Local foreclosure, mortgage delinquency rates rise

Bakersfield's foreclosure and mortgage delinquency rates for the month of May have increased from the same time last year, a report released Tuesday detailed.

In the market, which covers all of Kern County, 13.6 percent of mortgage loans were 90 days or more delinquent in May, according to First American CoreLogic, a Santa Ana-based firm that tracks the real estate industry. That compares to 8.10 percent in May 2008.

Money for new home tax credit running out

Time is running out to apply for a temporary tax credit on the purchase of new homes.

Under a program that began in March, buyers of new homes can receive a tax credit of 5 percent of the value of the home, not to exceed $10,000. The program runs through March 1, 2010, and is capped at $100 million.

Kern's tallest building gives glimpse of commercial real estate market

With one in every 144 housing units receiving a foreclosure filing, California posted the nation's second highest state foreclosure rate in May despite a 4 percent decrease in foreclosure activity from the previous month, according to RealtyTrac's U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.

Nevada led the nation for foreclosure rates, and Florida ranked third, according to the Irvine-based real estate company.

Foreclosure prevention meeting set as default notices hit record high

Lenders and other real estate finance experts plan to meet with people at risk of losing their homes next weekend to help them figure out a way to avoid foreclosure.

The June 13 meeting is one in a series of homeownership preservation workshops going on around the country. It's offered by the Hope Now Alliance, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and NeighborWorks America.

Three accused of real estate fraud

An Orange County real estate broker, her former boyfriend and his brother are accused of using straw buyers to fraudulently purchase 35 properties, six of them in Kern County.

Kathy Chen, 48, of Westminster, and Richard Salgado Gonzalez, 59, and Daniel Gonzalez, 56, whose residences were not immediately known, were arrested and charged with 154 felony counts, including conspiracy, grand theft, attempted grand theft, forgery, recording false documents, elder financial exploitation and identity theft, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

Homebuilders plead not guilty

Donald and Denise Juhasz, the couple accused by the county grand jury of failing to finish work on homes they were paid to build, entered separate pleas of not guilty Thursday in Kern County Superior Court.

Judge Jerold L. Turner set a date of Nov. 9 for their trial on felony charges of conspiracy, forgery, diversion of funds more than $1,000 and grand theft.
