Local report: BC's Harrison signs with D-II Clarion

Bakersfield College's All-Western State Conference sophomore guard Jamar Harrison has signed to play basketball for Clarion University of Clarion, Pa.

Harrison, who is 6-foot-2, averaged more than 17 points a game last season, and also was a member of BC's 2007-2008 state Final Four team. Clarion University is an NCAA D-II program that plays in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Bakersfield College un- veiled its 2009 football schedule, and the opponents are the same as last season's. The Renegades are also playing the teams in the same order.

The opener will be on Saturday, Sept. 5, when Fresno City College comes to Memorial Stadium for a 7 p.m. game. It is the second straight season Fresno and BC will open the season at Memorial Stadium.

Liberty's Klinchuch picks Long Beach St.

A decision to follow in her brother's footsteps three years ago has vaulted -- quite literally -- Amanda Klinchuch into a college scholarship.

The Liberty senior started pole vaulting as a freshman because her older brother did the same for the Patriots, and she took to it. Now she's signed this week with Long Beach State.

STOCKTON -- In a game that featured 38 total hits, the CSUB baseball team came up on the short end of the offensive battle Friday in Stockton, falling 21-8 to the University of Pacific at the Klein Family Field.

The Roadrunners (12-36) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run homer by Mick Gaston.

SAN MATEO Before last weekend's SoCal Regionals, Cooper Thompson hinted that his best javelin throw had yet to come.

The Bakersfield College freshman literally saved his best for last Friday afternoon at the California Community College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships in San Mateo.

Four NCAA Tournament participants face the Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team this fall. The 2009 schedule that was released this week.

San Diego, Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State are the tournament qualifiers. CSUB will play its third season of NCAA Division I competition in its final season of the four-year reclassification from NCAA Division II to Division I membership.

WALNUT -- BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE FRESHMAN COOPER THOMPSON WON THE JAVELIN WITH A THROW OF 200 FEET, 7 INCHES SATURDAY AND FRESHMEN LONG JUMPERS KEVIN NORWOOD AND CHANEL REAVES EACH PLACED FIFTH IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAMPIONSHIPS AT MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE.

THE MARKS BY NORWOOD (23-7) AND REAVES (18-0) WERE SEASON BESTS, AND THEY AND THOMPSON QUALIFIED FOR THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AT THE COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO.

Seven Bakersfield College athletes received qualifying marks this past weekend at the SoCal track and field preliminaries at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Cooper Thompson was first in the men's javelin with a mark of 208 feet, 6 inches at Saturday's SoCal preliminaries at Mount SAC. Also qualifying on the men's side, Kevin Norwood was fourh in the long jump at 23-41/2 and Cesar Mireles was fifth in the 1,500 meters (4 minutes, 2.23 seconds) and eighth in the 800 (1:56.3).

Covey was the men's track coach at BC for 42 years, and he's about to join an organization he helped develop and nurture: the BC Track and Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame.

Brian Edick finally made the trip from Valencia pay off.

Edick, a resident of Valencia, shot a final round 2-under 70 to beat hard charging Scott Anderson and first round co-leader Eric Steinbeck in the 14th Arvin City Amateur golf championship played on the par-72 Sycamore Canyon golf course Sunday.

College roundup: Thompson breaks WSC javelin mark

Freshman Cooper Thompson from Garces High School set a Western State Conference record in the javelin Saturday and broke the Bakersfield College record for the second straight week with a throw of 208 feet, 6 inches at the WSC finals in Memorial Stadium. That mark is the best in the state among JC throwers this season.

Thompson last week broke Jason Faast's BC record with a mark of 202-7. He is fourth in the nation among JC javelin throwers.

Local report: Riverlakes wins SCGA team title

The Links at RiverLakes Ranch defeated Fullerton Golf Club 26-22 Saturday at the Southern California Golf Association at the SCGA Club in Murietta for the 2009 Saturday Team Play title.

RiverLakes team captain Scott Anderson said the Saturday Team Play title was the first by a Bakersfield team.
