KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — A Malaysian businessman who claims descent from Javanese royalty has alleged that he has some €5 trillion (RM20 trillion) in savings, which would make him the world’s first trillionaire and the world’s richest man by far.

Perak-born Kamal Ashnawi, who heads Sierra Petroleum Sdn Bhd, disclosed this at a press conference here yesterday where he showed reporters a copy of a bank statement from HSBC London, Utusan Malaysia reported today.

The riches were inherited from the Combined International Collateral of the Global Debt Facility set up in 1875 by the world’s royal families, he claimed.

Forbes magazine lists Mexican telco tycoon Carlos Slim Helú as the world’s richest man, with an estimated net worth of US$63.3 billion (RM196.5 billion) in 2011.

Coming in a close second on the rich list is Microsoft founder Bill Gates, whose net worth is reported to be US$59 billion (RM182.3 billion).

In comparison, Malaysia’s richest man, Ananda Krishnan, has a net worth of only US$9.6 billion (RM29.8 billion).

Kamal had called the press conference to refute allegations following the failure of a crude oil processing plant in Kuala Kedah he had proposed in 2005, the Malay-language daily reported.

“This is my last offer to help Malays and companies by investing in three projects in Perlis, Johor and Kelantan in the near future,” he was quoted as saying.

The projects comprise a commercial tourism centre in Kuala Perlis, a Pirates of the Caribbean theme park in Danga Bay, Johor Bahru and a commerical project in Kelantan.

They will be spearheaded by SAS Group, a group of alumni from Sekolah Alam Shah, where Kamal had gone to school.

Since the failure of the proposed Kuala Kedah plant, Kamal has spent much of his time overseas. He said yesterday he intends to reside in Hong Kong for a few years starting in March before moving to Indonesia.

The news that singer Etta James died on January 20 led Google users to search the internet for news and information, making her name the fastest-growing search term over the past week with an increase of 4,200 percent.

Born January 25, 1938, Etta James had a musical career that spanned several decades and genres and spawned such hits as "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "Dance With Me, Henry." Her death led to tributes from numerous contemporary pop stars including Beyonce.

Third-place search term "Sarah Burke" is the name of the Canadian freestyle skier who died on January 19 from injuries sustained in a January 10 skiing accident in Utah. Sarah Burke was a four-time Winter X Games gold medalist and was instrumental in getting the International Olympic Committee to include the half pipe event in the 2014 Winter Olympics. She was just 29 when she died.

The proposed internet anti-piracy legislation was also a hot topic this week, with "SOPA" (Stop Online Piracy Act) and "Megaupload" appearing in second and sixth positions, with increases of 1,350 percent and 200 percent respectively.

The proposed SOPA legislation led to internet-wide protests on January 18 as numerous sites, including Wikipedia and Reddit, aimed to raise awareness of the legislation, which they fear could lead to internet censorship. Just hours after the anti-SOPA protests had finished, the FBI announced that it was closing popular file-sharing site Megaupload due to allegations of copyright infringement, sparking a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

Ongoing tennis tournament the "Australian Open" and football team "Real Madrid" came in fourth and fifth positions respectively; Real Madrid's positioning is most likely due to the team's January 18 El Clásico match against Barcelona, which Madrid lost 2-1.

The term "BBB 12" in seventh position relates to the South American reality TV show Big Brother Brazil 12. The show attracted controversy and a police investigation after footage from the house allegedly showed male housemate Daniel assaulting female housemate Monique.

Legendary blues singer Etta James dies in US

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Etta James, the feisty rhythm and blues singer whose raw, passionate vocals anchored many hits and made the yearning ballad "At Last" an enduring anthem for weddings, commercials and even President Barack Obama, died Friday. She was 73.

James had been suffering from dementia and kidney problems, and was battling leukemia. In December 2011, her physician announced that her leukemia was terminal, and asked for prayers for the singer.

During her illness, her husband Artis Mills and her two sons fought bitterly over control of her $1 million estate, though a deal was later struck keeping Mills as the conservator and capping the singer's expenses at $350,000.

James died at Riverside Community Hospital, with her husband and sons at her side, her manager, Lupe De Leon, said.

"It's a tremendous loss for her fans around the world," he said. "She'll be missed. A great American singer. Her music defied category."

Boldness was as much a trademark of James, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as her platinum-dyed mane.

"Etta James was a pioneer. Her ever-changing sound has influenced rock and roll, rhythm and blues, pop, soul and jazz artists, marking her place as one of the most important female artists of our time," said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Terry Stewart.

She scored her first hit when she was just a teenager with the suggestive "Roll With Me, Henry," which had to be changed to "The Wallflower" in order to get airplay. Over the years, she'd notch many more, carving a niche for herself with her husky, soulful voice and her sassy attitude, which permeated her songs.

But it was her jazz-inflected rendition of "At Last" that would come to define her and make her legendary. The song, which starts with sumptuous strings before James begins to sing, was a remake of a 1941 standard. James made it her own, and her version became the new standard.

Over the decades, it's been popular at weddings and has been featured in commercials and films like "American Pie." But perhaps most famously, Obama and the first lady danced to a version of "At Last" at his inauguration ball.

But the tender, sweet song belied the turmoil that James — born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles — would endure for much of her life. Her mother — whom she described in her 1995 autobiography "Rage to Survive" as a scam artist, a substance abuser and unstable — was a fleeting presence in her life during her youth.

She never knew her father, although she had been told that he was the famous billiards player Minnesota Fats. When she was older, she met him and asked about the rumor. He wouldn't confirm or deny it: as James recalled, he simply told her: "I don't remember everything. I wish I did, but I don't."

Her mother would come in and out of her life, so she was raised by Lula and Jesse Rogers, who owned the rooming house her mother once lived in. The pair brought up James in the Christian faith, and even as a young girl, her voice stood out in the church choir. James would soon get solos and became so well known, she said that Hollywood stars would come to see her perform.

But she wouldn't stay a gospel singer for long. Rhythm and blues soon lured her away from the church, and she found herself drawn to the grittiness of the music.

"My mother always wanted me to be a jazz singer, but I always wanted to be raunchy," she recalled in her book.

She was doing just that when bandleader Johnny Otis found her singing on San Francisco street corners with a couple of girlfriends in the early 1950s.

"At the time, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters had a hit with 'Work With Me, Annie,' and we decided to do an answer. We didn't think we would get in show business, we were just running around making up answers to songs," James told The Associated Press in 1987.

And so, they replied to Ballard with the song "Roll With Me, Henry."

When Otis heard it, he told James to get her mother's permission to accompany him to Los Angeles to make a recording. Instead, the 15-year-old went home and forged her mother's name on a note claiming she was 18.

After her 1955 debut, James toured with Otis' revue, sometimes earning only $10 a night. Things changed for the better in 1959, when she signed with Chicago's legendary Chess label and began cranking out the hits and going on tours with performers such as Bobby Vinton, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and the Everly Brothers.

"We would travel on four buses to all the big auditoriums. And we had a lot of fun," she recalled in 1987.

She also had a lot of success. James went on to record a string of hits in the late 1950s and '60s including "Trust In Me," ''Something's Got a Hold On Me," ''Sunday Kind of Love," ''All I Could Do Was Cry," and of course, "At Last."

Chess Records, whose founder, Leonard Chess, called James their first soul singer, she wrote.

"He went up and down the halls of Chess announcing, 'Etta's crossed over! Etta's crossed over!' I still didn't know exactly what that meant, except that maybe more white people were listening to me. The Chess brothers kept saying how I was their first soul singer, that I was taking their label out of the old Delta blues, out of rock and into the modern era. Soul was the new direction," she said in her autobiography. "But in my mind, I was singing old style, not new."

In 1967, she cut one of the most highly regarded soul albums of all time, "Tell Mama," an earthy fusion of rock and gospel music featuring blistering horn arrangements, funky rhythms and a churchy chorus. A song from the album, "Security," was a top 40 single in 1968.

Her professional success, however, was balanced against personal demons — mainly drug addiction.

"I was trying to be cool," she told the AP in 1995, explaining what had led her to try heroin.

She was addicted to the drug for years, beginning in 1960, and it led to a harrowing existence that included time behind bars and sapped her singing abilities and her money, almost destroying her career. It would take her at least two decades to beat her drug problem — her husband even went to prison for years, taking full responsibility for drugs during an arrest, even though James was culpable.

"My management was suffering. My career was in the toilet. People tried to help, but I was hell-bent on getting high," she wrote of her drug habit in 1980.

After she hit rock bottom, she finally quit the habit and managed herself for a while, calling up small clubs and asking them, "Have you ever heard of Etta James?" in order to get gigs. Eventually, she got regular bookings. In 1984, she was asked to sing the national anthem at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and her career got the resurgent boost it needed, though she fought addiction again when she got hooked on painkillers in the late 1980s.

Drug addiction wasn't her only problem. She struggled with her weight, and often performed from a wheelchair as she got older and heavier. In the early 2000s, she had weight-loss surgery and shed some 200 pounds (90 kilograms).

James performed well into her senior years, and it was "At Last" that kept bringing her the biggest ovations. The song was a perennial that never aged, and on Jan. 20, 2009, as crowds celebrated that — at last — an African-American had become president of the United States, the song played as the first couple danced.

But it was superstar Beyonce who serenaded the Obamas, not the legendary singer. Beyonce had portrayed James in "Cadillac Records," a big-screen retelling of Chess Records' heyday, and had started to claim "At Last" as her own.

An audio clip surfaced of James at a concert shortly after the inauguration, saying she couldn't stand the younger singer and that Beyonce had "no business singing my song." But she told the New York Daily News later that she was joking, even though she had been hurt that she did not get the chance to participate in the inauguration.

Upon hearing of her death, Beyonce released a statement on her website that read: "This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed."

James did get her accolades over the years. She was inducted into the Rock Hall in 1993, captured a Grammy in 2003 for best contemporary blues album for "Let's Roll"; one in 2004 for best traditional blues album for "Blues to the Bone"; and one for best jazz vocal performance for 1994's "Mystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday." She was also awarded a special Grammy in 2003 for lifetime achievement and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She suffered from dementia, kidney problems and leukemia. In October 2011, it was announced that James was retiring from recording, and a final studio recording, "The Dreamer," was released, featuring the singer taking on classic songs, from Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Dreamer" to Guns N' Roses "Welcome To the Jungle" — still rocking, and a fitting end to her storied career.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Unexplained chilling sounds, which filled the air of Samarahan in the wee hours of Jan 11 and 12, have residents there puzzled and perturbed until today.

One of the theories being thrown into the pan is that it could be a by-product of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Programme (HAARP) undertaken by the United States, while others believed it were from processing machines hard at work at an oil palm factory owned by Felcra in Kampung Endap.

But the fact remains that until today the mysterious sounds, which some say resembled loud snoring sounds, remain veiled.

Teacher Mohd Ferdauz Jemain, who lives at Kampung Meranek, was one of those who heard the unexplained phenomenon on Jan 11.

“It was around 2 am when I was awoken by a strange sound. It was a loud hushing sound,
and quite similar to someone snoring.

“I immediately got out of bed and went outside of my house to see what was happening. The feeling was a chilling one. I could not establish where the sound was coming from … it was as if something coming from the sky.

“Frightened, I quickly dashed inside, but stayed awake till daylight as I would not sleep any longer. If I am not mistaken, the sound persisted until about 5am.”

To prove that he was not spinning a tale, Ferdauz said he had recorded the phenomenon on his mobile phone, and he played it for thesundaypost reporter yesterday.

He added that the matter became a hot topic of discussion in Samarahan that day, and
some of the residents even documented their experience on Facebook.

“Villagers in Meranek, Pinang, Sindang, Tambirat and even those living at Desa Ilmu housing estate have also heard those eerie sounds.”

Several residents suggested that it could have come from the oil palm factory in Kampung Endap, but resident Harith Amin, who had worked at that factory previously, brushed it off as nonsense.

“The factory has been there for the last eight years, and I am sure it was not sounds produced by the machines there. In addition to that, no oil palm processing machines could produce sounds which could be heard 8km away,” said Harith, who also made a recording of what he had witnessed. To verify Harith’s theory, Ferdauz decided that should the phenomenon occur again the next day, he would make a dash for the factory.

Ferdauz: “I worked at a school in Sebuyau, so I wake up very early to go to school. True enough, the strange sounds happened the next day, and I quickly made a stop in front of the factory. No sounds came out from there (factory).”

Ferdauz claimed that he also saw strange pattern in the skies in the early morning of Jan 12.

“The clouds appeared to be in straight lines, and well formed. I have never seen anything like it, but whatever it is, I am sure there must be a scientific explanation for it.

“But later that day, an earthquake hit Sumatera in neighbouring Indonesia with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale. I am not sure whether both incidents are related in some ways.”

The incidents only occurred for two nights – Jan 11 and 12.

Meanwhile, Kampung Meranek’s JKKK chairperson Mahmud Pawi, who claimed that he also heard the sounds together with his family, said hoped that the authorities concerned could shed light on the matter.

“When I woke up that morning (Jan 11), I had goose bumps just listening to the sounds. I quickly woke up my entire family and we sat at the veranda trying to figure out what it was and where it was coming from.

“We hope that someone can step forward and enlighten us with an explanation.”

In the quest to achieve the perfect soundstage for a sound quality system, there are many variables that make or break the final result. Simply buying a set of $800 fine European components will get you nowhere. Proper placement and angles is something we have control over during the designing of the system. One of the most important things to understand is how speakers disperse sound in order to properly install a component set. In this article, we are going to address acoustic centers and how to get the best image and stage possible in a vehicle.

99% of the time when you see a set of components in a car, the midbass driver is in the lower front corner of the door and the tweeter is directly above it, at the top of the door, or in the corner off the corner of the glass on the trim panel that covers the side mirror mounts. In the last decade, installing components in the kickpanels has become fairly popular.

If you’ve read the “How to Stereo Image and Soundstage” article, you understand that the farther the speakers are away from you, the more equal the distant between the right and left sides are. This is critical in having a stage that is not perceived as “too loud on one side” and for getting the soundstage as centered as possible.

BUT, WHAT ABOUT HEIGTH? It is not too tough to get a good center stage. Getting it high (above the dash” with speakers mounted in the kickpanel can be a nightmare if you do not know what you’re doing… So what do you do? Let’s look at some options…

I had a friend who built a great car. It was well designed and had a great center stage. But at Sound Quality competitions, judges always docked him points for his stage being too low. I told him to use keep his system as it is, but to also add a set of 3.5” coaxial drivers in the top corner of the dash in the oem locations. These were in addition to his expensive components in the kickpanels. I had him wire them out of phase to better couple to the components due to pathlength differences. I also had him buy some potentiometers (gain knobs) to be able to have them considerably lower in amplitude than his components. The result was additional speakers that were impossible to hear. It sounded like they weren’t even there, but they lifted the entire sound stage, not just the upper frequencies. It sounded like his midbass and tweeter drivers were all mounted on top of the dash. He went on to become the rookie of the years in IASCA.

Assuming that you haven’t built anything yet and we have a blank canvas to paint on, let’s do what we can to get our acoustic center to provide the best stage possible.

With any cone or dome driver, the high frequencies roll off the edge of the cone while the higher frequencies come off of the center of the dome or dustcap. Read this again… With crossovers separating frequencies to midbass and tweeter drivers, it becomes imperative that we understand what exactly is happening to sound radiating off of each driver. The picture below shows a side view of components mounted in a door with the midbass at the bottom front corner and the tweeter mounted directly above it.

The red line represent where the crossover frequency comes off of each driver – lowest frequency off the outside edge of the tweeter and highest frequency off the center of the dust cap of the midbass. The blue line represents the acoustic center and where the sound stage will be projected. Obviously, the sound will be projected to the center of the car on the floor. Now, maybe you’re weirder than I am, but I never enjoy listen to my music with my head between my seats! Yet this is how many components are installed.

Let’s see what happens if the tweeter is mounted higher as we mentioned above…

As you can see, while the acoustic center is still aiming slightly down, it is not nearly as bad as before. So, our problem is lessened but not fixed AND we just inherited another problem. The closer a speaker gets to your ears, the louder it will be perceived. By having the tweeter higher, the tweeter is now considerably louder and overpowering the midbass. Crossovers are designed with the drivers as close to each other as possible. In essence, we just created a mess. Joe Blow who doesn’t know poop about high end audio would never notice the difference, but if you’re still reading this article, you obviously care and what the most impressive system possible. Some of you may have already asked the question to yourself, “What in the heck am I supposed to do then – put my tweeter under my midbass to make the stage go upwards?!?!” Well, Mr./Mrs. Brainiac, let’s see what would happen…

Well, I’ll be darned! It worked! NOT!! Yes, the stage may be aiming in the right direction, but again, we introduced another problem. Now that our tweeter got further away, it will be inherently less loud. And, as frequencies get higher, they become more and more directional. Having the tweeter partially hidden under a midbass is a bad idea as well. But at least we understand the concept right?

Now, if we try to lessen the pathlength difference by putting our components in the kickpanels, we will find some great new changes. Aside from sounding more like you’re in the center of the car, we can put our tweeter almost anywhere around the midbass without any obstruction to the sound. Just as in the drawings above, we will find that having our tweeter below the midbass will help drastically to lift the stage up.

So, is it safe to say that wherever the tweeter is, that sound will go the opposite direction? Pretty much, yeah. So what happens is the kickpanel baffle (what the speakers mount to) is not vertical? It accounts for the acoustic center and places is level and directly in your face. Home audio doesn’t have to deal with dimensional issues, so it is fairly easy to get a great soundstage. In car audio, we have many dimensional issues. We have doors to limit the width of our sound stage. We have a windshield to limit the depth and we always have our speakers lower than our heads which limits height. Taking what you just learned, you can now install speakers in appropriate locations, with the proper orientation of drivers to each other, and with the baffles angled to suit your needs. Such a simple concept that is never properly explained and is based of true physics and acoustic theory. The term 'SQ' or 'Sound Quality' for in car audio system is for system that emphasize on sound quality output rather than loud, or in other word 'SPL' @ 'Sound Pressure Loud'.

I am into SQ since i'm into car audio about 3 years ago. Started with an Alpine's entry level HU, 9870E. The first thing that I bought was a monoblock, Alpine MRP-M850 with a pair of Boschmann 8" 400 watts max subwoofer which was installed on the rear speaker mounting running free-air (infinite baffle by the rear trunk).

The subs serves me for 3 years before I bought a 12" W1 JL audio subwoofer recently. JL subs allow me to play different range of frequency spectrum compared to my free-air 8 inch. I tuned the lowpass to 25khz for the JL to play for soft / no-thumping but air moving bass.

I also used Pioneer FH-P6050UB (2 pre-out) head unit and Pioneer 4 channel GM-4300F amplifier before.

FH-P6050UB is quite acceptable, just that it have limited pre-out. It can play rock song very well since as its sound more on the warm side. I also used a MTX Electronic 2/3 Crossover LSX2 with this HU before for 3 way active setting. However, adding another device in between headunit and amplifier would potentially generate noise and also lost of power due to the voltage differences. Pioneer 4 channel GM-4300F also quite a decent performer. However, its a bit harsh and certain frequency which need proper tuning especially if you playing many type of music.

My final upgrade to date: DLS Ultimate tweeter, Pioneer P80 RSII, Focal Solid 4, Rogers Hifi woofer, Alpine MRP-M850, JL audio subwoofer - 12 inch W1. Running on full 2 way active with custom TA.

How would the 2500mAh capacity battery perform with a dual-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9? I ran a test for about 6 hours with light browsing, with data connection on and spent about 15 minutes of gaming (Blood and Glory). 6 hours 29minutes 34seconds after unplugged

I started on play Blood & Glory @ 1300 hours and it drained to 57% @ 1318 hours.

Quadrant Standard score of 4107 is what I'm getting with total stock Samsung Galaxy Note. I ran the benchmark twice, with the first result of 39++ and got 4107 on the second run. Thanks to its dual-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 and 1GB RAM. I wonder if the test runs on the built in 16GB internal memory or SDCard or both tho. I have no idea of the test script. Anybody?
