Over the weekend, my mum, sister, brother and I checked into a sea-view chalet at Changi.

I came to Singapore to see my mother and my sister. To be with my mother and sister. But noooooooo. I can’t. Well, not at least until the next two days, thanks to the bloody H1N1 pandemic.

On a positive note, it’s my sister’s birthday this weekend. And my mum has planned for us to stay at a resort in Changi over the weekend. Looking forward to that!

I normally fly Tiger Airways for flights between Perth and Singapore, simply because of its low, low fares. Ever since they started flying that route, my parents cannot justify the “premium tax” that they have to pay when flying with other full-service carriers such as Qantas or Singapore Airlines. And they have every right to do so, since the flight only lasts for five hours, and we don’t normally take advantage of all the services that these full-service carriers provide anyway.

But today, I decided to try flying with JetStar, Tiger’s closest competitor on this route. After today’s flight, hands down, JetStar is far better than Tiger Airways. I obviously cannot make a fair judgement from just one flight, but based on first impressions, JetStar is definitely the winner.

What impressed me the most during today’s flight was the food offerings. Mind you that JetStar and Tiger Airways are low-cost carriers and only offer meals, snacks and drinks if you pay for them, and so I was pleasantly surprised that the “hot meal” I ordered came nicely presented in a tray, and that it was a full course airline meal, comparable to the meals of full-service carriers, and not some measly microwaveable dish-in-a-box, which is what you get (and all you get) on Tiger Airways. I had the creamed mushroom and garlic spaghetti, which came with a side dish of potato salad, a bread roll and condiments, desert (chocolate bars) and free-flowing drinks. All that for just $15, which I thought was pretty reasonable.

I also really love the cabin interior and atmosphere. It was all posh and modern with its charcoal leather seats, dark carpets, heavenly white walls and ceilings, and bright orange accents all over. The boarding music was awesome. The playlist features prominant Australian artists such as Empire of the Sun, SIA and Kate Miller-Heidke. I was trying hard not to jump out onto the aisle and start singing and dancing. Today’s flight has certainly proved to me that a low-cost carrier can also provide services that are as good, if not better, than the average full-service carrier, at a low fare. Looking forward to the return flight!

Singapore is currently undergoing Exercise Northstar VII - a series of coordinated terrorist assaults on the island - to test the emergency response capabilities of the different agencies.

There are two phases in Exercise Northstar VII. Phase one started on Monday and will continue on Tuesday with scenarios involving public transport and shopping malls.

Phase 2, which takes place next week, will simulate a hostage situation at a hotel.

Fifteen public and private sector organisations are taking part in the exercise this year, including the Defence Ministry, Singapore Civil Defence Force, Maritime and Port Authority, and public transport providers.

On Monday, the simulated scenario started on Sentosa island, with police receiving reports of “gunfire” at a popular bar there. They arrived at the Cafe del Mar within minutes but by then it was a scene of ruins.

10 people were “dead” and 20 more “injured”. It was later established that the “attackers” had come in by the sea on small boats, and they were not alone. Other “gunmen” had quickly made their way to hotels in the busy Orchard Road shopping belt, leaving behind a trail of carnage.

I wonder what I might encounter during my stay in Singapore over the next two weeks. OHHH SHIT THERE’S A TERRORIST IN THE TRAIN!!! I’M GONNA DIEEEE!!!
