more secure customer experience, better designed devices, opens up new market opportunities for operators and enables entire new categories of connected devices. Let’s explore this baby in a little more detail.

Please bear with us for the next few paragraphs, as we look back in time.

The SIM card has reduced in size of the last 27 years

SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards store network-specific information used to authenticate and identify subscribers on a cellular network and for the last 27 years have consisted of a physical card containing the chip which has to be inserted into the phone.

You may or may not remember, but in 1991, the SIM card that you inserted into your phone was the size of a credit card! In the intervening years the size of the humble SIM card has dramatically reduced.

As manufacturers continuously strive to make smaller, slimmer and lighter devices with more features, space is at an absolute premium. Even the humble headphone jack is starting to disappear to save precious millimeters, though the cynics among us may say that is to up-sell wireless headphones.

Surely the Nano-SIM, which at 12.30 mm in length and 8.80 mm wide is small enough? Yet, as an industrial designer, you have to remember that it’s not only the size of the SIM card itself but also the space taken up by the associated internal hardware and circuitry that needs to be accommodated. For many years, manufactures have had to design and accommodate the physical SIM card via SIM card trays or other internal slots. In the quest for more durable and waterproof phones, the more ingress points that can be removed the better.

More importantly, if you want to change operator either after your contract has ended or you’re traveling on holiday, you have to go and seek out a new SIM. In certain parts of the world, that’s easier said than done.

It’s all changing though. In the last few years Apple introduced the Apple SIM for use in iPad and as we led with, Google and Apple has included an eSIM as part of its new product launches.

What is the eSIM?

The eSIM/Embedded SIM, or as it’s more formally known, embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC), is smaller again at 5 mm in length and 5 mm in width and is soldered onto a device’s motherboard at the point of manufacturing while having the same functionality as a removable SIM. It has M2M (Machine to Machine) and Remote Provisioning capabilities. Now a GSMA standard, it wont be long before we see the eSIM become standard in other top tier handsets from Apple and Samsung, quickly followed by the others.

The future of eSIMs

The eSIM is the future but it will not happen overnight, look down at your phone now and it’s still got a physical SIM, and will still need one when you pass it onto your kids, other family members or sell it. In the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL the eSIM is currently only used by Google Project Fi and thus it has a physical Nano-SIM card tray for all the other operators.

Don’t Miss:

What is certain though, given the time it will take manufacturers to include eSIM’s as standard, operator adoption and the life-cycle of current devices, it wont take another 27 years before we’ll see the physical SIM card consigned to history once and for all. So let Me know your thought concerning this new development using the Comment Section below!

VLC is probably the most capable multimedia player available on every computing platform. It makes use of professional libraries for media manipulation and can carry out almost anything related to multimedia with the correct configuration. Among others, it can run on Windows, Linux, Mac-OS as well as iOS and Android. On desktops, VLC is constantly under heavy development trying to keep up with advances in multimedia technology. In fact, it does that pretty well and it can decode and encode almost every media format you throw at it.

Unlike desktop platforms though, VLC development on Android is slower. The complexity of Android platform and the special hardware characteristics of embedded platforms make the code porting process difficult. However, version 2.5 of VLC for Android came out recently, featuring some tweaks and interesting additions.

Picture in Picture Mode

With its 2.5 release, VLC is one of the first Apps that can make use of Android Oreo’s Picture in Picture (PiP) mode. VLC also supports PiP mode on Android Nougat TV. It enables playback of videos in a separate window above other Apps. In addition, VLC provides an option to automatically continue video playback in PiP or background(audio only) mode while multitasking.

Enhanced User Interface

VLC for Android was always known for its bad looking User Interface. On this version, developers made an effort in updating the App’s interface by making it more Material Design friendly. The App will now display video information above each video’s cover picture. Moreover, multiple item selection is now available, making playlist creation easier. Card-view design is removed. Audio player has also seen some re-styling, its background now is a blurred version of current music cover, if it is available.

In addition, User Interface improvements made it possible to introduce a clean and easy to use Android Auto interface. This interface packs Google Voice search support too.

Redesigned Search

Search works a little different on this release. At first, typing something in the search box will trigger filtering in the current App view. A button stating “SEARCH IN ALL MEDIA LIBRARY” will then appear. Clicking this button will trigger a global search. Moreover, results are now grouped by video/artist/album/songs/genres/playlist.

Furthermore, VLC is compatible with Google Voice Search. Asking Google Now to do a search for something in VLC will instantiate a search in the VLC App.

360° Videos Playback Support

VLC can now play 360° videos. The user can change the viewpoint by swiping on the playback screen or with remote control arrows. Cardboard and VR support didn’t arrive in this release, but they will appear in the future.

New Database Model for Media Library

The Open Source media player now uses MediaLibrary for storing the device media library. MediaLibrary creates a SQL database for saving media information and enables faster data gathering and manipulation. Moreover, it is written in C++, which makes it faster to execute than Android Java code. VLC developers aim to make MediaLibrary a common module of all VLC ports. In the future, it will allow the Android VLC App to get extra capabilities, such as advanced content grouping and searching NAS content.

Media Formats Support and Playback Performance

Adaptive (HLS/DASH) & TS playback is improved

The player now uses OpenGLES 2.0 to render video on software decoders and media codec

Support for VP8/9/10 in the MP4 container

HDMI pass-through is now available

Lastly, this version of VLC drops support for Android Froyo devices, which do not have access to Google Play Store anymore.

VLC for Android (Free, Google Play) →

Whatsapp is, without a doubt, a fantastic instant messaging app. It not only lets you send text messages to your contacts but also lets you make video and audio calls. One of its biggest qualities is that it offers an incredibly intuitive and easy to use interface. Quite interestingly, you can use Whatsapp in more ways than one. For instance, you can use it as a private store of your important files, memos, notes, scanned documents etc. and access these items through various electronic devices. In this article, we are going to discuss how to use Whatsapp as a private store for your files.

Use Whatsapp as an Unlimited Storage Solution

If you are an experienced user of Whatsapp, then you know all too well that you can easily share files and documents with your contacts on Whatsapp with just a few taps. So, in order to use Whatsapp as a storage solution for your files and notes, all you need to do is create a virtual contact within Whatsapp, and share your important files with that contact, and access those files whenever you want to.

Sounds confusing? The below Steps will make it more Clearer, just follow Me….

How to Use Whatsapp as an Unlimited Storage Solution for Your Documents

The first thing that you have to do is create a group. If you are a seasoned Whatsapp user, then it’s highly likely that you know how to create a group on Whatsapp. It’s very simple; just open Whatsapp and tap on the menu button on the top right corner and then select New Group. After that, all you have to do is select participants of the group and put a title to the group.

In this particular case, make a new group with only one participant. Select any contact from your contacts list and add it to the group.

After the group is created, open this group and tap its subject to view the list of participants of this group. Since there is only one participant, press and hold on its name and remove it from the group.

That’s it! What you’ve got now is a private store of your files and data that is visible only to you, which you can access from your smartphone/Android device and computer.

You can use this group to store as many documents as you want and then retrieve them later according to your requirements. You can even transfer files from your computer to this group by visiting the web version of Whatsapp (web.whatsapp.com) from your personal computer.

DON”T MISS:

Over the years, Android is gradually maturing as an Operating System, the reasons to root your phone are becoming scarce. Been an endorsed supporter of rooting myself, i just can’t imagine using an android device without wanting to root it, I enjoy the control over my phone rooting it gives. Before now, there has been an unofficial port for android nougat but it wasn’t having a full port. Some people still won’t find the availability of Xposed Framework reason enough to root their device now. But if you’ve been waiting for Xposed Framework to arrive for Android Nougat, you can now install it.

Why This Long Wait?

It has been over a year now, the wait was pretty darn long but the official Xposed Framework for Android Nougat is finally here. New releases of Android often bring to the way ART works, which may require parts of Xposed to be reworked. For instance, with Android 7.0 Nougat, Google introduced a Just-in-Time compiler to help improveruntime performance of applications.

In the unofficial port of Xposed, developer abforce disabled many ART optimizations so that method hooking could work correctly. The implementation wasn’t obviously complete and not very stable. This is one of the primary reasons the developer of Xposed, rovo89, is hesitant to make his code open source and include more manpower. He prefers a better late than not safe approach.

And so now, he has come up with a way to keep all the ART optimizations, by recompiling a method’s caller using JIT and still having the method hooks in place. TL;DR this means you can still enjoy Xposed Framework as intended, without sacrificing performance by forcefully disabling ART optimizations.

That’s not all though. Since its inception, Xposed Framework was a way for people to enjoy custom ROM features on their stock ROMs. To oversimplify the process, it achieves this by allowing the modules to “hook” into the methods of other installed apps. The actual process is a lot more complicated and to make it work nearly universally on rooted devices, without needing a custom ROM, takes a lot of time.

Requirements

As usual, you will need a rooted Android device.

Your device also must have a custom recovery already installed.

Downloads

Xposed Installer 3.1.2 APK

Android 7.0 Nougat (sdk24) – Xposed Framework flashable zip

Android 7.1 Nougat (sdk25) – Xposed Framework flashable zip

How to install Xposed Framework on Android Nougat

Download the Xposed Installer APK and the respective Xposed Framework flashable zip according to your Android version and device architecture.

arm – 32-bit devices

arm64 – 64-bit devices

x86 – devices with an Intel chip

Transfer the downloaded files to your Android device.

Boot your device into recovery mode. On many Android devices, this can be done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down button together. But depending on the make and model of your device, the process can greatly differ.

Assuming that your device has the TWRP custom recovery like most others, it’d be a good idea to tap on the Backup button and create a NANDroid backup first.

To install Xposed, tap on the Install button and then select the downloaded flashable zip file.

Swipe at the bottom to flash the zip.

When the process is complete, you’ll see a Reboot system button at the bottom. Tap on it and your device should boot up normally.

Once it does, find the Xposed Installer APK you downloaded using a file explorer of your choice. Tap on the APK to install it. Though highly unlikely, if you haven’t enabled Unknown sources in Settings > Security you will have to do so before you can install the APK.

You’re now ready to launch Xposed Installer and download your favorite modules.

Don’t Miss:

The lead developer of the Xposed Framework, rovo89 had been constantly updating users about the development but for some the wait was unbearable. I too was among those who had moved on to a life without Xposed. Are you ready to go back to the Xposed life? Or would you rather not?

You’re probably getting used to us trotting out this line in big announcement posts, but there’s no getting away from it – as per usual, the rumour mill left nothing to surprise us with and the two new Pixel phones fit pretty much spot on with what we’ve heard in advance.

Google Pixel XL 2

As with the previous generation, the Pixel XL 2 is the larger device, but also the more expensive with some slightly superior specs in some areas – most notably the display. The LG-made handset sports one of the Korean firm’s 18:9 aspect ratio, P-OLED display panels with a 1,440 x 2,880px resolution at 538ppi.

Android 8.0 Oreo also grants native Always On display support.

It’s a 6in display which is taller than the last-gen Pixel XL’s screen, though the same width. A polaraizer has also been added to improve readability in bright sunshine, and it uses Gorilla Glass 5 for protection from knocks.

The long side-bezels are very narrow, but the top and bottom are thicker than what we’ve become used to on 18:9 display handsets due to the presence of dual stereo speakers on the front, at top and bottom.

Design-wise you’re looking at an aluminium frame and glass panelling on the back as well, and, pleasingly contrary to late-in-the-day rumours the Pixel XL 2 does feature IP67 water and dust resistance; a significant boost on the first gen which means the phone can actually survive a dunk in the bath.

The primary camera is a single-sensor 12MP setup, which improves on the Pixel XL with optical stabilisation added (OIS). The front-facing selfie cam is an 8MP setup with an f/2.4 aperture – same as last year.

The processor is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, backed up by 4GB of RAM. The base storage model is 64GB and there’s a 128GB version for high rollers. The battery cell is the same as 2016’s model at 3,520mAh.

The Pixel XL 2 uses an eSIM for services like Google Fi, but it still has a nano-SIM slot if you want to keep with conventional methods via GSM and CDMA. Lastly, the Pixel XL 2 (and the Pixel 2) borrow the HTC U11’s squeezy lower surround, which can be used to trigger certain software functions on the device – by default this is set up to launch Google Assistant.

It’ll arrive in the middle of November with the 64GB model starting at $850. The 128GB model will cost $950. Colour options include “Just Black” or “Black & White.”

Google Pixel 2

The “regular” Pixel 2 is the more affordable edition. For the most part the spec is the same as the Pixel XL 2, but the main difference is the display, which isn’t one of those wide aspect ratio 18:9 jobbies and thus doesn’t have very narrow side bezels. The Pixel 2 also keeps the stereo front-facing speakers at top and bottom.

The display is a 5in AMOLED setup with a 1080p resolution; basically the same as last year.

The Pixel 2 will land at the same time as its brother – mid-November. The 64GB base model costs $650 while the 128GB edition is $750, meaning that slightly lower spec display does save you a few bucks. Colour choices are “Just Black”, “Clearly White”, and “Kinda Blue.”

OK, this is pretty crazy. I like headphones, and I spend alot of time with them, but what Google just announced pretty much left my jaw on the ground.

The Google Pixel Buds are a new pair of headphones that launched alongside Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. But it is not what they look like or what they sound like that is so impressive – no, it’s what they can do.

Google’s Pixel Buds can translate language in REAL TIME. That’s right, you can speak to someone that doesn’t speak your native tongue and Google’s Pixel Buds will translate their language, in real-time, into English in your ears.

This is basically the stuff of the future, only it’s available right now. No one has ever done anything like this before, especially inside a pair of headphones.

The Pixel Buds are designed to work with the Pixel 2 phones, and, if both users are rocking the headphones and a Pixel 2, they can converse in different languages, simply by using the headphones as a prompt.

I remember back when Google Glass was a thing, I used to think it’d be really cool to have an application that essentially overlaid subtitles at the bottom of the heads-up display that translated language in real-time. The Pixel Buds have basically just done this and in an arguably better manner.

The only real downside to this cool feature is that you have to use a Pixel 2 phone with the Pixel Buds for it to work. So how much are these bad boys? Not that much at all, given what they can do – you will be able to grab a pair later this month for £149, so basically the same price as Apple’s AirPods.

The Pixel Buds are pretty different to Apple’s AirPods, though, in that they do have a wire which connects them. They are wirelessly connected to your phone, and the neck cable ensures you can casually wear them around your neck when you’re not using them.

The composition of the headphones is slightly novel as well; the Pixel Buds use a slightly occluded design, in that, they don’t completely jam ups ear canal. Instead, they sit just on the surface, meaning you can hear what’s going on around you.

Interacting with the headphones is done via touch; tap the right Bud to pause, gesture forwards and backward to increase or decrease the volume, and double tap it to have notifications read aloud to you. As of right now, these controls cannot be adjusted.

To access Google Assistant, simply hold your finger down on the right earbud and issue your command.

The Pixel Buds will work with iOS too, even Siri and Google says all updates will be done, silently, in the background whenever the Pixel Buds are connected to a Pixel 2 phone.

Google’s Pixel Buds will be available later this month and retail for £149 and around #63k in Nigeria currency

On the iPhone’s tenth anniversary, Apple launched a special anniversary edition iPhone X. The iPhone X marks a major shift in Apple’s design language for the past few years. The near bezel-less design meant the home button could no longer be in the front. That’s a problem Samsung has already faced with the Galaxy S8 and S8+. But of course, with Android, you don’t necessarily need a physical home button. iOS, however, does not have software buttons so Apple had to come up with another solution. They went with gestures to emulate the functions of the home button. For some reason, if you would like to emulate the iPhone X’s swipe to go home gesture on your Android device, we’ll let you know how you can do it.

Swipe to Go Gesture on Android

Step 1: Install ‘All in one Gestures’ app and grant permissions

On the iPhone X, a simple swipe up from the bottom takes you to the homescreen. To emulate that on an Android device you will need an app called All in One Gestures. There are other apps that can do the job as well but it’s not possible to write a guide for all of them. So we’ll be using this one.

All in one Gestures (Free+, Google Play) →

When you’ve installed the app, start it and you will be welcomed with the entire program’s latest changelog. Now select “Close”. You will also need to grant permissions to this app, including the permission to ‘Modify system settings’.

Step 2: Enable Home Gesture in App

Following that, you will notice the app main screen has three tabs: Hard Keys, Swipe, and Status bar. Go to the “SWIPE” tab and switch on the “Enable” toggle. As soon as you switch it on, you will be prompted to grant Accessibility permissions to the app, so do it as instructed on the screen.

Setup ‘All in one Gestures’ app

Now unlike the iPhone, this app on Android allows you to customize different trigger areas for dedicated actions including the edges and corners. Since we are trying to emulate the swipe up gesture, select “Bottom Area” in the Edges section. Once you do that a sub-menu will pop up to select a predefined action or app that will be triggered. For our purpose to imitate the iPhone-like gesture, we will select “Home” as the action.

Now go back to the homescreen by just swiping up from the bottom.

Step 3: Hide gesture area

After enabling and using Swipe to Go gesture on Android, you should see a trigger are on the bottom of the screen (Or any other area that you selected). So to make the experience less intrusive, we will be hiding the gesture area.

Open the ‘All in one Gestures’ app again and tap on the hamburger menu icon in the top left. Select Personalization > Edge Preferences and then bring down the Opacity to 0 percent. You will not be seeing with the white circle anymore, however, the trigger place is still there and you may swipe to go home anytime you would like.

Go to Personalisation > Edge preferences > Opacity

The Fantastic news is that the home gesture works on all the programs and nearly anywhere across the Android UI, unlike the iPhone. While it works like a charm, whenever you swipe back via the gesture, then you will notice a message at the bottom saying “Back”, which might disturb some people. But we think that the Message isn’t a deal breaker since it doesn’t hinder the experience.

Don’t Miss:

So, by this way, you can easily setup the Swipe to Go gesture on Android Smartphone. There are several more features and functionalities that you can get with this app, unlike the iPhone X.

Nokia made a comeback in the smartphone industry earlier this year during the MWC in Barcelona. Nokia launched the latest smartphones from the company which were also the first to run Android operating system as the earlier smartphones that were launched by Nokia were running Windows OS and known as Nokia Lumia smartphones. The company launched the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 at the MWC among which the Nokia 3 is the budget smartphone out of the three.

The smartphone runs Android 7.0 Nougat which is expected to be upgraded to Android 7.1.1 Nougat and the smartphone has 2630mAh non-removable battery. As far as the software on the Nokia 3 is concerned, the company has tried to make absolute minimal changes to Stock Android as released by Google which will feel as the same on the Nexus and Pixel devices.

When it comes to specifications, the Nokia 3 comes with a 5.00-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 720 pixels by 1280 pixel. Apart from that, the smartphone is powered by a MediaTek 6737 processor clocked at 1.3GHz and the smartphone has 2GB of RAM. Before you proceed with the steps mentioned down below, you will need to keep in mind that this method of unlocking bootloader, installing TWRP and rooting your device will work only on the Nokia 3 and you should not try it on any other smartphone as every device may have different steps and this might cause your device to stop working completely. Also, this method includes rooting which will void your phone warranty. If you understand the risks involved in performing these operations then you can proceed forward to the guide.

Downloads

You will need to download TWRP recovery for Nokia 3 | Download.

Latest SuperSU zip file – This will be needed to root your phone so this has to be transferred to your phone

Unlock Nokia 3 Bootloader

Once you have completed all the steps mentioned in the requirement section, you are ready to unlock the bootloader on your Nokia 3

Now, you will have to right-click on an empty space while holding down the Shift key. Alternatively, you can type cmd in the address bar and hit enter.

Now, connect your Nokia 3 via its original USB cable to your PC.

In the ADB command window, type the following command to boot your Nokia 3 into the fastboot mode.

After performing the above step, you have to type the following command and hit Enter.

fastboot oem unlock unlock_key

Replace unlock_key with the unlock key that you see in the command prompt window. For example, fastboot oem unlock 675645353293. Note that the number mentioned here is just for example purpose and can be totally different from the actual number

Now type the command below to reboot your phone when the bootloader has been unlocked.

fastboot reboot

Steps to Install TWRP on Nokia 3

You have to right-click and press Shift key once again as you have done in Step 1 while unlocking the bootloader on your device. This will open a command prompt window once again and check if you see that your phone has been connected to your PC by typing the following command:

fastboot devices

If you see an alpha-numeric number with fastboot besides it then you are certain that your device is connected in fastboot mode.

Now, in order to flash TWRP on your device, type the following command:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

After this step, TWRP will be installed on your Nokia 3 and this process does not take much time.

Steps to Root Nokia 3

Disconnect your phone from the PC when the recovery is installed and boot it into recovery mode by pressing and holding the Power + Volume Up buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.

Once you have entered TWRP on your phone, it is always a good idea to create a Backup first before installing any mods or zips. To create a Backup, select the Backup option from the TWRP main menu. Next, select all the partitions you want to create a backup for and then swipe to initiate the process. The Backup process can take a while depending on how many partitions you’ve chosen to back up. But when it is complete, you can flash anything with confidence that you can always go back to how things were.

When the Backup is complete, go back to the main menu and select Install.

Navigate to the SuperSu zip that you downloaded earlier, and select it.

Swipe to flash the zip and then tap the Reboot system button at the bottom which appears after the process is complete.

When your phone boots up, head over to the Google Play Store and install the Superuser app to take control of the apps that get access to the root storage.

Instagram, as you all know, is a desktop, mobile and internet-based photo sharing service and application that allows its users to share videos and images both publicly and privately. It was acquired by social media giant Facebook in 2012, and since then, it has gone through certain changes.

One of the highlights of the user experience of Instagram is “the story”. It is actually just a feed that shows the videos and pictures you have shared through your account with your followers (and others, if your posts are public). But the thing about these stories is that they stay up only for 24 hours and then get deleted afterward. Instagram doesn’t allow its users to retrieve an old story, which is a bit of a downer for some. If you are one of those people who want to store stories on your device locally, then you can do so with the help of an Android app called “Story Saver for Instagram”.

How to Store Instagram Story on Your Smartphone

If you have an Android smartphone, saving a friend’s Instagram story to your phone is easy. Just head to the Google Play Store from your phone and download an app named “Story Saver for Instagram” or scroll down to download it straight from Google Play Store. It is a flexible, simple-to-use app that lets you download and store Instagram stories (images and videos) on your phone.

After you launch the app, you shall be required to log in using your Instagram account credentials. Once you are logged in, the main page will display all the stories that your followers have published. But you are not only limited to your own followers, you can look for others’ stories as well by using the Search bar.

Locate the image or video you want to save and then tap Save. The selected graphic will be saved on your device which you can later access through the app’s folder in your Gallery.
