Local report: CSUB wrestler Kimbrell earns Pac-10 scholar-athlete honor

Cal State Bakersfield senior wrestler Thomas Kimbrell has been honored as the 2009 Pacific-10 Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as presented by Toyo Tires.

The award, granted to one student-athlete in each of the Pac-10's 22 sponsored sports, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and athletically.

The standing ovation for Nikhol West during Thursday night's Cal State Bakersfield Student-Athlete Awards Banquet illustrated the respect and love for West, and the hurdles she continues to overcome.

West, hospitalized in critical condition in mid-April after collapsing in a pool during swim class, earned the female Roadrunner of the Year award, which goes to athletes who contribute to their sport and university in ways "that may go unnoticed in the box scores."

Pacific rips 25 hits in 21-8 victory over CSUB

STOCKTON -- In a game that featured 38 total hits, the CSUB baseball team came up on the short end of the offensive battle Friday in Stockton, falling 21-8 to the University of Pacific at the Klein Family Field.

The Roadrunners (12-36) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run homer by Mick Gaston.

Joey Mills blasted a second-inning grand slam and Martin Medina pitched seven effective innings Thursday to lead the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team to a 5-2 win at UC Davis.

This was a makeup from an early-season rainout. CSUB concludes its inaugural season with a three-game series at University of the Pacific starting today and concluding Sunday in Stockton.

Four local athletes signed national letters of intent to compete in sports at Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday.

The biggest party was at North, where long jumper Seth Vlach and distance runner Cecilia Lopez signed on to be Roadrunners. Vlach holds a 21-foot mark in the long jump this year and Lopez was an All-Area cross country runner. She also has times of 2:26.92 in the 800 meters in track.

Jannis' effort not enough for 'Runners

Mickey Jannis put together one of the finest pitching performances for Cal State Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon in the home finale of its inaugural season.

It wasn't enough to get a win: Cal State Northridge posted a 3-0 victory at Hardt Field, dropping the Roadrunners' record to 11-35 with four road games remaining this weekend to close out the season.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team couldn't hold a early four-run lead Sunday as No. 14 Missouri put together a pair of big innings, scoring a combined seven runs during the fifth and sixth, leading to an 8-5 Roadrunner loss at Taylor Stadium.

CSUB (11-34) struck first on an RBI ground out by Stuart Smith in the second inning. The Roadrunners added three runs in the top of the third to go ahead 4-0 behind an RBI single from Kyle Richardson and a two-run single by Richard Escalera.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Sunday was a day of firsts for the Roadrunner baseball team.

CSUB's Jeremy Rodriguez belted his first home run of the season, Erik Draxton earned his first save of the season, and the Roadrunners earned their first series victory over a Big 12 Conference team by beating the host Nebraska Cornhuskers 8-7 at Hawks Field.

Local report: Four CSUB softball players earn all-Independent honors

Junior third baseman Kelli Bailey has been named to the NCAA Division I Independent first-team softball squad.

Bailey, a second-team pick in 2008, led all Independent players with 14 doubles and 189 at-bats. She ranked second in hits (63) and assists (128) and was fourth in runs scored (35). She batted .333 this season with three home runs and 21 RBIs.

May 5 local report: CSUB soccer game to raise funds for 6th graders' Camp KEEP

The Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team is hosting an exhibition game Saturday night against Cal Poly, with proceeds from ticket sales and concessions going to Camp KEEP.

Tickets are $5 apiece for the 7 p.m. match. Cal Poly qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, beating UCLA 1-0 before losing 3-0 to UC Irvine to close out an 11-6-6 season.

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Bakersfield opened what promises to be a high-traveling, busy week by dropping a 15-2 decision at UCLA on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners (9-31) fell behind early. It was 7-0 after three innings, 11-0 after four and 14-0 after five. Losing pitcher Jonathan Montoya, the first of five CSUB pitchers, allowed eight hits and 10 runs in 31/3 innings.

College roundup: BC ends baseball season with 16-3 win over Citrus

Bakersfield College wrapped up its baseball season Thursday with a 16-3 win over Citrus College, the second blowout win over Citrus this week. The Renegades beat the Owls, who have clinched a postseason berth, 12-1 on Tuesday.

Jarret Martin went 5-for-6 with two doubles, his 11th home run of the season and three RBIs in the finale. The homer tied Sean Barker's team record set in 2000.
